No new games in 2019, unfinished backlog only

Oh damn this thread my problem is that I finished my back log across all consoles, then I finished my secondary black log list, and now I feeling that take too much time between relevant releases hahaah

I want my backlog back (I’m will not make another list of tertiary games just to have a list ) guess I will revisit old games or just ride my motorcycle

I prob don't qualify for any pokemons in the OP but I've been getting through some older stuff this year. Currently going through Arkham Knight (thanks PS plus) after bouncing off it, mostly due to the bat tank tank stuff, 4 years ago (fuck me. Its been that long...).

70% done with the story and doing plenty of side stuff and really enjoying it. I'm trying to not read too much into the bat tank bits this time. I was always of the opinion it plays and handles fine, its just really out of place in a Batman game.

Also

Just finished Kingdom Come Deliverance. It's a fucking masterpiece!

I've been on and off working my way through this in the last month or so and I just about concur. I'm playing on a base ps4 and to say there's a few technical problems is something of an understatement. If I had a PC that could run it properly I think I'd almost file it under masterpiece as well.

I'm pretty close to the end I believe. I've finished the monastery quest (which was too good) and heard it moves pretty quickly to the end of the game from there, so started my way through a couple of the dlcs last time I played.

I'll def finish it all though, likely after I'm done with Batman (and DMC5, which I accidentally bought yesterday)

I don't think I really qualify anymore either because I played some new games via Game Pass and I don't want to hold of on Builders 2 any longer, so I'll get that in a week or two anyways.

I have played some of my backlog still. Finished Crackdown 3 this week. I haven't played the 1st or 2nd one, but I enjoyed this well enough. I just hopped on whenever I wanted to action and wanton destruction, and it worked well enough for that. Have no idea what the story is about.

Armikrog. I finished this last week. I really like the claymation, but the reviews are right, this isn't a good game.

Waking Mars. I played as much as I could stand of the PC version of this mobile game. It was very fun for several hours, but the puzzles in the last half of the game are too much of a grind for me to want to figure out. It's pretty mediocre.

The Turing Test. I'm about 9/10ths of the way through this Portal-like puzzle game. The puzzles are mostly easy, but one of them I had to think about and come back to a day or two later. The story is well told, but unsurprising so far. This seems like a negative review, but it's not. I'm really liking the game a lot.

City of Heroes Homecoming. I started up in this back several months ago after the private server drama, but I come back to it often. It was my favorite MMO back in the day and it's great to get back into.

So I moved from KCD to Mass Effect. I had a crack at it earlier in the year and bounced off it but this time I persevered and it did actually stick in the end - it's just KOTOR with more guns and real-time combat. Not really using the powers much - can't quite wrap my head around them, but I'm having fun.

Mass Effect 1 completed, it seems only right to go onto Mass Effect 2. Yep, I'm having a big RPG year. One thing that I did notice with ME1 is that it all feels so lacking in physicality after KCD. Shooting lacks heft, interactions with the environment are largely absent, dumbed down since KOTOR, I can see the trajectory that took them to the looter-shooter.

Any interest in doing this again in 2020, and any ideas to improve it? Thanks for your opinions and contributions to the thread all year.

A few thoughts of my own:

I'd like to amp up the challenge and restrict myself to 10 games for the year, in addition to the "no new games" condition. Would be kinda fun and I'd like to try it out, for scientific purposes. The goal wouldn't be to restrict my time, per se, but to invest a full year of time into those games only. Obviously I'd still play whatever random stuff with friends and family outside of those 10 during social gatherings (lol, sorry son but I'm restricting myself to 10 games this year...)

I haven't updated for awhile, but I have kept to the challenge all year so far. Christmastime is coming up and so I'll get myself a few "new" games from 2019 to play next year. Still playing DOJ and improving my score. I'm halfway through Bravely Default and Resident Evil 4 Wii, and I'll beat those before the year is done.

I don't feel as though I have completed a higher number of games this year, so I'm not prescribing this as some kind of "backlog-cleaning remedy". The peace of mind of ignoring every new game that comes out is pretty relaxing, I'll admit. I don't mind spoilers, while some other folks might get really bothered by hearing spoilers about a game, so maybe that's part of why I can tolerate missing out Day One.

Sekiro and Death Stranding are definitely going to be Christmas gifts to myself and will be two of my 10 games for 2020. Kingdom Come Deliverance and Nobunaga's Ambition are two more. Gotta include DOJ. Nier: Automata makes for six games. I need to beat Dishonored 2 so that's 7.

