Nintendo's New Switch Enters Mass Prdocution in 1Q

I still dont see it - A "Pro" version is the opposite of the audience they target - but good luck to those who want this*.

*Im Nindie focused for my daily use, so id purchase a pro but itd be far down my list.

The audience for this are the same people who didn't like phatDS but jumped in with DS lite. If the magnesium casing is true, this thing will be a real looker, basically a 'handheld for suits'. The added power wouldn't even be the #1 draw here.

I also think that this model could exclusively feature non-gaming apps like netflix and prime.

looking forward to this. as to Nintendo's audience, it's people who play video games. no doubt they would be interested in a machine that helps them play their old games but better. even indie games.

ive had a Switch for several years now and built up a nice library but will buy a Pro in a heartbeat cos i know that BOTW replay alone will be glorious

I dont expect a major upgrade which sucks. The New 3DS is the only mid ben upgrade they have done with upgrades to the internals, and that basically went unused for 90 percent of games. The eye tracking was legit though.

Wait.. but everyone told me the current model was selling like hotcakes and Nintendo wouldn't bother putting out a Pro model because it wasn't necessary? Argh... just bought a couple lites for my kids and the normal version for the TV. Guess I will be selling the TV version soon if the pro model is a substantial upgrade.

the GameBoy Color was officially a mid gen upgrade, also the DSi was one aswell. the DSi was a really small upgrade tho, more ram, a camera and I think a tiny upclock.
it had an online store and downloadable exclusives tho.

I guess I never considered the GBC to be a mid gen upgrade but looking back I guess it does indeed fit in that category. The DSI I considered still just a DS with some functions but I forgot about the store and exclusive downloads.

1Q = 1st quarter
Q1 = Quarter 1

both should be just as logical.

I dont believe in big speed bumb either, they wont add anything hi-tech because it eats profits. Most I would expect is something near xbox one s performance but not above it.

I love my switch, but it's already significantly outdated where current gen games run horribly on the hardware.

Not sure why Nintendo is doubling down on hardware when those who wanted a Switch likely already have one.

Dragon Ball Z fighters load times on the Switch to me is an unplayable game, something I fully regret getting and pretty much will not purchase any non-nintendo game for Switch going forward.

My best guess is that they're still using a Mariko chip but with a better gpu. I say this because
the Mariko SOC is underclocked right now on the "new" Switch models with better battery life.

I think we'll get a "Pro" Switch with the Mariko speeds unlocked, better gpu, 6-8 gigs ram, IGZO
screen and of course the magnesium alloy case(which will also help with heat dissipation
.

Edit: I also believe this will be fully backwards compatible with the current Switch games but will
obviously give them a performance bump. No way Nintendo brings out a new Switch model without
it being backwards compatible with current offerings.

Not a bad guess, I like it.

I just hope this is their home console and and they compete again against Ms and Sony

That ship has sailed and the entirety of gaming is better for it. Not sure there is any benefit of Nintendo trying to match specs with other two when a good chunk of the games on the system are indie classics that wouldn't need the juice or use Nintendo magics to make them look beautiful as is. (thinking Luigi's Mansion 3)

Don't get me wrong, I want the very best Switch that I can have for the money. Give me a Nintendo Switch Advance at $350:

7" 1080p screen
Switch Lite form factor
No dock but compatible with the OG dock OR a Pro Dock with Ethernet and Hard Drive Support (Add $50)
6 GB of Ram and Mariko used to it's full potential

I'm all in on that!

I highly doubt we will see a true next gen Switch this year. Nintendo knows they can't compete with MS and Sony on power, and also knows that a Switch 2 would not compete with the next gen systems when people are already going to be shelling out $500. They might put out a tv-bound version with a 500 gig hard drive, but not a full successor.

Wait till 2021 or 2022 when you can get PS4 (mabey PS4 Pro?) performance out of a tablet system for $299, and we will all line up to buy the damn things all over again. If they want to use a different cart that will not allow the Switch 1 to accept them aka 3DS, fine, but make it back-compatible with physical carts this time, digital going foward.

That game looked soooooo god damn gorgeous and I'm not just talking about overall graphics, I'm also talking about its animation, its truly Pixar level good.

I think it's smart. If it comes out before the powerhouses, people may pick one up before they pick up the PS5/Xbox SX, if they leave it until after ppl with think, "nah, already got a new console and it's more powerfully than the switch".

I'll believe it when I see it, I think it's a little early for it but it would make sense strategically I guess.

Don't know you guys, I'll quite happy if this Switch was an 'only docked' version.
Given that their current competition (MS and Sony) are far more adept at the home console experience, and given that the popularity of the switch currently stems largely from its core concept of being able to play your favorite games anywhere, I'd say Nintendo would be foolish to drop the portability.

