I kind of like the stargate/jump concept. I honestly don't expect this game to ever be finished. I am just going to enjoy it for what it is NOW and whatever future updates come along down the road.

Make fun of the game all you want but all those nay-sayers and people who were shouting "SCAM" are slowly but surely beginning to eat their crows.
Still looks like an excuse to have expensive actors playing out cutscenes that we players of Wing Commander used to put up with because it was surrounding a cool game, while CR was always more interested in making movies it seems.

it just feels like another tease without a release date :(

I think the whole point is that there is no release date, I don't think this game will ever get "released".
They are going to continue patching and adding features as long as there is people interested in playing it.

The whole concept of releasing a game made sense way back when things were physical, but it ain't the 20th century anymore.
You will have to choose when or if you want to board the train.

For big games like this, i don't think it make sense anymore to go to feature complete before asking the players if they are interested or not.
That's what they are doing with every patch, they are asking, are you interested ?

If that answer is NO, then wait a little bit longer, that's fine.

I think what we are seeing with Star citizen , like it or not, is a new way of making AAA games.

As long as people are interested in playing it? What RSI needs are people who are perpetually interested in financing it.

the problem is this game will eventually become outdated. it's hard to imagine right now, but no game has ever stayed current forever. if there is no release date it's window of opportunity will just slip right by.

It's bizarre because right now that the game is finally starting to come along the smugness of the critics is increasing in intensity and fierceness instead of giving it a break.

Also, there's absolutely no form of "pay to win" in the game at all. The advantage of getting better ships seems to be vastly overstated. And if anything, at least in the current form and unless some drastic change happens, this is shaping up to be basically the only "MMO" in existence where you can jump in with a freshly created account and contribute exactly to every single activity open to a veteran.
The cost of ships is a different topic altogether. People are in fact paying a lot of money to get extra ships, which I find questionable at best, but if anything they seem the ones perfectly willing to throw away unhealthy sums to get very little in return.
What's even more strange, many of them genuinely get angry when a certain timeframe go without a new ship released for them to buy.

Me? I just jumped in in October with a basic entry level pack and I never found myself needing for much more than that. (but of course, I have set as a goal to buy some better ship IN-GAME over time).

So what's the point of spending your kid's inheritance on a virtual fleet if it provides no advantages?

As of now, when the game is still barebones, it makes sense that the advantages aren't there, but as more features and more ships get implemented? I'm not convinced that the in-game economy isn't going to be totally fucked.

Forget the absurdity of a trailer to sell a ship in a game that is not even a game yet, but I think this is done really well and shows what might be possible if this ever gets released in our lifetime.

There are people out there who are very invested in hating Star Citizen. The more it proves its value, the more they panic and ramp up the level of misinformation, lies, personal attacks on developers, and general asshattery. By now they pretty much know they're gonna have to eat tons of crow fillet, and they're in an absolute frenzy.

It's funny as hell that if you google "Star Citizen Hater" the Twitter account of Derek Smart comes up as second result. The moment a failure of a game developer who has made only terrible games and hasn't made anything notable in over 20 years becomes more known for attacking this game than for the games he has made, you know the abysmal level of the crowd hating on Star Citizen.

This is the average level of the comments I see from some when I write an article about the game.

They must lead a very, very sad life. Honestly, I pity them.

People like to support the development of a game they want. That's a pretty big point.

I’m sure it will be coming next year with more donations needed, will be the same line of sentence every year for this game.

If the industry as a whole managed game development the way CIG does it would crash and burn within a matter of months.

That's true, i was more referencing the fact that they are doing what's called early access on indie title.
I think that's the first time we've seen it on what can be called AAA quality.

Yes i'm aware that they are burning cash faster than the Joker in the Dark Knight.

the problem is this game will eventually become outdated. it's hard to imagine right now, but no game has ever stayed current forever. if there is no release date it's window of opportunity will just slip right by.

They have done that a couple of time already (you can see the evolution on youtube), but yeah, every graphic generation you have to redo all the asset, it gets more and more expensive to keep the game up to date. I think what's dating them will be their game design, oddly enough.

I like the concept of manually flying through the jump gates but they should be able to be auto piloted once you’ve manually done them once.

I’m not sure what the penalty is if you hit one of those wormhole pillars but sci-fi lore says it’s universally bad.

They can amp up the difficulty and make non-auto pilotable routes in fringe areas or new systems.

1- Why are you asking it to me when I paid just 40 bucks for the game?
2- Spergs think they are going to be the next Captain Kirk when in reality they'll just hang around spaceports for bragging rights on big ass multi-crew ships they will ineffectively drive around alone.

I think they said the finished game should be able to fit on a regular sad with like 100gb space. Don't quote me on that though. Right now it is 50gb
I was making a joke obviously, but in my mind the game seems so ambitious, and so long in development that I am somewhat surprised. Thanks for the reply!!!

Can someone point me in the direction of how to get into this game and how much it costs. Just to get started. What are the options? Can I fly around and do missions yet or are we still not ready. Im out of the loop.

Atm, you can freefly the game and test all ships: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/fly-now. You can do missions, mining, cargo, fps, dog fighting, exploring planets and moons, caves etc etc.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Any updates on Squadron 42? That's mainly what I want out of this. More Wing Commander than Privateer/Elite online :)

Not as of yet. Probably during the holiday stream. Ciitizencon is usually for PU stuff.

They said SQ42 should be going into beta end of next year so I guess they are making slow progress.

Rumours I heard during CitizenCon in Manchester, is that CIG has booked many hotel rooms for next year's GamesCom. So it could very well be that we get a big SQ42 media blowout at GamesCom.

It's around the time the beta has to appear.

There has never been a game I understood less about that I was also interested in.

I want a modern Wing Commander game and I have no idea if this that or something else.

When it comes to consoles(I know) I'll figure it out.

Squadron 42 is modern Wing Commander (relatively linear narrative driven action space opera with player protagonist), Star Citizen is modern Privateer MMORPG (open universe sandbox make your own fortune as one or many a la Elite Dangerous with breadth as well as depth like Eve Online). It's not rocket science...

It's as simple as that, both use the same underlying technology and systems, what features one or the other has like on-foot segments/fps mechanics/mining/building/player economies/whatever, those simple words above are their core values (or rather the intent, we'll see what materializes beyond the tech demos)...

'What' and 'If' are hard sells for me personally.

Will buy the game if it ever gets finished though.

If this is how long it takes to come out with a video game this ambitious (no release date in the horizon), I'll pass.
