The Witcher (Netflix)

He's not a good writer.

He had some luck and a few really great intuitions and ideas. But he's a poor storyteller.

CDPR took a rough diamond and polished it.
Then netflix threw it in the mud.

You really disliked the show that much, eh? Besides the pacing issues and some gripes in the early episodes, I thought it was a solid showing.

Not like that they needed to look far too. Many fans think that Emma Appleton, who played Renfri, should have played Triss.

Renfri was very pretty.

I have no idea why they chose the current actor for Triss. She did a good job, got nothing against her, it's just she looks nothing like Triss lol. At least use makeup/wigs/contacts like they did with Geralt.

So if you are not familiar with the source material the time jumps are really gonna fuck with you. I know the source material somewhat and I was confused before I realized what they were doing.

Well this explains your utter disdain for the show throughout this thread, Fuz. If you were expecting W3 style then yeah I can understand. I don't agree and you probably shouldn't have expected that for a new work adapted from the books, but I understand.

Yeah, the actress for Renfri definitely looked a lot more like how I imagine Triss to look (largely based on the games). I feel like she also had much better chemistry with Cavill in the few scenes they had. Was their romance just a video game thing or part of the books as well?

It's in the books as well. Triss had a fling with Geralt after he and Yennefer had one of their big breakups. Triss seized the opportunity while he was down in the dumps over it. She's been lusting for him ever since but knows it's hopeless because Geralt will always look back to Yen.

Finished it. Some nice scenarios and battles. The sudden changes in time did throw me here and there. It was just OK for me.

The forced diversity was silly for the most part. It’s a fantasy, but it’s clearly a medieval European setting and to have an African origin persons in a role for no rhyme or reason does detract from the world building. Haven’t seen such pointless pandering since Battlefield V.

I feel like this show has a lot of honesty, Henry is playing Geralt for all of his heart and he really care about that character.
Yes there is some forced diversity but it didn't hurt the show and i'm colorblind anyways.

I hope that season 2 is 90% Grealt adventures because he is the star of the show.

JohnnyFootball

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
I was wrong, Anna Shafer was not the right choice for Triss. Anna should have been cast as Sabrina.

Therisa Wilson-Read who played Sabrina should have been cast as Triss.
PhIT-FHC_400x400.jpg

Give her red hair and a lighthouse scene with Geralt. Oh man.
I will repost this and say that for those arguing about Triss,
Therisa dyed with red hair would have made an amazing Triss.

If you disagree, then FIGHT ME.

Anna should have played Sabrina.

How is this not tiring for yall to bitch about at this point.
I'm not some extremist sjw kinda person, but at some point the crying is reaching parody level. Like you are a walking, talking parody of a closeted racist.
Isn't the origin of this world that a mass event happened, tossing humans into the land, that quickly overtook it? Do we know where those humans came from, that literally 0 black people would have been tossed in? The show's cast is also mostly white. It's like, a small sprinkle of diversity at most. I don't agree with the little mermaid casting for example, hiring a black girl for a role that has been represented by a white person since it's inception is dumb. But a show with hundreds of extras and dozens of significant supporting characters having some diversity is not something to bitch about.

Comparing this to BFV is almost comical. BFV injected fiction into a non fiction event. This is fantasy top to bottom.

Are there any black people in the books? In the games? There is your answer. It's not that hard. Also, stop projecting your racism onto us for questioning forced diversity. That and your use of 'yall' gives you away. I'm pretty sure you are a SJW because they are the only people i see online using that word

The games not including poc is not a big deal

The show including poc is not a big deal

Arguing otherwise makes you look like a whiny fool

What part of that was unclear?
All of it. You make no case for your statement nor do you explain who made you the king of what is and isn't ok to argue. Finally, if your statement was true i have to wonder why you are even posting in this thread

Captain Hero

The Spoiler Soldier
I watched it for the 2nd time and this show has the potential to be a great one, Henry presented Geralt in a way I couldn't ask for more he is loving it not just acting for a show ! .. and I like the change in time events yes at first I was lost but then its obvious ( for me and I'm talking about my opinion ) .. the world and the atmospher is on point loved it , yes i hate that talking dragon it could be way better if its really was talking with a voice that fit for a dragon other than that everything was just great i wish season 2 go beyond in the world and of course id love to see more of Ciri and geralt togather

Not an argument

If you're going to drool over the keyboard why bother responding at this point?

Fuz Fuz

Not sure if you've seen the show runners response but it sounds pretty reasonable

Ah yes, the hot topic!

The discussions about race in the writers room, with the producers, and with Andrzej himself were long and varied. We talked about the history of the Conjunction of the Spheres (are all humans out in the ether the same color? Did the Conjunction drop certain races in certain areas?), we talked about the Continent being a huge place (are we to believe that people don't migrate?), and we talked the most about how racism was presented in the books. Like all readers, we always came down on the side that racism in the books is represented by species-ism -- humans vs. elves vs. dwarves vs. gnomes vs. halflings vs. monsters and so forth. It's not about skin color at all. You don't notice skin color when instead you're looking at the shape of ears, or the size of torsos, or the length of teeth.

Furthermore, in the books, there are a few mentions of skin color, usually "pale" or "wind-chapped." Andrzej very specifically didn't add in many details of skin color, he told me himself. Readers generally make assumptions (typically, unless otherwise noted, believe characters to be the same color as themselves). That said, the general assumption is that everyone in The Witcher is the same color, which is why all the focus is on species.

