i mean i was into SW for like 30+ years before Disney bought it.

So was I. Idk man, wasn't even a conscious decision, after going to see TLJ in theatres (and I'm not saying it's entirely the fault of that movie), I just haven't cared, because they don't care to make me care. When I feel like watching Star Wars, I've got my blu rays, but other than that, they've made it painful to even spend mental energy on this thing, I was able to cut ties pretty easily. There's lots of shit to watch.

i feel like George selling to Disn3y, he was thinking, "man, those rabid fans, they HATED me, LOL, who better for them to hate?" it almost is a natural fit. get passes off his IP and they take some of the heat. it was part of the deal.

tbh i and my family has purchased enough SW merchandise in my lifetime that it forms a core part of my personal mythology. i can't go back in time and erase the memory of when i was at my friend Katie's house and they had a VHS of ROTJ and i saw it. or when i was at the movie theater w my family, the one with the Pac Man neon sign, seeing a mid-80s revival. it is burned into my being. maybe i don't have another life after this, this is all i have, maybe this life is all i will experience. these are some of my few remaining memories from when i was a child. SW populates many of them. now they have purchased access to that. not directly, but let's be honest, they are playing with fire here. millions are being psychologically triggered.

surely they know this. but when someone like Rian Johnson comes in and shits on the childhood dreams of millions of people, just to be subversive or edgy, or to tell me things don't always work out, like i haven't figured that out yet, like i need to hear it from some fat pudgy bearded millionaire. no, fuck that. you guy dropped the ball one too many times.

i'm glad they bought it cos now i feel entirely fine shitting on the mistreatment of the property. people have discussed this since it was out in the 70s. the early internet was swapping messages about the movies decades before AOL or Facebook were the twinkle in a rich man's eye. fan discussion & debate has always been a part of the series. they purchased that alongside the franchise. it wasn't just IP rights and character designs that made SW. it was the dreams and hopes of millions of people. the dreams these jackasses farted on.

more leak updates. summary from TheForce.net forums:

I downloaded the PDF and read it expecting the worst.
I guess my expectations weren't low enough. If even a quarter of what's on that file is true then this movie might be worst than The Last Jedi.
I didn't think that would be possible.

The trilogy is ruined but I think they’ll somehow pull of a decent film in its own right. It’s going to be so starwars it will hurt.

they better have a really good saber fight or 2 as well and then the trilogy will be 2/3 good. 1/3 we don’t talk about.

You know what’s a great idea?

let’s kill the German Shepard you loved your entire life...

Absolute genius.

I’m gonna knock out jj Abrams if I ever see him.

someone deserves to get their ass beat for raping Star Wars like this

If chewbacca dies heroically it’s totally fine.
If it’s off screen or he gives up aka luke skywalker then that’s some bullshit.

it’s not fine.

they killed off the human cast.

for as much as they did already you’d think they’d have the sense to keep iconic staples like 3po, r2, chewie and the falcon.

Nope!

no one enjoys having seen all their heroes die for piss poor unlikable replacements.

Yea they probably should keep chewie around.

The way Han died I was totally fine, luke I am still having trouble dealing with. Leia remains to be seen (pun intended?) chewie dying heroically I can deal with.

if chewie is leaving the cog in the machine and doesnt have to be relegated as marketing material anymore by disney then its mercy. its not like any of this from the skywalker saga will ever be used in film again outside of an easter egg cameo.

their Star Wars land seems mostly to be built around new Star Wars.

The mandalorian could be great, as can obi wan but they dropped the ball with the films. I legit have become disenchanted with something I once adored.

However I will say Rogue One was pretty damn great.

They'll do that and start selling porgs everywhere.

bitch, porgs aren't real. the most adorable thing in current star wars is old mark hamill.

the best thing about Solo was Han meeting Chewie.

look, I can't say you can't retire some toys, but damn it you better have great replacements. they aren't planning anything at all!

Honestly I have 0 interest in this and I'll watch it one day probably when I sample disney+ for a couple months.

I liked the prequels more than the last 2 movies. Solo was a total waste of time and just made the characters less interesting by having to give them back story. And rogue was ok one time but was a needless story as we already knew what happened.

But I didn't really like 7 or 8 at all. Mostly because I didn't like any of the characters. They were all so forced feeling they didn't seem like people. They were either the bad guy, the cute character thrown in, the comedic relief, or the super ultra good guy. Even like how Poe and the black guy instantly became best bro friends of the universe after 2 seconds of meeting felt forced. I fell asleep for like 10 minutes in both of them. Even the action parts weren't interesting.

At this point I am done with star wars. All I want is the original trilogy on blu ray without the special edition shit. And if some random guys on the internet can accomplish that there is no reason Disney cant.

Sounds like there's a teaser for the trailer this weekend.

Then tickets go on sale at 5pm Pacific on Monday, with the trailer during MNF halftime like with the last two movies in the trilogy.

