Doom Eternal - March 20!

Honestly, after the last story trailer, the less I see about the game the better (and I mean that in a positive light). The game looks so dope, so bad-ass and totally unhinged, that even the delay doesn't bother me since I am certain that ID will deliver the goods.

Somethign really icky about all the candy colors being thrown around... I'm worried DOOM Eternal is TOO flashy and tongue in cheek.

When you play it, it makes sense. I know it can look pretty bizarre seeing multiple colored icons flying out of enemies. But each color represents a different pick-up, and it makes them easy to spot in the midst of all the chaos.

I played it at Quakecon, and honestly if you loved 2016 you'll love this. That's the best way to describe it. It's 2016, with new things, so what's not to love IMO?

I'm just really eager to see how the story plays out. Can't wait.

I almost feel like rumble feedback makes this game better. It feels good, but sometimes it feels very lightweight. Like I can see the satisfaction in front of my face, but I don't necessarily feel like I'm doing the leg work. I'm looking forward to Eternal, had it pre-ordered for a while now. I'm curious to see what their DLC packages are. Doom 2016 gave them out in a free update later on and honestly I didn't really notice it. Just a new GUI.

"We couldnt finish it in the time we expected, so we are delaying it."

I'm getting tired of all the buzzwords that always gets around that.

Yep, I really don't like the new direction they went after the perfect 2016 version. But the customizable HUD sounds good, maybe there's hope.

I'm fine with the whole badass DoomSlayer thing but what made Doom for me was also being scared, the dark rooms, hearing monsters breathing heavily somewhere and sense of mystery. Doom 2016 had some exploration but it still felt like all the cool tombs and hell shrines are there just for DoomSlayer to blast through. Original Doom games made me, the player, feel small but now it's other way around.

Yeah, it could definitely do with more creepiness, like the original, though I think I like the 2016 iteration just as much (or almost) as the original game. However, I don't really like what I saw from Eternal. And besides the new direction that I don't really like I also expected more, especially if it's coming 4 years after the previous one, like glory kills with weapons, dual wield, new weapons, etc... What I saw seems like a cool expansion but not a full-blown sequel.

I'm genuinely curious as to what you would prefer to see to make it a "full-blown sequel". Typically a sequel contains a lot of the same, but builds off of that to make it bigger and better. I personally feel like that's what they're doing here, especially after playing it. Also, this isn't me trying to sass or anything, just honestly curious.

I think my biggest gripe I have with Eternal right now is the fact that they removed Multiplayer and replaced it with some asymmetrical nonsense. I'm sure it's fun, or whatever, but it's not deathmatch. I was REALLY hoping they would've taken 2016's multiplayer and just improved it across the board in-house.

Removing it completely just feels bizarre to me. Especially as DOOM was the creator of deathmatch. In before the "HURR DURR BOOMER SCARED OF CHANGE" nonsense, that's not the case at all. I think it would've been really cool to have had the campaign, the multiplayer, and Battlemode as a new mode.

I provided examples in my post what I would expect from a real sequel, you weren't paying attention it seems.

I perfectly agree with what you said about Deathmatch though. I very rarely play MP games but I really enjoyed the MP of Doom 2016.

Wow, no reason to get sassy, it was a legit question. Also, yes, I'm well aware as you mentioned "glory kills with weapons, dual wield, new weapons, etc".

Those are present in Eternal to a certain degree. Especially new weapons, abilities, power-ups, etc. Dual wielding? Nah. Also Glory Kills with weapons? There appear to be some that they've shown.

From my understanding, and in my opinion, it feels like a "full-blown sequel", so I asked as I thought I missed something.

Again, it was me asking a legit question and not being a dick, lmao.

Mate, do you have a bad day or something? I wasn't being offensive or anything, I'm not sure why you feel offended :)
I just didn't understand why are you asking it when I provided legit examples. I undestand these things don't matter to you but to me it do and would make it seem more like a sequel instead of an expansion pack. BTW, can you show me video about weapon glory kills? And by weapon glory kills I don't mean the blades and flamethrower on Doomslayer's suit.