I reckon I'll carry on through to 2020, only a couple of minor sins this year and still a huge backlog to clear. It's been a good thing for me to finally properly experience games I'd previously not given the time they deserved. Currently enjoying Mass Effect 2 though tbh it's not on the same level as the KOTOR games or KCD - it's a shooter with conversations instead of an RPG sadly. My side game is trying to wrap my head around Fire Pro Wrestling World - every previous attempt I've bounced off it but I'm finally starting to get some understanding of the game. It feels good.

I already lost even before I post here.
My biggest passion is discovering each day it pass new interesting games and if I can to buy them as well.
So nope, I want to play the games when I see them.

Yeah, I'd be happiest outlining 12 games at the start of the year and working over those, say once a month. Unfortunately there will always be new games I want to play.

For me, this thread has mostly been a valuable to reminder not to forget about backlogged ones, which is all too easy when buying games feels more important/satisfying than playing them.

I've ended up with real satisfaction from a combination of working through a theme (RPGs have been heavy this year) and gravitating towards games that present challenge - so this year I finally came to understand Dark Souls (will be going back to it next year), some wonderful Japanese games, Fire Pro Wrestling, etc. I've shied away from that for a long time and now I'm enjoying my gaming more than ever. Being out of the buy-loop is also incredibly helpful.

Yeah playing satisfaction is at an all-time high for me right now like @hariseldon also reported.

That's why I want to narrow my focus even further to 10 games and see if that gets too boring over the course of a year or if it's more satisfying.

Haven't done a progress report for a while:

Completed
Cruise For A Corpse (Atari ST) - Starts promisingly, a brilliant murder mystery wrapped in an adventure game engine, then it becomes pixel-hunting, no-logic bollocks with a story that makes zero sense.
Technobabylon
KOTOR 1
KOTOR 2
GTA 4
Kingdom Come Deliverance
Mass Effect 1

Gave Up On
The Nomad Soul - David Bowie is excellent, the first area is excellent but then the game goes to faux-Egypt and turns into a turd.
GTA San Andreas - After such a good opening it really gets fucking boring when you get to Los Venturas. Plus too much flying. Damn they fucked the flying bad.

In Progress
Mass Effect 2
Black Mesa

Side Dishes
Fire Pro Wrestling Thingy
Unreal Tournament (the original) - I'd forgotten just how good it was - the shooting is so tight vs modern games which feel like wading through treacle

Queued Up
Mass Effect 3
Will likely get GamePass and have Outer Worlds as an additional sin to go with my Cyberpunk pre-order and KCD DLC. Might also pick up Red Dead.

Plans for 2020
I enjoyed some Japanese stuff this year and wouldn't mind going back to some of that to see if I can get a bit further.

I agree with what everyone else said. I've kind of gone back to the drawing board about why I liked games to begin with. Thanks for starting this up DunDunDunpachi DunDunDunpachi . I plan on starting with everyone next year, but I'll definitely fail the challenge when cyberpunk releases.

Lately I've been playing Dragon Quest Builders 2 and this game is right up my alley for what I like to do. It might be my favorite this year. It could have used a little editing in the text blocks though.

Also, I've been replaying Kingdom Rush, the mobile tower defence game. It's very good for a 15 minute or so block of time.

Forgive me for I have sinned. I purchased Disco Elysium, as well as getting Game Pass to get Outer Worlds.

In other news - Mass Effect 2 had a properly jarring moment:

Honestly it was so SJW - preaching that if you're enlightened you should just find people attractive regardless of race (species) or gender. As if we can all make ourselves pansexual.

Finished Mass Effect 2 - writing was patchy and ultimately it's a corridor shooter with waist-high walls but it was good brainless fun. That said, KOTOR was better. Next up ME3 to finish, with a side-serving of Disco Elysium.

So, Final Fantasy 12. My first time playing. It didn’t feel like a FF game to me, but it was fun and enjoyable in places. I felt the story wasn’t as focused in as I am used to with FF games. I could feel the influence of FF11 all through out my time playing. The speed multiplier setting was a god send for levelling and even general exploring. The story never grabbed me with this game, I never got invested and don’t feel any one character was really explored well at all. That failing made the scope of the game feel smaller. Why are certain characters along for the ride? What are we doing again? I always felt like I was waiting for a big event to kick start a new chapter in the game.

All that being said, I still enjoyed the game as a whole. It’s just evident this game was a part of a turning point for the FF series.

