God of War's graphics aren't great

The first time I entered Alfheim I thought there was something wrong with the graphics loading too slowly or something. I just remember the foliage looking really rough and obsessing whether I should wait for a fix. Turns out everything loaded just fine...

Honestly I was way more impressed with RDR2 graphics which are still blowing my mind almost a year later.

Love how when videos and articles are shown as proof of said graphical achievement the narrative then changes to "doesn't matter if their is a consensus of professionals and gamers saying it's the best or one of the best graphical games in consoles, it still subjective and doesn't prove anything" boy got to love those try hards. You can never please everybody the point is there is a consensus and that's what matters.

Outside of gpu particles, Kratos character model and some sets that look like paintings that came to life, I find Uncharted, Horizon and Spiderman edge it comfortably in the graphics departement.

Good point, pretty much all Sony's games have good destruction and physics, animate very well and holds their framerate......A great looking game is the combination of all these elements.

I think that understates how much work went into that scene. The last time I was that impressed by fake/offline physics or destruction was Bioshock 1. Sadly as fidelity increases games have mostly been static beyond lighting.

Did you get any further into it since? It gets more and more stunning in new locations further in the game. Apart from a few small blemishes it looks insanely good for coming out of a box that had a mid range 250 dollar GPU in 2013.

I'll take what the OP is smoking. In all seriousness I've recently started playing the game and it is a visual feast. Sure there might be some better looking games, but saying the graphics aren't great is a bit hyperbolic. I'd recommend watching digital foundry's take on it.

Seems like you were really upset over the pixelated porn in your videogames being taken out, It comes across a little creepy and kinda desperate if I'm honest.:messenger_neutral:

It definitely looks nice but I don’t think it looks as good as the other Sony flagship exclusives. Uncharted 4, Death Stranding, and Horizon look better to my eyes.

It’s definitely in the next tier though.

Mid to higher tier on Playstation but top tier graphically on other consoles and hulk smashes their best looking games.

Of course art style is subjective but I'm talking about straight graphics, not art style.

I just started it and I really like the game but the graphics aren't living up to what I expected. Lighting isn't great, PBR implementation is very inaccurate and makes steel look like wood, in-game character models bar Kratos aren't the best, low res mountain backgrounds and low res textures throughout. Red Dead Redemption 2 looks a lot better as does Uncharted 4, Forza Horizon 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn.

I'd put God of War alongside ROTTR/SOTTR, Gears 4, Killzone Shadow Fall and Days Gone in games that look good but not GREAT.

And I really liked how it looked and was visually pleased as I played a game that is really great for far many more reasons than graphics alone.

Not sure what else you want me to say. We don't agree, no big deal.

I think the graphics of the new GoW are one of the only areas it actually delivered. The gameplay though and the god awful balancing that turns every enemy into an axe sponge on harder difficulties is really bad. Atreus is also terrible for game play that is basically required to prevent transformations but unreliable because he can be grabbed and knocked down. Such an overrated game. I've never played something that felt like it had a billion dollar budget and zero play testing to make sure it was actually fun to play, but that's the new God of War for you.

Still sold 10 million units.

Yeah you are def wrong, I think you went in with the mindset of 'ok, show me the hype' like it was the second coming of Jesus Christ. As just a video game, it was graphically outstanding, story was very good. Gameplay really fun, the feel of the axe returning will never get old! You focused so much on the negatives that you completely failed to see the positives. The game is not bad, the game is just not for you. You sound salty like you wanted it to fail.

Picked it up at a black Friday deal. Fantastic fucking game, the graphics are stellar in most places thus far.
I avoided it for so long because gow3 I found terribly boring and just hated the character by then, thankfully the reboot has been a lot more fun

Because everything he says is wrong. The game is an absolute masterpiece.

Yep.

One of the best games in the generation to me and I never really cared about gow before him. It was the first God of War that I cared to buy and it was an impulse pre order that it was totally worth it.

I will never understand some people, not liking of something is normal but being incapable of recognize the quality of it, is bizarre.

Games like Forza, God of War and Mario for example are extremely polished that even if you hate them you cannot deny their quality.

For me it's the same as complain about a healthy meal, even if you don't like how it tastes, you cannot deny it's value.

Maybe you can direct me towards the third person action/hack & slash game with good gameplay. My favorite genre by a large margin, and I’ve played them all pretty much from Ninja Gaiden to DMC to Platinum titles, I don’t think any of them nail it quite as well as God of War. Yeah if you want to make an argument about complexity of move sets or balance at higher difficulties I’d be much more understanding, but to tell me the gameplay isn’t fun? Bruh. It has the most impactful and visceral gameplay ever as far as I’m concerned.

We all got tricked, then we validate our choice on forums like this one.

When people who know better come along to tell us we were wrong we pile on them rather than accepting that our ways were wrong and admit that not only the game is boring and unbalanced - it's also f-ugly.

Yeah well, I think the graphics are great. Compared to almost everything ever released, they are great. I don't know what standards one would have to deny that.

I do think the game is a bit overrated though, the Alfheim part was extremely underwhelming and bland, which made out a good portion of the game. I don't know, I just expected more. Some grand moments for sure, but it felt like they maybe held back a little for the sequel or DLC.

Would have liked some even more enormous, mind-blowing bosses and environments but hey, the game is still great.

You see that's the nice thing about SWWS games, you can make a case for all of them as the best looking game ever...………...So you will see some people say UC4/LL, some people will say The Order 1886, some people will say DriveClub, some people will say GTS, some people will say Zero Dawn, Some will say Killzone Shadowfall, Some will say Spiderman, Days Gone, Detroit......Some will make cases for ISS too a launch game like Shadow Fall....

Let's be honest, all of these games are excellent looking games and GOW is one of those, just amazing graphics.......Anyone who says God of War's graphics aren't great is trolling, they're all great looking games, you decide what appeals to you more in one game over the other, but you're basically swimming in oceans of gravy here as far as graphics is concerned...

I liked the game but graphicly it didnt really stand out for me.
Great character models and snow deformation.
But some of locations and textures looked like its from Dreamcast.
Visuals just lacked consistency. And after everyone saying how amazing it is....i honestly expected more.

I think I recant my last statement in this thread. The game looks fantastic on my 65" 4K HDR TV. That being said, I'm finding the gameplay to be incredibly linear and I'm not sure if this changes as I progress. One thing I'm noticing about a lot of PS4 exclusives is that, for the most part, they are very "on rails" when they aren't open world. I dig the story so far, but there are so many invisible walls and the game is feeling like one big hallway.

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Graphics are gaming's biggest enemy and it really has nothing to do with the developer or game, it's just the process of shifting to bigger and better resolutions.

I too, don’t think it looks that great. It’s definitely behind other PS4 exclusives as well as third party games like ACO and RDR2. I don’t like how it plays either truth be told, and the kid is annoying as fuck.

So yea I have lots of problems with the game.

The graphics of this game are insane. Every place, enemy and character is marvelous and detailed. And the art direction is EXQUISITE.

Man, I thought it looked absolutely incredible. One of the most impressive PS4 Pro games I've played, and that's saying a lot.
