You can't go wrong with either. They're both solid games.
But I'd choose RE7 if I had to choose.
Tew2 is great and is made by the grandfather of survival horror, Shinji Mikami, but I think it's a worse game then it's predecessor. The game kinda looses focus with it's semi open world.
The first one is a true survival horror and it's really scary. If only it didn't use that stupid letterbox screen format. But this can be fixed via some tweaks on the pc.
But re7 is better. A true return to roots for the series. I think you'll enjoy it very much.

RE7 feels like a reinvisioning of RE1, while TEW2 feels like a spiritual successor to RE4.

RE7 achieves what it attempts more successfully and is the better game.

Tough choice. Doubt we'll see a RE8 anytime soon and if you just finished the first evil within then I recommend getting that and afterwards RE7. Obviously most will vote RE7 because it's a better horror game.

I lean more to RE7, but both are great titles and I feel over time you should legit buy both.

They are both too good to be either ors.

Why not both? Both are cheap these days.

Agreed. Can get both used for a total of about 25 bucks.

Ok, I guess the real question is, did you play the evil within 1 and if so, did you like it?

If you did play it, but didnt like it, I'd say pick up the evil within 2. For some reason, people who hate the evil within 1 love 2.

If you played and loved the Evil Within 1, I'd play Resident Evil 7. The Evil Within 2 made a lot of subtle changes to the gameplay and it effectively neuters a lot of what made the original so appealing. If you werent too hot on 1, it's not so bad, but if you loved certain parts of 1, like the gunplay or the booby traps, you come away disappointed as those things simply dont exist anymore, replaced with a more linear, slightly less interesting story.

If you havent played the evil within 1...go buy and play the evil within 1. Shit is amazing.

Both. On black friday they will.both be cheap.

I hadn't played 2 yet, waiting for bf. I played 7 and loved it, except for the last 30 minutes because it did it's best to ruin the rest of the game.

TEW2 IMO. RE7 is more polished but kind of basic in its gameplay. TEW2 offers more enemy and weapon variety, better stealth, combat, bosses, story, and a better protagonist. RE7 has better villains and is scarier (other than one enemy in TEW2 which is the scariest thing I've seen in a horror game in some time). I'd say TEW2 beats out RE7 in replayability (RE7 is insanely linear, though it does have a solid amount of weapon/item unlocks that lend to some solid replayability) too. Also, 3rd person is better than first IMO.

That said, get both. These along with RE2 and Alien Isolation were the best horror games this gen. If you haven't played AI or RE2, consider getting either of those first.

EDIT: Actually, IF you have VR, go RE7. That is a one of a kind horror experience. Otherwise, TEW2.

I owned and played RE2, and liked it, but wanted a few LESS puzzles. I prefer stealth and killing shit over running back and forth solving puzzles.

With that said, which would you recommend?

I won't give details or spoilers. But it went from a creepy and atmospheric game that looked and felt new to the series and felt like it's own thing to suddenly at the end

It turns into an action game with a giant boring monster and you beat it when someone throws you the cliched most powerful gun in the game to finish it off and someone from the previous re games shows up out of the blue when up to that point it had all new characters

It just is just a good and new entry in the series that's quite refreshing, to becoming the worst parts of resident evil 5 and 6 at the last second.

In that case, definitely TEW2. RE7 is similar to RE2 in terms of puzzles. The combat is worse IMO, though boss fights can be kind of cool. Normal enemies are tedious/annoying more than anything. TEW2 has no puzzles that I can remember, and better combat (not to mention tons of it, with better bosses and enemy mobs to boot).

Just don't go in expecting to be really scared outside of a few encounters with a certain enemy. The game is intense more than anything (think RE4). Have you played TEW1?

RE7 is a way better game. Feels a lot fresher too, mixing old and new mechanics. TEW2 isn't bad, of course, just too familiar feeling.

Oh and if the horror factor is the main reason you are getting the game then it's not even a contest. RE7 all the way.

RE7 is the more focused game, so I say go with that one.

The Evil Within 2 was pretty solid too, though, just wish it was anywhere near as creepy and unsettling as the first one, and the open world-esque design gets a bit tiring at times.

I hate first person games and think the camera is inferior. I also don't own VR and never really tried a high quality version of it ever. Shinji Mikami is also one of my favorite directors of all time.

You should still get RE7, and it's not even close. It's a way better game.

I love TEW2, for me it was the perfect game at a time in my life when I needed it. I prefer 3rd person games as well. The game was just a lot more fun to play whereas RE7 just felt like a chore for me. I did enjoy the return of classic style puzzles and inventory management but otherwise TEW2 was better overall for me in every respect. My personal game of that year. I hope you enjoy whichever you choose though. Fortunately they're both pretty cheap these days. I plan on doing a playthrough of both TEW games on my X soon.

