Jason Schreier (Kotaku Splitscreen) : "Sony will have PS5 only titles at launch"

What if they use the drastic increase in CPU for AI? It would have to be massively dumbed down. Or physics? I'm not talking about tacked on physics like PhysX, but gameplay built around that. And that's not even taking into account the massive increase in draw calls. Doing little cutbacks in animations won't cut it because the increase in CPU power is much much larger than it was last gen to this gen. Add to that fast SSDs being standard. We are talking about some very shitty ports coming to current gen consoles or massively held back games where the Ryzen cores are sitting idle most of the time. The Jaguar cores were already a massive pain in the ass this gen and no doubt held back the PS4 Pro and XB1X.

I think it will all depend on a game by game basis - games kike CoD, Fifa, Halo, Forza etc. don't need dramatic CPU power, they might, but it's not really necessary for those games to be great, they are already strongly established franchises that started their lives over a decade ago, there's little to no chance they will ever be redesigned, because how can you reinvent football of car racing for example? But for completely new IP, or AAA games that aim for pushing the technical envelope, yeah, working on them from scratch for the new hardware will greatly benefit them.

But then again, it takes 3-6 years nowadays to make such games, so MS claims are nothing short of but accurate, there's no point of making next-gen exclusives just now, when the only difference will be the graphics, resolution and framerate. Now take the upcoming TLoU2 or GoT as examples - Sony could easily postpone their release to make them PS5 exclusives, excluding all the backslash they'd get from it, but it's easily doable, but the games are waaay too far into development to redesign the mentioned AI, the physics, and so on.

Because realistically, if you change for example the AI, it might turn out that because of the enemies/NPCs behaviour all the levels need to be redesigned, or the gameplay mechanics, and so on basically the devs would have to set themselves back 2-3 years, for a game they already have been working on for 4-5 years. It's simply much better for literally everyone, the publishers, the devs, and us, the end consumers, to release those games as they are and start working from scratch on a truly next-gen titles.

Just listen to yourself. 'games like CoD, Fifa, Halo, Forza etc don't need dramatic CPU power' what?! You just don't understand how dramatic improvements in specs can bring these games to the next level and are content lapping up the same sort of shite we've had from them since around 2010.

And you say '3-6 years', you know, software development on PS5 started long before it will be released end of this year. No excuse for MS shocking lack of exclusives other than they're trying to get sales from their XB1 install base and foregoing any kind of ambition/disregarding their hardcore fans.

Anyone noticed how shitaku keeps getting info second hand instead of directly from the source.
Even with PR it seems all 3 companies avoid and ignore their asses like the plague, like rats they nibble away at others that are willing to feed them to get scoops.

Watched this a bit ago, found it interesting. I know MBG is a Sony guy (former Xbox guy), but he covers some input from DF (John Linneman) that I hadn't seen before.

People will believe any old shit just before a new gen starts

If Xbox really is doing what you are claiming, they would be promising Xbox One support for the lifetime of Scarlet.
Microsoft is only keeping the support for 1 year after Scarlet's launch. Maybe you need to ask yourself if they were serious about being pro-consumer, or they just needed an excuse for their Scarlet Exclusives being one year behind schedule.

All the talk about "scaling down", doesn't explain why MS didn't promise to do this indefinitely. Why not promise scaled down Scarlet games forever? Why only do this for 12 months, and not after?

didnt they say 2022?

Someone wrote it as "2 years" as in 2 years from now, because it made for a spicier headline. But, 2021 is when the XSX software finally comes out and it never had anything to do with being pragmatic toward customers.

So this entire thread is based on utter bollocks and is now on page 10... Sounds about right.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Doesn't every console have games exclusive to it at launch?
This isn't exactly something new

No, it's still insane to launch a next-gen system without any next-gen software and that's what it's about.

It's really not. that's just something that the pissy fanboys see as something they can use as ammo. Unlike last gen it's not going from Power PC to x86 it's going from x86 to x86, so the tools for cross gen games are way simpler. So from a business perspective developers can start the gen with 50+ million customers as opposed to a million or two day one adopters.

