Sony: Our Exclusives Are Too Special and Valuable to Giveaway Day One with PS Now

"No one is going to argue against the value of Xbox’s Game Pass service, but Sony and Microsoft are in different places with their first-party games. While the former has been breaking long-standing records all generation long with releases like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, God of War, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, the Team in Green has been scrambling for hits.

The Redmond firm, to its credit, has pivoted, offering every single one of its exclusives day one with its flagship subscription service. It’s almost certainly a loss-leader – juggernauts like Netflix are still losing money, after all – but the organisation hopes to eventually attract enough members to make the endeavour worthwhile.

PlayStation, meanwhile, is in a different position: its games sell by the bucketload at full-price, and it simply wouldn’t be cost-effective right now to hand them out as part of, say, PlayStation Now. It’s compromised, increasing the value of its streaming service by offering popular – but not brand new – titles like Grand Theft Auto V.

But could we see all PS4 exclusives launch onto the service in the future? “Our stance on the inclusion of first-party games in PlayStation Now in terms of what we've done this month is very different to our stance 12 months ago,” said PlayStation boss Jim Ryan. “Right now, given how some of our first-party IP is incredibly special and valuable, we just want to treat them with amazing care and respect, and have those launches be clean and pure.”

It’s not happening, then, and why should it? The Last of Us: Part II, for example, is almost guaranteed to move over 10 million units when it drops next year, and we wouldn’t expect Ghost of Tsushima to be a million miles behind. The fact of the matter is that Sony doesn’t need to change tactic right now, because the traditional model is working for it."

yeah right, they're so special, I love all the different ways to hide in a bush in all those special 3rd person shooter-stealth games with some dumbed down climbing mechanics thrown in there...
and all the different special ways to slowly walk next to or behind an NPC while all your controls, except for walking, get taken from you...

so special! I can't wait for The Last of BushHidingWalkingSlowlyImmersionBreak 2!

Idc what anyone says Sony's strategy makes the best sense and no one knows exactly what revenue/profits if any Microsoft is pulling in with game pass. From a business point of view its stupid to cannabalize your launch sales of your ips by putting it on a subscription service, of course it doesn't matter if your ips aren't bringing in tht money like thy use to but thts not Sony's case. Sony has no need to do that and their strategy has been paying off with new ips like Horizon selling 10 mil plus.

Well, while I can understand this in a way...the premise really doesn't make sense in the long run. It kinda shows their wavering confidence in a subscription based business model. That's their choice. However once Microsoft stops their $1 Game Pass subscription/drug deal and have people hooked next gen with exclusives from their new studios, the calculus may change.

If they can maintain even half of their subscribers it may make it worth it. I don't know what kinda goals they have in mind but subscription based models thrive off the lack of people forgetting to or being too lazy to unsub. Even at full price, Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate is a steal. So they are also banking on inherent value to keep people as well.

Sony's flip flopped before although they are pretty stubborn. If they start to see blood in the water, they'll switch it up. I think they are just in a wait and see mode right now.

nah, I would feel better if people started to look at games like TLOU as what they are... the most generic gameplay imaginable with the most uninspired leveldesign, wearing some pretty makeup. like an old hooker trying to get business.
and everyone is just looking at the walls of pretty makeup and call them masterpieces, when in reality noone involved was out to make a good game, they were out to make a pretty looking dumbed down piece of software that is easy to consume

Besides, Sony's PSNOW is at pole position in terms of profit and revenue...….Ryan mentioned that they didn't want to speak too much about PSNOW especially in Europe since servers took them longer than usual to setup, but when they recently opened up more servers in Europe, they felt more compelled to push PSNOW a bit more...…..He said, he didn't want to go talking about PSNOW confidently in Europe when Germany was served but Italy was not......Right NOW as PSNOW servers begin to take shape, they are gearing it up for the future....They have almost doubled PSNOW subs from the time they lowered the price and put some really popular AAA first party and third party current gen games on there...…...They've been the only ones in that space for 5 years and leading that space now....If anything, they will be best suited to transition to when game online services become as viable as their first party sales behemoth business....

This makes no sense since Microsoft is hiding the numbers, have lost this console Gen and thus needed to make aggressive moves. Sony's hybrid approach is best and in no way should thy include their exclusives around launch to their sub service from a business standpoint. Microsoft gaming division wished thy were making the revenue and profits Sony has this gen, why change what works?

Every subscription deal isn't a "Netflix" situation and even Netflix is losing money, some are "movie pass" situations destined for utter failure with massive losses of profit. I can almost guarantee you game pass isn't making Microsoft a profit but I guess we just won't know since Microsoft has been hiding more and more numbers as things don't turn out the way they planned.

And let's not forget who started pushing these type services last and this gen and investing.

That's funny. That's exactly how I feel about the Xbox GHF trifecta. Always the same, one of each series out every two years, like clockwork.

But then I remember how the fans of those hook... series just like them that way and expect exactly the same old shit every couple of years.

There's just no accounting to taste.
Then I'm ok with it.

It's better than being childishly pissed at them or the company making money from them, right?

The last of us multiplayer was amazing but i agree the single player was boring.

The problem with this is most of the sony exclusives feel like rentals, I beat them once and im done. Very few of them do i play through multiple times.

That said.... Gears 5 felt like it was made for game pass, its the first Gears game that I just couldnt get into. lack of characters and adding them in as DLC made the game feel like it was made to be a subscription service. So I i had to pick I do like Sonys first party approach over Microsofts.

