Phil Spencer: Xbox Game Pass isn’t “burning money to gain customers”

Why should they buy when they can play it for 1$ on GP? Day one
Why should they buy if they are available later on PSNow?

You are avoiding the questions now.

Is God of War devalued now that it has been on PSNow? It was worth 29.99 before it went on Now, what is it worth now?

I stayed true to my word and started playing Hellblade today. It's a game I probably wouldn't have bought/played if not for gamepass. Although, I am enjoying it. One of my friends told me I wouldn't like it because it's too linear. While it is a linear game I don't mind it at all. I just came off playing 100 hours in Witcher 3. Linear seems good at the moment.

Gamepass is awesome. If it's currently losing money for Microsoft then so be it. It's a great deal to me. I'm sure their plan is to eventually make money off of it. I have a feeling we'll look back in a few years and think back to when we used to buy our games at full retail prices instead of subscriptions. Much like most do with physical movies and music.

can't stand the truth?
I asked you over and over to provide examples of devaluing games, while showing they aren’t being devalued and you have offered nothing back.

I think anyone reading this sees you get a big L here.

You have done nothing to disprove anything I have wrote.

And I’m done wasting my time with you.

Putting your big AAA game to rent day 1 is devaluing your games, did new Halo sell more than previous Halo?

This is the best thing about Game pass, I've had my 3 months trial and I'm now paying 10.99 (UK) a month for it. I find myself playing genre of games I've never played, either I never had the patience for them or I never got on with them. Problem is find time to play them all. At 10.99 Game pass is great value.

Noticed how that salty Big Shot, stealthily, quietly didn't respond to your post 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🙊🙊🙊..he quickly hopped on the F train to Brooklyn 😂🤣😂🤣😂

Except it does, they will make as much as possible an OK game that meet Ms standard, no reason to make bigger, riskier game because why should they? Mean while the 3rd pt bigger dev will still give a shit about GP, they will sell it as much as they can then add to GP sometime later to maximum their profit. Where should they sell it? Sony hardware welcome you, because Ms hardware has no value at all.
or should you learn to read? He's just proving my point

I'm surprised that a lot of Sony and Nintendo fans are basically ignorant to Subscriptions in general. It's fine if Sony and Nintendo don't embrace Subscription gaming, but it'll mean that it kills the growth opportunity of the platforms, especially when (Not if) Subscriptions become big in the industry, it'll be hard to attract people onto the platforms.

This mentality pretty much gives Microsoft basically no competition in the Subscription Gaming space, be it on Console, PC or Cloud Gaming.

It'll be hard to convince a Mobile gamer to spend $60 for a game. Subscriptions at a cheap price is much more accessible, Stadia and GP has showed that.

I expect it'll be difficult to attract Xbox gamers who are GP subscribers to the PS Ecosystem as an additional console since they are used to Subscriptions with unlimited content. Sony simply doesn't offer a service to that level. It'll probably be easier to attract PS gamers onto the Xbox ecosystem (additional console) since all they need is good AAA content.

Yep any game add to GP add more value FOR GP, not the game. GTA doesn’ t need GP to has big value. And MS is burning money to add GTA to GP. /thread

TBH, They should burn money. It helps grow the service. Would Sony be willing to burn money to grow PS Now if they're forced to compete? They would need to burn a lot more money to catch up to Game Pass.

Giving something away for a dollar that you could otherwise charge $59.99 for is the fucking definition of burning money. Please.

While I honestly have no idea if Phil is misleading or not, I don't see why gamepass couldn't currently be a win for MS.

MS's exclusives don't sell the same numbers as Sony's does. So something like GP makes sense for MS. A company like Sony uses a slightly different model. Too many people thinking that the traditional model is the only one that'll work.

To simplify things... Let's give MS 100 customers, and give Sony 200, as a rounding figure to where they might be at.

Sony's biggest exclusives let's say are an Uncharted Game and say... Tlou. (This isn't necessarily true, just examples.)

MS's biggest exclusives let's say are Halo, and Gears.

MS's big hitters have only been selling to roughly 10-15 people of it's 100 person base. To make things even worse overall, is that 10-15 people didn't buy halo and then a completely set of people bought gears. Some of them were customers who bought both. Either way, let's say that 19 separate people accounted for 27 total sales.
Would it not make sense for MS to do GamePass where they can get 75 people to sub to it, even if only 50-55 stay subbed regularly?

The 27 games sold would equal somewhere around 1,700. The 55 subscribers that stick around for a year would net you 3,300 if it costs about 5 bucks a month. Seeing as blockbusters aren't guaranteed year after year. The GP strategy makes sense.

Meanwhile, Sony sold over 70 games from its 2 exclusives and 200 customers, that netted them well over 4 grand. They also have a trend of putting these numbers up year after year even if they swap in other exclusives such as GoW for UC, or Spider-Man for tlou. No need for them to go in on a GP deal.

