Anime Winter Season 2020

The schedule. I don´t expect much from this season.
Kyokou Suiri´s manga starts good but it turns into a generic teen detective LN fairly fast. Runway de Waratte and Somali to Mori no Kami-sama are also ok. On to the more interesting stuff.

Dorohedoro The manga is first of all great. MAPPA isn´t living up to its Madhouse 2.0 potential on the other hand, I have no idea how good they are with CG and I don´t get what a 23 vol manga is supposed to do with 12 eps but here we are. The manga´s gore level is further an 11/10 from the start and the later volumes feature endless nudity. I wish the anime the best but i will withhold any hype till I see what I get.

Kuutei Dragons This isn´t the best of breed in the monster hunter genre, that would be Dungeon Meshi, but the manga is still a solid production. I don´t think that CG is the best fit here but the Netflix anime library desperately needs improvement so I ain´t complaining.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story The 12 ep show was all I ever wanted from this property. The new conclusion that was the 3rd film was already too much so don´t ask me what a gaiden story can bring to the table. I´ll just hope that it will look nice for a few eps due to still being a Shaft show. This is adapting a phone game btw. Yeah.

The movie/OVA scene is a wasteland this season. One Piece: Stampede is coming to Blu Ray. Those late 2019 Rohan OVAs are destined to be good and have to enter wide release... one day. Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul should be ok, I guess. I got nothing.

PS: I have been watching anime since the early-90 and rated 4009 anime entries on ANN and 2229 manga but the 2nd number is way too low. The manga library is a mess so I focus on anime.

So is this essentially saying that this season is trash and to wait for another season? I could use one show just to burn through during my lunches

Dungeon Meshi is more of a cooking manga than a monster hunting one IMO. The problem with Kuutei Dragon's was that it relied on the mangas art more than anything so the fact they made it a CGI is a headscratcher.

Side Story was made to sell the gacha game, I didn't know it was canon.

Dorohedoro will get 12 eps and 6 full-lengths OVAs manfestival manfestival . It´s what I am sticking with. I hope. I HOPE!
This is a "borderline NC-17" 23 vol manga. Netflix also got the right (Netflix anime are problematic). The last thing I want is another Blade of the Immortal 2019/20 that is in its 2nd half now. 30 Volume in, I think, 24 eps. Or 7 Seeds 2019/20. 36 volumes in 24 eps (again Netflix). Manga for adults often get fucked or only get partial adaptations. Pray for Vinland Saga.

2019 anime to keep you busy. From an ANN - Best of 2019 voting post:

So I just voted. I ended up with a Top 4 as Eiga no Osomatsu-san wasn´t on the docket and I don´t vote for entries below a “good” score. That was a 2019 film. I still have to see either Lupin film. Those are equally missing. The same goes for the 2 Rohan OVAs. Rohan would have made the list if I saw them. JoJo Part 5 lastly started in 2018 and ran though so I get why it wasn´t on the list.

1) Vinland Saga - 9/10 Anime of the year. A follow-up would be even better. Stuff like this is why I love anime/manga.

2) Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These II - 8,5/10 Not the 80s OVA but what is. I can´t see how these work as a film trilogy though.

3) Attack on Titan season 3, part 2 - 8,5/10 No 2 and 3 are interchangeable. WIT strikes again. The next season should rank fairly high on my list but the blowback will be severe.

“3,5”) Eiga no Osomatsu - 7,5/10 Overstays the it´s all a dream premise but this is a good way to leave the boys for now.

4) Ultraman - 7,5/10 A hurried improvement on the middle of the road manga. A rare Japanese superhero anime I actually like. This is the power of a good director you all.

Dororo started to run out of steam after the 1st act and collapsed by the end. The also missing Beastars gets “good” next season and may chart.

The year´s top 3 is quite strong and the movie/OVA scene was another wasteland. Not that OVAs even exist anymore outside of like DC comics films. Lol. The year´s middling shows are lastly solidly done (MHA, etc) but offer me little as I watched anime since the mid-90s.

There is a film here and this was before I saw Ride Your Wave. It would go above 3,5.

Edit: They vote on an 11 scale. "Good" is an 8/11. Whatever. These get a 7/10 on Imdb from me. 5 and 6/11 combined into a 5/10. ANN is a useful mess when it comes to credits and news in (only) the news section. They also sued to have some good articles but all those writers left.

