Xbox Series X will be able to play Steam games. Mountains of salt required ITT

According to a new report from alleged insiders in the Xbox community, the Xbox Series X may support Steam and the Epic Games Store. The rumour currently doing the rounds essentially suggests that thew new console will have a "Windows Mode" that allows players to switch the machine's operating system to Windows 10.

No idea how reliable the source is.

I think it's bullshit, personally. I just wanted to get involved with the thread spamming. 🤷‍♂️

I mean the hardware appears capable and if this happens I would assume they partnered for sales distribution so I don't see a problem. This would greatly expand the usability of the system and peoples options for the consumption of games. Let's be honest here, these new consoles will be nothing more than closed system PC's, why not take advantage of both sides of the road?

Would be neat.... but I I don't see how that would make much sense for them. Consoles now tend to make more money through services than the actual hardware, giving people the option to buy stuff from third party stores (with free multiplayer too) just seems like giving away a ton of revenue.

People did say it just looked like a P.C when it was unveiled.

Also saw this just now, but Ladbible as the source 🤷🏻‍♂️

If it was true Will it use the same streaming tech as the Nvidia shield to play steam games? Which is basically the same as stadia but steam games from the cloud streamed to your Nvidia Box cutting out the need for a P.C

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
Its probably more likely that Xbox Series X will run on full Windows 10 but with a new 'Xbox Shell' instead of the classic shell. That kind of seems like the endgame of Xbox and there are have been many hints about that, like separating the shell from OS in insider builds. They also talked about combining Xbox and PC in the Project Scarlett reveal video.
I once talked about this to the idiots at the other sites Xbox discord group and they all laughed at me.
By default Series X will probably run like S mode and you will have to turn on full Windows mode manually.

It sounds very painful from a user perspective, having to switch between modes. Its kind of GRUB on my dual boot Win10 / Linux desktop.

Personally I don't know why you guys would want to have to deal with a desk & chair, mouse and keyboard, drivers, hackers, viruses, etc, etc.

I think it's best for you all that this doesn't happen. Who knows the horrors that await console gamers if the PC gaming gates of hell open.

That would be cool, but I dont see it happening, unless steam/epic work out something with Microsoft, but then again if the windows mode is basically a PC then they wouldn't need too? Hmmm

It would be nice for MS to just essentially come out with a subsidized gaming PC with all the freedom that comes with it, but it just doesn't make a lot of sense from their perspective. I think even having some sort of not-totally-locked-down Windows on Xbox would probably instantly jeopardize the system to being cracked. In any case, there's only a couple reasons I as a PC gamer could ever consider getting an Xbox, and that's by either having must have hostage exclusives like PS4 did (Bloodborne for me), or offering essentially the same freedom as PC when it comes to mods etc., essentially becoming a PC, but subsidized.

That would be a huge boost for the casual gamer. Still feel that most PC Gamers would still stick with PC unless they're lazy and would want the mild convenience every now and again. Hope its true.

Highly doubt it. I expect MS to continue slowly turning Xbox into a walled garden PC, not an actual PC where you have full freedom to install anything.

Yea that would be a REALLY bad business model since they make money on software moreso than hardware, I'd say it's more likely they will be open to crossplay from both.

Whats the logistics behind this? If its running RDNA and Zen it shouldn't be that hard to make happen, but the code would still not just natively work correct?

Wasn't this actually rumored awhile ago but backwards. Something along the lines of the PC grabbing the Xbox Code and able to run it through an emulator?

This really doesn't seem THAT farfetched in a long term sense. If they can basically turn the Xbox into a Windows box running a custom UI then development would go from developing on Xbox and PC to just PC. It makes sense.

This is technically possible and the sort of thing "crazy" Phil Spencer would do. Imagine having a steam app on your Xbox just like you have the EA Access app. Your steam library is there and is intigrated with all the xbox live tools. I mean this would be amazing but I bet it doesn't happen because nothing that cool ever happens.

So basically it'd be a more affordable hardware locked gaming PC. Not the worst thing to happen I guess. Still seems like a long shot.

I'd be in support of it, but don't see it happening.

Can we just have a big conference or something where all the big players go and show their technology and games? A real expo of sorts. Maybe something to to do with electronics and entertainment?

i don’t think that this would be the Right venue.

If they did something like this, I expect they would start not with Steam or EGS but with Game Pass on PC. I think they did most of the work on the OS side this gen with Xbox One, it wouldn't even be a stretch.

The implications do not match the details. There's a difference between offering native support for Steam / EGS and allowing Windows 10, which then lets you install Steam. How well will the games run?

Would definitely be a cool feature if it's fleshed out.
They could make it so that you can't buy games on there and only play your steam library. It's still a bonus for Valve because people might buy on PC then go on xbox to play and it is a cool feature for steam to say you can now play your library on your console. It's also good for MS because it means they have a massive advantage over consoles that dont do this. having said that it wont happen because nothing that brings this much joy can exist in our world.

Well my main contention isn't whether or not it would "work" due to Microsoft's or Valve's intervention . I am just curious if the games would actually function correctly or if there'd be a ton of caveats. I mean, a PC owner can buy a Steam game and still end up in a situation where they need to patch it or otherwise do some extra stuff to get it running on their system. Can we expect the XsX to fare any better? Seems like the sort of promise that looks really good during marketing and trade shows but ends up being a complete circus when it comes to implementation.

In another thread i literally said it'd be nice to see steam games on the xbox since xbox games are on pc but didnt this to happen or even a rumor to come of this.

They need something to separate them from the Ps4 somehow. And if this is done well, it can definitely help (if turns out true).
