Top 5 sci-fi films, prove me wrong!

wants to fuck an Asian grill.
But it's also silly and "fun", which is the opposite of what I personally find to be a good film. If a kid could enjoy it, I probably hate it. A serious reboot of The Matrix would be a masterpiece.

I know what you mean, but having rewatched it recently, can't say I got that impression. There's a few fun moments like Neo's dojo training and a couple one-liners but overall it maintains a serious tone. Certainly more serious than T2 which had a theme park attraction, a Guns N' Roses music video tie-in, and a vast lineup of action figures.

I won't bother listing my picks since most have been mentioned, so I'll give my one mention to a film that I'm somewhat shocked hasn't been mentioned yet, Dark City. Insanely underrated, I feel. Love it.

Anyone else like Sunshine by Danny Boyle?

I should really rewatch Sunshine. It just didn't click for me when I saw it at the cinema. But so many people like it that I now wonder if I was just missing something and would now appreciate it.

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
The Matrix, proven masterpiece
District 9
Terminator, clearly the best Terminator
Star Wars Episode 4
Avatar, highest grossing film of all time

My own 5 favourites :
Gattaca
Her
Total Recall (by Cameron Verhoeven)
Minority Report
Contact

I love movies like Sunshine, Predator, Terminator etc., but they're more "genre movies in a futuristic setting" than full science fiction. (to be honest I'm still not sure about Total Recall)

2001: A Space Odyssey
Alien
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Robocop
Terminator 2: Judgement Day

This is a very good list. I'd substitute Star Trek 1 for II, as that is a hard as fuck sci-fi movie. It's not popular, but the tone and subject matter is delightful compared to later entries (to me).

No order and more than 5... My fav is Pitch Blackout of those
Pitch Black
Chronicles of Riddick
Matrix
Total Recall
Snowpiercer
Mad Max Fury Road is technically sci-fi
Interstellar
Back to the Future might be sci-fi
Predator
Terminator
Event Horizon (not only horror)
Equilibrium
The Thing

I thought the same thing.

It's just as bad on rewatch.

I only have 4 off the top of my head lol. The rest (basically Star Trek, Quantum Leap, Twilight Zone) are TV shows.

TRON
This movie was made at the right time: just after they moved past utility and into entertainment but before they became complex enough to do everything for us. Ironically, a certain character poses that scenario even as TRON was banned from Special Effects awards at the Oscars, because "using computers was cheating". The Matrix does a similar thing with the relationship between man and machine but TRON is more on the nose with its computer allegories, thus it's more comprehensible.

The MCP began as a small chess program and will end small, says the Tower Guardian. I love how MCP's functional existence exactly matches its moral narrative, just as the Programs represent the ideals and purpose of their Users. The User-Program dichotomy even extends to religious thought and that communication between the User and a manifestation of their spirit is profound.

I also like that Kevin Flynn is content with just getting his games back and that the story is barely about the MCP trying to take over the world. That's kinda funny, but kinda weird when they took him in the opposite direction in Legacy. Flynn is right that he stumbled onto world-changing concepts, but the story is somehow just less interesting.

TRON is incredibly forward-thinking in its real-life production and in-film themes. It's incredibly tragic Disney doesn't know what to do with it.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
After 20+ years on TV and movies, the Enterprise crew is forced to confront that they are set in a lifestyle and worldview that is no longer conducive to peace.

This movie is a huge lesson about hate not being as it seems. While the conflict presents itself as the Federation vs. Klingons, it turns out there are factions on every side that don't want to see peace between the two.

Metropolis
The society is broken down into a machine-like class system, and like my other favorite scifi and fantasy stories it requires a force beyond what neither the head or hands (as the film describes) can grasp on their own. The society can only work if there is a heart that understands the needs of both.

Also I like it for its various influences on Superman.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Spielberg's story of an imaginary friend framed as a realistically portrayed alien visitor.

I don't think it has a major scifi theme except perhaps that humans can be more foreign than a friendly alien.

...okay enough rambling

Arrival pulled at the heart strings.

So did Elysium...:messenger_crying:

I love Neill Blomkamp's movies including District 9 and I enjoyed Chappie even though it didn't do too hot on Rotten. If I was rich, I'd beg him to take my money.

Honorable mention is Hardcore Henry whenever you need to quench your thirst for gory bloody violence.

I recently watched the old Total Recall and I have to say that I don't think it holds up anymore. All the prosthetic work is still great of course but the actual story is all a bit boring now. The action is also boring to watch these days as well, there is nothing interesting visually with the set pieces.
I totally forgot that his original self was really a bad guy
but even that reveal didn't make things any more interesting.

When I saw this original teaser for Terminator 2., I knew we were in for a good sequel.

Saw the movie opening weekend to a beyond packed theater. When the skull 'crunch' happened in the beginning, it was like a jump scare. This movie advanced surround sound to new heights.

Also when the T1000 was first revealed, lots 'oh my God!' from the audience.

Movie sold a lot of laserdiscs...

I would have to think for a while before I could decide on a top 5. The only two I know would have to be on it are:

Aliens
Blade Runner 2049

You can argue Alien is a better movie in many ways, but in all honesty I don't enjoy horror that much. It's an amazing film, I just never really want to watch it.

Ailen
T2
Blade Runner 2049
The Matrix
Ghost in The Shell
Jurassic Park
Godzilla 1954
Robocop

All are my favs

Sunshine's screenplay was by Alex Garland, who eventually bounced from his regular Danny Boyle team-up (28 Days Later, The Beach, Sunshine) to write+direct Ex Machina and Annihilation himself. He really came into his own once he took the director's helm on his stories. And yeah, I enjoyed Sunshine a bunch until the third act, but it's still a good flick.

I wish more movies had final acts as enchanting as Annihilation. Despite plot holes, that movie grows more on me with distance. Sticks with you.

Re-watched both recently, T2 is a better movie but there's something about T1 that I enjoy more. It feels more desperate, and Arnold's acting is more robotic (in a good way). Only problem is that it kinda gets boring in the last 4th, the motorcycle chase is kinda meh to be honest and the climax with the skeleton is too cheesy now. Though in fairness I don't like the climax of T2 either.
