Microsoft long term plans is always about network service and game on windows

Wether on your pc...phone...or anything..as long as its doable theyl be perfectly happy with it

Recent policy seems to be heading into that direction and i think thats a fantastic idea

Going 3rd party is not all honey and roses. Specifically, without a Console Microsoft would no longer be able to support Gamepass as it currently stands. Gamepass can survive without a console, but only by losing all the third party games.

If gaming stops offering what you want, you walk away. That's what happens with something that isn't essential to life. Gaming is for pleasure, if you take the fun out of it then we are not going to stick around just to pay game companies money.

Bingo. This explains pretty well why I’m out next gen. To me, modern video games have completely been drained of what I came to enjoy about the hobby for decades. It makes zero sense to keep throwing money at an industry that’s no longer creating a product that you like or prefer. With the end of the generation rapidly approaching, it’s a great time to make a clean break and move to something else.

As far as this thread goes, MS played behind the eight-ball for most of this gen, thanks to self-inflicted wounds that its competition wisely exploited. Things improved as Microsoft retooled its messaging, but it was far too late by then. I could definitely understand if some within MS thought about moving away from consoles after Gen8.5, but leaving Sony alone as the sole power console (Nintendo will never again compete in this way) would not be good; a lack of competition generally isn’t ever good.

As a spectator-only next generation, it’ll be interesting to see if MS can get out of the gates better and how tight (if at all) the race will be to start.

Years ago was the Xbox One the last ms console....why they don't have closed the Xbox division? wasn't doomed?
Money for Scarlet development is already spent. MS need to release Scarlet if only to get the money back. But the next gen is Xbox's last chance. It is clear from MS's own words that they no longer see console boxes as a priority. Xbox will survive as a brand, but the physical console still need to pass the test at launch next year.

Just because Microsoft stop producing videogame console it doesnt mean it the end of all

Theres a big difference between what you perceives..and the real thing...

Nothing will change...a new chalenger like google will enter the scene and a new dawn begins..

If you decided to quit gaming for that sole reason ( because ms stop making xbox)...well..im wishing you good luck on your new hobbies....

As for your second statement...the jury is still out for that one....cos as far as nintendo and pc still exist im sure there wont be any lack of competition around here....

I don’t know many businesses that would shut down a line of revenue because they “lost,” they don’t care about winning or losing as long as they are taking cheque’s to the bank and cashing them.

It’s a small bit of extra income for investors and helping them draw a bigger dividend, so they obviously need to shut it down.

I am not saying VR would defeat streaming, I am saying Streaming Virtual Reality games is physically impossible. If you want to have game streaming being the niche then it is fine, but you will never be able to replacing all gaming for as long as Virtual Reality lives.

VR is the most obvious way to show the weakness of streaming. And also to knock back on all the technologically illiterate people who insist that game streaming can defeat laws of physics. You can spend a million times more money building a nitrogen cooled quantum super computer in a server, you would still not be able to stream virtual reality.

D DeltaPolarBear , You may be right. I really don't know very much about VR, so if you say that it's going to be the Achilles heel for cloud streaming then I'll just have to wait and see.

I know that in order for it to be properly adopted by gamers it needs to less cost prohibitive, have FULL games with simple sit down experiences and have some MAJOR franchises (like Half -Life) behind it. The most important deterrent is bandwidth. I'm told VR would be very unplayable without fast, stable connections. But that's just as important streaming games as well.

Again, Hybrid Consles? Might be the middle ground.

Back then, Xbox was only created to "dominate the living room". That failed when the living room stopped being the centre of the house. People barely even watch TV these days like they used to. There was never the intention of selling game consoles for the gaming aspect.

Now, of course, the people who are currently in the Xbox division do want to keep their jobs, so they are trying multiple ways to keep their positions relevant. The fact is even though it is possible for Microsoft to gain market share over Playstation next gen, it is an uphill battle. Right now their tagline is "gamepass", "going into PC gaming" and "Xcloud". I do wish them luck. But they are only doing this because they are getting lifeboats ready.

Why lifeboats? Because designing game consoles is expensive. And the launch of Scarlet would determine if Xbox would get the go-ahead to start designing the next-next-box. If Scarlet doesn't at least grow within projected sales, then there is a real possibility that Scarlet is not going to have a successor.

And if Microsoft Is not in war with PlayStation and they look only at their revenues? If they earn Money why stop making console?

And you don't have really answered.... wasn't supposed to be the One the last console over the gaming forums/social threads?

What happen if After Scarlett they build another one? Is Always the last...but Is unstoppable and there's no clues about closing the Xbox division...

This literally happens at the start of EVERY GENERATION since Xbox was first introduced at gaming platform.

