I've listened to this band for quite awhile. They're like one of the best bands I've heard. The biggest draw to them besides the high quality music is their not giving a fuck attitude. What I mean by that is they're dressing up as gay nazis, sailors and
generally they're pretending to be gay. Uninformed people might think that they're gay, but in reality, they're not. That's the whole point. Toying with gayness for comedic purposes. It's brilliant.
I remember I had a friend who liked their music. I was talking him and a topic of Turbonegro has come up and he said he listens to them in secret. He doesn't want anybody knowing he listens to them because they're gay.
I then had to explain to him that they're not gay and pretending to be gay is the whole point.

About Turbonegro: Apocalypse Dudes was one the greatest albums of all time when it came out in 1998, then Hank got into mental hospital and that was that. When they came back, their albums lost lot of their energy they had at the early stage. I don't know what they are up to these days and not sure if I care. Too bad if Hank has left again.

Did you know that Turbonegro used to play their first gigs in blackface? It's on one of their early dvd's, good luck finding that clip on youtube. One could just imagine the comments if that happened.

Also, long ago, when they had their first gigs in france, Hans had a pretty rousing speech to their audience:
"So you are french, you make nuclear tests, right..? And we are norwegians, our country hunts the whales, right?.. Guess what, our countries should work together.. LETS HUNT WHALES WITH NUCLEAR BOMBS!!"

Their bassist, Happy Tom, explained why the gay image was created; Turbonegro was formed at a time when every kid in norway listened to black metal. So trying to form up an Alice Cooper-inspired Shock Rock band at that era was a real challenge. So, they chose the gay image because that was really offensive to all the black metal kids at the time. Oh how the times have changed..
