Game Pass on Windows - My worst gaming experience ever!

A few months ago I bought my first gaming computer, and I got a free 3 month subscription for game pass on PC. I never bothered to activate it until yesterday. Oh my, that was the worst mistake I have ever made.

Microsoft Store is absolute garbage!

Let me explain: I only have a 20Mb connection, and I tried downloading Forza Horizon 4. It took me about 10 hours to download 75 GB. Fine, I can just leave the computer turned on.

After installing, the game wouldn't start up. It showed a window for a second or two and closed itself. I tried cleaning and reinstalling the Microsoft Store, reinstalling the Xbox App, disabling the anti-virus, reseting the game data. restarting the computer, updating drivers. Everything! One of the fixes involved reinstalling the gaming services app. And it took 1 HOUR to download 6MB. Yes! 6MB! And no, it wasn't my internet, people on the web also said it took them a lot of time to do the same.

After all the troubleshooting, I went to the game reviews page and I found some people complaining the game wouldn't start up. I thought: "Maybe the game is just broken". Okay, fine, no problem. I can try another game.

Then I wait another 3 hours to download Hellblade. What happens? Same result. F**k!

After that, I spent some more time trying to find a solution. I searched the entire internet, and I found some people with the same problem. After hours and hours of troubleshooting I thought: "Maybe I'm just unlucky today. Let me download a small game to see if it works". I then proceed to download Undertale...

Wait a minute!? It's not downloading! I then try to download another random game... Nothing?! Error 0x87e0000d. :messenger_face_steam:. I tried downloading apps from the Microsoft Store and they were downloading fine, but any game from game pass wouldn't. After that I tried to uninstall Hellblade... What happens? The game was deleted but the entry on the start menu was still there, even after a restart! And I coudn't delete it no matter what!

At that point I had no hope left. So I took a extreme measure: I reinstalled Windows 10 (but keeping all programs and files). I left home for some hours and when I came back... Everything went well. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Then I try to install Undertale and... it finally works!!!

Right now I'm downloading Hellblade again, but there's a problem... Microsoft Store still SUCKS!

What is this??? It's taking me more time than before to download Hellblade (has been three hours already), but that's not the problem. The problem is this buggy Microsoft Store is literally LYING about the download speed! And this is not the first time. There's always a bug, always!

Microsoft Store sucks and game pass relying on it is a huge mistake. I'll never subscribe to game pass on PC as long as it is tied to Microsoft Store. Gladly this time it was free, but if I had payed for it I would be asking for a refund immediately.

Update:

It's still not working...

I mean none of this even has to pass through the Microsoft Store, there's a completely isolated Xbox app on PC...

Games seem to be downloading just fine as well..

They actually are downloaded by MS Store, when downloading a game from the app open MS Store and go to the downloads and updates page. The app is only an interface for the store.

I’ve had issues with both stores. Most recent being Game Pass beta app would refuse to update Outer Worlds. Eventually I had to remove it and reinstall it.

I have multiple SSDs and have always suspected the store secretly hates installing anything unless it’s on C:

There have also been a few instances of the Microsoft store failing to update apps in the background on my machine. It quietly re-attemps until it finally succeeds. I’ve caught it in this process several times but if I didn’t look at the updates tab I’d have never known.

I would completely agree there’s something wonky with installs and updates on their store.

I also experience slow downloads with GamePass. Everything takes twice as long as it would take from anywhere else. It sucks, but I can deal with it. I survived 14.4 dial-up, I can handle this.

Aside from that, however, I have zero complaints.

I did have one game that wouldn't launch from the GP app, but I just found its executable and launched it that way. No worries.

I noticed some games like Undertale and a game called Demon's Tilt work, but Forza, Hellblade, Bridge Constructor Portal, Metal Slug X and Riptide GP: Renegade don't work at all. Actually both Bridge Constructor and Metal Slug show a error message saying "Can't open this app". All others just show a window with a logo for one or two seconds and then they vanish.

I'm disappointed, I was really looking forward to play those games.

Doesn't know the difference between MBps and Mbps then makes a ridiculous thread about Microsoft Store lying. When are we gonna have some decent moderation again on Neogaf ? Too many shit threads lately.

Cretinously credulous
Yupe, Microsoft Store is absolute garbage ass shit. It gives random errors, stops downloading midway and wont start again, wont launch games after downloading and every other error under the sun that you can imagine (sometimes launching the game would just take me to Windows store page of that game and never actually launch it. Imagine that!). Worse, there is no solution really cause most of the time it will just give the error code as you mentioned- 0x87e0000d. This is a bullshit code and the only thing we can do is try random solutions and hope something works.
I had so much trouble with Gears of war 4 and Halo Reach that I wanted to smash my PC to bits and cry....maybe.
Gamepass is a great concept, but by God does MS store ruin it.

I know the difference. Tell me, how is it possible a 20 Mbps connection is downloading at 3,9 MBps while the taskmanager shows it's actually downloading at 4 Mpbs? (the first screenshot was taken with the taskmanager right beside the download window.)

What is the language of your OS ?

I haven't had an issue with it, then again my PC is vanilla and I don't have much third party software downloaded on it.

Interesting that you have this issue. While I always sing the praises of the game pass. I will say that it seems impossible for me to download and run bloodstained ritual of the night. I have tried like 5 times to get it to download and it gets stuck at like 2% for me. Which is odd cause I have like 10 games installed right now and rotating between them.

Similar story on my end. Trying to get BF4 which came with my gpu ... after three attempts i gave up (fuck EA store). Years later tried to download Forza 5 or 6 PC demo via W10 ... had to redownload it a second time.

