Just because Sony leaves doesn't mean its the end of the world. Other pubs can step in and host events. If you think E3 should die then so should PAX which is absurd.

E3 is still a major venue for the gaming public.

Not for anyone outside of NA it isn't, and Sony isn't nearly so dependent on that market as MS is.

More importantly E3's importance and cachet was largely due to its importance to business and that it was for many years a trade-only event. Since it became a public event in 2017 its stock has basically plummeted, because its nothing special anymore.

I am very emotional about it. Sony was always the #1 show at E3 I was looking forward to the most.
Yes of course I am still going to watch E3, get my snacks and drinks ready, but it won't be the same.

The show were Sony revealed FF VII Remake, The Last Guardian and Shenmue 3 was just legendary.

I can see E3 getting less and less relevant over the next 5 years, but we still have Gamescom and other personal events from the big boys.

One’s irrelevant and the other doesn’t have a press conference. Just stations with games that you can find at mall’s.

It's kinda embarrassing that Sony apparently doesn't have enough material to show in a year they're launching a new system. This actually makes me think Sony expects a rather muted reaction, maybe due to high price or lack of great exclusives because PS4 is getting them already?

There's nothing 'shitpost' about my posting you quoted.

It absolutly is just the same type of post you are complaining about. No facts in your post just back handed comments about how Sony is "Embarrasing" and negative assumptions about how Sony "expects a muted reaction" and maybe its due to "high price or lack of great exclusives"

It definalty is a shit post. You can pretend all you want but it is obvious to all that you are attacking Sony with nothing but assumptions or pretend facts. Just own it. :messenger_winking:

Saves Sony money, why pay an external party when you have your own building you can use.
Unfortunate for the fans that look forward to it yearly (attendance, not livestream viewers).

Either Jason is lying or sony is just haphazardly throwing the ps5 together and hoping for what ever happens happens. E3 has always been important since it is pretty much the only time during the year we can get concert info and look into the futre of games and systems are scheduled to come out. E3 going away would be a huge dis service to everyone The only company that has a competent setup were they can do direct is nintendo and maybe square. MS Xo events look like there done by a high school news crew and Sonys Directs might as well be speedruns for how fast we can shovel out infromation with 0 explanation. these companies already try to keep stuff and quiet as possible getting rid of e3 pretty much gives these companies free reign to say nothing and just throw out games with tons of shady business models.

E3 had a good run, last year was it's death knell with Sony's absence......This year without Sony is literally beating a dead horse.....E3 lost lots of it's soul since they culled it many years ago....

Going too mainstream over the years killed it. Once it had a quirky, niche feel that didn't penetrate the normie media. Now it's a corporate madhouse where marketing idiots gather in committees to focus on important PR elements like striking out the possibility of seeing a cute booth girl.

You're looking at the glass half empty. Instead of one bloated E3 event, now games and companies have their own mini E3s all around the year.
These companies never take any
I don't think it's about money.

It's a good thing for them, hopefully more developers/console manufacturers will do the same.
It's all a big circle jerk for so called gaming journalists.
You can have your own online event and choose the time when it suits you. Unlike E3, where there is fixed time and you have to compete with other console makers/developers for attention and news.
People think E3 is a big event but in reality it's really not. Sure people stream but hardcore people and people like gaffers. Regular Joe gamer doesn't give a shit and just reads the headlines. And guess what, regular Joe gamer is in the majority, hardcore people are in the minority.
Just my 2 cents.
When has the average joe and what they want been a good thing the average joe is fine with every company making a BR games and buying MTX for $60 yearly releases of Cod and madden

Weird imo it’s still has to much coverage for gamers, the Christmas for gamers ...

gives MS the stage to go full Xbox Series X, I bet Phil is laughing if Sony passes.

missed opportunity if true.

No comany has bothered to do anything of the sort outside of nintendo most of these companies just sit on there hands for months on end and say and do nothing.

It's disappointing because it was always good to see the bug three go toe to toe and compare the shows after. That's half the fun.

I'll still tune in obviously but it just wasn't the same last year.

A posting doesn't need 'facts' to not to be a shit post. A shit post is a post that does nothing but contribute to console wars and shit. Me posting that it's embarrassing not to be at E3 during the year you launch a console is neither shitpost nor backhanded, it's criticism.

Meanwhile the shitpost I called out just spewed toxic fanboy shit (microsoft = irrelevant, Nintendo = nothing of significance).

Now you can show how to own it yourself. You were wrong.

Personally the company own events around E3 do nothing for me, I watch e3, stay up late... but read the Nintendo/ Sony stuff the next day ... but that’s me..

Nothing beats the trill of the E3 showings.

This sucks E3 was great because I could schedule my time around it like Christmas. Now everyone and their grandma will have events in different months. It is to much to keep track of. I don't bother with the current non E3 events unless it is hardware reveal. If your not revealing hardware or not at E3 I'm not wasting my time I'll catch up here.

They had a press conference at CES less than a week ago, but more importantly they've done 4 State of Play addresses in the last year, but you ignored me when I told you about those.

