Which franchise/series do you want to see return to its roots the most?

For me it's Tomb Raider. Thanks to the reboot trilogy the series has completely lost its identity at this point (not that the LAU trilogy was much better to begin with). Lara is also a completely different character in the recent games.

What franchise/series you want to see return to its roots?

For me it would be Castlevania and I mean it's 2D side scroller roots. The newer 3D games were good but idk there's something about the 2D Castlevania tht make them feel better imo. Give me a 2D Castlevania with 3D backgrounds and all the bells and whistles and I'll be happy.

The PlayStation and Xbox brands/Franchises, I want them both to go back to 2003 or so. I used to have so many games to buy and look forward to, this gen sadly was a disaster I only have 90 games for Xbox One and 75 for PlayStation 4 with nearly all the exclusives that are good for each. Some of those games have aged badly.

I had 145 Xbox and 201 PS2 games, 225 360 and 185 PS3 games. There was no "Cool" console type this gen, and it seems that as we go forward the industry seems to be aiming to become more dramatic more than anything, and Nintendo never has anything interesting.

Actual game series is tough because in order to have a game return to their roots the game series would have to still be alive, and all my favorite franchises are dead or have been on Hiatus for 5 years or more.

Battlefield. DICE hired Trauma Studios (Desert Combat developers) and they pretty much destroyed the license.

In my opinion Forgotten Hope was the real Battlefield 2 and Forgotten Hope 2 the real Battlefield 3.

Road to Rome was great and Battlefield 1943 was almost good.

As I clicked on the thread title I thought "I better read Tomb Raider when I open this".
Lets watch this gif and cry together for what we have lost. :(

I recently played through some of TR2 again. I died more in the first level then in the entire reboot trilogy.
I also played it on my Vita. First i replayed the whole of TR1 and now i'm in Bartoli's Hideout in TR2. It took me a while to get used to the lack of a proper L2/R2 and the Vita is a bit uncomfortable to hold when playing these types of games for long sessions but after a while the controls became once again second nature. Such amazing level design, atmosphere and a Lara with an unapologetic iconic, and very British posh humor.

My two most requested "return to its roots" were heard by Capcom this year: Resident Evil and DMC.

My third request is Castlevania. In the best case scenario it returns as a HD Classicvania. But I accept a Metroidvania also.

well Halo is the obvious one, and Infinite is looking very promising.

but other than that, I second Tomb Raider, because the new ones are just not Tomb Raider...

Castlevania is another obvious one I agree with, but actually back to the roots of a more linear, challenging and methodical game, with challenging platforming and enemy encounters that rely on precision and a fighting system that's not too complex but engaging.

similar to a linear Dark Souls but with platforming and enemies shouldn't tank too many hits.

Halo is my big one.

Someone earlier detailed Command and Conquer I support this.

I would say Need For Speed to Underground, Most Wanted era but they have been doing better with this gen entries aside from Online only, and Microtransactions and god awful story telling.

I like the New reboots, but they feel phoned in with wah-wah music and so-so graphics. All the production and creativity gets poured into the 3D titles.
It also doesnt help that playing nsmbu is almost like playing a bigger nsmbds despite being more of a sequel.

all of them just look, play and sound the same.

meanwhile you can actually tell the difference between the 8-bit trilogy, world and land for the gb just from how they look and play. (Ie, smb looks and plays differently from smb2 to smb3 and to smw, etc.)

Doom 1 and 2 were equal parts creepy and atmospheric and heavy metal blast-a-thons.

Doom 2016 was more the latter, and while I still loved it, I hope Doom Eternal dials up the disturbing art and foreboding atmosphere cause 2016 felt lacking in that area compared to the originals.

Resident Evil please. If done right, fixed and or panning camera angles along with classic survival horror gameplay would be a dream come true. A few hours ago, I fired up Resident Evil CODE Veronica X in Dolphin VR and bugs aside, it was pretty blissful being able to move your head around to view the scenery, as if your view was the panning camera angle. So imagine that...a made-for-VR classic RE with your head as the panning camera angle...one can dream.

I change my answer to this! This game is one of my all-time favs and I can't believe I forgot about it. I think I blocked it out of my memory as it's too traumatic to think about.
I hear you. This game has such a special place in my heart. It's my first online game. My first clan experience. I spent most my college years stoned and playing it.

Kingdom Hearts, after the first one they got rid of all the mysterious atmosphere and injected it full of anime bullshit and unwanted filler and ruined the lore by convoluting all the ansem shit and destroying the platforming elements and (eventually) ruining the combat and....and...and...

Grand Theft Auto. Don't get me wrong, I loved V but the sandbox feeling like you had in previous entries where you could screw around is something that I really miss in the latest games.

You literally get a wanted level for just looking at a cop too long. Furthermore is the cop diffculty ridiculous and annoying. Losing your tail feels like a chore.

Even the cheat codes are very limiter. In quantity and even duration!? Rockstar games are trying to make their games too serious. I guess that'd why games like Saint Row do do well.

Final Fantasy.... back to its root as in "when it was good".

Also, Darksiders. The first game and to some degree the second one felt like they were trying to make a Zelda style game with a more "badass" setting.
3 felt more souls inspired and this new one looks more like Diablo. I'd love to see them go the Zelda style of the original.

Ghost Recon and R6. Both have veered so far off from what they once were that it's laughable what they've become.

R6 as near as I can tell is off fighting
Aliens monsters?
in its next incarnation, while GR lost its identity and became 3rd person Far Cry watered down with UBIsoft game mechanics that's present in every one of their games.

I miss the days when R6 would give you an AI controlled squad, allowed you to draw up a breaching plan of attack, hit the play button and jump into the action while that plan you drew up played out. While Ghost Recon somehow became a survival ARPG featuring quests and loot.

At this rate I fully expect UBI's next Splinter Cell to take place underwater where Sam has to lead a next generation of hipster agents in recovering a time machine from a devious cult of mermen who worship a giant talking squid monster.

At this point they might as well retire Tom Clancy's name.