There's no wavering confidence, there's smart business...…..It's like this gen Sony had PSNOW, but PSNOW would never make them the money quality first games at $60 would...…, so guess where there was heavier investment....

Whilst everybody is going the online streaming route now, Sony was there before all of them, they are not following suit they are leading and are putting everything in place to press it when all the piranhas hit the water and we can see what's left of the flesh.....Remember, Sony always make smart decisions......Do you need this, do you need this now? Just like they knew they didn't need UHD bluray this gen, but it's a forgone conclusion next gen...….Just like they knew they couldn't do quality PS3 BC this gen, but rumors has it they've been working with some contractors (most probably the RPCS3 guys since 2015 on a BC project)…..

It's like this, if you're going to do it, do it well, don't half-ass it....

And I agree completely.

But Microsoft doesnt really care about shitting lots of average cheap games right now, they want the money and space that Steam has right now, they are focusing on their store.

They will probably shut down their console division completely when Scarlett get even lower sales than the Xbox One thanks to Switch2 and PS5 hype machines.

Basically business talk for "We want to sell the products for as much profit as possible".
Here here......At the end of the day company's are about profit and sales......If they don't make P&S, they won't thrive and we won't get the games we love.....

That's why no matter how you slice it, games are the deciding factor.....Well quality games tbh.....If you cant convince persons to buy your games at $60, I think you will have a harder time getting them to sub to a service, especially when the quality of the games you put on that service will go down to keep the much lower ROI in check...

You’re not accomplishing what you think you’re accomplishing.

I wouldn't either. They sell 10 mill+ on a lot of exclusives. They can dump it on PSNOW later. Nintendo wouldn't do it either.

Xbox's strategy seems kind of insane also. But you gotta respect them going all in like that. If they can get the price of their box down I'd consider getting one as a third console just for streaming.

I would love if they do it but let's be real no way in hell they will release their exclusives day 1 there when they're selling 10+ millions

MS is doing it because no one buy their games anymore, they already devaluated their ip's, i know that when next Halo is out i will pay 2$ to play it on gamepass for a month lol

Which policies exactly? Fill me in...…….The only policies I keep abreast of is the policies to keep making great games and a bevy of new IP's every gen, mix up the variety in games etc....but do tell...

Sony has had a policy in effect for at least the last year to censor anything sexual from games on their platform.

Do you think there is a reason for this stance, and if you don't agree with the reason......Do you think their policy on censorship trumps their delivery of games this gen? Is the censorship more important the games they gave us this gen, because if we o that route, every company has a policy or policies we can disagree with...

I think the censorship is a shit policy but it doesn't trump the fact that they put out really amazing exclusives. What does trump the amazing exclusives is their inability to consistently hit 60 fps, so I'll be waiting for them to hit PC or to play them on PS5.

There is absolutely zero reason to censor any game in 2019 when the ESRB exists and it's not censored on other competing platforms. This is like Nintendo censoring the blood in Mortal Kombat.

You say that game sub services (AKA Game Pass) will result in the diminishing quality of product, due to poor returns on investment. However, Microsoft is not just acquiring studios, but is increasing their funding to allow the hiring of fresh new talent for team expansion and budget increases so the scope of their games can grow and improve to meet their vision. In what world does larger budgets and freedom to hire additional talent = game quality "will go down." Microsoft wants GP to have the greatest gaming content in the world and are acting like it. Maybe they are the only console manufacturer that has the massive financial war chest to play this kind of game. In the meantime the Xbox hardcore will enjoy the ridiculous value as MS goes on a spending spree for subs. I think we will see at least one entire console generation (Scarlett) where MS fights hard to make this happen. I won't be surprised if we see an acquisition rate of 1(+)/year for a decade.

I think the censorship policy has been discussed quite a bit, we shall see how they approach things there for PS5...…...As an adult, I agree that your games should not be censored, but the reality is many kids gets access to these games, lots of kids use consoles and the backlash from parents and pure establishments are too great.......Like anything else business need to adhere to ethical leanings as well.....

So maybe there needs to be a better approach as to what games are accessible to minors, but I dont think we should make this thread all about this....I was asking this very question in one of those threads, how do we solve this issue.....Kids playing games just for nudity, being exposed to extreme violence etc...Tbh, most of us grew up accessing our father's porn stache, playing games like soldier of fortune and the like, it didn't affect us as much...….The difference is we went outdoors, we played outdoors too, so we had lots of interaction, the kids these days are a much more volatile bunch...…..They're easily influenced and become shut-ins due to social media, I mean kids are committing suicide because they didn't get enough likes on social media, every subject is more sensitive now, because there are lots of groups harassing these companies with lawsuits etc......surely tell me you at least understand the climate...….It's just a way to protect yourself against all this pressure and perhaps even monetary payouts...…. Perhaps we should lobby a bit more for AO games, but the hypocritical part is all the advocates of censorship would not be want to be seen buying an AO game, even as an adult.....

There's a bigger conversation to be had on the subject, yet I don't think we should do it here...There has been so many threads about it already...….I think in the end, good-games-delivery trumps all...

Although I love GamePass, it does sort of devalue the games that debut on it. And of course opinions are subjective, but Microsoft hasn’t had a great generation for “exclusives” — if you can even call them that since they’re all on PC — while Sony’s studios make some of the best games anywhere, period.

If Sonys studios can continue to make GOTY contenders, I don’t want them on a subscription service if it means compromises or shortcuts are to be made in development or funding or creative freedom, or just expectations in general.

Of course it’s a big industry with a lot of different strategies and room for all types of games, but I generally agree with this sentiment.
