Half-Life: Alyx Anouncement Trailer

I never really looked into the PC headsets, but last night I just had to check out some youtube videos for them. I know, Linus Tech Tips is lame, but his videos had a pretty good breakdown of the strenghts and weaknesses of each.

And in the end, surprise surprise, I want the most expensive one.

Rift S is the next best thing

It looks very sweet from the video I watched. Its pricing almost doesn't make sense as it appears to be the 2nd best package you can buy yet is only $400 compared to $1000+ for the Index.

My guess is that Valve revealed Alyx early to get people to buy up the Index at its current price and then will lower it dramatically for the actual launch of the game. And it'll still be way more expensive than the Rift S :messenger_tears_of_joy:

afaik the S has just as good bright LCD screens with almost no screendoor effect but at lower HZ. I can confirm since I've had S.
The sweet spot is very good and focal point is like 50cm so I did not needed glasses even though I am short sighted. Controllers are great and even some fingers are tracked. It's a sweet package. I will probably rebuy it for hl vr

I agree about the Rift S and especially index being top tier, but I think a great deal is the samsung. There were some deals for $200 and its a massive step up from psvr. A good middle ground unit but with budget pricing.

I recently picked up the Rift S and I'm so glad I did, it's an incredible piece of hardware. I can't believe it was only $400 for as much as you get, it feels so premium. It definitely has to be a heavy loss-leader only possible by a company backed by a monolith like Facebook.

The 3d stereo passthrough is mind blowing. Did they extended it past 5 minutes at a time? I loved setting screens in my room but 5 minute limit at launch was annoying

Oh for sure, it's a great feature. I haven't seen any limitations like that, they have a shortcut to toggle it on and off now so I don't imagine it has any time limitations. I'll give it a shot when I get home though!

I have to build a new PC before I get heavy into PC VR. My current build would leave me let down.

And while I'm sure some of the budget sets are great, I'm the kind of guy who would always wonder what I'm missing on the better quality choices.

I personally like Linus, nice personality.

Until recently, Linus declared VR pretty much "dead". Nice to see VR's perception slowly turning around.

Yeah, I don't like his hyperbolic bullshit to stand out on youtube. But, I feel like every youtuber is one-upping each other to have the dumbest looking thumbnails and most click-baiting statements, so I choose to believe he says dumb shit like that to cash in and not because he truly believed it.

Alex Kipman, the chief visionary behind HoloLens-
“Had the great privilege to play Half-Life: Alyx at Valve yesterday. Most inspiring and immersive VR game I have ever experience and I have played a few,” he shared on Twitter.

Alex Kipman, the chief visionary behind HoloLens, had some serious praise to share after trying the game just last week.

This after Phil Spencer called it "amazing" after playing it recently.

If I was a rich person I'd buy an Index and Katwalk vr or something and just straight chimp out with this game.

This could of been HL3 :/ I dont mind VR getting an AA title but considering how much effort and detail went into this...it looks amazing and totally familiar HL wise.

I of a lot of excitement for it because they of faith in VR. Do you of a VR headset? Maybe you should of one and then you can of this game too!

Valve won't do that, maybe a mod if you're lucky. Being VR exclusive is Valve's entire strategy.

I will buy the VR Version anyway but we’re money is, there is hope. Let’s see.

I remember a guy who said RE4 is GCN exclusive and he will cut his head off, if the game will get a release on a other console.

Now, RE4 is the biggest slut of all videogames with a release on.

PS2, PC, IOS, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One and NSW...

Valve could have made this game as non VR game to begin with and made way more cash. The audience for non VR is magnitudes larger.

This is a different animal they're pursuing.

VR Hardware sales will rise and already did. They can make a lot of money with the hardware too.

Sure, but it's still no where near PC/xbox/ps4. Maybe 3% overall.

What I'm saying is that VR could have an unbelievable next 5 years and still not be more than 15% of traditional gaming platforms. The disparity is just massive.

Valve knows this, they released previous half life to.the masses. This is something different. Valve already has steam , which basically makes more money than many countries in the world. They have the financial freedom to pursue things that interest them.

I am starting to feel the hype a bit... Might want to rebuy S or get index (but that price sucks).
Anyone tested both? S was the only oculus headset in which I did not needed glasses or contacts and I am shortsighted (-1.5 both eyes).
Seems to me that S focal length is about 50-70cm. While cv1 was about 2 meters I think. What is for index?

I think the Index focal length is a bit below 2 m, so it's probably comparable to cv1.

Thanks. That sucks. I've also seen comments that index has worse god rays. I think if Alyx will turn otu good, I might get S... if it will not turn out way worse than index in alyx

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
They've already said it's March, now it's a "leak" that it "might" be "early" March lol? It's still "a few weeks", if you add a couple more to those "few". Guess if it's not, it'll still be "close enough" and it will count as more things he leaked, he does say "might", like some claim he leaked the existence of the game (no). Saw his new "rules" to better his content where he'll not use people's names from now on. Guess that's to avoid situations like the Marc Laidlaw bs where he was like "huh, wtf, no" when it came to his attention that there was talk of having a falling out/bad blood with Valve during their recent ama where people inquired about it based on VNN's bs and the truth came out, dude seems to bank on them not commenting on rumours to spread fud but didn't expect folks to ask about it during an ama. Dunno why people keep promoting him, so much stuff he got wrong, though it's clear he also got some things right he just exploits that to spread clickbait misinformation more often than not. Alyx not being at the VGAs because of a lack of free locomotion making it look bad compared to Boneworks, six days later we get free locomotion shown in the Tested video (so obv they had the game days before to produce it), bullshit claims about how Alyx wouldn't even have physics if it wasn't for Boneworks (as if it's the first VR game to have physics) as if Valve would somehow forget all their physics focus in the previous game in the series and the engine itself, etc.

The game is releasing in a month, headset is not abailable and even when it is, it's 1100 euro.... I don't know about this but I would love to play it

I'm wondering how much of an uptick the other headsets will see because of lack of availability. Quest seems to be in sold out everywhere too.

It's what I get for procrastinating, I'm happy with my Vive and just wanted to upgrade to the index controllers, since this game was announced it's always sold out..
either this was the game to sell PC Gamers on VR and they are buying it like mad, or Valve is bad at restocking hardware.

Some possible spoilers later in the vid

That video waa serious cringe.

Anyhow I saw some older gameplay footage when she's on an abandoned train or subway and when you go to climb a ladder, it loads and you're on top of the train roof. There was no climbing animation or seamless transition.

HL is generally known for transitioning from one place to another seamlessly (obvious exceptions being like teleportation and whatnot) so I thought that was odd.

Looking forward until tomorrow though. I kinda hope they show direct screen footage without some schmuck flailing about in VR gear.

I hope the graphics of this game don't lose their quality if this trailer is being honest with us. It looks so pretty!
