What is an obscure and relatively unknown game that you think everyone needs to play?

Flying Dragon N64 is probably the most obscure game I know. Used to play it all the time when I was a kid.

Really good fighting game but the main draw was the RPG like elements. Getting items, leveling up and all that, I loved it and would like another game like it, spent hundreds of hours trying to unlock and get everything, make the best characters, could never unlock Yuka's last special though, doesn't seem possible.

Onore no Shinzuru Michi wo Yuke on Playstation Portable is a fun puzzle game where you have to use previous lives to kill enemies and trigger traps, in order to advance with the current player.

Patchwork Heroes on Playstation Portable is, imo, the best Qix clone ever done. If course this is much more popular, since it is a game produced by Japan Studio.

Nervous Brickdown on Nintendo DS. Great Breakout clone with creative ways to play.

Nanashi no Game/Me on Nintendo DS. Probably the best portable horror game I've ever played. It's one of those very few games that renders 3D in both screens (well, technically not at the same time but you know). Me is the sequel, pretty much the same thing.

Unsolved Crimes on Nintendo DS. One of the lesser known touch adventures for the console. Of course it is not Hotel Dusk but it does the job.

Ive a game called Hover on my switch thats pretty cool but doesnt seem to get much love.

Its not perfect but it does hit a niche for futuristic 90s style arcadey skating.

And for the bazillionth time, if you like stuff like ridge racer please try xenon racer. Its only remaining flaw is that the game doesnt tell you how to drift properly (just tap handbrake twice).

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Dunno about everyone having to play it but this is cool if Saturn/old console space shooters are your thing.

Was kinda blown away it exists at all, shame it never caught on despite combining the cool factor of rail shooters like Star Fox with full 360 flight. SEGA was all about arcade fun but Saturn still has a lot of longform games worth digging into, from JRPGs to faux-sim style games like this and Gungriffon 1 & 2. Love em all.

Also, Sakura Wars on the same system now that it's been fan translated in top quality. I guess the series isn't so obscure though it's not had much of a presence outside Japan, but the fan translation probably still is. Visual Novel adventure with SRPG-esque battle sequences in a cool steampunk setting.

Oh and once again on the Saturn Exhumed/Powrslave still counts as obscure I'm sure, even if it got some extra attention after the whole Powerslave EX deal and this Digital Foundry video. This one's probably more of a must play given it's a genre more people tend to enjoy and it's so unique and awesome at that.

Rule of Rose because it's a totally unique game with a beautifully lush sense of style and atmosphere.

Unfortunately actual copes of the game are selling for hundreds of dollars now, I got mine for 50$ in 2014 which was very lucky.

I wish there was a better way for people to have official access to the game because I really do think it's one everyone should play.

I'd be surprised if anyone on GAF played this. I doubt it's aged well either. Still, it's probably the best adventure game that nobody played, and the book series is even better. If they made a Death Gate RPG on a triple A budget, I'd die a happy man...
When you say Death Gate do you mean the Weiss Hickman series? Because that sounds awesome!

Gonna play it this year hopefully ;)

I really loved the way the player character could interact or choose not to with every event in the game. My top action rpg and leagues ahead of many other games in the same genre. I didn't care for any of the sequels unfortunately which forced the player into arbitrary events and actions.

Boku no Natsuyasumi series. It's famous in Japan, but unknown in the West, probably because it's never been released in the West. It exists since the 1st PlayStation. In it you play a young boy, during his summer vacation. There are lots of endings, events. It's a pretty relaxing game to play.

Future Cop LAPD on the PSX

Exhumed - also PSX (but I guess most people here know about that game)

Mad Dash Racing - OG Xbox (the sp sucks cuz of bad balancing, but it's really funny to play it with friends via split screen)

None. I only play popular games with 3+ million sales on VGChartz and 90+ score on Metacritic.

Please play Builder's Block / Landmaker on the PS1. I wish I had a PSN link to offer but sadly it was not released digitally in any region afaik.

The main puzzle mode is excellent, chill puzzle solving with a weird minimalistic story about rebuilding civilization.

The full arcade version is included and is also excellent, both in sp and mp. If you aren't making 4x4 buildings on the regular don't even @ me.

That whole series is cool, why single out the one? And Trilby: The Art of Theft as well! That Yahtzee guy needs to get back to game dev.

Because it's the entry of the series and sets the tone, if someone tries this one and ending up liking it, they will play the other naturally
But yeah, the whole series is amazing.

Fist bump fellow Musashi and Maximo fan!
Also this game is fantastic and nobody talks about it even though it's part of a famous series

PSP games in general are underrated
UGnG is a tragedy: the most accessible title in the franchise paired with the most complex, replayable stages and yet it is relegated to the dustbin of the PSP library. :lollipop_weary:

For me that's the original MDK by shiny.

It was such a huge commercial flop, despite getting critical praise from almost everywhere, and being one of the most interesting games of the late 90ies.

Plus, it looked really awesome for its time with its Moebius style graphics, amazing atmosphere, humor and some really good feeling weapon, sniper and float mechanics.

For me still one of the greatest games ever.

One of the most immersive games I've ever played thanks to an old roomie who knew how to read different Japanese scripts and a list we saw on Gamefaqs.

Hungry Ghosts is a lot like King's Field IV (or a first person Dark Souls 1 if you're unfamiliar with the KF series) if it was an open ended survival horror game focused on puzzles and exploration instead of combat (present in sparse amounts). It isn't a perfect game by any means but a damn fine one if you can dig in and definitely one of the most atmospheric games available on the PS2--though most of that atmosphere can be attributed to amazing monster designs that approach BB levels of quality.

Cons: Controls can be unwieldy, mainly because you use the right stick to perform actions and attack while L1+LS is used to look. Some actions can take more time than you'd like as a result but it adds to the immersion
Menus can be too cluttered
A few guide dang it moments

So basically King's Field IV mixed with Amnesia/Penumbra.

It's hard to describe this game: half detective, half survival but really you are drawn in by the atmosphere and the script.

I've always considered most videogame stories to be generic, repetitive, always hitting the same notes, Pathologic is however one big exception: this game has a message.

LOL I laughed hard, tought no one knew about this besides of me, and came here to write about it, but...

Btw, played countless times on my Gamecube back in the first 2000s decade, it's AN awesome gem everyone should give a chance to, trust me

Not much refined to the point you could Say it's a masterpiece, but definitely entertaining, with some great features and the story is awesome

The Muv-Luv series.

If you haven't played it, you don't know the full potential of visual novels.

One of the best games I've ever experienced as a kid who didn't know games can involve such pure puzzle solving mechanics. From the Motel level to the memorable Garden of Eden-esque level where you have to solve a jigsaw puzzle!

I never completed the game because I was too young to figure out how! Maybe this year I'll make an LTTP for it ;)
