MLB 2020 (Off-season/Spring Training/Regular Season) : Baseball is dull only to dull minds

Community here in town is really split on Noly

half of us seem to dismiss his concerns over lack of competitiveness with “bruh we paid you”

other half don’t blame him for not wanting to be here anymore

if he’s traded I’ll miss him

I think a trade for Arenado is more likely to happen than a Betts trade. The situation in Colorado is getting ugly. But also, what did he really expect? They won a wild card spot and he thinks they can go to the World Series all of the sudden? He shouldn't have resigned if he's so upset about a lack of competitiveness, it was clear that was going to be the case.

He felt like they didn’t honor their gentlemen’s agreement to try and get better every year. Probably feels that not only did they not get anyone, they didn’t try. They were linked to no one all off season.

So it begins - I can’t imagine the reception for these players next year will be pretty. I also don’t see MLB doing anything more than what they’ve already done.

Arenado is a beast. Arguably the most unknown underrated player, since he plays in Colorado.

The Reigning, Defending, Undisputed World Series Champions...

The Washington Nationals!

Welcome NeoGAF to another baseball year. It never stops after all, 365 days a year.

This OT will cover the 2019-2020 Off Season, 2020 Spring Training, and 2020 Regular Season.

I wanted to start the OT after the World series. Unfortunately after a brief celebration by myself, the Astro's cheating scandal broke. So I waited to start until we had a big Free Agent signing.

We lost someone today from MLB... Gerardo Parra

Parra has signed to play in Japan. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/gerardo-parra-signs-japan-npb-yomiuri-giants.html

Parra was not only a member of the Reigning, Defending, Undisputed World Series Champions... The Washington Nationals. He was also a member of NeoGAF's Reigning, Defending, Undisputed Fantasy Baseball League Champions... The Bear Backs (Super Nationals).

God Bless Mr. Parra and his Baby Shark attack. You will be missed!

We have FA signings to discuss, Team Wishlists to invent, and soon Baseball to watch

And a World Series to win

White Sox are going all the way

For some reason it escaped me that the baseball thread(s) moved to communities, lol. I guess I just thought it disappeared.

Glad I found it. (I rarely look at the communities section)

Anyway, I'm happy my Twins signed Donaldson. Should be a nice addition, despite advancing age. I hope he can avoid serious decline for at least a couple more years. Should be a juiced lineup again in 2020. Maybe we'll meet the Yanks in the ALCS to enjoy our traditional sweep. :messenger_anguished:

Reds sign Nicholas Castellanos to a 4 year $64 million deal. Good signing for the Reds, I think he'll do well in Great American Ballpark. Question now is what they plan to do with all those extra outfielder, maybe swing a trade for some pitching?

Reds fans should be excited to sign such a pure ball player.

He should be a good fit to get the situation semi under control over there. Will be weird seeing him manage in the AL though. But I suppose when Torre went from the NL to the AL things worked out okay for him

I was hoping Buck got the gig, but this must mean time has passed him by. And I'm sick of this hippy talk about changing the NL rules to add the DH. Stop trying to change mah baseball! This modern version of the shift is already stupid. Can't tackle the 2nd baseman and catcher with the slide. It's just gettin' phony! Don't be the NFL! Don't ruin the sport I love!

Rumors of a Betts trade brewing between Red Sox and Dodgers.

The Dads were heavily rumored to be interested in Betts, I wonder if that got the Dodgers into gear. But if I'm the Dodgers I'm not feeling the least bit threatened by San Diego so there's no need for them to go crazy trying to keep him away from other teams in their division.

What Coast will Mookie Betts play on come Opening Day, East or West?

I think he stays with Boston at least to start the year.

On another note - saw this gem from Lindor:

wtf

I think he goes west

If I am Cleveland, I don’t want to be the team that lost Lindor. Generational talent, Face of the franchise and one of the faces of the sport.

Yep all the offense in the world doesn't help when you've got an all time generational choker leading the charge in the playoffs. Dodgers didn't really need to make this trade and as great as Mookie Betts is I don't think he's the missing ingredient that brings them a championship

I can't believe the Red Sox holding up the 3 team trade with the Twins and Dodgers. Twins better not budge and give those f'ers anything more than Graterol for Maeda.

In fact, if I were the Twins, I'd just cancel the deal immediately out of spite.

It certainly is an odd situation

Was just about to post that news.

Anyway, you fellas watch the AJ Hinch interview? Are we forgiving this Snek?

My thought from before was he must have had zero control over the locker room if he smashed their monitors multiple times and they kept on cheating. Yet it seems that was the case. Which makes it that much weirder, why is a manager seemingly so afraid/ineffective of keeping his guys in order? Did they have pictures of his ass? Return tickets from Epsteins Island?

Also he completely avoids the question about the buzzers. I had a suspicion the league knew and swept it under the rug and answering in that way is just going to fuel speculation.

I say fuck the players more than ever now and once again Manfred is a punk who let them off Scotfree

Of course the league knew. This league needs a proper enema.

Did the report on Red Sox cheating come out yet? New Sox’s Gm is not making any friends

Maeda to Twins is finally done, I suppose. I'm just glad the deal excluded the beaneaters.

I'm not convinced Maeda will be as good as the Twins hope, but he's essentially free considering the $ the Dodgers are sending back (after Graterol and the pick of course) , and we needed to solidify the starting staff. Can't really complain about the deal - unless Graterol develops into a big league phenom. (Please no more David Ortiz's. Granted, he was just straight up released. 🤡)

Maeda is a definite plus to any staff imo.

Oh, I agree. I'm just not sure he's going to be as good as the Twins hope. I think he'll be decent for sure, and I hope he'll be better than that, obviously. He certainly makes our overall starting staff significantly stronger overall - on paper at least. I can't fault the deal. I'm happy.

MLB looking to make some postseason changes.

Honestly, I feel the current set up is fine. You have 10 teams making the playoffs each year, it still has a fairly exclusive feel for your team to make it. The draft thing sounds stupid and something I'd expect out of the XFL. Lastly I like the playoffs short and sweet, a month is the perfect length. I'd hate to see the playoffs stretched out an extra few weeks (or heaven forbid a month) just because whatever.

Was just reading this but here https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/02/mlb-reportedly-planning-postseason-changes.html

Honestly it is way better than dumb ideas like moving the mound back. But I don't think there has been teams in the past that "should have" made the playoffs. The Phillies, Cubs, and Mets were the last teams eliminated from the Post Season last year in the NL. None of them were good or deserving. However, perhaps expanding the field will allow for more trades and desire from teams to get better mid way thru the season.

I grew up when you had to win your division and the LCS was only best of 5. And of course it used to be win the pennant and start the World Series. I still remember watching the '77 World Series when Mr. October was born in game 6.

I think if you expand things too much you kind of devalue the regular season, and in this sport where it's such a marathon, I really don't think I would like that. Of course, with the game struggling in some ways, there will be changes in the hopes of injecting some energy into things.
