You probably like the visual style better MGS PS2, I'm talking about the game engine itself. I can easily tell that the Twin Snakes has better textures and is cleaner due to improvements in the engine.

MGS3 is just too good - but for me its MGS1 for the psx. Theres a constant stream of legendary scenes.
Regardless, I love the series to death and replay it all the time from MG1/2, MGS1-V+Peace Walker.

I love all the Kojima-directed games, and I have a very soft spot for MGS4, but it's a toss up between MGS1 and MGS3, with the latter getting my vote since it iterated on everything that made MGS1 great. It's one of the great adventures in gaming and when I replayed Subsistence on Vita (which was awesome), I was surprised how many of the lines I remember.

"This is war, Major. A Cold War. Fought with information and espionage. We must root out spies wherever they hide. It is kill or be killed. Potential threats must be weeded out. Your feelings are a menace to the unity of our organization."

I definitely do prefer the visual style. I can’t comment on improvements on the engine because i havent played TTS since release and have only seen dolphin emulated runs since then. Our conversation led me to this thread cause I wanted to know TTS’s frame-rate.

From the screen shots I’d have to still say MGS2 looks better graphically, but again, Im going by photos. And people in that thread believe that the frame rate is smoother on MGS2. I think I’m going to pick up a physical copy of TTS, and see for myself. As of right now, I can’t see any advantage the gamecube remake has over the ps2 sequel, but that’s just me. I do think MGS2 looks better than MGS3 as well. Something about the sterile environment and running 60fps looks pleasing.

Just played the 1st one and I think it's great, among other games that I played it's definitely a game that you don't wanna miss.

Glad to see some love for the Ac!d spinoff series on the PSP.

For those curious on the AC!D series:

(Acid2 is the better game. Quality of life improvements, the story doesn’t feel convoluted, and it has style.

Also should mention that Acid2 bombed, hard. This is unfortunate because we never got a third game, and Shinta Nojiri eventually left after helping the team meet their deadline for MGS4. Nojiri worked on both Acid games, was the director for Ghost Babel, and was the lead level designer for the Tanker mission in MGS2. The last game he worked on at Konami before leaving was CastleVania Harmony of Despair.

There was a mobile port of the first Acid, and I wish we had a true port to iOS devices and that both game were made available to download on PSN).

Man I’ve been on the fence for a while on getting a PS Vita and if they had both Ac!d games on PSN to download on the vita, I’d be more inclined to get that handheld.

isn't twin snakes the remake of meteal gear solid on ps1 that came out on the gamecube? How would the ps1 verion get more votes when the gamecube version was the same game but updated

Not only that but why didn't MGS2 and 3 see a release on the Cube? Forget the portables, hell neither did the Wii or Wii U get any further instalments....

I think this shows better that Twin Snakes (left) is generally cleaner with better shadows and lighting than MGS2. The modeling is also smoother which is to be expected since the PS2 known for its heavy aliasing in general.

The artstyle of TS however has a sleek flat gradient look though, so you may prefer that less than MGS2's artstyle which doesn't do that and almost does the opposite. I notice a few other GameCubes games have that kind of style, you can even find variations of that style in several Dreamcast games, especially arcade ports.

While TT has better texturing than MGS2 in many areas the artstyle can make that not seem obvious. if you look at say, the top of the shelves behind snake or the two frames around both glass windows, also behind snake, they seem like they are more flat and shaded than textured, where on MGS2 on the right, if you look at the window frame, or those bottom pillars, they aren't as clean or shades, but they seem like they have more texturing that's more in your face, while not having that sleek flat look.

You can also notice this some what with the floors. I can definitely see why someone wouldn't like the artstyle of TT. Although it's much better in motion. The cutscenes are inconsistent though, some are great and some are what?

When you’re referring to the inconsistent cutscenes, you’re still talking about graphics?

There were some unique properties on the PS2 that are hard to replicate on the Gamecube. Some of MGS2 uses the PS2 hardware for certain features and effects for the engine. This is likely why The Twin Snakes exists in the first place, to make up for a lack of MGS2. The amount of time and effort to figure it out wasn't worth it for Konami.

For the Xbox however, it had an architecture with depth that made it easier to deal with, and any discrepancies could be resolved via software through it's raw power. As for the Twin Snakes, Kojimas poor excuse for excluding i from the Wii U, and the PS3/360 collections is because it's not canon, though it's just a remake from the first game. I'm not sure that game will ever be released again at this point.

