Carrie to become a TV show and be played by a Trans or Black actress

Did you see the 2013 movie? It was abysmal as was the remake of Pet Semetary.

The only decent Stephen King remake films were It and It 2.
And why do you think this would be any better? I'm sure it'll be on the same level as the Carrie tv movie or Carrie 2.

I actually didn't mind the remake for Pet Semetary. It has a ton of issues, and the ending is depressing (you could also say the theme of "destruction of the nuclear family" is some sneaky Marxist propaganda), but it was at least chilling.

If you want to talk really bad horror remakes that miss the point of the originals, look no further than the Chucky remake.

Thank you gaf for being yet again a positive in my life. In just a few seconds with this one simple and short thread I was saved a lot of my personal time and energy that would have been otherwise wasted on giving this a try.

I'm taking a wild guess: all the people being mean to Carrie will be whiter than snow.

There might be one black chick who is mean to her but she will be a light skinned black and she will have the same personality as the white kids. If it's a dude he will be black as fuck and be the football jock boyfriend of one of the white girls. But there will only be one, if there is one.

To me the defining characteristic of Carrie is the religious fundamentalism of the mother being forced on the child, to the detriment of her personal growth and her peer interactions. So it would make sense to me to cast her as a muslim trying to break free, black person under the thumb of a fundamental Christian mother, etc. The race isn't important so much as the religious extremism organic to the race that is chosen. Carrie being transgender would fit as well, since pretty much everyone dogs them, but it seems like too easy a target if you ask me. Plus there is a trigger of her menstruation, so a transwoman character is gonna have to get around that somehow.

Anyway, the entire story has been done to death at this point, and basically done IN REAL LIFE with countless bullied kids shooting up their schools, so I'm a bit over the story myself.

Now Christine, THERE is a story desperate for a Fast and Furious remake!!!!

I haven't read through this thread but my 2 cents.
I don't care if they cast a black female lead but a big no with the trans hiring. That's just weird.

No because it’s pandering to a cause that is already overblown as it is.
In my opinion, that's a slippery slope. The goal is not to avoid pandering, because doing so is "making a statement." It's purely reactionary.

If the character can be of any background, then let it be. The creatives can do their thing. In a vacuum, their choice(s) wouldn't matter since Stephen King himself left room for interpretation.

Demands that the character be changed to one that's in an "underrepresented" demographic AND demands that the character stay the same as in previous media BOTH go against the idea of creative freedom.

How does it feel to know that everybody just assumes that the only qualification you have for your job is the color of your skin? It would eat me alive.

They don't care because they just want a job. This is why there is this "diversity shakedown" going on across all sorts of media. If every animated POC MUST be voiced by a POC from the same ethnic background then the VO actor field will explode (so long as they simultaneously force creators to add a wide range of diverse characters as well). If a LGBTQ++++ character MUST be included in every cast of every show, then those few actors out there that qualify will be in wide demand. SUCCESS!!! Inflate your visibility beyond your demographic percentage and you ensure steady work for yourself independent of your actual talent and ambition. Why create your own shows from your viewpoint, which may or may not succeed, when you can just muscle your way into established media and extort it? A much higher probability of getting a paycheck that way I guess.

It's not the fact that the new Carrie will be played by a black or trans girl, it's the fact it has to be stated... Who cares? And why set those parameters? Why not get the best girls for the role instead of saying they HAVE to be either this or that?

You've said it yourself, there's not much more they can do with it now so let's just leave that alone as it is and try something entirely new with whatever they want as characters.

No, he said there isn't much more that can be done with the established material. Having the main character be a poc or transgendered would obviously open a massive door of storytelling possibilities.

No it absolutely wouldn't since the sexual preferences of a person or the skin color doesn't mean anything. It only means something for people who actually want to shove this in people's throats and think they're being inclusive just because they casted a POC or non heterosexual in a TV show or movie. It means shit.

And no, there isn't much more that can be done with it at all. Let them create something new, this has been overdone already

Have you ever read the book? Or at the very least seen the movie? Carrie's telekinetic powers weren't brought on by her mother's religious upbringing, or by her constant tormenting from her peers. In the previous established works the how and why of her powers were left intentionally vague. The details weren't important to the story being told. What is known is that having her first menstruation appears to "awaken" the dormant powers she has had since being a child. The nasty shit happening to her eventually making her snap and those once dormant powers are brought to the forefront and we all know what happens.

Other than the menstruation bit (which there could be any other number of catalysts written in its place) the story is completely open to any other types of interpretation. The core of the story is the isolation, abuse and misunderstanding of the central character. Which, once again, could easily be grafted onto the experiences poc face, or someone who is transgendered. Or any other number of similar scenarios.

You'd have to be acting purposely obtuse to not see how there could be a different take on the story. Honestly, it is quite cringey and pathetic to see so many people get immediately bent out of shape the moment they hear "poc" or "trans". You just end up coming across as someone who is incredibly close minded over something so frivolous as a movie.

Because the little secret that Hollywood doesn’t want you to realise is that “best person for the role” doesn’t really apply to acting because the skill level isn’t readily discernible to most people no matter how much they pump themselves up with awards shows to convince you they’re important.

Since you’re so familiar with the source material, please explain to me how they will do the first period scene with a trans actor.

How she gets to that point would be absolutely nothing new, all of the points in the stories can be applied to any person.

There would be absolutely nothing new in changing how the new character would get to that breaking point.

It's been overdone, you don't agree fine, then feel free to watch it. I'll watch a new series or movie instead

I mean, I already explained it in my previous message. The first menstruation was the catalyst in the previous movies and book and made sense in that thematic atmosphere. But that doesn't mean it is the end all of catalysts. Obviously if the new movie involves a trans person something new would have to devised but hinging an entire argument of "this shouldn't exist because how is a transwoman going to menstruate?!" is kind of silly don't you think?

So you want to change the source material to appease the identity crowd?

The reason people are skeptical of this is because they announced the identity before anything else. It’s a dead giveaway to where their priorities lie.

At what point is this diversity ship of theseus going to stop being Carrie and become something else entirelly? Take away her gender, her catalyst, her upbringing, and her specific neuroses and it isnt "Carrie" but rather "Donnie" with the only points in common being superpowers and an ending massacre.

I'm down for that but why call it Carrie other than some attempt to bait and switch viewers based on IP name recognition?

There are legions of Shakespeare riffs with very little changed or virtually nothing kept and no one is really complaining in the long run, so long as the product is good. But IMHO saying "Its CARRIE but with a black transgender character!" does not inspire confidence or interest because it is not about the character but about checking a box.

Because there's no better way to be inclusive than by having a trans person commit a school massacre. I'm sure this is the representation they've always been looking for...