Yes, cumbumpster/10. It´s shounen btw due to running in Dragon Age:

It has both "adult" and "shounen" in the category, and I wonder how they can get away with showing this to like young boys around maybe 9/10 years old

Hell, looking on Japanese Amazon. Their prime service lists "berserk" and "ghost in the shell: stand alone complex" with All age ratings. :messenger_mr_smith_who_are_you_going_to_call:

That's fine. I wouldn't see why not with how tied they are to Anime/Manga series.

Alternatively a Light Novel thread could be made. Preferably I'd prefer if Anime and Manga were separate threads since I'd like to openly talk about manga series like My Hero Academia without easily spoiling it for people watching the show.

So, should we split anime and manga threads then?

It has prostitution that's why

The page is correctly set up. Adult is the sex and Mature the gore tag. Both can come at once if there is no clear winner. Like in Gantz.
You can do anything you want in a manga or EU comic. Shounen just means teen boy. Devil Man is Shounen. Berserk was pitched as Shounen (that´s why the 1988 pilot is a bit different). Etc.
Even modern US comics can do Hard-R gore in a 12+ issue and have been since the 90s. Sex though... Google "Bat Penis". That comic was 17+ and fucking wrecked DC´s lunch.

That said. I suspect that the magazine/web version has no nipples and only the bound volumes do. (More of marketing tactic that censorship.) Even some Seinen does this.
K-ON, Emma, and Chi's Sweet Home are all Seinen so Demographics don´t mean shit. It´s just that women´s manga is read mostly for women while male ones are (mostly) read by all. Kodomo are legit for kids though:

Summary: Demographics are a mess and the final volume of Dorohedoro ran in Shounen magazine as the manga´s last 2 Seinen anthlogies went under. The 11/10 gore and constant nudity remained.

Beastars was advertised as children's books by Target's website before the anime started.

I also want to ask, critique the HxH manga's current arc, I'm really curious how you guys think it's going?

I saw the entire anime, read the major fight in the manga that took place (don't want to spoil it for any unaware but fans know what I'm talking about) and they were about to get on a boat some sort of yacht or something and I stopped right there. Is that arc promising?
It introduces some interesting new concepts an it’s cool to see Kurapika again but there’s way too much talking and thinking and explaining to my taste. That said, give it a shot, maybe you’ll like it.

Shounen/Seinen are just demographics Additionally, Shounen can be aimed all the way up until 20 since that's when you're considered an adult by the law. Ishuzoku Reviewers is serialized in Monthly Dragon Age which has done series like High School of the Dead, Triage X, Hensuki, Cautious Hero, etc Most of those series are aimed at teens or even early 20s tbh.

I got off the anime and picked up right after that, but put reading the current arc on hiatus until it is done. Whenever that is lol

It feels too complex to get invested in then wait months (going on years now) for what will probably be just another couple chapters before another hiatus.

Joyful Joyful mentioned the Chimera Ant arc - imagine watching a few episodes/reading a few chapters of that only to have to wait forever for a little more. Awful.

well it's the kurapika show again much like the yorknew arc if you liked that. the setup
is as complex and ambitious as the chimera ant arc imo. I'm loving it personally. just read it~
and yes the fight you spoke of might get a continuation on the boat
Wow, great post. In that case, I might have to buy the latest volume of HxH to catch up and see this arc unfold

Watching S2 of Gundam IBO... Taking like an 8 month break between seasons wasn't a great idea, still pressing on with it but damn... Visually this show IS garbage.

Also just read the Dorohedoro manga MAPPA animating projects that never needed it to begin with is just insulting. Pluto also never needed animating.

So the new Madoka anime... Is it good? Might watch it when it's done. Third movie was Urobuchi driving his own series into the ground.

What’s it about?
Somali is about Jotaro...er a golem accompanying a small child in search for her family or other humans in a world that has little to no humans left. (this is explained)

Murenase is about a human that goes to a school full of animals. It is a comedy.

You had me there. No seriously, I like the idea so I’ll download now. Hopefully the animation is good

To me, My Hero Academia might just be the best show of all time. I still remember my first time seeing All Might smash the Nomu into the stratosphere and the feels I got from Plus Ultra. The show manages to land its moments so much. It may be rocky at times but the highs are so much higher than almost every show in existence.

Watched both Sailor Moon S and Super S movies. I expected something and got nothing in return. Ikuhara's R movie might be the best one. lol.

I understand how much you like it as it’s a great show but “best show of all time” is a bit much innit?

For me? Maybe top 3 with the original Berserk and Macross. If it keeps up it's highs, I see no reason why it could not be the best show. It does what most shows can't even do in one season, and it does it in every season.

