Hideo Kojima says Death Stranding is a reaction to 'Trump and Brexit'

Japanese virtue signaling is hilarious considering their 99% homogenous land is literally impentrable by the laws they have created and the most extreme of antimmigrant policies. My home country of Canada allows 300,000 legal immigrants in a year, of which 90% are of non-european origin.. every single year. If those numbers arrived in Japan for just 3 years, Kojima would be wearing a MJGA hat and praising Kayne, while developing a new tower defense border wall simulator.
So Europeans immigrants are fine? :pie_thinking:
Собирай свои вещи, Иван, мы едем в Канаду!

Skipping this game for two reasons now.
1. As cliche as "walking simulator" is,that is what DS appears to be with combat/action taking a back seat.
2. Another dev getting too political

I miss the MGS 1 -4 days.

Man who lives in an ethnostate with strong social cohesion, strong traditionalist society and extremely low immigration rates shakes fist at those who would prefer the same.

Oh and I won’t be buying death stranding, not that I was going to anyways. Always look a little too out there for me.

Indeed.

Kojima goes even further into the global state of affairs, referencing political issues in both the US and the UK: "President Trump right now is building a wall. Then you have Brexit, where the UK is trying to leave, there are lots of walls and people thinking only about themselves in the world." In Death Stranding, Norman Reedus' Sam Porter Bridges seeks to save the world by delivering packages to remote locations, traversing rocky terrain and fending off those attempting to steal his wares. "The era of today is about individualism," Kojima suggests in the interview - it's clear that Death Stranding is an attempt to reject that.

This Kojima comment is demented. So I guess the "immigrants" flooding into Europe & America for welfare, houses & the good life are all thinking about the world & not their own gain? I think I just vomited a little.

Too deep for me.

Sorry, but this way of reasoning is so childish and simplistic. How can people give him credit when he is being so superficial about such complex matters as today's society and individualism.

It's not just Trump bad, Brexit bad, it's so far more than that.

I think it's more-so caused by those who're afraid of the openness it creates, afraid that their lives will change too much from what they're comfortable with. It's a notion based entirely on ignorance.
Oh yea? So all those skyrocketing crime rates that comes with 3rd world immigration is just because we're afraid of change? Well, i suppose if by 'afraid of change' you mean afraid of young women being gang raped and young men shot to death, something that was almost completely unknown here before 3rd world immigration mind you, then you're right. That's the kind of change i can do without

Didn't you get the Cultural Marxist memo? Every (white) nation & all (white) peoples throughout history who resisted foreign conquest & destruction of their own were simply governed by ignorance & bigotry. Meanwhile third world peoples are all noble defenders of their culture & land.

Wouldn't be surprised if his trump derangement syndrome was the impetus for DS creation. I can literally imagine him sitting with his headphones on, alone, listening to Chvrches and getting inspired about making bonds, making a connection between lonely Japanese gamers in their small apartments with four borders and people closing in with walls and not wanting to form strands with immigrants. The meaning of everyone being the same, and us being social beings, and did I mention the warm emotion that takes over your body by embracing one another?

Deep shit Kojima, deep shit.

So Kojima is an open borders advocate?
It's strange how he thinks more connections can only be a good thing. A lot of the problems in the Western world today have been caused by society's increased interconnection via so-called social media.

Yes. Technology bad. People good!

I remember that DS's first teaser was showed in E3 2016, a few short days before the Brexit referendum. Maybe this event and Trump's election changed the course of the development as well as the plot, but I'm sure the main vision was established by that point. Saying it's a "reaction" to those events seems a bit misleading. I do agree though that the stupid-ass divisive political culture that led to them was already in place.

I haven't played the game yet, but it still is on my radar. As long the political commentary in here is given in a nuanced and "relevant across time" way (like in MGS2), with a compelling plot to back it up, I'm not bothered by what he says. I actually do advocate for "building bridges" and reaching people from all walks of life. We should end this toxic political culture of division ASAP.

Thread title is embarassing and misleading, i dont care if its the article title - you are encouraging terrible journalism and a complete lack of understanding. This place always bitches about how bad games journalism is yet always seems to play right along with their bullshit.

Though considering the thread is filled with driveby comments by people who clearly haven't read the quote (otherwise they would realize how misleading the title is), I don't think most people even understand nuance or what good journalism is.

I mean hell, I've only seen the first few trailers but aren't you reconnecting America? As in a single nation? (Please don't respond and tell me lol, trying to go in blind) As in the comments about lol open borders lol kojima wants terrorist immigrants make no damn sense. Reconnecting America, or any country with such a divide (and Brexit has created a huge divide WITHIN the UK) is a bipartisan goal - society is so fucked up largely because we are disconnected and incapable or unwilling of understanding each other.

