PlayStation VR Thread 2: Reloaded

I'm still sitting on copies of Apex Construct, Blood & Truth, and Deracine. I've got some VR to play soon. I don't have high expectations for Deracine, but i got a good deal on it and was in a disc-collecting mood.

From the Show Us Your PlayStation 2019 Wrap-Up & Get Rewards! thread, we can see how many hours we have put into PSVR during last year. What's yours?

I reckon No Man's Sky was the main culprit for at least a good third of those hours in VR.

Mine was only like 112 or something. I have like 5 VR games in my backlog right now, so I just slept on it too much in 2019.

I've been keeping an eye out on Ebay for a reasonably-priced physical copy of the Rick and Morty game. I finally was able to snag one for about $20 shipped. The prices were falling on it in general, but it's been absurdly expensive.

So when I finally finish Death Stranding and get to start Ori, I have some PSVR waiting for me.

  • Blood & Truth
  • Rick and Morty
  • Apex Construct
  • The Persistence
  • Deracine
I think I have been buying too many games I can't play yet lol

I also picked up a cheap, but brand new, copy of The Inpatient. When it's like $9 brand new, it's hard to pass up, though I know it's not supposed to be very good.

If it's as bad as Bravo Team was, that $9 could have gone to Wendy's or something instead.

I don't like saying this, but I'm not really feeling Blood & Truth so far. You can tell a lot of effort went into it and the people who made it were trying, but it's just not gripping me. I finished the museum section and am out of the safe house and ready to start the next shooting part.

I don't mind the node stuff and using X and O to go left and right feels intuitive enough. Shooting feels fine as well. I like spotting secrets along the way to get points that go toward weapon mods. But, overall, the story stuff is falling really flat for me.

And it feels kinda "early VR-ish" when there are long segments where you are supposed to be amazed by a room full of lights that change when you wave your hands or a paint gun that you're using to shoot paint onto walls. If this were one of my early experiences in VR, don't get me wrong, I would have thought it was kinda cool.

There are some cool little parts like the DJ booth where I'm cracking up, but there's a ton of poorly-paced stuff in between and the gameplay itself feels a little stiff. I think I was just expecting a more robust game here, but it's more of a VR experience than anything.

I found it so easy, felt I was sleep walking through it. Since then there is a hard patch apparently

I decided to switch things up and try out Deracine. I've done the first real "epoch" so far and I am enjoying it way more than Blood & Truth. It's basically VR Myst in a simplified form.

Having no expectations or really even knowing what the game would be may be helping my impressions so far but I'm actually looking forward to playing some more.

I finished Deracine, and damn was that a weird one! If you don't know, it's from the developers behind the Dark Souls games (From Software). You will find some pretty familiar sounding music and sound effects along with a similar way that lore is doled out throughout gameplay.

It's essentially a point-and-click adventure kind of game like Myst, but in VR. It's very bizarre and it gets dark in ways you wouldn't quite expect for a game that's about you being a faerie. I got it for $10 and really enjoyed it.

I have been playing Apex Construct for the last couple nights. I think playing on Hard is a bit of a mistake. The controls are very clunky when you get to a point where timing, precise aim, movement, and arrow swapping becomes necessary all at the same time.

It has some good elements to it, but I'm getting a bit frustrated with it now and may not even finish it.

I get the feeling that much of that could be alleviated by simply having analog sticks on the Moves.

After getting a rift s, you see how far behind the psvr is

It's basic entry level, and for the price u can't complain, but most games are held back by its lack luster resolution and move controllers.

Can't wait to see what psvr 2 brings

Definitely. You have to be able to back up while aiming the bow, which is physically impossible since you have to point backwards to move backwards.

It worked better in Skyrim since enemies didn't just rush up into your face and walk through you to be behind you. The AI in this game is pretty rudimentary. Skyrim also added a button for back strafing at some point.

Oh a whim, I decided to pop No Man's Sky back in. Holy shit is it blurry in VR :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I just didn't remember it being that bad the last time I tried it. My brain could probably get used to it, but I noped out kinda quick.

It'll be one of the first games I play in VR when the PS5 comes out.

It is blurry, but what an experience. Nothing beats walking up to ships and seeing their actual size. Same with flying low and looking out of the cockpit.

As I was planet hopping I had pirates jumping in right above me. To look up and see ships and make strategic manouvers to survive make this game what it is.

I really liked it. It has an oldschool feel to it, but definitely has alot of charm.
I kept looking for good deals on it over time and finally Amazon came through. For me, $15 is a good point for me to at least try something. Worst case scenario, I sell it and get my money back. I'm just on the hunt lately for lesser talked about gems for PSVR because some of the big ones that got hyped up have underwhelmed for me a little bit.

After a few smaller budget games, I went back to working on the platinum for Astrobot. It's still surprising how much higher quality this game is than many PSVR games.

And it just works. Being controller-based certainly helps, but also it's like nothing gets in the way technically. Play in any light, any position, ect. You just don't have to overthink it like most PSVR experiences.

I fired up my launch PSVR headset over the weekend for the first time in forever only to find that the textured coating on the headband has started peeling. I always wiped the headset down after I was done, so it’s a bummer to still see deterioration. Sucks that those pads can’t be removed and potentially replaced like the rubber gasket that hugs your face.

Anyone else’s headset having similar wear and tear?

Mine has completely peeled out. I removed the remaining spots of coating with my hands and I don't feel any difference while wearing it.
