Birds of Prey teaser (Harley Quinn)

What do you define woke culture as? What's the difference between it and political correctness?
Political Correctness is a tool of woke culture, although it predates it (as does the term 'woke', which has its origins in the american black civil rights movement).

Woke is the catch all term for radical far left extremism, based around intersectional femenism, that views people not as individuals with free will, merely influenced by biology and upbringing, but as interchangeable blank slates entirely beholden to and defined by their immutable characteristics such as race, sexuality and gender.

Woke also sees the whole world as a fight between these groups for dominance, and that all culture, entertainment and art is merely tools by whichever group is currently doing best (read straight white males) to keep everyone else down and maintain their powerbase. This is the soul reason anyone does anything.

It is a worldview defined by shallow superficiality, postmodernism and inate hatreds. The more 'oppressed' characteristics you have, the more help you need as the more discrimination you will face.

It also leads to the idea that to defeat oppression you need to simply swap out the more dominant individuals for the more oppressed.

Since everyone is equally able to do any job, and there is no objective reality or quality to judge anything against due to all views, experiences and beliefs being equally true and interchangeable, the woke seek to have as much diversity in as many visible and influential positions as possible, regardless of ability, qualifications or suitability, or even broad trends in any such groups interests, because they dont believe such things exist.

This is of course all utter bollocks, but it has social capital amongst left wing elites, and big globalist corporations bloody love it, so it gets rammed down our throats regardless.

Woke culture didn't even exist pre-2015. Seinfeld, Friends, and all other good shows back in 90s and early 2000s broke every single rule in SJW handbook and yet they were the most popular shows on TV at the time

Woke culture started to arise in 2012-2015 because of these reasons
- The rise of social media
- When Soros donated most of his money, totalling 20-billions+ dollar, to social advocacy groups

Ahh, so you are a conspiracy nut. I get it.

It doesn't adhere to the term woke if it was made before 2012

fucking rofl

I hope the financial failure doesn’t discourage R-rated projects in the future

Deadpool and Logan have proven it can work (as dis Joker, but that’s a different genre for me).

Yeah, but that was actually a good movie.

(as does the term 'woke', which has its origins in the american black civil rights movement).

If that's true, it was extremely niche of a term. Modern woke culture has almost nothing in common with the Civil Rights Movement. However, both were eventually co-opted and turned from the inside-out by principals held by ideologies hailing from the Tavistock Institute.

Arguably speaking the current "woke" culture started back with Occupy Wallstreet, which actually began with genuine reasons and goals, but then got co-opted and ruined inside-out. That's how a lot of the offshoot socio-political movements of the past decade came about materializing, and that of course has led to media piggybacking off of these socio-political movements for financially-orientated reasons chiefly among them.

It's true that woke culture, as we know it today, did not exist when those shows were on the air, but I certainly would not call either one of those shows anti-woke or particularly un-PC. I think their greatest sins according to woke police would be the fat jokes, and mostly white casts. Other than that, they both prominently featured gay characters, predominantly featured weak & neurotic male figures, were feminist torchbearers, I mean, I don't know exactly what you mean by "they broke every rule in the SJW handbook", I can't even recall anything particularly edgy in either show that wouldn't be considered positively progressive today.

I think woke culture is largely just an evolution of the PC police that were gaining steam in the 80's and 90's.

oh gimme a fucking break, those shows would not pass today's SWJ standard, and you know it

SJWs would've screamed all white, chauvinist, misogynist, sexist, racist, white privilege, all the fucking bullshit vocabs they can come up with

Like I said, their greatest sins were fat jokes and white casts. Today the fat jokes would be erased, and skin colours diversified, but other than that they were actually leftist shows in my mind that pushed progressive ideas and made heroes of weak men.

i don't think either show would fly today. Seinfeld had a strict "no learning, no hugging" policy. their characters were all supposed to be horrible people. fat jokes were not the extent, they got downright nasty. there are a lot of 90s racist stereotypes in the show, like the episode where Jerry is dating a Native American and people are constantly doing cringey jokes at her expense, or just about anything involving a Chinese person. one episode has Jerry drugging his girlfriend so that he and George can play with her toy collection, which is super fucked up.

yes they had the "not that there's anything wrong with that" gay episode, but a piece of media can be both progressive and not woke at the same time. a lot of regressive stuff gets a free pass when something comes out because of progressive marketing, but in time, that contextual shield no longer matters. in 10 years or so we will be looking back at Marvel movies that seemed woke to us at the time going "I can't believe they did this, people were so racist back then". something can seem progressive at the time but not really be. i would argue this is actually the rule, given that media keeps getting more and more woke, that things in the past will seem less so as time goes on.

Is it unwoke though that they're making fun of Jerry for accidentally coming across as racist to his Native girlfriend? This sort of thing happens to Larry in Curb regularly does it not?

The only other Chinese jokes I can think of were the one where Jerry asks the mailman where the Chinese restaurant is, and he is offended because he believes Jerry only asked because he's Chinese and not because he's a postman. This is Curb humour, I feel like this sort of thing would still play today. I guess also the stereotypical portrayal of the restaurant dude in the Chinese restaurant episode, but I mean, that's really not a whole lot. The Donna Chang one as well, but again that's sort of an indictment of white people appropriating shit (or being clueless to other cultures like the oranges with Japanese NBC)

That not how it works since all that money doesnt go straight back to the studio.