Xbox is doomed, Xbox is dreamcasted, Xbox is finished, Xbox Division is being sold...........And heeeeeeeeeere we go again . Another Xbox console arriving in 2020.

The goal posts keep moving, the narratives continue.

The bespoke fixed platform nature of a home console is anathema to Microsoft's wider cloud-powered vision of the future. Therefore, it's not surprising to hear that they had doubts over doing another console.

Any division that under-perform and can't justify its existance is always at risk of being cut. In the case of Xbox, it wouldn't be cut because part if it makes money. But the cost of designing and producing physical consoles would be hard to justify if you don't reach sales targets.
I am not saying this out of nowhere; Microsoft themselves are the ones downplaying the importance of the console hardware. Yes, i know, it is strange to do that AND launch Scarlet, but them's the facts. MS is splitting its attention between the hardware and gamepass/PC/Minecraft.
It is crazy to know that the first year of Scarlet's life wouldn't have 1st party exclusives.

Then you're not going to like the future because streaming IS most definitely going to be a major part of gaming.

And let's clear about something. Neither Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo will survive the future if they don't embrace streaming. The console demographic is not growing. ALL of the growth in gaming is happening in the mobile space.

This is what concerns me the most about the future of consoles. I mean it's such a cheap, mean and obstinate demographic that doesn't want anything to change. Who is going to bet their financial future on us? Especially when our numbers aren't going anywhere?

Consoles is a decades old business model that's being passed by everybody. We're the only ones still using discs while all other entertainment mediums have moved on.

As long as I have the option to download at home, and stream on the go I'll be satisfied.

Sony and Nintendo have all of the valuable IP's and talent, why would people suddenly stop buying their stuff if they don't go streaming? Your argument makes no sense.

'passed by', do you consider all change good? Or do you just apply zero rigor to your thought process?

Stadia is already a failure, all streaming is going to fail because the quality is just not there... it must be compressed and therefor the image will never truly reach quality above 720p. (Which is what PSNow and Xcloud aim for)
HDR doesn't work properly this way either. and lag is always going to be a huge factor as well as drops in service.

Console gaming is a juicy steak with a beer, streaming games is eating out of the garbage....
I won't pay a penny towards streaming.

Once companies realize they have undercut themselves and pissed off their most valuable customers... it will be too late and the industry will have a collapse, much like '83.

It’s them getting out in front by controlling the message, planting the seeds of Xbox shifting more service(s) based like 95% of the company is now.

It’s a long game, the same long game they played with their Office suite, Adobe did this as well.

Gaming of all markets they can’t just go all in cold turkey, we are fickle bunch and we will drop it quicker than you can blink. Ease your fan base into it over time.

It took how many years for them to accept EA access? And they aren’t even a direct rival. I posted a recent article saying Microsoft has no more current plans to offer their exclusives on other platforms. That of course probably doesn’t count XCloud, which once again I’ll point to HOW long it took Sony to accept a non rival to have their subscription service on their platform and you think it’s set in stone with Microsoft?

You can keep telling yourself that Xbox first party and third party exclusives games are coming to the PS4/PS5 though, maybe Sony will embrace XCloud and Gamepass too, but history says they won’t. EA access is one thing but XCloud which would more than likely include Gamepass, They wouldn’t want that to cannibalize their own sales with PSNow, and market space, even with their share of profits.

Doesn't matter how many years bud, it still happened. The point stands. It happened. "but history says they won’t" Yet your own post states "years for them to accept" yet they accepted EA access none the less bud, stop trying to bicker cause you can't really answer how that can be running with a narrative that the company will say no forever or something.

The best you have is "how many years" Its irrelevant. The point is simply that it happened and could happen again.

"They wouldn’t want that to cannibalize their own sales with PSNow" Yet they accepted EA Access..... Looks like that argument is on quicksand bud.

"You can keep telling yourself that Xbox first party and third party exclusives games are coming to the PS4/PS5 though" Yet, you could have said this about PC and would have been wrong, Switch and would have been wrong, PS4 and you are still wrong. Sorry but it happened. I don't get this weird denial when the companies own damn actions support them putting things on other platforms, I mean they even legit stated they intend to put games on ALL DEVICES!

So indeed they are coming bud as in facts

Soooooooo maybe you didn't realize that MS was already putting games on PS4.

Maybe you didn't realize MS was putting games on Switch too...

Maybe you didn't realize Ori came to Switch and MS published it themselves...

Do you guys seriously not get tired of saying something won't happen only for MS to correct you by doing the very thing you are saying is not going to happen?

So we can forget MS putting games on Playstation or Nintendo systems, even though MS is putting games on Playstation and Nintendo systems and made a clear statement about seeking to put games on all devices?

