In The Future, Hideo Kojima Says His Studio Will Make Films.

For a guy who says that 70 percent of his body is made of movies, this seems like it’s a long time coming.

In a 26-minute BBC documentary on the making of Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima reveals the inevitability.

“In the future, Kojima Productions will also start making films,” Kojima said. “If a person can do one thing well, then they should be able to do anything well.”

Kojima did not clarify when the studio will start making films. Kotaku reached out to Kojima Productions but did not hear prior to publication.

“I think within the next three to four years, everything will move to streaming—games, movies, and TV shows.” We’re pretty much there with TV shows and movies.

“When that happens,” Kojima continues, “movies, TV shows, and games will be competing in the same space.” Kojima is interested in the type of entertainment that will inevitably arise from this competition.

that documentary is really amazing. And kojima gives good reasons why he made Death Stranding.
Seeing that made me extra sad that there are reviewers like edge who could not even be bothered to finish the dam game.. tss
Nathan Brown is a hack. I lose all of my respect for him and his magazine.

It's easy to see why compelling gameplay has taken a backseat in DS. Kojima wants to make interactive films. Going by the video reviews, the lack of challenge in the combat encounters is noticeable in DS. The use of several real actors, the character posters emblazoned with famous names, the soundtrack with real bands, it's all very movie-like. The standard cover doesn't even feature Shinkawa's art, but instead features a recognisable render of Norman Reedus.

Kojima expressed his disdain for video game concepts such as the life bar, unrealistic inventory sizes, etc in that recent Game Informer interview.
It wouldn't suprise me if his future games end up resembling David Cage games – heavy on visual spectacle and story, and light on challenging gameplay.

That’s a risky move.

I just don’t want to see the new studio ‘The Spirits Within’d’. That movie led to the downfall of Final Fantasy as a whole, when what’s-his-face, the creator, resigned in apology or some such thing.

Times change, and Kojima has a great relationship with Hollywood, actors, and ugh, the mainstream media, so it could be different. It’s just that we’re finally in a good place again after the Konami fiasco, and I don’t want to risk that.

Fan subtitles don't capture Japanese dialogue as well as we may think they do.

That was my point. I was waiting for someone to bite.

Chinese or Japanese to English does not do that well, and comes off as too direct, or cheesy at times. Yet lots of Chinese or Japanese cinema and like are revered, even when you see the very same dialogue flaws (in translation).

I am a big fan, but yes his dialogue in an actual 2hr movie, if he even can write a story so concise, would be made fun of by critics. I wouldn't mind seeing him try of course, but rather have him make games instead. Create fun new interactive experiences, instead of just movies where a lot of what makes his games so good would be missing.

How did I ever doubt you, #2?

He writes his scripts in Japanese and unfortunately, when translated, the dialogue comes off as cheesy.

He means non interactive movies as opposed to the semi-interactive the western industry has been plagued with lately. lol

I mean it's a logical step for him but it's not something I really want from him and Kojima Productions. 2 and a half hours just isn't enough to do all the things he wants to do.
