Microsoft: Scarlett games will work across the whole Xbox family

This was strongly hinted at previously by Phil with remarks of going generation-less but now it looks to be confirmed.

Xbox's Matt Booty says that Microsoft isn't holding any games back for the Scarlett because the new releases for the foreseeable future are intended to be playable across the whole Xbox family.

When Scarlett launches there will still be the Xbox One S out there, there will still be Xbox One X, and we really need to approach that family of devices, the same way we approach PC - content scales to meet the device.

We will absolutely lean in on the power of Scarlett, we think is going to be the best way to play and it will be the best thing you can put in your living room, but we also want to understand that there will be a family of Xbox devices out there.

I hope this plan only applies to the start of the new generation. Imagine something like the new God of War being released on the PS3 and having to run in very low details. Not to mention you can't make new CPU or physics heavy games at all (rip Crackdown 4 ;))

Terrible terrible news.

So no game even in the future is gonna be developed with only scarlett in mind? They really want an ancient hardware to put a brake on next gen core design of games??

Am i understanding the news correctly??

Are they fucking nuts or what??

Imagine horizon 2, gow2 etc. Being slowed by ps4 hardware...

Like many people in this thread, you're jumping to conclusions.

Quote from the article

foreseeable future does not mean there won't be any games that use Scarlett as the base. I'm sure we'll see plenty cross-gen PS4/PS5 games as well.

it's not true tht you can't take advantage of new hardware if you have to make it playable on old hardware. You can still play modern PC games on hardware from 6-7 even 8 years ago it just looks worse compared to modern equipment. it will mean more effort on the developers part to make it scaleable but it's not impossible.

People are overreacting.

You can play modern PC games with six year old graphics cards...... Does this mean PC games are being held back?
I mean, yes.

A PC game that had the best possible components on the market as it's minimum requirement would be absolutely fucking insane.

That's why third party multiplatform ganes don't tend to look anywhere near as good comparatively to system exclusives, even with massively bigger budgets.

I'm sure they can pump up The Grafix so people can see it is a "next gen" game. But wonder what will happen if they put a ps5 game next to it

Every generation even gaming enthusiasts seem to have amnesia. Did everyone forget that PlayStation 2 was getting cross gen titles several years into the PS3’s life? Doesn’t mean it held back the PS3.

I mean I would go as far back as the Atari 7800 to give examples of this but that would mean most of the complainers wouldn’t be alive. And it seems to me that history seems to go back about 5 years for them.

If these games take the cross gen route of this gen, then things will not be good

Some “true” next gen games got botched due to cross gen: Watch Dogs, Dragon Age Inquisition, Destiny, Dark Souls 2 (probably), Shadow of Mordor

AC Black Flag was good, but there were mostly graphical differences between both versions

People also seem to always forget that exclusives are meant to be a showcase for everything the new consoles can do that the previous generation couldn't.

Given how massively this generations lousy CPU's have limited what games can do, making everything new have to be able to run on them is hobbling not just the graphics, but the gameplays potential as well.

If the X is the baseline then it's understandable.

If it's the OG Xbox One/S then they are setting themselves up for all kinds of problems.

Yes.

And if anything PC titles are being held back by these shitty arse console potato CPU's.

I'd prefer they take the approach of distinct generations if talking about first-party content. I think it's easier for developers to target specific hardware and not spend time gimping and thinking about what they have to add / cut in order to make a game work on older hardware. Ray -Tracing is going to be a fairly big feature next-gen. As a developer would I want to honestly develop RT plus assign resource to baked lighting in the same game? You want to showcase what you have and it has to look it's best against the competition.

You think Sony are going to target GoW2 or the next Horizons game for both PS4 and PS5? Absolutely no chance. MS need to put their best foot forward as well.

I mean, I can literally turn better physics on in some PC games. Why would this be any different?

Cross-gen titles will always be a thing even among exclusives. No one trying to make money on video games is going to just let 40-50 million potential customers that already own an Xbox console fly by them and wait for them to pick up the new, expensive console before buying the first two years worth of games.

You don’t have to like it for it to be true. We shouldn’t be acting surprised by this trend when we’ve had years of precedent happening.

Ok, you want to program in multiple different types of physics and say, enemy density?

What do you cut then, that you could have had otherwise, to keep within the budget and release schedule?

There is not an infinite amount of time, money and monpower. If you want to add in options for different hardeare, you're taking from that limited pool of resources to do the same thing multuple times. Not only that, but that also multiplies the amount of testing and troubleshooting that one part if development requires, including in post launch suppirt and updates.

Yeah this is how I'm reading it, and it is not really computing. This sounds ridiculous. Which is kind of par for the course in regards to new Microsoft console reveals I guess.

I mean, you say that but show me the PC that is playing Red Dead Redemption 2 at 4k 60fps.

So scarlett will just play xbox one s games at native 4k/60fps? Will consumers see it as just another xbox one X?

Yes, just like it affects one x and pc.

OH wait. It doesn't.

If a game on base Xbox can run at 4K30 on an X in a lot of cases, then the scarlet should have no trouble pushing that 4k30 to 4k60. Which echos a lot of what’s been posted about how MS are looking to target higher FPS going forward.

No one is saying this will be every game, a set frame rate standard doesn’t exist and it’s up to the devs on how to distribute the available resources.

Edit: PC comparisons are a waste of time bringing up in this subject. This is fixed hardware we are discussing,

They should at least kicked base Xbox One with that terrible DDR ideia.

that Jaguar cpu will be the biggest hindrance. They could over come the GPU related issues by running at 720p, but nothing will overcome the CPU. It will limit game design.

I really hope this only pertains to the launch window.

I meant situations in which the demand for CPU power is too high even to run it in low settings. Many current-gen games already struggled with that heavily (Control is one of recent examples) and it's only going to get worse with next-gen titles. It's definitely a bad decision if you want next-gen games to feel next-gen, not like current titles with better graphics.

I agree with you, but games are so scaleable these days. It's not like they don't know that they are competing with Sony, so I'm sure the Scarlett versions of the games will be top notch with tweaks that will take advantage of the console.

exactly this.

you can already forget halo 6 with more enemies and vehicles on screen at once, major physics overhaul, how dense and big are the maps, better ia, destruction and interaction with the scenery etc.

just imagine rdr2 on ps3 and x360...

they are not gonna develop 2 completely different games, they are gonna develop on xone and then upgrade some textures, framerate, shadow, lod, etc, but the core game would be the same.

and if they don't do that, good luck on selling the pezzent version of halo 6 without the major improvements of scarlett version to the halo fanbase...

how can you take advantage of a faaaaar better cpu when you have to run the "same" game on a shitty jaguar cpu?
and don't forget better gpu, hard disk, ram etc.

rdr2 on pc is basically the same game with double the framerate, better iq, better lod and some better light and shadows, but the core, the physics, how big and dense are the location etc. are exactly the same.

They are forcing every next-gen Xbox game to be based around the base Xbox One???

This can't be true. This would be horrible. They're basically releasing another Xbox One then. No matter how powerful the Scarlett is, it will always be limited by the base Xbone which was weak when it released in 2013.

I hope I'm just misunderstanding.
