Matt Booty (Xbox): No next gen exclusives for the next two years

From MCVUK:

“All of our games… will play up and down that family of devices” – Xbox’s Matt Booty ends the next-gen exclusive as we know it

“As our content comes out over the next year, two years, all of our games, sort of like PC, will play up and down that family of devices,” Booty explains. “We want to make sure that if someone invests in Xbox between now and [Series X] that they feel that they made a good investment and that we’re committed to them with content.”

Are you worried about this strategy? Or is Xbox making a smart move?

Seems like two different strategies.

MS: No next-gen exclusive the first two years (so cross between Xbox One and Xbox Series).
Sony: All first-party launch titles for PS5 are exclusives (so no PS4 version).

Let's see which one cater more sales in November.

Then why should they make new consoles? That’s very stupid to say
Consoles tend to be a lot cheaper than Gaming PCs and a lot of people like myself enjoy the simplicity and convenience of a console rather than a PC.

I think it's fairly clear they're leaning towards the gamepass and I have to admit it's their only chance to compete with Sony at this point.

Is it enough though? We'll have to see.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
It was common for both platforms in this gen, so I don't see the big news here.

It's too early to say now if the games developed from the studios they recently gained will be good, but if they rushed them out now and they became mediocre that would mean people would believe even less in Microsoft.

And that's a thing they can't afford after the Xbox One

I understand why things the way they are, but honestly more than anything I want to open and smell the new consoles like a little kid on christmas opening the N64 and being absolutely WOWed by the games. Anything short of that is just business as usual.

I have to be honest here and say that I am not going to buy an Xbox Scarlett. So I am not directly affected by it, but I am planning on playing games on PC and I would guess that the games in this transitional phase, that also come to PC because Universal Play, are looking worse than they could be, because someone wants to also have it running on their 1.3 TFLOP Xbox One.

(Maybe a bit dramatic and in reality I don't care that much. I think games look great right now and it always takes years into a new generation until we see the real bangers in terms of graphical fidelity).

It doesn't bode well for next-gen adoption, but overall it's a good thing for their customer base.

Their vision of abolishing console generations is coming to fruition. Suits them. If Sony did the same thing, I'd be pissed.

Interestingly, I'm keen on getting an Xbox One X now.

They’d be very stupid to just depend on game pass. Not a smart move and if that really what they’re planning (which I don’t think) then it’s better for them to not make new gen consoles.

By the way, I didn't realize there was a similar thread to mine before I made this. Feel free to close and direct conversation here.

Seems like they think gamepass solely will help launch. Might as well not release till games are ready imo.

Games will have to be enhanced in a major way on cross gen titles for me to buy at launch. Otherwise just save money.

It is not common before and only MS is doing it this time.
Sony first-party won't release on PS4 like previous gens (PS4 first-party games didn't release on PS3... same for PS2).

again, says who? they released pro games on base ps4.. they will do the same nextgen, because the architecture is similar and its easy to develop... its not like ps3 to ps4, where it would be extremely difficult to port a game!

Pro are not a new gen lol
The goal of Pro is to play all PS4 games with better "effects" and "performance" (something it didn't archived).

BTW all games are developed to PS4 as base not Pro (TLOU2 is being developed to PS4 as base)... they add a patch to Pro.

And to end the conversation Sony already said first-party games will be PS5 games exclusives.

this will be the same for sony, do you think that sony will be releasing games that are playable ONLY ON PS5 - and not PS4? you are delusional if you think that.
I think you are delusional if you think the PS5 isn't launching with PS5-only games.

Who even wants that? You just bought a brand new next gen system for a reason, and it wasn't to be limited to what was possible in the previous generation.

I can’t see to Sony releasing for example a AAA game such as Horizon 2 on 2020 or early 2021 exclusive to PS5, only I see if they don’t mind about economical loses on that game.

This happens every generation. Destiny was on PS3 and Xbox 360.... GTA5 was on both, Skyrim... the list goes on. Same thing happened the gen before with games like Burnout. There are a lot of people that already own PS4 and XBO. They aren't all buying new systems on launch day. There's not enough to go around even if they wanted to.

why then XSX ? if you planning to release games two years later ! if you call that a strategy then its a stupid one
patience is good but not in this way , this indicates that MS doesn't have a clear strategy when it comes to exclusives I mean do you have a guarantee that one of your games wont be cancelled ! after all the wait I mean its TWO YEARS Microsoft !

tbh I'm in if they are working in a new Alan Wake game lol

There is no economical loss. 1st party games exist to sell hardware. That is their primary duty. If they make money on the side it is just a bonus. Priority is to increase the instal base of next gen ASAP, in order to encourage 3rd party to move in as soon as possible.

