October 2019 NPD - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare takes the top spot overall, Luigi's Mansion 3 is the best-seller on Switch

October sees a couple of strong debut titles.

Every month, the NPD Group releases information on the top-selling games across all video game platforms in the United States. While it doesn't account for worldwide sales, it does provide a good snapshot of one the largest video game markets. Mat Piscatella, an analyst for NPD, has shared the results for October 2019. For this month, data was tracked from October 6 through November 2, 2019.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare had a massive launch, taking the #1 spot for the month overall. Obsidian Entertainment's RPG The Outer Worlds also did well, grabbing the #2 spot for the month, while Nintendo exclusive Luigi's Mansion 3 grabbed the #3 spot. Grand Theft Auto V, the game that just won't stop selling, snagged an impressive spot at #14. The Nintendo Switch was, yet again, the bestselling console of the month.

Here are the numbers for the October 2019 NPD results:

  • Total: $1.03 billion, down 34% year-over-year from $1.57 billion
  • Video games hardware: $182 million, down 41% year-over-year from $307 million
  • PC and video games software: $620 million, down 22% year-over-year from $983 million
  • Accessories and game cards: $231 million, down 4% year-over-year from $277 million

The Witcher 3 and Overwatch being behind 2 1/2 year old games; so sad.

Congratulations to Outer Worlds and Luigi. Modern Warfare dominates like usual.

Very happy with MK11's success. Imagine the budget and graphics Netherrealm will have for Injustice 3. Holy shit.

Some highlights on October spending

Hardware spending overall was down 41% compared to October 2018, to $182 million, with the Switch being the only console which saw its sales increase both in October as well as year-to-date.

Meanwhile, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint had to settle for No.6 for its first month in the charts, while WWE 2K20 debuted at No.7. Ring Fit Adventure seems to have performed quite well in the US, entering the October charts at No.10.

Total spending across hardware, software, accessories and game cards reached $1.03 billion in October.

But it didn't reach the heights of October 2018, which had been the best October month of the past decade, with $1.57 billion spent -- October 2019 had to settle for second best October of the decade.

Whoever gets the price and spec right for the next-gen will win the battle in the US.
3rd party titles are the main drive and primary reason for those consoles sales.

The Fuck? Anthem in the #8 spot?!

Mainly first month sales (where everyone tried it out for the next Destiny like/big Bioware rpg.
And #8 with the potential to drop further is abysmal for what it is/wants to be and its development costs.

Sad times before next-gen.

Pretty much par for the course tbh.

The newest hardware is up year-on-year.

PS4 / XBO will be seven years old when their successors launch. And the price of PS4 [the market leader] isn't where it should be for a market leader. should be a permanent $199 to blow the doors off. IMO.

So it's really PS4 with MK11 vs. Xbox with Gears 5.

Ring Fit charted? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I’m fine with that; it got lots of good buzz.

Pretty sad for XBox that the best selling exclusive for them only is #10. What's even more shocking is no PS4 exclusive in their top 10. Of course Nov 2019 I expect Death Stranding to remedy that and probably for several months until TLOU2 comes. It does highlight that Days Gone flopped badly.

Days Gone is far from a flop. It charted in its first 2 months unlike Gears 5.

Very, very glad to see Luigi's Mansion 3 selling well, it was absolute blast and the animation was phenomenal.

Very awesome seeing Luigi's Mansion 3 at the top despite launching at the end of the month. I wonder if it sold more than Dark Moon did at it's launch, it clearly beat it in dollar sales but I would like to know unit sales.

Would've liked to see Witcher 3 and Overwatch a bit higher.

Sure, but it isn't on a "free" service on PS4. The fact it's charted so high on Xbox means that people bought it rather than actually played it on GP.
It is US where the user base is only 2m differenc and games trend to be close to 50/50.
The fact the Xbox version is lower in chart just shows most choose Gamepass over it.

Without Gamepass it would be ahead NFL and Breakpoint.

User base is only 2m difference between what? Seeing as MS haven't released figures for years I'm interested to know where you're getting that from.

Also 4th is still high. Top 5 is considered good sellers so it's not a good sign for the service that offers the game for free when a lot of people are still paying full price for it.

NPD buddy.

It is a bit over 2m... probably around 3m today because I hat figure is a for early this year.

Yeap 4 th is below Breakpoint that sold overall 6th... that is not good... that tells us most sales come from PS4 and Xbox did low in comparing to 50/50 most games split in US... Gamepass hit it launch sales.

What bizarro logic when many were surprised Days Gone sold and Charted so well first couple of months it was out. In some areas being top selling or 2nd best selling ps4 exclusive for 2019 🤔

Yup it was a flop lol 😁
