Noisy neighbors

So I live in an apartment complex and I can clearly hear what's going on in the apartments directly next to mine. It just so happens that where my bedroom is, the bedroom of the apartment next to me is also right there. So there is literally only 5 or so feet and a wall in between me and the neighbors making loud, aggressive, passionate, steamy, screaming at the top of their lungs coitus.

This started the first night I moved in 🤦‍♂️

That was about 1.5 years ago. Since then I have endured parties, fireworks literally right outside my porch, gunshots (there was a double homicide the first month I moved in), an obnoxiously loud Spanish themed Christmas, guys that feel it necessary to rap loudly along with their iPod at 2 in the morning while strolling through the complex, some crazy bitch in an apartment across from mine that is constantly arguing and fighting with people she lives with and others on the phone annnnnd to top it all off I just now heard one of my neighbors singing like she was praising almighty bajesus in a sweaty church choir on Sunday morning (no literally it was like straight out of sister act).

I kind of have to sit back and laugh at this most of the time and I truly have just gotten used to it at this point. At least I live in my own apartment and don't have to deal with room mates 🤷‍♂️

Share your stories of noisy neighbors

I lived in a small studio for a little over two years. It loooked like it was originally designed as a small home but they cut it into four units to make more money in the long run. The chick upstairs was so fucking loud. It would sound like she was banging a hammer on her floor, which happened to be hardwood floor (carpet would have been so much less noisy. Upstairs units in cramped places shouldn’t have hardwood floors imo).

she wouldn’t just walk around she would stomp. It would reverberate through the walls, I would feel it in my kitchen. It seemed to happen commonly around 2:30 every morning

It would never end. I never complained or anything, mostly because I’m a pussy, but damn man

I used to live in an apartment with a noisy neighbour. He was unemployed and stay at home all the time. He was often up all night rummaging around and shouting - alway shouting or talking loudly to what I assume was to somebody on the phone or his cat. (He lived alone with a cat and never, from what I could see, ever had anyone to visit him.

Sometimes to drown out his disconcerting tyraids, I would plug in and play my electric Guitar. He would then proceed to bang on the wall, but it was tough to hear over my messy rendition of metallica’s master of puppets.

One day he came and furiously banged on my door. He was obviously intoxicated. He accused me of stealing his cat, “Blue”.Naturally, I refuted his boarish claims. His temper flared even hotter and told me he would kill me, if he found out I had his cat. After he finally left, I fell into my lazyboy, exhausted from the exchange. “We really need to move.” I said to my roomate, who, like the coward he is, remained hidden in his room, during the entire ordeal. It was then, that Blue decided to jump up on my lap and rubbed his head lovingly against my hand. Instantly, my anxiety began to reced. “Yes”, I said to my roommate and Blue, the cat, “it’s definitely time to move.”

I feel your pain OP. I'm planning to buy a house soon and this is my last month in my apartment.
I've had all kinds of neighbors over the past 7 years. Loud music, singing, slamming things, barking dogs, and much more. Neighbors backing into my car, cars/motorcycles revving their engines, car alarms going off at 3am, etc...
I've heard it all and once I'm out of here I plan to never live in an apartment again.
2019 was especially annoying... I had neighbors that would be up all throughout the night and it was tough to sleep because I could constantly hear them slamming things, stomping, their dog barking, etc...
Never again.

No shootouts at my complex, but I'm in similar situation I would hear the neighbors get it on early in the morning waking me up, Now they keep me up at night the crying new born and their arguing. It feels like we are in the same room.

Only experience I had with a noisy neighbor was someone who revved his motorcycle engine super loud EVERY. SINGLE. MORNING. for a few months. Apparently he woke people up just about every morning.

I will never live in an apartment ever again. My last time my downstairs neighbors smoked inside and we could smell it in our apartment. Management did not give a fuck no matter how much we bitched. And this was right after our daughter was born. Fuck the apartment life. There are ZERO benefits.

I forgot to add that in this same apartment we could hear the guy nextdoor beat the fuck out of his girlfriend. Called the cops multiple times but she never pressed charges.

yeah the neighbors smoke weed next door and my apartment always reeks of it. however i used to be big stoner, and i want to smoke again, just taking a break for now, so i dont mind it too much. but still, when i set up air fresheners and want my place to smell like fresh laundry but it winds up smelling like a just hot boxed a car, that kind of sucks.

crazy about the girl getting beat up story though. ill never understand how people justify putting up with that. cool of you to try and do something about it though.

Bit of a controversial one.

I lived in a flat with thin walls, and one neighbour would lock his dog in the kitchen (on the other side of our living room wall) and leave it in there for hours on end. The poor dog would howl and bark constantly (literally constantly).

I left a note but he ignored it (the neighbour, not the dog!). I knocked on his door on a few occasions, but he was either out or refused to answer.