But hey, a videogames journalist told me Kojima hates Trump and wants open borders, so obviously I am just going to believe them because videogames journalists are such smart, talented, ethical people.

Can you explain why you hired real life actors for your game and consistantly tweeting about yourself about how you made the game on your own Kojima-san?

I saw this on the BBC and thought it was funny that a comparison is even made.

Perhaps he should look at Japan's own problems before talking about other country's.

I will judge the game on its own merit but these comments are stupid for him to say. If he wants to reject individualism, then start by praising your own team and not using individual actors to make the game some hyped buzzword for your ego.

I don't care about his comments on Trump or Brexit, but I find it hypocritical to state that his game is trying to reject those motions, especially when Japan had done just that in the past.

At least though he has an opinion on the world which I do respect.

I saw this BS posted at the BBC just now. Yet you read it and its pretty clear its not a response versus Kojima just using them as an example. Click Bait headlines...

Plus 'Toxic Gamers' for added effect

So millions of Brits are fed a turd sandwich for decades (the EU), then when some say they want out (with Brexit) they're accused of "dividing" the nation? Whoop-de-doo, how typically devoid of self awareness. Liberals & Globalists are inherently anti-nation & are filled with agendas which are also inherently divisive. Ergo they don't get to dictate "who & what" is divisive.

With regards to Kojima, he named Trump, the wall & Brexit as evidence of people "thinking only of themselves", therefor it's clear as day what his position & stance is. So the thread is accurate, even if you wish to pretend otherwise.

Kojima, the man behind Metal Gear Solid of all things, makes a political statement.

Well, that shouldn't be surprising from someone who makes games like that, let's see if the Internet can be chill and-

Internet: This is most unorthodox, MOST UNORTHODOX!!!

*sigh*, war has changed, but foolishness never changes.

Someone should ask if hes upset that isreal, like Japan the country where he lives, is also an ethnostate with extremely strong immigration policies with a very traditional culture. Like you have to take a blood test to prove your a certain religion to even get married there. Id be very curious what his opinion would be.

You don’t understand. What’s so great about having different countries?

What if we all lived under the same laws and looked out for one another? Would that be horrible?

Are you for real, what kind of culture should we have ? a completely global one ? why not reforming language while we're at it and only create one for everyone to speak

BBC are getting weird. I saw an article yesterday with the headline:
"Frank Lampard: Chelsea manager claims 'we're in really dangerous place' with VAR".

It's accompanied by a 30 second clip in which he clearly says 'we're in a difficult place with VAR'. Not the biggest deal but it's a little bit too transparent what they've done in order to make it more clickable. I love BBC Radio (listen every day) but their online stuff is whack.

I actually fully support Brexit and think its one of the most incredible feats of democracy in a long, long time. But think on it - why is it so divisive? Its because neither side cares to understand why the other side would vote their way. I mean how the fuck can half of the country dislike the EU so much they would vote to leave, and the other side not even consider it would be possible that it would pass? Because obviously there is no communication between them.

Same thing with Trump. The left was absolutely dumbstruck when he won because they couldn't even conceive of a reality where that happened. And that's because they never even stopped and asked WHY someone would vote for him. They just wrote all his supporters off as deplorable racists and never opened a dialog to understand what they care about and what they saw in Trump. And its going to happen again, because they still haven't learned and still dont understand or care to understand why people would vote for him.

Whoa whoa whoa. Talk about massive deflection. A Japanese man is criticising the rest of the world for walling themselves off?

His new nickname shall be Hideo "Cognitive Dissonance" Kojima.

You're right. It's very nuanced and there are many reasons someone would support certain policies or not. What I said is true and a great number of people are basing their decisions on fear of the unknown. But what you say is also true, far more true in certain parts of the world.

I was more-so alluding to the right-wing propaganda that grabs these issues and uses them to drive hysteria and panic, which impedes our ability as humans to move forward with trying to find solutions. Those solutions very well might include strict immigration policies, but we need to be intelligent and not act only on a reactionary feeling.

But I don't think Kojima was even going that deep. He made political comments yes, but I took his comments overall more about the importance of connecting with other humans in general and how even though more people than ever are gaming, we do so more often than not alone.

The problem is. You know why conservative speakers have large hostile protests following them and need to spend massive sums in security? Why many oppose free speech and are pro censorship? Because in open debate their ideas can't stand. It is because one group simply cannot listen to reason and logic, and they are trying to operate outside such, they oppose reality and want their delusions to be let free.

This is the reason places like san francisco are inundated with homeless, needles and feces.

The wall is a stupid idea. Idk what its suppose to do.
The wall is just a fence. Maybe you think there shouldn't be fences around areas border patrol has said are experiencing illegal border crossings?
