Rumour: Valve is about to announce a VR game called Half-Life: Alyx

We'll believe it when we see it.

Update: According to a new transcript of the leaked interview, Half-Life: Alyx will be shown at The Game Awards on December 12.

Original story: This November 19 will mark the 21st anniversary of the release of the original Half-Life, and according to rumor it will also be when Valve announce a flagship virtual reality game called Half-Life: Alyx.

Valve are rarely interested in celebrating their own game's anniversaries, so take this rumor with a mouthful of salt. The source is apparently the same leaker responsible for the DOTA Underlords leak, and is quoting from an interview between "Geoff" (Geoff Keighley, in his capacity as the creator of the "Final Hours" documentaries about Valve games), Robin Walker (co-developer of Team Fortress 2 among other games), and an unnamed third person.

"March 2020, "Half-Life: Alyx" comin' out", says Geoff in the transcript.

Responding to the question of whether this game would be available for players without VR headsets, "I mean we would love to be delivering a version of this that you could play with a mouse and a keyboard, but like as we said, it began as an exploration of VR," an unnamed person replies.

As for how this entirely hypothetical game would play, the only clue is this statement: "You can see their whole body-- Respond to the situation. You know, panicking, dropping clips on the ground as they fumble their weapons 'cause a zombie's in front of them, all these things, they're just - it's been really fun watching playtests."

I've reached out to Valve for comment and will update this story if they reply.

Edit: In case you haven't guessed it by now, this is a rumour. Or a rumor.

RUMOR/RUMOUR!

I've always been against this idea.

Imagine the slap in the face it would be to have more Half-Life... but not the one we've been waiting 12 years for.

From the Google doc:

Update: Before you read, here's something you should know: PC Gamer decided to run this story, with this document linked inside of it. This was an awful decision on their part, as it has the possibility to delay the actual teaser, or release of the game. You should be ashamed of yourselves for deciding to run a story for clicks alone. I personally ask that you stop supporting them, and support Tyler McVicker, a content creator who runs stories on Nintendo, Valve, and Bethesda instead, as he puts much, much more effort into his content. If you're looking for full information on HLVR, and HL:A, I suggest this video.

Screw you, PC Gamer, and screw your standards.

Sincerely, NCE, and the rest of the VNN community.

"How dare someone post about the leaked news we leaked?!"

EDIT:

> V.R.
Thank God.
I can finally forget about it and return to my normal life of assuming Half-Life is dead.

Wasn't him the one who leaked the Portal Beta stuff that modders planned to be fixed and released officialy?

I paid good money for this Dynex!
It's somewhat believable in that, if Half-Life did return, I'm sure Valve wouldn't give people the thing they actually want. IE: HL3.

A VR spinoff doesn't mean HL3 is magically barred from existing.

But yes I can already envision the mass youtube downvotes for the announcement teaser. And the claims that its woke even though Alyx was introduced into the series 15 years ago lol

Too soon, VR is not yet ready for the masses. or it could be nothing more than a low/middle budget.

Its Valve so you will need a NASA computer + $900 HTC Vive.

It's not too soon for this game, it's too late, Half-Life has only a bunch of devoted fans left and even if HL3 came out today it wouldn't be such a huge event anymore.

Imagine how mad half life fans gotta be when the sequel is some shitty VR title.

Well they gotta sell their hardware somehow.

Valve has been working on this game for years, this is not a rush job or low budget. The whole company is currently working on it. And the whole reason Valve is doing this in VR is to give VR a boost.

FYI, Valve has already mentioned that the Index will not be mandatory to play the game. Any SteamVR compatible headset would do.

If the rumor turns out to be true... I'll finally have a Christmas present to look forward to.

I'll take anything HL-related, but Merle Dandridge has repeatedly said she's not working on anything to do with Half-Life. So, unless she was just hiding all of that, or unless they got another actor or whatever, I don't see this being the case. Well, unless there is no voice this time around because it's VR. I don't know. I'm not an expert.

I am afraid because a VR based game with a female protagonist in a non-historically accurate setting hits so many checkmarks that this forum may implode!

Quote from Gabe:

At a media roundtable, founder and president Gabe Newell said that “right now we're building three VR games,” not just short titles like Vive minigame collection The Lab. “When I say we're building three games, we're building three full games, not experiments

If you like Valve games and not VR, prepare to be pissed at least once.

Valve News Network did a video on the subject a couple of weeks ago and the game will be a prequel of sorts for HL2 where you play Alyx before she meets Freeman.
My greatest fear is that it becomes the killer app for VR and I don't have the dough for it. Fingers crossed they release the Source 2 SDK along with it already.

Non-historically accurate? Didn't they teach you about the Combine invasion in history class?

Too soon? That makes literally no sense. People have been asking "Where are the VR games?!" for ages, and while those people never know what good games there already are, this one will be forever ingrained in their minds considering what franchise we're talking about.

Fuck some VR bullshit.
The only bullshit here is your entitlement.

I'd bet some pretty good money that this ends up being one of the best games of the generation and you eat crow.

Haha. What you wanna lose on that bet?

Should everyone suddenly get interested and buy niche VR just because of half life?

I never said everyone should get suddenly interested. Breath of the Wild certainly didn't get everyone, meaning all core gamers interested in a Switch and that was a 9th gen console rather than a 1st gen product like VR. I'm talking about game quality here, nothing else. The stuff that actually matters at the end of the day.

They blew their goodwill a long time back as far as HL goes. Pushing out some VR promotion and slapping the HL tag on it doesn't really cut it when we are talking about a franchise they just let die on the vine for a decade, least of all when the basically didn't even have the decency to wrap up what they started with the episodes. They want to buy some goodwill? HL1 + Hl2 + EP1 & 2 remasters with 3 as the cherry on top using the lastest Source tech.