Yes I know but it's still on track to make all it's money back. Still a disaster of course but WB should be happy to make their money back
lol

I'm seeing this in half hour, still not excited. Let's see how it plays out.

Ooph, that was a rough movie. It felt like 3 or 4 scripts cut together. How hard is it to write a script, storyboard it out to make sure it holds together, and then just shoot it? These films ought to be a piece of cake since there are so many comic plots to pick from.

Anyway, why this is called Birds of Prey is beyond me. It's a HQ film through and through. It really needed some Nightwing or Batgirl or SOMETHING to elevate it beyond just dumb crime drama. Even the fights were a disappointment because these 110 pound waifs routinely take down 250 pound brutes and never even break a sweat. It had some fun moments but its gonna join SS in the 'never watch again' pile for me.

Captain Marvel 2 will be the big one.

In the meantime I'm more interested in WW1984 and Black Widow, neither of which are pushing the woke narrative, and just look like good superhero movies.

If both those succeed without any woke bollocks, it'll make this whole 'men won't watch these films because they're sexist' diatribe even more obviously a pile of rancid wank.
😂 at you people thinking your “get woke get broke” bullshit will affect a marvel movie.

Movie was actually better than I thought it would be. Very entertaining and fun action scenes. Didn't really care for any of the characters though, no connection with any of them.
Name of the movie is wrong too.

It affected Star Wars, and there's a very obvious backlash that's been increasingly hitting these overtly political movies.

But no, I'm not expecting it to fail, or would be surprised if it did over a billion, but I'm expecting it to be significantly under the performance of the first movie.

It didn’t affect Captain Marvel, it didn’t affect Infinifty War or Endgame.

people didn’t dislike Star Wars becuase it was ”woke”. They disliked it becuase it was bad (TLJ in particular)

Infinity War wasn't woke and Endgame had what, 1 or 2 woke scenes that barely effected anything?

Meanwhile Captain Marvel was both before the backlash against these extremist political opinions really started to become mainstream, and was sandwiched between the 2 aforementioned biggest movies of all time.

That's why I'm interested in how the sequel will do, since people have started to get sick of this crap and it won't have other movies to carry it.

Also get out of town with trying to act like TLJ wasn't shit because it was woke. That entire movie is a shambolic mess that deliberately wanted to destroy what Star Wars and drive away the 'problematic' portion of the audience, precisely because it was adhering to identitarian, post-modernist far left political insanity.

Seriously, why do you think peopel dislike woke politics in media so much? It only ever makes for bad storytelling, awful scripts and unlikeable characters.

TFA was just as woke and politics induced as anything else and it did fine. Why, becuase the movie was a decent film.

TLJ was not, and it hurt the franchise. People are seeing things that they want to see, but the numbers don’t lie.

The Force Awakens was also, as I said, well before the backlash against woke movies began, and shit.

It was just such a shameless rip off of A New Hope that it just about manages to be watchable by virtue of drapping itself in the trappings of nostalgia. It still had terrible villians, boring characters, nonsensical plotlines, and utterly rubbish dialogue.

TFA had potential to be the basis for a good Trilogy, but only because of it ripping off a film that undeniably was that decades previously.

TLJ wasn't a sudden shift in quality, it was the exact same woke, boring, unimaginative crap as TFA, but it decided to piss on nostalgia instead of hide behind it.

I am very sure it will.
The only thing Captain Marvel 1 had going for it was being sandwiched in between Infinity War and Endgame. It felt like you needed to watch this movie to get the whole story. Like Stilton Disco wrote..

On its own, and especially after Endgame, this won't be doing good numbers.

People keep saying this shit but Captain Marvel sold very well on home media too. If people hated the film that much its home sales would have tanked but they didn't.

My roommate is rewatching Friends at the moment.

That show, as fucking harmless as it was, would never ever ever ever be made today.

From everything I've seen on it's performance, it had well above average initial sales (which again is to be expected given its release between Infinity War and Endgame), but far worse long term sales than normal for a Marvel movie.

I will say I'm not expecting it to fail. Hell, it could break another Billion and I'd not be shocked, I didn't expect Far From Home to be such a huge success and I loved that movie. I think we should all be aware right now that Marvel movies just do not fail.

But I'm also noticing the distinct lack of Captain Marvel promotion Marvel have been doing since her movie came out.

This is the character they positioned to be the replacement for Iron Man, the new face of the MCU, that Kevin Feige was 100% behind as the best possible actress and character to represent the brand going forward, and yet here we are, a year later, and we know more about what pretty much every other character is planned to be doing, but the new poster girl is no where to be seen.

It's hard to say what that exactly was. That quote apparently came from a CineEurope sizzle reel for the MCU but there was no exact quoting of what was said in that video and it wasn't leaked publicly as far as I am aware. If you find it though let me know.
CineEurope was in June of 2019 so obviously their current phase 4 slate was already mostly set in stone. Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang Chi, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Loki were already in pre production. Doctor Strange 2, Spider-Man 3 and Thor 4 aren't even in pre production though. Just like phase 3 had things shifted and changed, the same can happen with phase 4.
And we have no idea what phase 4 will look like at its completion. I mentioned in the Eternals thread that that film opens up the cosmic side. If that is what is happening, the Avengers may need to be at a much higher power level for whatever threat is happening. And if that happens I could see Captain Marvel at the forefront of that team.