If you are not ready to jump in day one you can buy the game fine, but if you jump in you can do so knowing you will have a superior version with better textures, better lighting, ray tracing, higher resolutions and twice the framerate.

If you really believe that it'll hold it back, have a look below, did the 360 version of FH2 hold back the X One version?

I'm really looking forward to these PS5 games at launch that will be vastly more superior to the launch games of XSX. They are going to be utilising every new SSD and CPU power that XSX is simply not able to match due to the older hardware constraint.

Also if at launch this isn't the case, can we say then that Sony has failed? Since Microsoft is failing by having the XSX constraint by the OneS and OneX, the PS5 must have games that aren't constrained like that, and thus be superior in almost every way compared to the games on the XSX.

If you have to justify not having next-gen software during your next-gen launch, that's fine. But facts are facts - and the fact is that Microsoft just couldn't time things out properly and they also can't let Sony have a year head start.

If MS had purchased studios earlier, they'd have launch next-gen games too. And no one would be pretending that they actually want an enhanced last gen experience for a whole year because they wouldn't have to pretend it.

Which part was made up? Microsoft not having any XSX software ready for the launch is something they themselves said. They painted it as them being the good guy and making sure everyone with an Xbox doesn't get left out, but if that were true, the cutoff wouldn't be 12 months into the generation.

The truth is, I don't care that much. Cross-gen games are sweet! Sony's PS4 exclusives like TLoU2 and Ghost of Tsushima are probably going to be amazing on PS5. Halo Infinite will be awesome on XSX. But there is an assault to basic logic going on here. People lapping up some extremely see-through PR statements is annoying and it makes a normal person feel like they're in an episode of The Twilight Zone to witness.

I'm an xbox consumer and I'm pretty happy they're doing this, since I'm kinda short on money. I'll buy the Series X when it drops price a bit, since outside the US consoles are really expensive.

I really don't understand you, guys: are you really that die-hard fans of a company that you're willing to allow anti-consumer practices for the sake of exclusives? I mean... don't you even care about your consumer rights and what's best for you, and NOT for the multinational company?

I don't think Sony guys see this as anti-consumer. It's the traditional console model. It's been done this way forever, by every console. The benefit is that you get games made specifically for that console, so it justifies the expenditure. They aren't just games upscaled from a design that accommodates the previous generation hardware, but designed from the ground up for the new hardware, with its enhanced capabilities. That's pro-consumer, not anti-consumer.

If I were an Xbox guy, I'd consider offering a new piece of hardware at $500 that doesn't have any games built specifically to take advantage of that hardware ... well, I'm not going to call it "anti-consumer," because that seems like a buzzword people like to throw around ... but it doesn't seem appealing to me as a consumer. I want a company to give me a good reason to spend $500 on a new kit, especially after spending $500 just a couple years ago for something similar. I'm not seeing it.

You think all the guys & girls who upgraded from the PS360 generation late 2013 did so just to play Knack, Killzone, Dead Rising 3 & Ryse? You don't think playing Call of Duty, Fifa & Assassin's Creed in 2013 with better graphics was "appealing"? I think millions upon millions of consumers who bought on those consoles at launch precisely to experience multiplats with far better visuals would disagree.

People here are acting like the Series X offers little for investment in the first year or so, i.e. how about the biggest best-selling multiplats & Xbox exclusives with next gen graphics? Aka the whole reason people invest in a new console generation to begin with.

I grant your point about Knack not being a big system seller. But you just wait for Knack 3 on the PS5. You just wait.

Upgraded third-party multiplats is already covered by the PS5, so that's not a selling point, at least for me. I could understand how Xbox-only guys would like the idea of upgraded multiplats, although personally I think the Xbox X already does a respectable job there, so that waters down the appeal a bit.

But if that's good reason for you, go for it. I'm not speaking for everyone, just myself. For me, the lack of exclusives that appeal to me generally, the specific lack of exclusives built for the system, and the fact that I'll have a PS5 to cover multiplat upgrades -- that leaves me with little reason to spend $500 for an XSX. Maybe I'll get one in 3 or 4 years, when they've got a nice library of exclusives, including ones built specifically to take advantage of the hardware.