So they won't do that, even though they are currently doing that unless all those links are lies and Minecraft dungeons isn't coming to Switch or PS4 and Ori didn't release on Switch and you the only one that is correct about this... That is a lot of reality and facts and logic to ignore my friend, like TONS!

Its literally the company doing the thing you just stated won't happen and then them saying they want to do that on ALL DEVICES, yet you are trying to tell us this with zero facts, zero base that it won't happen even against the actions and statements of the very company doing it.

That is just a strange, strange form of denial man.

Minecraft? Really? It’s a no brainer to put anything Minecraft related in multiple platforms, I thought we all agree that Minecraft is a special occasion because it literally prints money for Microsoft. That isn’t news and Ori being in the Switch isn’t really comparable(and it’s very old news) since it’s not even first party game. Why isn’t Ori or even Cuphead just on Xbox and Switch? Why not PS4? Lol

Bro don’t get your hopes up if you’re expecting Halo or Forza on the PS5.

Ohhh funny, where have I heard that before?

I remember folks even saying that the games on PC would be smaller, that you wouldn't see stuff like Forza or Halo or Gears.

When we saw Forza, the new excuse was "oh its a late port, you won't see it day and date and you see stuff like Halo and Gears"

Gears 5 comes to PC day and date...

Its hard to take anyone seriously based on the company doing this. You are giving limitations to a company open to putting content on many devices that states its ambitions pretty clearly. So prepare yourself for some flip flopping bud, don't make the same mistake past fans made with such strange assumptions that it won't happen.

We've heard that funny joke for YEARS now bud.

I don’t think MS is going to put Halo or Forza on PS5. Why, because their goal isn’t to sell copies of Halo and Forza, it is to get people subscribed to GamePass. That is their priority. It's not to sell Xbox consoles - Scarlett exists to push GamePass not the other way around. Halo exists to sell GamePass, not to sell Halo or sell Scarletts. Etc. Everything they do on gaming should be viewed in this context.

You are free to think that, but MS themselves seem to disagree.

"Our focus is on bringing console quality games that you see on TV or PC to any device. I want to see the creators that I have relationships with reach all two billion people who play games, and not have to turn their studio into something that makes match-3 games rather than story-driven single player games. Because that’s the only way to reach a bigger platform. That is our goal: to bring high-quality games to every device possible on the planet.”

Thats some nice rhetoric but if it was literal they would be launching MCC on PS4 today, no?

Eventually they want their streaming service on everything -sure that’s part of it, but from what I see it is obvious their position is to push GamePass. They cant push GamePass on Sony devices. I really doubt they care about $60 game sales anymore even, again it’s all about GP.

Not "rhetoric" bud, its straight from MS themselves. To argue against it, is to literally go against the very company you are trying to claim will or won't do something. So MS is wrong and you are right? smh

MCC doesn't need to come on PS4 today for them to seek to put titles on all devices in the future weather that be from Gamepass or not.

"They cant push GamePass on Sony devices" Just like EA couldn't with Access yet....here we are with EA Access on PS4.... So you don't know that they "can't", you simply doubt it will happen even with the companies own words very much seeking to be on all devices. At some point, it might not matter to either company to use each others services. Sony uses MS own servers or will in the future, Sony allowed EA Access on PS4. With MS's hardware selling less and less, it might make sense to put that on Playstation and Nintendo and Sony nor Nintendo might actually really care as they are not losing much by allowing that software to exist on their platforms.

Sony keeps their hardware base intact, MS sells software or a service like Gamepass.

Think about it like this, did Sony not allow EA Access? Did Sony not allow Minecraft Dungeons? Sooooo doesn't really support that little narrative of yours does it?

Gamepass on Sony would have no third party games, and Sony would demand 30% of the sales just like any other console platform. You can't assume that it would still be "gamepass" if it changes that much. EA Access is only on Playstation because it only has EA games. What would Gamepass look like if it only has Microsoft games?

Thats a good question and only time will tell. Who knows how MS will have it set up on other devices, clearly some devices that don't support certain titles would be omitted. Let the specifics of that be up to MS. I can see it happening seeing how they are pretty clear about what they want in the future. I though assuming they won't do this or that. Their own history has shown they are open to this and for years I've stated stuff like "Oh on PC, but probably not steam" or "oh on PC but likely never Mac" or "Nintendo" or "Playstation" and its all been wrong.

So I'm playing it safe and assuming they will put it on anything in the future, how is a completely different story. I don't honestly think any argument about them "not" doing something has ever really held up. Over time it turns into sort of a joke lol ie Remember that time folks thought MS would NEVER going to put their games on Steam? Nintendo? PlayStation? etc Its all happened and I have run out of faith that they have any interest in withholding content for something. Evidence historically of that argument not holding up is just embarrassing at this point.