Figured it would be this weekend. The usual MNF routine for Disney.

its cause they didnt want to edit out the puffins on the island so they replaced them with porgs.

nah, that's bs. they were on the Falcon and stuff. kind of hard to think it would have been cheaper to CGI them into new characters than pay a bird wrangler for a few days.

besides, what a lame way to create an alien. "We shot this movie on Ireland but we couldn't keep the birds out so we gave them big eyes" such imagination!

wow really transportative. it's like i'm on a shitty island off the coast of Ireland IN SPAAAAACE

Rian Johnson, cursed be his name, is the most disgusting film director I have ever seen. Literally watch him in interviews or look at his twitter, it's like he despises the franchise and all of its fans. He literally thinks he made some sort of great misunderstood film which will only be appreciated at some point in the future, like 2001 A Space Odyssey. He is vain, egotistical, and childish. He should not be directing any films at all until he can get his ego under control, let alone Star Wars.

The preposterously high critic scores for his new film, Knives Out, are extremely suspicious and reek of some underhanded with the devil, aka Disney, which should come as a shock to no one.

I will not pay to see this pandering, desperate attempt by Disney to close out a terrible trilogy by baiting people with nostalgia and shallow mystery boxes.

Nah, the prequels were good, not really that much worse than ROTJ I’m my opinion. Not every movie needs to be Citizen Kane. There is a lot to enjoy in those films.

Never really got the mass hate for them, and I like the RLM videos. Openly crapping on the PT was mainstream fully accepted behavior, everyone from South Park to Jay Leno was doing so. They just didn’t call it toxic at the time, it was normal behavior.

At least nobody was using the PT to bash the OT. They were not calling people bigots for not liking Jar Jar. Or sexists for not liking Amidala. They were not going back and making Luke out to be some pampered fool in order to prop up Anakin. The arguments I see in favor of ST, many of them are just finding excuses or justifications for bad writing by crapping on the OT. At least the PT films lived and died on their own merits. At least they made in-universe sense.

These ST films are just parasitic growths sapping all goodwill from previous entries. Nothing new to offer.

Star Wars died when Marcia Lucas divorced George. She was the only one with the "balls" to tell GL NO. It's why the prequels are a mess, Lucas basically did whatever he wanted because he was surrounded by yes men.

True, people need to stop treating Lucas like a messiah. The OG trilogie was saved by other people, for example his wife Marcia Lucas who edited the OG trilogie, Jonathan hales, Paul Hirsch, Rick Mccalum and more. The movies were good because he didnt have full control.

But everyone credited Lucas and therefore he was able to decide everything for the prequels and look how they turned out. Good actors giving bad performances due to lack of direction by Lucas, horrible shit dialoge and boring pacing.

Except for beeing a source of memes those movies are kitch garbage.

If these spoilers are true then they really ruined SW altogether for me. I greatly enjoyed TFA, and TLJ as much as any of them, people who hate TLJ are sad salty fucks and I don't really get the hate.

But everything that is the last movie.....it's such a fucking mess. It really sounds like all they did was pick out stuff from recent popular franchises like Harry Potter.

Rey being beaten down by lighting only to be saved by force ghosts is the exact fucking ending of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with Harry being saved by the ghost of his parents, FUCKING REALLY NOW?!

They've pretty much ruined the coolness and mystery to the force at this point. They've cut the balls off of anything evil/dark, the exact thing that made Star Wars cool was this magical serial killer in a black nazi helmet that would choke you to death on a whim replaced by a weak crying emo kid who cant use the force to summon a tissue to wipe his eyes.

I think everybody owes George Lucas an apology for Star Wars 1,2,3. At least his story made sense with the original trilogy.

If you don’t want kitsch then why are you watching a space fantasy movies. As for calling him a Messiah I don’t think anyone has ever called him that. Seems like you are arguing against something nobody is really doing.

Look I know Lucas did not create in a vacuum, that he had a lot of help. But I can still appreciate him as the main creator while admitting he had help. After all part of his role was picking the people he worked with, he helped foster that atmosphere of creativity.

If u don’t like the prequels that is fine. It is obvious they are not as good as the original films that had more outside influence. Still I would gladly take another PT with him at the helm. Lucas may not be God but he’s a lot closer to Him than JJ.

I think what Scorcese said makes sense. There is no new Lucas or Spielberg anymore. JJ could never in a million years make a Jaws or an ET or, indeed, a Star Wars. All you need to do is compare modern films to the heights of 80s blockbusters and the difference is night as day. Where is the modern equivalent of Indiana Jones or Ghostbusters? Nobody is making new IP anymore, not on that level.

George's success as an independent creator is unparalleled. Even if it became more about toys and merch later on, those things allowed him to do whatever he wanted.

People will appreciate the prequels someday. A company run by shareholders could not make quirky movies like those. Even the stilted operatic acting can be attributed to the kinds of films he was homaging.

I'll concede that John Williams, Frank Oz, Ben Burtt, Ralph McQuarrie and others created the iconic sounds and aesthetic of Star Wars, but George had the vision to stay independent.