It is basically what he (not you) does in every thread.

What about the Switch new hardware in production?

That's modern traditional Chinese that is read from left to right like latin based languages.

i think this will be a docked only console.

i can't imagine that the technology is there right now for them to compete with ps5/xsx while using a battery for power and passive cooling or using a tiny ass fan.

if they want to compete with those two consoles then they need a traditional console box that can hook up to the wall and have a case large enough for decent cooling.

if they do upgrade the standard model then i would definitely upgrade but i wouldn't expect it to be compete with next gen consoles. i don't even think nvidia has any new chips that would be much of an improvement over what we have right now.

If they drop the portability aspect or divide the player base I will be very disappointed. It's the core concept of the Switch that makes it so appealing for me. A docked only would be pointless just like the Lite-version.

CPU at 1200mhz was already unlocked by firmware, probably for the PRO since no game use it at the moment.
I have some doubts for a only improved clock for the GPU above 1ghz in docked mode, since the Jetson Nano had half of the cores, I think 384cores at 1ghz would be enough for 1080p in many games.

To the people really beliving the is a "only docked console": Are you guys MENTAL? Do you even understand what actually saved Nintendo from the MASSIVE Wii U failure? It was a "good idea" - and that idea was to get out of the high-end home console race (and let Sony and Microsft duke it out exclusively) by entering the high-end portable console market - with the Nintendo Switch - and make it so powerfull that you can hook it up to your HD-TV while marketing it as a hybrid console (which it is) -- and insteat of saying "its a protable console you can hook up to the TV", they chose "its a home console you can take on the go" - because thats better for marketing (it still sounds like Nintendo never left the home console market).

So, in short. Being a hybrid-stystem is one of the biggest strength of the Nintendo Switch and its marketing appeal - and now there are some people who actually believe there might be a chance Nintendo releases a "home only" device - It's ridiculous.

It wouldn’t really be a home only device though, it would be part of the Switch family which all play the same games. One is TV only, one is handheld only and the other does both.

I don’t see how that is a bad thing. And it’s the most realistic/easy way of getting a performance upgrade over the current offerings.

If someone can answer if this is possible;

A handheld switch, more powerful then the original but when placed in the new dock, it makes it as strong as a One X? I know it would probably be expensive as hell, I'm just asking if it's possible technically to have a portable that's at around a teraflop, but a dock that juices it to a monster level.

If possible, could this all be done for 399$? Or are we talking 499?

That would be a 4x jump, wouldn't it? Frankly, that's around what I was expecting for their NEXT GEN Switch, not the refresh. That would be pretty nuts for something that has to fit into a handheld case.

I hope it's a TV-only model and comes with a pro controller instead of joy cons

I have no issues with a docked-only Switch, especially if it lets Nintendo push current Switch software at much higher resolutions and frame rates, but I think it would be a strategic misstep unless they do (at least one of) two things.

1. Put a slot on top so that the Switch and the Lite can "dock" with the console. I know the Lite can't dock in the way that the Switch does, but because the console would have its own hardware, it wouldn't need to. Just clone the cartridge to memory once, and have the portable console transfer save data/sync every time it's docked, and you have Switch-like docking on both handhelds.

2. Aim for a Switch 2 level of power and a similar architecture. If this console is powerful enough to run, say, current gen Switch software at 4k and 60fps, that would be about a generational leap over the docked Switch, a significant upgrade but one they could provide at a budget-console price. THEN, in three years, they could roll out another hybrid that provides the same power-level docked. Three years after that, a Switch 3-level console (assuming the worlds hasn't gone nuts for streaming by then).

If they do these things, they could give us a console only Switch, that kind of (but not really) competes with next gen consoles, allows for clear generations even with a mix of hardware, keeps the Switch's core concept alive and even saves the Switch Lite from pointlessness.

Does that mean I think they actually will do any of this? Hell no. Nintendo, for better and for worse, always surprises. I half-expect a console-only Switch that only plays digital games, matches the base PS4 in power, and costs only $50 less than a PS5. Lol

If Nintendo go custom at Nvidia they could get around 1.3-1.5 tflop docked matching Xbone and PS4.

And for now I still don't see a nVidia SoC ready for a Pro version but everything can happen ;)

Edit - Add another article link.

Besides the Tegra X2? You know, the Pascale based Tegra that's more effecient than even Mariko? Or a customer made Xavier? Xavier has tensor cores at that which could help immensely with AI programming, and shaders. Weird everyone here isnt even thinking of that, just overclocking the current chip.