In typical console war fashion, it seems some want GP to succeed only because Sony doesn't have it, while others want GP to fail for the exact same reason.

I really, really don't mind Gamepass succeeding. But what grinds my gears is the fantasy notion that tradition consoles are dying and that Microsoft is just being smart to jump ship.

Sony and Nintendo are NOT doing Gamepass, because they are making more money doing it the old way. Microsoft failed in the traditional business model, and as such is trying to pivot away. But that doesn't magically mean Sony should imitate Microsoft, that doesn't even make sense.

There is no shame in pivoting. Nintendo did a pivot when they merged their console with their handheld. And good on them for it. But it is insane to then claim Sony or Microsoft should release a Hybrid too. That's why I am objecting to. Stop trying to go full sour grapes by saying traditional console is dying, that is the way of the loser side.

This doesn't tell us anything about them not wasting money.
Now you change the words so you can be "right".

He said he isn't burning money (I assume Phil was not answering a question about making bond fires of 100$ bills in the hope it would get gamepass to be a lucrative service).

So I say that there is a risk in this move, no matter the merits of the service in and of itself (which I accept, but I don't think that it is for everyone, me for example, and their library is not that good, I'm sorry but if I cared about new and old MS exclusives I would have bought an Xbox One a long time ago).

Anyway, I don't have as much time to play as before, so I get 2 to 4 games per year and I try to finish them.... Paying for a monthly service doesn't make sense as it would cost me more and in the specific case of gamepass, the day 1 AAA games just aren't that good anyway, so why bother? To me that sounds like the used car salesman telling me about the features of a car that would barely work well enough to get out of the display room. Sure it does great things, but it won't fullfil my gaming needs either way, what's the point?

Subscription anything sucks ass and leads to a smaller supply of games in the long run.

Games are already fucking dirt cheap as it is. And most games are 10+ hour experience. For anyone employed, time is the issue not price.

Im sorry but if someone else's opinions on something that has absolutely nothing to do with you or your console of choice, "grinds your gears" you need to take a break dude.

Its like fox said, fanboys praise it tf out of it cuz its not on ps, while the other fanboys are in every thread with their pitchforks out wanting it to fail.

As for Phil showing numbers, regardless if he shows good numbers he's still just going to be a liar to the fangirls crying.

The question is, since "xbox is dead/irrelevant/etc" or whatever other stupid things you guys say. Why are you crying in every single xbox related thread? I see some of you posting more in xbox threads than ps ones lol. Go outside, "its just a game" 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Still waiting for that in Czech Republic, but how long is download service on PSNow going, definitely shorter amount of time than GamePass and streaming is something I have no interest in, especially in PS3 quality and internet compression. Well, on the go maybe yes, but there is not an infrastucture for that now, at least not in here, despite being on LTE 99% of time, here few kms away from Prague.

I just did the speed test and I have 31mbps down/25 up 16ms ping and jitter of 25ms. So maybe is not that bad, but not nearly enough...

The best way for psnow Is owning a ps4 so you can download instead of stream

I have a shit connection too,so i don't care either, unless xcloud Is free on gamepass so i can play, but if i have to pay another subscription Is a no no thing for me

Sony should do like a platinum subscription that includes plus and psnow. I tried the free trial when it released and saw it was just streaming then, and just canceled it.

At least now you can download the games.

He has to save face, the brand is floundering. They probably wouldn’t even have released a new console if Xbox wasn’t as insignificant as it is to Microsoft as a whole. I think as of right now they only make up 10% of their total revenue.

Look at Nintendo's online subscription.... You get a ton of their NES and SNES games for a very low price. You don't think that they testing the waters?

You probably did not read my message properly. It's not available in here. Still. So that makes GamePass automatically a winner.

They had to release Scarlet, the development cost was already spent years ago. Consoles are suppose to be long term commitments, and if you don't support it it dies like Vita did.

i strongly believe that Vita only died because Sony was busy keeping PS3 1st party output going. That they really couldn't support both PS3 and Vita at the same time. And Nintendo clearly also believe that having separate handhelds and consoles is a massive drain on resources.

The need for unique CELL servers is probably why it is hard to row them out. A true PS3 emulator would make Sony's life much easier.

Well I know I take jabs at Microsoft often but I don't dislike them or hate them at all. I had the OG xbox, 360 and a xbox one s. I just have 0 interest in their new system because they have no games I want to play and the few I do want to play are on PC also so owning a xbox console is pointless for me. I haven't turned on the xb1s in a year now.

I'd bet xbox is less than that to them annually. They own a shitload of stuff aside from windows, windows server, office, etc. They own LinkedIn, Skype, etc. And own a lot of backend development tools and coding apis and more. Really I think they should just ditch hardware and become a publisher and developer for playstation, Nintendo and PC.

Software is their strong point. Except when they try to tie to hardware because their hardware usually always sucks and they get so wrapped up in just having super awesome sounding hardware they forget the stuff that actually counts.