Eventually I bought a dog whistle, and would use it every time it started barking. Eventually it would shut up, and generally stopped barking. Essentially I trained this guy’s dog from the other side of a wall.

Controversial because some friends think it would have confused the dog and only add to its agitated state. Not sure if that was true but it certainly wasn’t my intention to cause additional suffering. I just wanted it to shut up, and it did.

i have the same fucking problem with the dog in the apartment right under me. thankfully i cant hear it as clearly compared to your situation, but still it will literally go for hours and hours. forgot to mention in my OP bc there so much noise int he place ive tuned that dog out lmao

ill have to try to dog whistle!

I had the whistle permanently on the arm of my chair. Every time it barked I’d calmly pick it up and use it. The great thing is that they’re virtually silent to human ears.

It sounds like you’ve approached your situation with a pretty zen attitude. Hope things improve.

I would literally kill neighbors like that living in a my apt complex.

Only thing I can add is in the summer time my next door neighbor likes to mow his lawn at like 7AM .
Buy a pair of good earplugs , it doesn‘t fix anything but helps mask the noise.

maybe, you know, he's got connections?

jokes aside, those are annoying as hell. even as someone who used to sleep pretty late at night it would get on my nerves. I have a neighbor who would on the weekend do these karaoke party at home and even if I have my windows close I can hear them. for the most part they would stop around 11 or 12 at night, but I've had to call the cops on them twice because they were still being really loud after stopping the music at 1am. personally I don't mind since I slept pretty late back then but I know there's like an elderly couple living right across them and they were really nice, so I try to watch out for them too because I know they won't call the cops on them.

I live a diagonal city block away from a 24 hour gas station. There is a decently thick layer of trees in between the businesses and the residential area. Regardless, every night from about 7pm til about 1:30am there are 5 to 10 minute stints of LOUD AS FUCK BASS shaking the interior of our house from douchebags blasting thier music while they pump gas or park in the back lot to smoke weed. Calling the cops is pointless since they people have usually moved on by the time they would show up. I know signs would be ignored. This spring I'm probably going to dig a foundation along the back of our property and put up a cinder block wall to block the noise. It isn't going to be cheap, but I don't have much choice. It sucks a lot since it is otherwise a completely quiet neighborhood.

Yeah, we could hear the woman screaming "help me" but she would start bawling and not press charges while he was in handcuffs outside. So dumb.

My neighbors appear to work late, arrive home at about 9:00pm. Crank their music and stay up till 2-3am.

their living room is across from my bedroom and I swear to god they setup their speakers right against where my bed is.

the music isn’t so bad, but the base is horrible. If they turn it up it shakes my entire bedroom and makes me nauseous. If they turn it on at all I can’t sleep a wink.

There were times where I was in full zombie mode at work and couldn’t even think properly because I had like 10 hours of sleep for an entire week.

It took months of me complaining to them, complaining to the HSA. Pounding their front door at 1am etc.

Finally the’ve mostly started turning it off at 10pm each night (the HOA required time). And they’re like 95% compliment.

I have ptsd now. when I’m driving and someone pulls up near me with mad base in their car I can feel my body tense and my stress levels rise.

its fucking nuts.

What's worse if you do end up asking them to walk a little more softly they will somehow take that as an insult and start to stomp on purpose.

I lived beneath a guy that seemed like he was trying to put a hole in his floor when he would walk around -- Things would fall off of my walls when he was walking through his apartment. After a few months I went up and asked him if he could try walking a bit more softly - Nope, the foot falls got louder. Then a few weeks later my car was keyed up. The worst part is I know I could've EASILY kicked the shit out of the guy, I just didn't want to have to go to jail. I ended up breaking the lease. Thankfully the management team at this complex was REALLY understanding and let me out of the lease without any penalties... Actually, I think I had to pay one month's rent as penalty (it was worth it to get out of the apartment).

I don't blame you for not saying anything, though. Who knows who she knows. You might've ended up with an aluminum bat to the back of your head for your troubles.

My neighbors in the apartment below me brought thier kid a scooter and he just goes up and down the apartment for hours. This scooter had hard wheels on a hard tiled floor and the sound travels through the building. But in their apartment it does not sound loud. He was doing that until 10PM last night. Even though just two days ago she agreed that he would not do it past six and I didn't care how much he did it in the day but it keeps me awake when I'm trying to sleep.

Just tie a rope across the hall, problem solved.

