Unreleased AMD Radeon RX GPU Shows Up in OpenVR Benchmark & Outperforms The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti by Up To 17%

An unreleased AMD Radeon RX GPU has been spotted by the folks over at AMD's subreddit which appears to be much faster than NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, at least in VR benchmarks. The GPU which was spotted alongside an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor has no final name so it's likely that this is a prototype or an early engineering sample of what is presumed to be the big Navi GPU.

An Unknown AMD Radeon RX GPU Shows Up & Beats The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti By 17% - Is This The Much Awaited Big Navi?
The graphics card appeared on the OpenVR Benchmark database and surprisingly, it is tested with a setup that consisted of an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor which is part of the AMD Renoir line of mobility processors. Development and engineering samples do get tested with weird test setups so this is most likely the case here but the more surprising detail is the performance numbers that this card is able to deliver.
Comparing in the CyubeVR benchmark at a resolution of 1512x1680 with an HTC Vive MV (90 Hz) HMD, the unreleased and unknown GPU manages to score 103.32 FPS while the fastest NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, in the same leaderboard, only manages to deliver 88.10 FPS. This is a 17% increase in performance over NVIDIA's flagship graphics card for the desktop market. There are also entries for the RTX 2070 and GTX 1660 Ti but those benchmarks were done at a low resolution and nothing as demanding as what the RTX 2080 Ti and the AMD GPU were tested at.

Now, this is a VR specific benchmark and we know that NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards have held a strong lead in VR titles over AMD's GPUs due to better optimizations in the software stack. But here we are looking at an entirely opposite scenario. The question is if this is indeed the big AMD Navi GPU based Radeon RX graphics card and if that is so, then could we see the same performance as the one showcased in this VR benchmark being carried over into traditional AAA titles. It would be really impressive if we get to see a Navi card that is up to 10-20% faster than the RTX 2080 Ti which would bring AMD back in the high-end enthusiast graphics segment with a bang.

AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, did recently promise high-end Radeon RX Navi GPUs. Lisa also mentioned that AMD is heavily investing in ray tracing for their 2020 discrete GPU lineup which would feature the 2nd Generation RNDA architecture with hardware-level integration to support ray-tracing. The features to expect from 2nd Generation RDNA Navi GPUs would be:

  • Optimized 7nm+ process node
  • Enthusiast-grade desktop graphics card options
  • Hardware-Level Ray Tracing Support
  • A mix of GDDR6 and HBM2 graphics cards
  • More power-efficient than First-Gen Navi GPUs
With that said, we are already aware of a recent rumor which pointed out that AMD's high-end Radeon RX Navi GPUs could be up to twice as fast as Navi 10, featuring a massive die size and GDDR6 memory. There are also reports that the next-gen Ampere GeForce GPUs could be as much as 50% faster and twice as efficient than the current Turing GPUs while offering significant increases in ray-tracing performance through hardware-level changes. Overall, this makes 2020 very interesting for high-end GPU launches and we can expect both NVIDIA and AMD to deliver some really high-end graphics cards this year. Expect announcements around Computex 2020.

Yay! It out performed a 2 year old chip. Similar to the excitement when the Xbox One X was released a year after the PS4 Pro being more powerful and more expensive. Who would have thought? :messenger_grinning: Engineering masters.

It's great that AMD is finally trying to trade blows with Nvidia on the high end. With that said, Nvidia don't sleep on the wheel like Intel and they will likely respond with something even stronger.

The code points to being a 4800H but the clocks don't match, and that chip is an APU with 7 GPU cores.

No way on earth is that outperforming a 2080ti.

I imagine there is some sub-diffuse going on with the number to stop it being linked to other chips.

Whether it's the PS5 chip or not is up for debate I guess. Don't think they would test scarlet's APU in VR though.

I hope it's not yet another dual-GPU card AMD is famous for, which look great only in benchmarks but then suck harder than a vacuum in actual games... But then again, a 5700XT already reaches 90 degrees on load, so I really cannot imagine any bigger single GPU from them, unless equipped in 3-slot cooler ot liquid cooling.

Please let this be true. I wanna go all in on AMD. Having AMD at the speeds would have a healthy impact to GPU market. :messenger_persevering: And even if the leak is true NViDiA will propably out perform it with their next release.

I thought this was confirmed to be related to that ASUS laptop announced at CES. (Score reflects a dual GPU setting)

This would be fine, they used to outdo one another on a yearly basis.... However AMDs driver situation is still bad.

I agree on the latter, but the 2080ti is just over a year old....
PS5 is GCN? Where did you hear this lie?
I'm guessing that's sarcasm......Though, you never know these days.....

It will only last until NVIDIA releases their 3000 series. It is always a back and forth where AMD has a short lived win. Yes, I prefer NVIDIA.

Breaking News!!!!!11121!!!

New graphics card better than old graphics card. Cats and Dogs sleeping together, pandemonium, coding to the metal and much more at 11.

In all seriousness I hope AMD finally tries to make a high end card. If for no other reason than to hopefully get Nvidia to stop price gouging people.

I see no reason to think this won’t be like every other generation where a hyped AMD GPU lags behind years old Nvidia stuff while consuming more power to do that.

Prove me wrong AMD.

I seriously doubt that new AMD card can outperform the 2080Ti in all aspects with gaming @ 4k. It would be very interesting to see.. but is still moot when 3080Ti will take the generation another step further.

According to the rumors there are three Big Navi's, Navi 23, Navi 22 and Navi 21......For all we know, this might be the lower end big Navi...…..And besides, Nvidia is not nearly as ready in releasing Ampere or cards on 7nm just yet...….Remember, when Navi was in the works, NV was still working on Turing and Turing had some issues at launch, many defective and space invader graphics syndrome...…...Big Navi will land ahead of Ampere and when Nvidia brings Ampere, AMD will go 5nm Navi refresh with improvements.....

The fight is on...…...

Come on man. You are sounding overly optimistic and glorified over AMD. I get it, they support your favorite console. But let's get back to reality for a second -- Nvidia is waaay ahead of AMD concerning GPUs. I don't see that changing anytime soon. However, I will get an AMD CPU with my next upgrade. They are knocking it out the park with that.