So anyone here into the "Isekai" genre?

I am in love with since i read a few korean isekais.

1. Solo Leveling

Solo_Leveling_Webtoon.png

Since a portal connecting our world to a world full of monsters and creatures of all kinds appeared, some people have acquired powers and the ability to hunt them: they are called hunters. The protagonist of the story, Sung Jin-Woo, is the weakest of the rank E hunters and barely stronger than a normal human. He is nicknamed by his fellow hunters as "the weakest". One day, he and other hunters find themselves trapped in an extremely dangerous dungeon, and only a few of them survive and manage to escape. Sung Jin-Woo himself hardly survives and is the only one who completes all the trials in this dungeon. He then turns into a "player" who can now see an interface showing him quests. Will he succeed in becoming the most powerful hunter?

2. Hardcore Leveling Warrior

v7wsOmY.png

The story centers around Hardcore leveling Warrior, who is the number one ranked player in the game, with maxed out levels and stats to match, until he gets killed by a mysterious woman and goes back to being level one.

3. Second Life Ranker

Yeon-woo had a twin brother who disappeared five years ago. One day, a pocket watch left by his brother returned to his possession. Inside, he found a hidden diary in which was recorded “By the time you hear this, I guess I will be already dead….”

Obelisk, the Tower of the Sun God, a world where several universes and dimensions intersect. In this world, his brother had fallen victim to betrayal while climbing up the tower. After learning the truth, Yeon-woo decided to climb the tower along with his brother’s diary.

“From now on, I am Jeong-woo Cha.”

It's funny, when I started getting into anime around 2007 my first thought was, "we need more fantasy!" Like you had Berserk, Inuyasha, Escaflowne, Record of Lodoss War, Slayers, and a few others, but that was about it at the time.

Now it's fucking everywhere, and I skip most of them because I just wish the genre showed more variety. Really just Re:Zero, No Game No Life, and Konosuba have impressed me in terms of fantasy anime this decade. I'm halfway through Cautious Hero and that one is decent, and I heard that Bookworm one wasn't bad. But too many others are way too similar, like I know Cheat Magician and another one (can't remember its name) are apparently way too identical, and likewise there was that anime a few years ago about a guy getting sucked into a fantasy world but the catch is he has his smartphone.....except this particular anime came out AFTER In Another World with my Smartphone.

Like, I've heard at least one light novel publishing company has actually banned any isekai entries from being allowed into their light novel contests and I can't exactly blame them. Like, Gigguk recently did a video talking about the fall of mecha anime and how in 2019 (not counting movies) there were only 3 mecha anime in the entire year which is half of the isekai airing that season. That's insane.

If more isekai tried a really unique premise like No Game No Life or having a more psychological approach and bigger worldbuilding like Re:Zero, I'd be checking more of them out. For those who enjoy most of them, hey more power to you, but it's just funny how a decade can change me from, "we need way more of this!" to "uh, okay, I'm good for now, like BEYOND good."

I mean, imagine if Digimon never existed (or Monster Rancher as that was similar) and then suddenly this year Digimon Adventure 01 started airing. It'd be the most unique isekai we'd seen in a while. That's kind of what I mean, hell stop making it just one guy who gets transported, since anime has such a hard-on for high school, make it the entire student body and staff! Then split them up and see where they all go, some become heroes, some stay more neutral, and some go evil. You could do some fun shit, like maybe have the janitor whose life was at rock bottom find he can use magic now and is living a far happier life. The nerd who was always picked on can't use magic or fight but uses his modern knowledge to quickly gain a lot of money and becomes the head of a badass mercenary company. And the student council president is nearly identical to a long lost princess and now she's royalty and has to use her only developing leadership skills to now help run an entire country. Then when you reach the end of the series make it a bittersweet ending with some characters going back to our world and some staying behind. Like, if 95+% of fantasy anime just HAVE to be isekai, then actually use the concept to its full potential instead of always just transporting a MC whose either "Kirito clone #82" or "edgy edgelord MC" as it feels that's the usual variety we get.

Sorry, just frustrated when I feel this genre has much more potential than is being utilized. But it's okay, Re:Zero Season 2 is almost upon us. I'll be in my happy place soon.

This is probably not the place to ask, but... where could i find someone to translate a really short 7 page manga?
There's a really obscure fan-made manga about a game, and i would like to redraw it and put into english.
If anyone can help, thanks in advance.