The merchandise was the fuel that drove the Star Wars machine during the George era.

Every time he wanted to do something like the SEs or Prequels, they would do a big merchandise campaign well before and that money is what went to fund the new project.

The "For the last time ever" VHS release of the OT and the new Kenner toys funded the SEs. Then Shadows of the Empire and the SE VHSs funded Episode I. Shadows also was a "test run" for licensing for the Prequel merchandise strategy.

I mean we’ve gone from Lucas bringing in all his film school pals to work on a movie, as well as trying to create a local independent film studio, special effects, sound, and cgi companies building film tech from the ground up with local talent, to the world’s largest media companies crafting China specific products to increase their market share.

And the toys and merch, that allowed the fans to keep the franchise alive in the downtime, as well as have them help fund the future (prequel and SE) entries. Merch largely is what funded the prequels. Now, toy sales are tanking, and they are actively trying to find new overseas markets rather than cultivating the home grown fan base.

The differences are pretty stark. Nobody needs to hold up Lucas as a messiah to see the change.

Definitely not Rick McCallum. He was the definition of a “yes” man in the Prequel era, I attribute a lot of the PT’s failures to him.

George is an amazing world builder but I don’t think he is necessarily a good film maker. The Star Wars films were better with his imagination and someone else directing. I still think that the OT was lightning in a bottle, nothing else since has come close. It should have been only three films and it’s legacy would have been intact. The franchise has been diluted too much over the years.

To those who still dislike the prequels, watch them again. Compare them with Disney's movies. It's night and day.

I just rewatched Episode I last night and it's impressive how well it holds up. The movie is fun, filled with worldbuilding and interesting details, features two highly memorable Jedi characters, a ridiculously entertaining podrace which still holds up, and one of the most intense lightsaber duels ever.

Not to mention this is when John Williams still had his wits about him, so the OST is brilliant.

I will always love the prequels. Flawed but highly enjoyable and memorable films, unlike the Disney nonsense.

Most prequel hate is because of RLM, which created a cottage industry on YouTube of hating on the prequels. It was $$$ to hate on them.

Now ATOC is still shit with horrible CGI, but Phantom Menace and Sith aren't that bad. All though Phantom Menace would of been a lot better with no Jake Lloyd, making Anakin more Lukes age. Also would of saved us from Hayden since Anakin would of been cast earlier.

The prequels came out at the perfect time for complaining. The internet was just taking off and people were looking for content. It gave an outlet for nitpickers to complain about the smallest things and you had a bunch of manbabies who grew up with Star Wars able to vent online.

The prequels are alright films (AOTC notwithstanding) but they don't feel like Star Wars films. As the films dealt with the immensity of the galactic government, it had to be a bloated experience because they were set in the galactic centre. The OT's locations were always on the fringes of the galaxy, they were a much smaller portrait to paint a picture on. The PT didn't have that luxury, it needed to be grandiose and majestic...and for that reason it lost the Star Wars feeling.

George however put too many of his ideas in the films and there really should have been people there to tell him to rein a few of them in. His hubris causes the films failures but I can't bash his imagination, he was the best world builder in the business.

Thinking big and expanding the universe was a far better decision than what Disney has been up to. Did Lucas get carried away? Sure, but I'll take a filmmaker with passion than a company checking a bunch of boxes.

Besides, you can say the prequels were failures all you want but they still created a whole new generation of Star Wars fans anyway.

Yeah I can’t deny anything you said, to a lot of people the PT is “their” Star Wars. But that Star Wars is different to the films I grew up with.

What Disney have been doing is franchise assassination, they obviously don’t have a clue what makes it Star Wars. And it’s sad to see that Marvel seems to be this generations Star Wars.

It's a sad state of affairs to be sure. It's just kind of nuts that Disney owns both franchises now and their trajectories have been such polar opposites. For any other company botching SW like this would probably sink them entirely but Disney just keeps on trucking.

Eh I’d say some of it is. A lot of it was mainstream. These are archived Jay Leno monologues from the release of TPM and you can see all the same jokes about no girlfriends and super nerds. They were making these same jokes 20 years ago!

1999 was a different time. Nerd culture was not mainstream, not like it is now.

RLM definitely fueled it tho. At some point it’s like we went from critizing them as the big budget b space movies they are to “why are these not actually good movies” a little too far. Like if you had a novelist come in and go through a comic book endlessly trashing the storytelling. At some point it feels like picking on a Flash Gordon film because you can see the strings on the spaceships.

Problem is those same “films must be high art” types were fed by TLJ and the “its the best actual film” hype. Little surprise most of those folks despise the PT with a passion.

Bullshit. That long-ass Phantom Menace review they did was from 2009, the backlash against the prequels began long, long before then. Here's Simon Pegg having a meltdown about the Phantom Menace from 2001:

RedLetterMedia were definitely not the first people to make fun of the prequels. South Park, the Simpsons and many, many more were doing it long before.