Doom 2016 was mostly all about popping elements all around so I don't know what the fuck you're worried about mate

I don't follow your reasoning. Take Doom - Doom II and give me a honest breakdown of the major differences outside of the super shotgun, introduction of jump and some new enemies

Eternal straight up changes completely the pace / disposition of the levels (its straight up a platformer now), is twice as aerial, is faster, has more combat systems and one in particular COMPLETELY change the game lol, new enemies, new weapons and even a completely different multiplayer experience. Expansion you say ? huh

edit : i forgot the engine overhaul

Major differences between Doom and Doom II? Next to nothing (no jumping either). I don't really like Doom II either for this reason. Also the maps suck a lot IMO compared to the awesome maps in the first game.
Also "Expansion" might be a bit rude, I just want to express by it that this doesn't feel like a real sequel that was being developed for 4 years.

I mean when we pretty much know that its Heaven wanting to see everybody dead, especially humans for having tapped into Hell's energy which kinda introduce a notion of otherworldly war at all levels rather than "uh oh the UAC fucked up again bois we back in hell !", body degradation / dismemberement on all enemies which actually is very important since it will disable some of their attacks (and making the game twice as violent), new units, new weapons, an almost metroidvania aspect in level design (we all saw that Mario like footage right ?) ... yeah I don't know. And that chain on the double shotgun enabling Doom guy to anchor himself on enemies in order to traverse arenas rather than having to use a jumping pad ?

And yeah that super weird multiplayer ?

Eternal is doing something completely new in Doom's universe on more than one level, granted, it still use the same engine / "presentation" so I can see why you don't feel like its a real sequel

Haha, I suppose I read the "you're not paying attention" as more sassy than I meant to. My apologies! Offended, no, I just misread and misunderstood, haha. So my bad! Probably doesn't help that I read and respond while working, haha.

Ah, I may have been thinking of the ones involving those.

Honestly, I'm probably pretty biased as well. I just want more DOOM regardless, haha. Of course I'll always want more and bigger than anything else. But even if there were minor changes I'd still be all in, lmao.

No worries! I want more Doom too since it's my all-time favorite (though I think this is not surprising with my avatar) and perhaps that's the reason I'm a bit more critical. I'm glad there will be a sequel and I'm sure it will be awesome, it's just that I wanted and expected more. But whatever, hopefully it will be a huge success and we will get a nextgen only game that will will blow us all away.

I TOTALLY get that. A part of me is slightly curious and concerned because I feel like around this time before 2016 came out, we knew a lot more about the content in the game. However with Eternal, we know there's a campaign and Battlemode... That's it. I'm hoping there's more as well. Well, and honestly, I still really wish multiplayer/deathmatch was present. :(

I know they said they were going to drop a ton of details and info next month, so I guess we have that to look forward to. Just wondering when that will be... :pie_thinking:

drotahorror drotahorror , yeah, sorry about that edit man. I realized I may have just gotten confused with the shoulder cannon and wrist blade. I SWORE I saw some with other weapons, but I may be mixed up. :(

Honestly, I don't really need more info. Before Doom 2016 came I was insanely hyped, I was waiting for that game since 2007, when they first talked about having Doom 4 in development, so I was constanly on the lookout for news, I remember the first reveal was only for Quake-Con attendees and they could only write about it but not show it and it sounded insanely awesome and when I saw the presentation next year during E3 I was utterly blown away, it looked unbelievable, I was expecting downgrades but id delivered (they are among the top developers, and have always been) and I can't count how many times I played through the game (which I think I only did in my childhood and with the original Doom). Then since finishing the game I was waiting for the "Hell on Earth" sequel. Seeing Eternal's reveal gameplay and a couple of other ones was enough, since now I know what we will be getting. I just feel like this game should have come out in like 2018 and I wouldn't have a bad word at all, but in 2020 it just feels too little too late, and I would like the things mentioned earlier, though I will play the shit out of it anyway. :)
I think I'll skip any gameplay from now on, maybe they will surprise me in the end.

I think this sounds like a symptom of flash over substance. The issue with showing Doom off in any capacity now that we have all played it and know that watching it doesn't do the game justice. But in the case of Eternal it's building off of a groundwork that was already so good it's very hard to see how it could get better. So every trailer sort of looks like it's just more of the same but brighter, more gory, etc.

I firmly believe, and as someone who's played Eternal, that once you get your hands on it you'll see that the platforming and new addition like the flame thrower are enough to get you excited to just keep playing Doom.

I get what you mean and even agree but I will still miss those things I mentioned earlier. Maybe in the next game.

Aw, phew. I was afraid when I saw this topic that news might have dropped the game is delayed again. I'm glad we're still on schedule*