Because it's 2020, and because the real world is a very big and diverse place, we made a different assumption on the show. That people don't pay attention to skin color -- not because they're all the same color, but because the bigger differences are about species, not skin. If you went to your local supermarket and there were people with horns and tails, do you really think you'd be paying attention to how much melanin is in their skin?

Maybe the answer is yes. Clearly, it is for some people! But it wasn't for us, the writers and the producers.

Still not an argument. Sorry man, your whole answer questions with a question schtick won't work. You made a completely pointless post as a response to me and refuse to make a case for your opinion. So take your own advice and stop responding if all you have to offer is a lame attempt at dime store psychology

What a load of bullcrap. And doesn't seem reasonable, she's straight up admitting to tweaking the original material to push a personal political stance.

"Andrzej very specifically didn't add in many details of skin color, he told me himself"
Fringilla is described as very pale, for example. And he didn't really need to specify color for anyone, since it's pretty obvious the setting is a slavic middle ages. This is another Kingdom Come: Deliverance situation.

"Because it's 2020, and because the real world is a very big and diverse place, we made a different assumption on the show. "
It's not 2020, it's slavic middle ages.

"If you went to your local supermarket and there were people with horns and tails, do you really think you'd be paying attention to how much melanin is in their skin?"
This is straight up HURR DURR material.

It's also an adaptation (key word) of a fantasy universe. For the record, I didn't mind the direction of KCD took with its setting because I also felt the devs justified their choice.

I just hope none of you deride those who do play identity politics, would seem a bit hypocritical

KCD is a historical game based in a historical period. The Witcher TV is a fantasy show, set within a fictive universe. Just because they both have swords in them doesn't somehow make them comparable.

So we can have Nilfgaard all dressed like Ronald McDonald next season, righ? It's fantasy, no need for it to adhere to the reality of the middle ages.

Some very nice boob windows of her.
Fixed.

Ive seen i believe 5 episodes. Ive had this itch to start a new playthrough on The Witcher 3 and the show finally made me do it. With that said, ive never read the books so im curious how tf ciri dad is the nilfgaardian king in the game.

If anyone minds breaking that down for me lol.

The show itself wasn't that bad, sometimes confusing. Acting was good in some parts and so so in some other parts. However, watching the Witcher 2 and Witcher 3 cutscenes movies in Youtube are miles better than the Netflix show everything (story, characters etc.)

Slightly over the top don’t you think. It’s part of the critique, because it stands out.

The use of ‘its racist’ is a shield for protecting woke ideology. I don’t have a racist bone in my body, but are rational. If I watch Hidden Dragon, Crouching Tiger, a fantasy set in ancient China, I don’t expect to see random Mexicans around the cast. The Witcher being set in mediaeval Europe should respect it’s setting for sakes of coherence.

Looking forward to Ghosts of Tsushima by Sony. If that game set in feudal Japan ends up having diverse characters without a rational plot explanation it will be diluted and come of as stupid. Will it get criticised for its lack of diversity or does the hate only apply when the heritage is white? Rhetorical question.

It's not set in the middle ages. It's not set in medieval Europe either. It's set in a fictional fantasy universe. That you're apparently both incapable of imagining one where there are not only separate races (Humans, Elves, Dwarves) but that there can also be people of colour within them says more about your limitations of imagination than anything else.

If this was a case of revisionist history, I'd be with you (that KCD stuff was ridiculous) but it's not in this case. Move on.

Happy to, if you wouldn't mind spoiler tagging somewhat like the above?
Likely going to spoil a twist for yourself next season but:
Pavetta (Queen Calanthe's daughter [Episode 4]) as you know, is pregnant by Lord Urcheon/Duny. The child is Ciri. A few years later, the boat that Duny & Pavetta are on is sunk.
Stuff happens. Pavetta dies.

Duny returns to Nilfgaard. He is actually Emhyr var Emreis, the son of the deposed emperor and leads a revolt against the Nilfgaardian "Usurper".
Stealing directly from the wiki:
Following all the power struggles around the throne, Emhyr had all of his dead political enemies disinterred and used their gravestones to pave his ballroom, earning him the nickname "The White Flame Dancing on the Barrows of his Enemies"

Which is inspired by medieval Europe.
And is canonically NOT medieval Europe. Our world is a different sphere entirely.

So it’s science fiction with magic elements?

Sorry I can clearly see Middle Ages with medieval underpinnings set in Polish folklore, not a random invented whatever goes settings.

Any critique coming from someone that can’t see the obvious is then deemed irrelevant, or a deliberate ideological push.

I've only seen 3 episodes but damn this show is good so far. The games always kinda bored me, but maybe I'll give the 3rd one a shot again after I finish.

Hmmmmm im so conflicted.

Theres some good and tons of potential and yet so much shite

Just a lot of cheese. And a lot of poorly developed relationships and characters.

Personally i dont since im into the genre, but its not great by any means.

Finished yesterday, a good 7 of incouragement for the second season.

They need someone who writes better dialogues and someone who can build less silly armour...

I tried watching it with my daughter, sometimes it feels like I'm watching video games cut scenes from the 90s or something.

I just finished episode 5. I'm still liking this show a lot. I find that watching it with subtitles on helps a lot. Not just because of some of the accents, but because it's a ton of made up words and places and names. It helps with keeping up with the lore. It also helps catch little things like the hints on how much time has passed.

I almost want to say I could do with less tits. The woman who plays Yennifer has such a perfect body to me that I can't help but stare directly into the solar eclipse for way too long and it's distracting.