So.. after giving up on Mass Effect 3 for being a bit shit, I was naughty and bought Disco Elysium and spent the £1 to get gamepass to give Outer Worlds a shot. Disco Elysium I've praised thoroughly elsewhere, a truly incredible game and honestly I don't regret breaking the rules one bit - I paid full price which is unusual for me but it's worth it. However, Outer Worlds was just fucking boring. It did however give me a nudge to give Fallout New Vegas a proper shot. Tried it in the past, got a little way in and bounced off. Once again I'm further in than any previous attempt and I'm loving it. I think it helps that I now have a far better feel for how RPGs work where previously they were a bit of a mystery to me. It means my todo list now encompasses Planescape Torment, Baldurs Gate 1/2, Divinity Original Sin 2, Neverwinter Nights, Pillars Of Eternity, Tyranny, Alpha Protocol, Dragon Age Origins, Morrowind, Oblivion, Vampire Bloodlines... Damn I bought so many RPGs without giving any of them a fair shot. What the hell is wrong with me? Still, know what I'm doing next couple of years at least!

We're two months away from the completion of this challenge. How have folks done so far, and what sage wisdom to you have to offer new challengers who hope to try this in 2020?

Subject to change, but I've nailed down my 10 solo games for 2020. This is a personal restriction that won't be required to participate in 2020's challenge (anyone is welcome to try it too, of course). The goal is to invest 100% of my single-player time into these ten games. Any multiplayer is fair as long as it sticks to the "no new games in 2020" restriction.

I want to see if I become bored out of my skull, or if the narrow focus enriches the experience of the ten games in question.

- Dodonpachi Daioujou
- Diablo 3
- Death Stranding
- Sekiro
- Kingdom Come Deliverance
- Nier Automata
- Hollow Knight
- Nobunaga's Ambition

Its been good. I’ve tackled loads of games I had held back on, thinking I wouldn’t have the time to play them. Tales games, FF games, Persona 5, NiNoKuni 2 etc. I had so many games that I would glance over and think I would play when the time is right. That made it tricky for me to even pick a game, let alone commit to playing one. I’m picking something to play much more freely since posting in here, completing a few games and seeing others do the same for some games that I even have in my own backlog.

I haven’t passed the ”No new games“ part as I bought RE2 early in the year. But I’ve held back on many a impulse purchase since playing my older games, and that feels good as there are genuine games I want to play that I’ll find on discount later. I’d participate again next year 100%.

I wouldn't get down on yourself since the OP is just a fun, meaningless challenge. If your gaming time feels more valuable as a result, I would say that is a win. I am glad to join you next year to attempt the challenge once again.

My observation throughout this year's thread is that whether people stick to the challenge strictly or just mostly stick to it, the result for both groups is higher satisfaction in playing their collection of games and an alleviation of "analysis paralysis".

Personally, I do not think I am completing my games any faster nor slower compared to before. So I do not think this is best for backlog clearing ( jshackles jshackles thread would be best for that). However, maybe others in the thread are making better progress through their backlog compared to myself, I don't know.

Finished Disco Elysium, and I would say it was 100% worth breaking the rules for. Dicked about with some of my other isometric RPGs (Pillars Of Eternity, Baldur's Gate, Planescape) and settled on Planescape Torment. I reckon it would be sensible to then go with Divinity 2 before tackling Baldur's Gate to open that particular branch of the RPG tree.

This year I have achieved moderation and experienced some fantastic games that had been sitting in my backlog for years. I'd call that a win.

I'm currently playing RDR2 and at my rate of progress it's gonna be almost 2020 when I finish. Here's a list of games I've got ready for next year so far. Some I am replaying.

FF7
Persona 5
Gran Turismo Sport Spec II
Original NiER
God of War
Little Big Planet 3
Jet Moto 1, 2, 3
MGS 1, 2, 3
Death Stranding
Ni No Kuni: WoWW
Jet Grind Radio
Juiced 1 or 2
Ratchet & Clank PS2/PS4
Hollow Knight
Altelier Ryza
Spyro 1, 2, 3
Dead Space 2
Gravity Rush 2
Enslaved

And there's still The Last of Us 2, FF7 remake, Ghosts of Tsushima, Cyberpunk, Biomutant, and Atomic Heart coming out next year... So I'm ready for the unfinished backlog only in 2020!

Currently working my way through New Vegas - I've got Planescape Torment also on the go but mostly tackling New Vegas. Tbh it's ok, better than Outer Worlds, but some of the level design really pisses me off - Freeside and the sunset sasparilla HQ map design are awful, it's just a nightmare trying to find places (not helped by the loading between areas of course) - the local map view is utterly useless and the levels are just designed with so many pointless dead ends, rooms caved in with rubble, and with every god damn room looking the same. Add in a few bugs and you've got a real mess. Just arrived at the strip, I'm at level 12, we'll see what happens.