Microsoft of course, is either ignorant of this, or more likely was physically not able to make it in time to have Scarlet exclusives ready for launch. Microsoft is not ignorant of how launch consoles are sold, they just have no choice in the matter this time around.

The last PS4 first-party release is Ghost.
After that every AAA first-party game will be PS5 only.

That is how Sony makes money with both hardware and software sales.... one push the other.

People needs to stop that ideia that because MS do something Sony will do too lol
Sony has it own plans not related with what plans MS has.

Imo it's a lack of confidence that XSX will have a far better start than Xbox One, given the size of their current installbase.

It also makes sense, because their newly acquired studios most likely can't deliver high quality titles before that time.

How you see this is as a lack of confidence is 😂😂

If you were smart you would see they would rather sell to a 60+ million install base rather than to a launch install base only.

Soooo... In One or Two years? I don't know which one is true!? Either way, Id only expect I heavy hitter once in a while from Xbox. Don't know why People make it a big deal like some Gaf users say " Quality over Quantity".. If I remember correctly, didn't the PS4 started to pick up some good stuff 2 years after release?

If you are smart, you would note that they are making Scarlet exclusives, it would just be a whole year after launch. So that means they are not rather selling to current gen machines, rather their games are just 1 year behind schedule.

I really don’t like this. One to two years of first party games not putting the hardware to full use? On the contrary, those are the exact games I expect to be showpieces for the console, while third parties are hedging their bets with cross-gen.

We’ll have to see how things turn out, but being anchored by a platform that came out in 2013, and wasn’t the best in the first place, seems like it will hold back game and tech design in these new games.

If Sony charges out the gate with actual exclusives, I can’t see this playing well for Microsoft. Then again, looking at TLOU2 and Ghosts, maybe they have a similar strategy.

Makes sense due most of their studios being recent acquisitions.
You usually needs over 3 years to output a AAA game that is not reused assets/engine like Fifa and CoD.

Two years from NOW. Which translates to roughly 1 year after Scarlet's actual launch date.

Software-wise, it's smart. Yes.
Hardware-wise, it shows a lack of confidence.

But better safe than sorry.

Besides, they already had studios that could've developed XSX "exclusives".

I have no issue with no exclusives, they literally just acquired all these studios.

My issue is why release the console knowing that no games will be ready for launch.

It’s an interesting move, though. Nobody has ever prioritized the existing last-gen customers before. It just ends (with a few games left), and you’re expected to lay down the money and move on to continue.

Sign of the times maybe, with how much a console investment is perceived to be these days. I say perceived, because people spend much, much more, much more often on stuff like tablets, phones, and smartwatches, but seem to very slowly accept these entry costs for next-gen.

Eh, I don't quite like the sound of that. Hope they have a change of mind on this in some aspect. Maybe they mean absolute exclusives? They at least need some timed 1st-party exclusives for XSX before bringing them to services like Gamepass and Xcloud, IMHO.

We know they're gonna have the 1st-party content problem resolved this generation, but exclusives do still matter, Microsoft.

With the right game, this strategy could work for sure. Not all first-party, but just the correct one. Releasing a game such as God of War 5 or Horizon 2 or Gran Turismo 7 exclusively would have the dual effect of rapidly accelerating platform growth and potentially propel sales and the [optically-desireable] attach-rate of said game to obscene levels. It's obviously a risky manoeuvre, but it's totally worth it for them to do this with at least one major game to demonstrate a true next-gen experience.

Has sony confirmed this?

I've only heard the their PS4 games like TLOU2 will get upgrade patches, etc.

Godfall has stated PS5 and PC but is rumored to be a timed exclusive with other platforms TBD.

Maybe with Microsoft it happens every generation. Sony didn't release Knack or Killzone Shadow Fall on PS3, they didn't release Resistance: Fall of Man, Genji: Days of the Blade or Untold Legends Dark Kingdom on PS2, etc., etc. By the way I love how you mentioned all third party games saying "this happens every generation" lol.

When you consider the different architecture between each gen, you can see why they didn't release those games on past generations. That's not the case with this gen tho. I don't really care. I'm still day uno.