...an obnoxiously loud Spanish themed Christmas...

so, an update on the obnoxiously loud spanish neighbors.

last night, around 11:00pm, I'm laying in bed trying to fall asleep. I was relatively tired so I thought, "hey, should be easy to zonk out and get a good nights sleep, sounds nice :)" it was was also a cool, breezy 70 degrees outside. so I opened up the windows, turned the a/c off and hit the hay.

not even 5 FUCKING MINUTES LATER, spanish grandma comes staggering out of her apartment, drunk as fuck, apparently chooses the tennis court as an appropriate soap box, and proceeds to scream about jesus at the top of her lungs for 30 mother fuckin minutes

for a half hour this bitch is screaming "JESUUUUUUUU, JESUUUUUUUUU, MY LORD I LOVE YOOOUUUU... *incoherent babbling* EVERYONE, COME OUT OF YOUR APARTMENTS, GET ON YOUR KNEES. COME OUT HERE RIGHT NOW!" blah, blah, blah and on and on and on...

i seriously considered walking down there, getting right in her face and screaming "SHUT! THE FUCK! UUUUP!!!"

but im a sucker and far too kind... plus she was so drunk it probably wouldnt have changed a thing.

fuck you noisy neighbors

fuck you

Neighbours are the worst. The dude in the flat next to me is constantly listening to shit with a heavy bass that goes straight through the wall, but it's also just loud in general. I've heard him listening to porn. How loud is your porn that I hear it through the wall? Buy some damn headphones. There's also some crazy lady in my building who will start shouting almost every evening and doing loud metal hammering sounds. It's a few floors up, have no idea who it is, but she sounds extremely pissed off each time. Poor whoever is on the end of that.

There is a new family next to me now, and their kids are very fond of smashing the metal balcony which is shared with my apartment. I have twice now went outside to bitch at them while they were banging it for extended periods, like 10 minutes of non stop banging on a thing that reverberates like crazy. I am blown away that more people aren't going out on their balconies and giving them shit for this, it reverberates so loudly you can hear it anywhere in your apartment if you are adjacent to them.

Both times I went outside to bitch it was just this little girl like maybe 5, I'm like "can you please stop hitting this metal, it's extremely loud....", and she just goes "ok" and kind of looks dejected, then I feel bad because really I want to chew out the parents for either not being there or sitting back and allowing this to happen every goddamn day for extended lengths of time.

It really gets to you. I have to deal with inconsiderate assholes all day every day, it's super loud and annoying people at work, then super loud and annoying asshole neighbours all night and I'm honestly surprised I haven't snapped yet. Cities were a mistake.

I lived in a day-basement apartment in an old Victorian home when I lived in the Bay and there was a very nice lesbian couple that lived above me but all the memes about people moving furniture and walking on wooden floors wearing cloggs while learning to tap dance were true. Thankfully it never really went past 10pm.

Thankfully I own a house now and have at least a good 10ft from my neighbor. There were some problem with his kids leaving his dog outside and it would bark all night (hes a firefighter so wasnt always at home) but thats worked itself out already. For the most part I have pretty chill neighbors right now.

have you considered
Moving to a new building
so that you can rest

lol, yes of course i have, but itd just be the same shit or worse in a different building. even with the possibility of it being better, it's not worth the risk of moving somewhere even worse. like a "grass is not always greener" scenario

I will never ever live in an apartment again unless it's because I'm waiting on my house to be built.

Apartments are a big scam. They're overpriced to begin with, and they're lousy at enforcing any rules. What's worst about them is that you get two distinct groups of people cohabitating in these buildings. The first group are the ones paying to live there who are considerate of their living space and take pride in how they live. The other group doesn't care one iota because it's either being covered by the government for them or is they're just failing to make rent but their state's housing laws grant them the right to stay until they can forcefully evicted. That includes electric, water, and trash at the landlord's expense.

My first step in escaping that hell involved buying a house in a subdivision with an HOA. It was moderately better, but there were still weekly instances of loud bass coming from some neighbor a couple of streets over. So I sold at a nice profit and got some acreage with plenty of space around me and plenty of trees that absorb the surrounding sound. This is the way to go, GAF, if you never want to hear someone else's bass ever again.

Pounding their front door at 1am etc.

It's funny how this never seems to work. It's the first thing people tell you to do, and it almost always has the opposite effect I find.

People live next to me on one side with kids, occasionally I would bang on the wall if the kids were doing laps against the wall that is adjacent to me for extended periods (like that's literally what it sounds like, they're running laps back and forth along the length of the wall), and they would either do nothing, or bang the wall back. Like there is a huge grass field 20 seconds away, they're on the second floor and it's a walkup - go the fuck outside if you want to run a marathon in this small apartment.

The guy on the other side of me blasts music really loud, and when I go over to their apartment to give them shit, they don't answer the door. One time I went over and after I knocked, the guy just came to the door and locked it. I've had the police over there twice, and they've finally slowed it down a bit, but before that, they always pushed back harder if I banged on the wall or something.

I swear I've had fantasies about kidnapping these kinds of people and subjecting them to prolonged annoying noises. This shit drives you batty.