You're about to come up with some reason those addresses don't count for some reason even though though they're the same thing as Microsoft minus a man in a suit on a stage saying "please watch this next trailer".

You already replied to me. Take a nap.
And all 4 of those state of plays were terrible in fact famitsu leaked everything a good 6 hours early for all of them. Only thing sony did was run a very uniformitave movie reel that game out 0 information about anything and was just please watch this trailer alright next one.

It may be in trouble for sure. But I just can't be upset about them not going. I got to see more AA's and budget titles get some coverage at the last one. Even the youtubers and journalists I talked to discussed have a bit more time to cover other stuff versus whatever 3-4 huge titles from Sony usually dominate. So regardless of deathknells or whatever. Its been a much more interesting time for me personally.

Big shrug from me tbh.

So long as we get some substantial previews of PS5 games at their own media events or other venues, then I don't really care.

Having been apart of the AP and attended an E3 in all it's glory, from a video game fans perspective it's an absolute orgasmic experience combined with video game creators and salesman all trying to hype and boots up every game like the next GotY complete with booths filled with titty girls and free loot galore.

At least when I was there it was a glorified arcade-demo filled with misogyny at every turn. If you ever felt like you're around a bunch of dudes who have never gotten laid or know how to react around a beautiful woman with respect that's essentially the behavior permeating the show where you have a bunch of middle aged men desperately trying to take picture of a booth girl almost like a victim while vigorously jerking off in their heads over the experience.

I met some of my video game heroes (at least heroes at the time) like Peter Molyneux and Reggie (yes Nintendo-Reggie, was actually his first year)

I heard years after they were trying to desperately clean up the image of E3, perhaps that's why half the attendance is gone?

-Would also point out that the year I attended, Sony's biggest press conference was actually off-site and required additional travel to get there so Sony has traditionally always done their own thing at E3

E3 2018 - 69,200 attendees
E3 2019 - 66,100 attendees

Attendance down by 3,100 attendees = half empty?

giphy.gif

I found it overcrowded when it was at around 60,000, but I guess to some people bigger is always better... until they're stuck in line for 2 hours to play a 5 min demo.

I assume he meant half-empty from exhibitors (like Sony and EA? not being there), not attendance.

Am I the only one who reads this as an assumption from Schrier? Like he knows something that's fucked up and he's just like, Oh I can see why Sony skipped it now. Because he doesn't really say that they're not going. What's he's said is that Sony skipping would make sense.

Thats sort of what I assumed but doesn't seem correct after looking at various stories.

For example Gamespot compared the years
"The Entertainment Software Association, which organizes E3, announced that this year's show featured more than 200 exhibitors, and about a fourth of them--or around 50--were attending for the first time.

For comparison, the ESA said E3 2018 also featured more than 200 exhibitors, and it said 85 of them were attending for the first time. "

It is a bit lower but literally attendance numbers, exhibitors and newcomers don't reflect it.

If you find them boring then you don't have to watch them...

Quite a few people obviously enjoy them.

No press conferences equals more States of Play.

I rather have 10 minutes videos per month with information about Playstation, than wait 6 to 8 months for a press conference that might be good or not.

The event was painfully long (despite it covered a very small selection of games), with so many cuts in between cause they changed the stage 3-4 times for these fillers, and to set the mood for their big first party games.

Now add that to the fact that Sony doesn't give a fuck about Europe (despite they have such a presence here) so their E3 press conference have always started at 3:30-4:00 am here, making it by default very hard to watch.

Either you stay up all night watching a man with his flute and so many fillers just for a 2 minute trailer, or you miss the event.

That year i tried watching it, but as soon as it started that way i ragequitted and watched the highlights the day after.

As of result the event was probably very expensive to make but not many people enjoyed it as much as other probably cheaper events (even previous E3s from Sony) but packed with game reveals, the reason why we all tune in.
yeah not for me, gameplay for tlou2 and tsushima was the highlight of the show for a shitload of people.
i don't care if you bore me with chat, sells number and shit if you also have long gameplay video of exclusive games that looks great.

microsoft last year had a fantastic pacing but almost zero gameplay, all cg or cutscene, and nobody gives a fuck about cg trailers.

i take 1h30 min of nothing and 2-3 long gameplay videos instead of 2 crazy hours with 0 gameplay.

State of plays are no substitute for an E3 conference.

From that perspective they've all been subpar so far.

Also, E3 doesn't need to die. Make it completely digital. Each group does their presentation locally, a bunch of "directs" with online playable demos for select games. Shouldn't have to travel when literally all the big name companies have their own auditorium.

Edit: In fact make it so I can "be there" during each conference in VR.

E3 is only good for the conferences and those are better when they're not actually live conferences with awkward speeches and scripted demos anyway. Get rid of it I say. Everyone who normally does a conference should just spend a fraction of the cost and upload a video to YouTube. If you wanna go the extra mile and really follow Nintendo's lead do some Treehouse style bullshit where you stream your employees playing the games afterward.

The only thing normies like me are gonna miss out on are peoples' impressions of playable games from the show floor, but I haven't trusted game journos' opinions on gameplay in years anyway so who gives a s h i t