In the past yes, but their hardware in the last few years has been excellent. OneX, Surface and so on are fantastic pieces of kit.
And as far as pc goes, they really don't care if you play there, it will be on windows anyway which gives them access to sell you other Microsoft products

I agree, we saw with the Wii U that Nintendo didn’t have enough resources to support two systems separately through first party output. Consolidating was the best decision they’ve made.

MS's billions does not belong to the gaming division, those profits were not made by the gaming division......What sense does it make to take monies out of your profitable business and invest it into a venture that's clearly not sustainable on it's own...….It's like losing money for kicks, money depletes eventually no matter how much you have, so never assume (rich company) just have endless money to burn, history has shown us how high some companies can fall......So again, why would MS not invest their profits in Office, Servers. server apps; the services that makes them big money, why wouldn't they invest more in that where they can make more money?

OG XBOX did not even sell 40 million, 360 made money, but RROD took it all back, Kinect was eventually a failure, which they had to reign in this gen......Gamepass is just not a profitable venture in it's current state, this is not a guess, it's a fact...….The business model of gamepass should be like Netflix, but I don't know that I ever got 3 months of Netflix for $1 at any point or got Netflix premium for years by just paying a few more bucks, just like some did to get Gamepass Ultimate for years...….This just can't be sustainable, so if you like gamepass and you think it will still be here in the next two years with this type of model, you're not being realistic or logical at all......

So I wonder, if and when Gamepass folds in the next two years, what will people say then...….It certainly won't be a surprise...…...MS will have to make some big moves in pricing the service higher with more exclusive and appealing content and quality exclusives will cost them.....

The thing is, For the first two Gears games I'd say yes, people bought DLC like crazy, Gears was popular and had a huge following online. Gears no longer calls such shots...…..I played Gears campaign and was done, I never played anything else on the service, but my point is, Gears is just not as popular online anymore, so depending on gamepass subs to buy DLC is not going to work to any substantive profitability matrix....
Right so if Microsoft re-invests the billions on profit from XBox into GamePass it cant be sustainable?
So their liars now? LMAO!

Xbox + GP = Got em shook! Lol
Yep.

Im just gonna keep playing for GamePass.
If it turns out to be bad (spoiler: it won't) or if Microsoft ends it.

While all this talk about Microsoft lowering the value of their own games... I think we're missing the part where people on game pass are less likely to buy games for other consoles. Like why would I play anything that's on gamepass on my PS4?

For example, I used to play all my multiplat games on the PS4. Now I only play the exclusives. Instead I either play them on gamepass (M$ makes money) or I buy them for my Xbox. (again M$ makes money) gamepass isn't the only reason to play them on that system. The X is more powerful and the controller is nicer. But having gamepass keeps my logging into my Xbox. I have a subscription running I might as well check out the new games they just added.

While my PS4 is collecting dust sitting next to it. Just sitting there waiting for The Last of Us 2 to come out. But by the time it comes out Cyberpunk will be out and I might as well wait for the PS5 version so I don't have to pay for it twice like I did this last gen.

What billions on profit? From XBOX-ONE?

Still you can't invest all your profit on Gamepass, XBOX is not only gamepass......So far we can't even gauge how much of a demand Gamepass would have at $15 or $20 a month because all you need to do is wait for the $1 or $2 deals.....

Gamepass needs to have lots of great AAA exclusive content so people will subscribe.......I don't need gamepass to play Gears, Hellblade, Metro, Outer Worlds, etc........Yet, if I buy those games elsewhere, I have them forever.......I doubt having all those games on Gamepass for $1 is profitable, so unless MS starts putting compelling games on gamepass that you can't find anywhere else, it's not much of a differentiator from any other store or service.....At least PSNOW have over 900 games, so people will subscribe on variety alone.....

Right now this isn't much of an issue. There aren't enough 3rd party games on gamepass yet.
If they manage to score ubi or ea and roll some of their library into gamepass they they'll relegate playstation to exclusives only box for a lot of people.
Especially if the seriesX is a faster machine.
It would be pretty cool to have ea pass rolled into a feature of gamepass ultimate.

I mostly agree with you. Gamepass does have a decent amount of third party games. But you're right that they could still do more there and by doing so could really be a big deal for next gen.

I never realized the amount of compassion people have regarding Microsoft's financial well-being. I'm tearing up.

While a lot are fanatic, there is a good argument for concern with what potential ripple effects this can have on the industry if things go south.

If you don’t have an Xbox and don’t plan on buying one why are you posting in this thread?
I have an active MAU you know, so I have the account.... Either way, this is on MS if I don't own their console, so I have to let them know somehow what I see as wrong in their approach.

Is this supposed to be a circle jerk thread?

There should be some kind of warning :

MS said console hardware doesn't matter, only xbox accounts are important. However for this thread when we say: Do you have an xbox? we mean the console only, so if you don't own at least an Xbox One AND WILL PRAISE EVERYTHING MICROSOFT DOES, just leave or you will be reported to the proper authorities.