The last straw for me was in that subdivision with the neighbor a couple of rows over. I had just gotten home from a road-trip. It was a Sunday afternoon. All of a sudden, I started hearing loud thumping music like I hadn't heard before in my neighborhood. It wasn't any of my neighbors. This guy was 2 blocks away, garage door wide open and music blaring, grilling in his driveway. I knew I shouldn't have gone over, but I couldn't help it. It led to a Rick Grimes-style stand off that ended with him telling me he would keep an eye out for me (a threat) and me insisting that he better (I knew where the SOB sleeps at night). I hope he did. I hope he still does...

Neighbors make home ownership feel kinda worthless. Keep good fences and good boundaries. It's the only way.

has OP called the cops yet
Called them on my neighbors recently, haven't had to hear their shitty dembow reggae since. They even insisted that they were legally allowed to blast their music. Got threatened with a $300 fine.
Of course, they know it was me, cuz when I knocked and could hear them gazing through the peephole (refusing to answer) I shouted at them that I was gonna call the cops.

FINAL UPDATE

so looks like im finally moving out of this POS apartment complex on july 1st. my dad divorced my mom and she found a new house to rent, so im moving into a real house with her. its nice house, nice neighborhood... but the important part is its not in "the hood", which is where i am now. daytona, if you didnt know this, is a ghetto fuckin shit hole. never move here, unless ya got not other choice.

the neighbors who were having loud sex moved out a while back, and replaced by an asshole who yawned so fucking loud could i could hear him do it multiple times per night, from like 10pm to 1 in the morning, every fucking night, until he passed out. WHO THE FUCK YAWNS THAT LOUD!? after months of that i literally started banging on the wall as loud as i could everytime he did it until he got the message and stopped (i was surprised but im almost certain he figured out i could hear him and just stopped one day..... so thats kind of a victory i suppose). he moved out eventually anyway, but my god man you people who yawn like you think your some sort of a lion or gorilla need to shut the fuck up. its so obnoxious and unnecessary

spanish grandma hasnt got wasted and preached to the complex again (from the tennis courts :messenger_tears_of_joy:), but i still hear her out there screaming for her dogs. 2 yappy poodles that she doesnt keep on a leash so when they get lost she walks around the complex in her moo moo for 25 minutes screaming their names until they find their way back, hopefully not getting hit by a car in the process. as far as i am aware, they dont pick up their dog's poop just like everyone else in this complex. so thats awesome...

the bitch across the other side of the tennis court stopped coming outside and screaming into her phone for the whole hood to hear, but still gets on one once in a while. like seriously, your on the phone a good 25 yards away from me, you shouldnt need to talk so loud that i can hear you. i cant imagine how much of a headache the person on the other end of the line has from your incessant, karen crying. jesus wtf, definitely not going to miss this bitch

homie that used to blast his rap at one in the morning as he walked past my apartment, and rapped along with the lyrics, stopped doing that a while back. however he has been replaced by some kind of a dance team of what looks and sounds like high schoolers who ONLY gather at like midnight or 1 in the morning at the tennis courts and are loud as fuck. they are doing some variant of "stomp" and slapping hands and chanting some kind of shit. think of like 'paddy cake" or those hands slap things that kids do, but turned up to 11. and theyd be out there for an hour or two in the middle of the night... not gonna miss that shit...

what else... oh yeah and the neighbors below me i guess are kids right out of highschool, and when they moved in they had a party. but you could tell it was like the first night they had the apartment so there was no furnitue or anything moved in yet, but they still had a party bc they are highschool shit heads and had no where else to go i suppose. these motherfuckers stayed up aaaallll night running around the unit, screaming, yelling, playing what sounded like hide and go seek in the dark, and just being assholes to every neighbor around them. after a few weeks of that shit the neighbor down stairs had enough and i heard him come out and give him a piece of his mind. which i was very happy about bc im too nice to say anything... yeah not gonna miss these assholes

and on and on and on.

never... i repeat... NEVER EVER EVER live in an apartment complex in the ghetto if you can avoid it. it will be one of the worst experiences of your life and the money you save will not be worth it.

*sigh* now lets hope the neighbors in the house im moving into arent too nosey/friendly. its going to be tough for me to get out of the habit of not looking your neighbors in the eye for fear you might get jumped, and since im living with my mom i need to try and be friendly with them, in case i need them to help us with something.

well thats it. sorry for the bump and text book of a post, but i had to rant one last time about the god awful shit hole in this god awful shit town. looking forward to new horizons a month from now, which also happens to be my 4 years sober anniversary. maybe ill celebrate with a drink :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Port Orange, thank Christ. A little harder to get around because of traffic but as long you stay off dunlawton it’s not too bad. I grew up there fortunately, so I know all the shortcuts