Ah, so like the intro with the colonel in the submarine for example (before Snake’s appearance) [/MEDIA]

If you're talking about the intro to TS yes. But there are several cutscenes that look great in the game and some that look very rough like that picture of Otacon guy posted above, there are cutscenes where he looks better and the hair is more detailed.

To be fair this is also true for MGS2, but the gaps in quality are more random and larger in TS than in MGS2 where there are some cutscenes that aren't too good, but the good cutscenes aren't 300 miles better.

No, because the only reason I’m asking is because the complaint you hear about the cutscenes is never that graphically they’re inconsistent but rather they’re bombastic. But you’re right, some TTS cutscenes do seem uglier than others.

Too many kids on here that were too young to play MGS, the first MGS, when it was FIRST RELEASED.

It was mindblowing at the time on PS1. A real landmark release.

That being said, MGS3 is the best of the series, a perfectly distilled vision of MG at its finest.

MGS4 was shit, so boring and poor art direction.

Looking back they all have issues.. but i take MGS1 and MGS3 as its own complete story and its good (MGS 3 the second version with the playable camera view lol)

My Objective Vote: Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance
My Nostalgia Vote: Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
My Subjective Vote: Metal Gear Solid 4 (it had by far the best gameplay IMO... maybe 5 was a bit better in some ways but worse in others)

I started playing MGSV after getting it from Games with Gold and I found the controls horrible. There's just no excuse for that these days.
Don't think I'll be playing it again.

I voted MGS3. Not only the best Metal Gear game, but among the best games I have ever played. Excellent designed bosses and boss fights, the best ever done. Excellent gameplay between boss fights, the action and pacing. I loved the outside environments. One of the few games I ever played that hooked me early and kept me mesmerized from beginning to end.

Metal Gear Rising is the best Metal Gear! And the final fight against Senator Armstrong is the best boss fight in any video game ever ;)

That TTS pic is from emulator with higher resolution.

MGS1>MGS3>MGS2>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>others

MGS1 kept things in check, didn't try to overly convolute things and was on point in terms of its themes and message. Music was awesome and the game just felt like this perfectly balanced somewhat cheesy 90s action/thriller. MGS2 and MGS3 weakened the sense of realism a bit, but had big jumps in terms of gameplay, albeit that also changed the nature of how you played the game. MGS2 was really narratively ambitious and MGS3 was a great cold war style 007 tribute, although both had various flaws that made the execution a bit weaker than MGS1.

Disrespectful listing Metal Gear Rising as "other Metal Gear related game". lol

For me it will always be MGS2, but my reasons are subjective. I had played MGS and had my mind blown by it, but that only served to pave the way for my mind being simply rearranged by everything MGS2 was.

In a broader context it surely heralded the graphics style that almost all "good graphics" games draw ancestry from to this day. Watch the game from start to finish and you are going to be watching unprecedented graphics the entire time. Obviously later games overtook it, but it paved the way. Sharp textures, subtle colours, detailed models, heaps of enoturage in every level, real time realistic shadows, weather effects of great style, great futuristic art direction and hud display, joyous profusion of easter eggs... Animated 3D portaits in the radio interface... Just everything.

It was still entirely concerned with creeping and infiltration.

Great story, characters.

Great gameplay flourishes (escorting Emma for instance)

I could go on but i would probably become conspicuously attentive to my phone at my desk here.

It was just so really great.

Loved them all, obviously.

To be honest, it is just hard for me to decide on best Metal Gear ever, even if each new game improved in some way compared to the previous one.

I guess I could say that MGS1 is most iconic one, IMO, but all of them are just so good, and such a great experience, that it is impossible to choose.

MGS3 Subsistence wins.
I haven't played MGS V Phantom Pain though.

On a sidenote, people often tout MGS2 as the hallmark of PS2 graphics, visual style and character model realism.
Well, even though I did give Raiden a fair chance way back when MGS2 released, his character model has always looked absurd to me.
Shinkawa and Kojima can wave the MGS2 document and anatomy character studies all day long at me,
but no one can tell me Raiden's character model makes sense, anatomy-wise or in context of "realistic style".

Because, I finally bothered to download the Raiden character model, and as a character artist I must say the
proportions and even the way of poly modeling are so incredibly warped....it's asbsurd;
The gigantic wide hips, the tiny wasp waist, the overly anime styled face etc. (even the little biceps bulge to the side is nonsense)
I did a quick edit on the model to show how the original compares to what I think would be a more reasonable model, even in context of MGS2's stylized "realism" visuals.

Thicc neck Raiden. Looks looks like he's been hitting the 'roids judging by that rage face too.