RE7. It's way more creepier and uneasy. I got so hoooed i got a platinum trophy and finished it 4 times. TEW felt like a poor mans Last of Us with some flamboyant supernatural mumbo jumbo. Its not a bad game but extremely average one.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Both are good.

Food for thought: I bought RE7 and played about 10 hours or so. It then went onto the back burner for me. It's in my mind as a game I'm going to finish, but new games just keep popping up that I'd rather play first. I beat The Evil Within 2 in one playthough.

Both a good but for different reasons, it really depends on what you like. If you think that RE4 is the best Resident Evil game ever, then maybe you'll have more fun playing The Evil Within 2. I see it more as Mikami trying to play around with the action-horror formula of RE4, basically. Whereas for RE7, I think it goes more into the Alone in the Dark-style gameplay with a focus on survival horror, more similar to RE1 (which was an excellent evolution of the Alone in the Dark formula).

If you have psvr, RE7 is incredible. I could not believe how soulless it felt switching back to my 70inch TV and playing it without VR. That game in particular just sells the "your inside the game" so fucking well.

RE7 is great with its gameplay, the Bakers are all interesting, and it's mostly got good atmosphere. But the lead Ethan and his wife Mia are uninteresting, the enemy variety is LOW, and the second-to-last area isn't quite as strong as what had preceded it (and the last area is just a long hallway shooting gallery. Final boss is a let down too).

Evil Within 2 pretty much nails everything. The cast is all handled great (big step up from 1 where Sebastian's characterization was left to notes, WTF, and honestly Joseph and Kidman didn't have much to them), the villains especially the first are all great, there's a ton of enemy variety, a ton of side quests and unlockables, and it doesn't shit the bed in the third act like the first game did.

RE 7 is great and should definitely be played at some point, but I would definitely give priority to EW 2.

Evil Within 2 is god awful, every unique game mechanic from the first game is gone, what's left is a game with awful controls, awful performance and boring leveldesign.

RE7 is alright, but only that

Damn! Resident Evil 7 is winning, but, the people here explaining the positives of The Evil Within 2 are selling me- They’re saying things that I like in a game.

Again, I have, and like RE2 (the new remake), but I admit that I get a little bit tired of the puzzles (running back-and-forth to find a part here and there). I know that’s what makes a Resident Evil game a Resident Evil game, so it’s my problem, not the game

So I was wondering if RE7 was different and maybe had less puzzles (being they changed it from 3rd Person Perspective to 1st Person Perspective)?

Tew2 is not as good as the first one.
Its a lot more action oriented than the first.
Still fun but if you have the option pick up the first one. Finished both but would rather get RE2 instead to be honest.

Otherwise i would say get re7. Now the last chapter ruins the game but its a great experience.
In vr its amazing but makes me puke after 20 minutes.

Still if you are into these games and like the mix of both even though its a different setting i recommend prey.

RE7 is not that heavy-handed with either the puzzles or the backtracking. They are there of course, but the game as a whole is a lot more linear.

TBH I feel like the only person who liked RE7 more than RE2 remake. Also I was slightly disappointed by TEW2 (unnecessary bloat, tedious semi-open-world segments, boring antagonists, huge drop in terms of art direction and overall atmosphere compared to the first one etc.), so RE7 gets my vote.

Very interesting that ya mentioned that The Evil Within 2 plays incredibly similar to The Last of Us. I bought both RE7 and TEW2 and you’re right: when I play The Evil Within 2, it plays just like I’m playing TLOU.

Why whenever I did/do a search for “Games similar to The Last of Us” hasn’t The Evil Within 2 come up?! I get results such as

Uncharted 4
Red dead redemption 2
BioShock infinite
Telltale The Walking Dead
Etc

Meanwhile TEW2 is almost identical in play, game mechanics, approach, stealth, shoot, craft, explore, item pickup, map, workbench...etc

If VR is an option then it's RE7 without question.

TEW2...it's quite good but despite improvements over the first I couldn't help but feel how much more I liked said first game...

Though you seem to be looking for action and stealth over all else, so of the two, TEW2 is what your're looking for(RE7 doesn't become action heavy until like the last 30%.).

I skip Resident Evil 7 because first person exclusive and more like Silent Hill game instead the origins one, ironically i love The Evil Within 2 because the atmosphere and enemies more like resident evil origins but sadly is not great even i love this game.

But i recommended The Evil Within 2 and Resident Evil 2 Remake (too short but still loved it), what i hate all about Resident Evil 7 is just first person exclusive.
