American millennials' mental and physical health is on the decline — and they're on track to die faster than Gen X

Stop drinking so much sugary soy lattes and sitting on your asses all day millennials. You're killing yourselves. Literally. Or keep pretending you're depressed because of Tr*mp and other nonsense. None of my concern.
Wonder how many millennials out there are actually depressed compared to ones that make themselves depressed by reading bad news on twitter all day.

American millennials aren't exactly the picture of health.

They're seeing their physical and mental health decline at a faster rate than Gen X did as they age, a new Blue Cross Blue Shield report found.

The report attributed this millennial health decline to both physical conditions, such as hypertension and high cholesterol, and behavioral health — particularly rises in rates of depression, hyperactivity (such as anxiety or ADHD), and substance abuse.

The report found that rates of depression and hyperactivity among American millennials increased by about 30% from 2014 to 2017.

These findings are underscored by previous reports that analyzed data from Blue Cross Blue Shield's Health Index. One found that major-depression diagnoses were rising at a faster rate for millennials and teens than they were for any other age group.

(Okay, I need to chill :messenger_tears_of_joy:)

Seriously, if what Matt pointed out is correct, I can’t imagine letting yourself be so stressed out over a real estate developer from New York, who’s a pretty average Republican President (maybe even Dem, a decade ago), that you shorten your life expectancy. Absolutely insane.

Media has some culpability there too, with starting mass panics over absolutely nothing.

I dunno man. Millennials have kind of a rough thing going on. I've tried for years to get on the straight and narrow and found a lack of good job options, in addition to shitty renting situations, is getting to me now that I'm reaching 30. Will blame myself for some relationships not working out but it feels like I'm a bit fucked sometimes because I'm not in a LTR (splitting costs and all that).

Agree that the ones who use words like 'Yeet' and are addicted to Instagram when they're 23+ are not helping themselves but it sometimes feel like 'fuck me' for not joining them.

No they don’t. The world is softer than it has ever been. The problem is that the people are too. Do you think you have it any worse than your grandparents? There are opportunities all over — you just need to be willing to relocate to them.

Agreed but it's not always easy. I moved in a with a buddy earlier this year to look for a new job after a fixed-term contract ended. Went on several interviews over 3 months but got nowhere before taking a job back in the city my dad lives close to, just because I could pretend I lived there. Went through about £2000 of savings on that and it kinda boils my piss :messenger_expressionless:

I was definitely stressful without being life-ending. I've been in that situation once before in my life but it was a lot easier because I was in a LTR at the time (again, could split bills).

The older I get the more I realize it's better to break rules to get ahead than to follow orders like a good little boy. As long as you keep your mouth shut, get your hustle on and keep a low profile, there is plenty of money to be made. Take the risks others aren't taking.

Here's a real true to life pro-tip: if you find a hustle which becomes lucrative, tell no one, never ever. Don't bring in your friends, your family, your loved ones, nobody. With quick money, ppl will quickly sour and turn on you to get theirs.

lol @ everyone celebrating their own deaths. Everyone born from 81 to 96 is a millennial.

I'm over here living the 1950's dream life; my kids are gonna be running the fuckin show next decade. All the kids with single moms who give them shamrock shake colored undercuts don't have a chance!

Social media— and, hell, media in general— has a lot to do with this. Media basically lives to piss people off now. CNN does nothing but post articles that serve to rankle readers about Trump, sending the blood pressure of these millennials through the fucking roof. Media today encourages millennials to be offended by everything.

All of this incitement is just added on top of shit that any generation would be stressed out over— job woes and financial struggles have affected pretty much everyone from every time period. Worry about that shit instead of being angry about every fucking thing because media tells you that you should be.

I'm with you guys ROMhack ROMhack and triplestation triplestation . I'm currently lucky enough to be in a family-run position that's working out decently, but before that (and possibly after, nothing lasts forever...) was a mess of lucking into jobs that looked good on the surface but ended up being depressing shit.

Though part of that is almost certainly my own dumb fault for picking video games tech for higher education instead of compsci 🤦

Agree with that. There's real problems and then there's problems people invite through association with stimulus that doesn't have an immediate affect on them. Proliferation of media - and not just social media - is one of the weirdest and most obvious negative things about our age. It affects older people but very much millennials due to inexperience/age.

Not sure what can be done but I'm a big fan of calling out bullshit and avoiding things if it only serves to make somebody else's fat ass richer. Such things come with age.

They are too busy trying to cancel something, rather than do something productive. It has to be stressful.

When you’re conditioned to be angry at everything and feel that it’s your duty to make it all go away— instead of doing the healthier thing and worrying more about yourself— then, yeah. Stress increases, blood pressure soars, and you’re more likely to drop dead sooner.

Being perpetually angry has physical consequences... and it’s a choice to be angry about everything. A self-destructive choice.

Gen X/Boomers should be scared, if they have pensions/etc. Where are those tax dollars to fund those woefully underfunded pensions going to come from? Lol

At least most Millennials should be under no delusions they'll ever see something like Medicare/Social Security/retirement in a large amount of cases. It'll just be business as usual.

Sorry to double quote but that's a really good point. Does seem that younger people are obsessed about changing the world when they probably can't..

Haha yeah probably. I co-majored in Film for my first degree so if we're comparing dumb ass moves... :messenger_sunglasses:

Glad things are working out for you now. Life can be a long, and sometimes not pleasant, road :)

It'll be even worse for the zoomers. Healthcare and housing costs continue to rise, productivity goes up but wages stagnate, the rich get richer but the poor get poorer.

Pensions will be unfulfilled, social security will wither away, the labor force will start to decline but as long as I got memes nothing is gonna get to me

don't be defined by some report on generations
QFT

It seems that the millenial gen is getting a bigger taste of the media/press beating stick by coinciding with the information age and the rise of clickbait.

Purely anecdotal, but the difference in the amount of articles on millennials vs articles on zoomers, boomers and whoever else-oomers seems kind of incongruous.

As someone else mentioned, the press exists largely to piss people off for clicks these days, so I wouldn't be mildshock.gif if all the statistical generalization was targeted specifically to poke folks into clicking with "millenials this", "millenials that", "you won't believe what this millenial did", and other generalizations that feed into the feeling of "fuck off no i don't" or "lolol stupid other generations" 🤔

Give it 10ish years and i guess we'll see if the clown shoes and baggy trousers get passed onto the next gen for their apportioned roasting.

Seems like the world correcting itself. Having that generation be substantially shorter in influence would be a good thing for the world.

This being said as a borderline Gen X/millennial who identities as a Gen X’r

if those people can't stand a right wing president for 4 years term then imagine they getting a left wing president instead and then have to wait 8 years or more to get rid of it from power.

"substance abuse"... stop drinking and smoking pot.
I would have to agree. Too many millennials these days guzzling craft beer and smoking weed 24/7.
Oh ya, forgot about that, since I don't do drugs, and don't buy fancy craft beers.

On one hand, people should be living longer since the trend is healthier eating, being vegan or vegetarian, more water and less pop, and there's definitely more people with gym memberships than 20 years ago. Add these all up and it should be healthier living and longer lives.

But then there's weed, fancy booze and daily Starbucks runs with 800 calorie frappacinos, which they think is 40 calories like it's a coffee with a cream.

And people jumping off a bridge because they saw that their high school friends on Facebook just posted they bought a new car and have great family pics, while they have nothing.......... too late to resurrect from the dead because if you knew better, your friends are actually just as broke as you and going through a divorce with custody battles in court.

I don't drink any of that lame shit nor smoke. But I am slowly killing myself with the amount of potato chips I eat in a year. Weird ass millennial am I.