LOL calm down dude. There once was actually a time when MS did not put their games on PC, let alone Steam. That was their strategy then, it's not fair to ding people who a while back would have said they would not put their games on PC, because they didn't and had no plans to. Their plans changed, so it's time to re-assess.

If MS wants to port Halo to PS5 Sony will let them no doubt, like they would any third party. Minecraft Dungeons is from Sony's POV just another third party game, like Halo would be. Now, let's say Sony allows it, I don't think they would port it without a service like GamePass, because that's what they obviously care about. So let's think this one through.

EA Access on PS4 and Xbox provides access to one thing, EA games. GamePass offers games across the third party lineup. No, I feel pretty confident that Sony will not allow a GamePass that has a bunch of third party PS5 games, undercutting Sony's management of their platform. I really do not think that would happen. Now, would they allow a MS-specific GamePass that only has MS games on it? Probably, although I don't know what MS could reasonably charge for that service because PC Game Pass is all of $5 and has dozens of games on it in addition to MS titles.

So prepare yourself for some flip flopping bud, don't make the same mistake past fans made with such strange assumptions that it won't happen.

We've heard that funny joke for YEARS now bud.

We can agree to disagree, I’ll agree with you once I see a first party title not named Minecraft on Nintendo or Sony console and I never doubted Halo/Forza/Gears on PC, I’m actually for that. I like what they are doing with their play anywhere system.

Yep, I certainly see it possible for MS games to be on Sony hardware. I merely point out that the economics of Gamepass would change. The value proposition of Gamepass is determined by the titles you have access to, and losing third party titles would be pretty major.

Xb1 massively declined from the 360. I'm confident the next box will continue the decline. They are going full guns blazing on pc, subscriptions and streaming. Their hardware sales will suffer.

All anyone needs to do is look at what MS is doing with their surface hardware to understand how they will handle console. Yes they will continue to create hardware for console gaming but it will be premium. They will also lean to PC as an addition to their hardware platforms as well. This is playing to their strengths not cornering their success solely on how well their box sells.

That’s not how it works?

PS3 was a massive decline from PS2 so Sony should have gotten out while the getting was good?

While I don’t have a crystal ball. I expect to see declines in the PS5 vs the PS4. So is next gen the last for Sony also?

Sony messed up their PS3 launch and struggled during the first half of the gen, byt got their shit together and ended up outselling the 360.
And with their first party output raising the bar with almost every single release, they had momentum going into current-gen.

There are obsolutely no signs of Sony having their heads up their asses and doing another PS3 going into next-gen.

Not fucking up is only one of the of the prerequisites to being successful. There are other factors that can contribute to the success or failure of a product.

Even if Sony does everything perfect, they are most likely going to see a decline from this gen.

Sure, but don't forget that Sony has the top 3 of alltime consoles (4 out of 5 even), they know how to handle the modern console market better than anyone.
That's actually proven.

I highly doubt that it's gonna be a toe-to-toe competition like last gen.
Especially if MS is gonna do tiered launches again, as well as two versions after all.

None of this makes any difference to me. I’m just trying to figure out what the baseline is for when a manufacturer needs to (or is going to) get out of the business.

Sure, just like there was once a time where they didn't put games on Nintendo and Sony platforms...they are simply continue that progression into other platforms. Kinda the point being made.

it's not fair to ding people who a while back would have said they would not put their games on PC,

Not trying to "ding" anyone, simply pointing out how tired out and old that argument has become in light of what they've been doing, the ponit is simply that the argument gets more and more funny as time goes on, its just not a stable arguing point when the very company is telling folks they themselves intend to have games on ALL DEVICES, it becomes pointless and sorta funny when one side is saying something and the very company is saying something completely different. So this isn't even in defense of MS, as MS themselves don't even agree to that strange argument considering their statements.

Their plans changed,

Oh they change plans often, as to why I'm not sure why anyone would be wasting any energy thinking they will go back to only putting games on 1 platform or not putting games on certain devices etc.

No, I feel pretty confident that Sony will not allow a GamePass that has a bunch of third party PS5 games, undercutting Sony's management of their platform.

Yet EA Access exist all while EAs games are still on PSN.

So who knows what Sony will allow or not or even if Gamepass on Nintendo or Sony platforms will even have 3rd party games.

Remains to be seen.

You are more so arguing about HOW specifically it will be in the future when done, not the concept of what MS is doing...

would they allow a MS-specific GamePass that only has MS games on it? Probably

Thats how I think it might be, but its all simply speculation.