Ever since, i´ve enabled LTSB and never looked back. Nothing seems to have changed ...

It's Portuguese.

It's not the first time MS Store shows fake download speeds, oftentimes it's like it stops updating the value for a few seconds and then after a while it tries to catch up by showing insane download speeds. That's only one bug of many. I also hate when it says the download is pending and get stuck for a few minutes. It should at least tell me what it is doing. Is it connecting to the server? Authenticating? Waiting for other stuff to finish? It's just frustrating to use.

Are you using the Xbox (Beta)? That is where the gamepass games are supposed to be downloaded.
The app still uses the store on the backend, if the store is flaky so will the app.
I feel your pain OP, the gamepass app on Windows and the store in general is absolutely shit.
Sadly it hasn't improved much recently either.

Game Pass on PC is a great deal, but it's buggy AF tbh. They should reduce the price permanently month-to-month on the PC version until they iron the major issues out.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
It baffles me how Microsoft can fuck this up when they have decades of experience in os development and actually have a console that is capable of downloading things without problems or clunkiness.

This is why I'll never PC game. Ease of use of a console is just better than any gaming PC.

Tbh everything works if you ignore the Microsoft store. It's like saying you're never buying physical games because you had a bad experience in gamestop.

Works for me perfectly fine. Try to format your PC

Also, I Download Games with 70/80 Mbps. I have a gigabit connection, so it’s almost fullspeed. Can’t complain at all.
I think the issue is at your hand.

After installing, the game wouldn't start up. It showed a window for a second or two and closed itself. I had the same issue. The Xbox (beta) app is bugged for some people when it comes to launching games. Use the Xbox Console Companion app instead to launch the games. Halo Reach and The Outer Worlds would not launch on Xbox (beta) but worked first time with the console companion.

I've got nothing but glowing reviews for Gamepass so far, I'd like to see more games on PC Gamepass but it's cheap as fuck so I'm happy with what I'm getting for what I'm paying.

I've downloaded about 50 games since the Xbox Beta app launched, some bigger games like Rage 2, Outer Worlds, Gears 5 and Metro Exodus, some smaller like Thumper or Dead Cells and I haven't run into any issues yet. Download speeds are always above 70MB/S on my connection despite the fact I live in the center of a frozen wasteland. If I start a download for a game I'm interested in it's usually done by the time I'm ready to play. It's so painless I tend to download any games that look even remotely interesting to my big bulk drive for later use.

Only ever had a single problem with gamepass not working and that was because I didn’t let it update, when I should have, so I went through the windows store. (Halo reach)

Any other time it’s been a one click done deal. No windows store bollocks at all.

I don’t see why people have so many issues with something so basic.

Because the errors are absolutely random. A friend of mine tried to get sea of thieves working. No chance in hell. The download never worked. OS was up to date but the game never downloaded more then 500mb. We where on the same connection that time and could download without problems. Maybe there was a problem on his side but nothing that could have been diagnosed or fixed within two hours time. :/

It works for the most part but when it goes to shit it does in a blazing ball of fire.

But like others said, still beta. Hopefully MS an overhaul.

Believe it or not it's better than it used to be. But yeah, it's still got a ways to go.

It's not user error, dude. It simply doesn't work for some people, and the infamous Windows 10 error messages are incredibly unhelpful in figuring out the solution. "Something went wrong" Great, thanks Microsoft.

I’ve used it a LOT, well, my wife has more than me anyway, and neither of us ever see anything...? Very bloody weird... must be really cocky about updates and settings.

Worst ever?

You haven't been gaming long then.

You're right, GFWL was slightly worse than this.

Just slightly.

It amazes me that Microsoft, who own and develop Windows themselves, can royally fuck this up time and time again.

Just give people what they want without the bullshit , it's not that complicated.

I was thinking more like PSX memory cards bricking themselves on disc 3 of FF8, three fucking times. Fuck you memory cards.

I would happily sit and wait an hour for a 6mb download vs losing all of the game time over and over.:messenger_tears_of_joy:

Try to set the region, date settings and language to US (English) and restart. Fixed my Wolfenstein problem. After that it worked fine in my local settings. It also could be a problem with your MS account? Try another user or something like that. Read somewhere this could help.

To be fair I thought you were talking about PC gaming specifically.

The ghost of GFWL is still causing issues in 2020, so much so that Rockstar had to remove GTA IV from sale the other day:

Honestly I'd rather go back to launching DOS games via the command line before going back to the shit that was GFWL.

And now history is repeating itself with UWP with the same group of people (people who are primarily Xbox console gamers) valiantly defending it's shitness.

Time really is a flat circle.

Look at the top two rated reviews on Steam for sunset overdrive, it speaks volumes (ignore the self-plug) :

img_20200114_125335ywj0q.jpg

I bought the game again on Steam despite already owning it on Xbox and not being very fond of the game itself because I'm happy to show support for Microsoft doing the right thing as far as PC gaming is concerned.

I'd pay good fucking money to have gamepass not be tied to the shit stain that is the windows store along with it's partner in crime UWP, and I'm sure many others would. I shouldn't have to wrestle with file and folder permission settings in order to access the Metro Exodus benchmark .Exe so that I can go about optimising my settings in the most efficient way. Nor should I have to do the same thing to access .Ini files in games where things like the FOV setting is not in the options menu.

In this case you quite literally get what you pay for. It's not good enough.

The problem I had was with the Gamepass app itself not launching games but thats resolved now.

As for the store my downloads are very fast and I know it doesnt help OP but ive never had a problem with it. Its just another store.