Planescape Torment is ok but tbh so far I'd say I prefer Disco Elysium, perhaps because DE is a little more focused on a smaller place, while Planescape feels a bit too sprawling in some ways. That said maybe it gets better later on.

The only games I'm trying to beat right now are Flinthook and Daioujou, bout of which are a long way off. I'm eager to jump into some narrative-driven games like Kingdom Come and Sekiro in 2020.

Also, I'm definitely going back on my word a few posts ago and sticking to fifteen games instead of only ten:

Dodonpachi Daioujou, Diablo 3, Death Stranding, Sekiro, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Nier Automata, Hollow Knight, Nobunaga's Ambition, Everspace, ESP Ra.de, Crystal Crisis, Flinthoook, The Last Guardian, Siralim 3, Enter the Gungeon

Good for your trying out those classics (both New Vegas and Planescape) but I admit they have a lot of characteristics that are products of their time. I don't find the combat in either to be fun, just tolerable at best. The interface for both games is clunky.

But the redeeming quality of both games is the writing and the faction interaction. If you like RPGs that "pay off" at the end with a story that includes a ton of your decisions, both games fit that bill.

Will do. I've added Dark Souls because there's a new fog gate randomizer, and Stalker SOC because there's a new remaster mod with beautiful textures and lighting. God I love mods!

Man I couldn't do this.. I have a spending problem. My switch backlog is huge
You're not allowed to play anything you buy in 2020 (which does exclude brand-new titles, then) but you can still buy stuff if you want.

For instance, there have been a couple releases from 2019 that I bought when I had the chance so that I could have my copy for 2020. ESP Ra.de, Hollow Knight, and Nobunaga's Ambition are games I bought this year but haven't played.

I mean, it might help you spend less overall, too, but I thought I'd mention there is a caveat for buying games, you just have to shelve them and not play them until the year is over.

Alternatively, if you look on the main page you could try to only play 1 2020 game for every 10 backlog games, or something like that. The spirit of the challenge is to focus on what you already own and not to focus on brand-new games for a whole year. I admit, it was really tough not being there Day One for games like Sekiro, Death Stranding, and many others, but in the end I think the challenge is worth trying.

The challenge has been useful for my wallet but more importantly it’s been useful for how I enjoy my games. I’ve had a real binge on classics this year that I’ve previously bounced off and it’s been a blast. Seems to have ended up with an RPG theme.

I don’t have too many issues with old interfaces and controls so that’s not necessarily been a problem, though DunDunDunpachi DunDunDunpachi is right to say the combat isn’t amazing in either of the games I’ve been on recently, but the interface hasn’t been the biggest problem. I think there’s still hope for planescape to grab me, I think I just need to find the right secondary game to go with it. Debating picking an adventure game as my side game but we’ll see how the mood takes me.

And there's no way I'm taking up this challenge next year.

I did way better than I expected to in Jan, so much so that I'm going to get a new PC during the BF sales because I spent virtually nothing on gaming so far this year.

Playing Cyberpunk on.a console just doesn't seem right.

I don't think I'll try this next year, mostly because I'll just have so little game time anyways, but also because doing it throughout this year broke my habit of buying too many games.

I feel like I'm cured now, and don't need to try every popular game for 5 to 10 hours before I get bored of it and shelve it. Seriously, there's been a couple dozen games this year where I can look at it and say that's cool but I'll probably never play it and that's fine. A year or two ago I would've bought those and just shelved a lot of them. I just don't have that desire at all anymore.

How's Yoshi Yoshi doing? Still clearing hundreds of games per day? I vaguely recall earlier in the year he was shifting them at a hell of a rate.

I dropped Planescape in the end - just need a bit of a break from narrative-heavy stuff for a bit I think. Alpha Protocol is going well and I'm giving the original Thief a shot. Graphics are butt-ugly but hopefully I'll have a fun time.

I think my list here is up to date. Technically I have finished Yooka-Laylee and the Imposible Lair for a review, but personally, I am not done with it, because I still need to get a few TWIT coins. At some point I received a warning that it is very important that I finish the game I was working on asap and so I spent most of the second half of the year programming like a madman to get it released. It is now released, but a second game I am also working on also needs to finish ASAP. So I had to give up my goal of clearing my backlog this year and will resume next year.

EDIT: OH and I have finished my own game of course, like 20 times. Does that count ;)?
