Sophia Narwitz: Gaming journalism insider outs 'clique' that does not tolerate right leaning newcomers

Honestly, I didn't know that this place would be frequented by so many far right members. Terms like "soy boy," "NPC," "Woke" and "SJW" are used unironically, with a frequency that suggests these views aren't just tolerated, but encouraged. This place is said to foster open discussion of all viewpoints, so that's to be expected, I guess.

SJW is a term that originated by the people referred to as SJWs. They chose the label. Not everyone else's fault that they can't stand it now. It's also useful as a means of discerning rational, thinking left-leaning people from authoritarian leftists with a heavy interest in usurping popular culture while trampling the free expression of dissenting voices.

why are you such a bigot

Thanks for the slight chuckle though.

serious question

who actually, unironically, gives a flying piece of a single fuck what any "gaming journalist" has to say?

People who don't want them to have to much influence or people who are concerned that they already have too much influence.

The reason why they have no "right-wing" writers is because they want to present a united front when it comes to gaming commentary, news, features etc.
The reason they want to present a united front is because they want to have influence.

So you have videogame developers and publishers who are worried about their bottom line.
Even worse than that you have indie developers who are sometimes risking everything on a game.
Then you have these wannabe activists who can apply pressure here and there and potentially can hurt a games development if they are not appeased.

Recently their behavior over FarCry 5, Kingdom Come, Sekiro (and how it looks like they are ready to go with Cyberpunk) is a bit concerning.

it is true that having and expressing your political view does impact your job and even getting a new one. that's why i avoid this like plague at work. it's easier though if you belong to the "right side of history". and that doesn't apply only to arts. tech industry too.

Did anyone see this? The anonymous source from Sophia's article expanded on the things touched upon in the original article.

Pretty interesting stuff.

Any guesses on who this source is?
It's a nice addendum to the overal story.
There's one great comment to that post, calling the author (and by default all other centric/conservative or in any other words decent bloggers, journos and writers) cowards for not going with GamerGate when it blew up.
The anon is right and has a point - the source dismisses GG based on false accusationa that it was a hate movement (you know who spinned this narrative) but now, when things are really uncomfortable they are talking in secrecy with the one and only journalist tha's not afraid to voice her opinion.
They could have helped weeding out the undesirables or at least shutting them down denying them the sole voice of the industry. Now they are rooted so deep that you'd have to take down whole outlets to get them out.

The thing I dislike in Narvitz and twitter reactions about her piece is how it illustrates most people are actually contaminated by the wokies discourse (or "culture war" proponents -the allied id right and id left - general rhetoric), conflating left leaning and wokies and seeming to think the main victims of the wokies/"sjw" are really "conservatives".

The most silenced political tendancy is the universalist left (both what americans would call "classic liberals" and the old school 'class warfare' radical left not supporting the recent dive into identity politics). Conservatives actually can easily find their own public, retreating to places like youtube or their own medias, there's no real power to "cancel" them. They are far more resilient to wokies tactics than the people contradicting them from the left (or just daring to express nuanced opinions), for whom suddenly being associated with reactionnaries / "the alt-right" by these kind of cliques can be a social death sentence. And it's the real reason the wokie discourse has become so dominant in the media, reasonable left-leaning people find no option other than to comply to the 'sjw' bullies when they are criticized. Resisting their push would mean being soon associated with the alt-right, losing the public they shared with the id left and seing tons of old "friends" turn their back on them.

That is only the case because of how the pendulum is currently swinging. Believe me, anti-war conservatives have just as much trouble finding a voice. Imagine being a religious conservative during the Bush Jr years, for instance. Ostracization from within the group was common. Conservatives that held a heterodox view would be shunned or shouted down by zealous Republicans, which bubbled under the surface until the Tea Party shredded the party from within. Conservatives may now be able to find a voice on YouTube or their own media, bu this is after years and years and years of insult and shunning from both their opponents and from die-hard Republicans.

The Left is going through the same thing: moral authoritarians within the party have taken the reins. They will whip anyone who does not fall in line because when you're fighting against The Ultimate Satan, you can't have disunity in the party. Those whose morals align in some ways but not others feel politically orphaned because the party itself has been pulled off the rails.

tl;dr I know that feel. It's not just you.

By the way, someone should invite Upper echelon gamers if he hasn't already been. That guy does some genuinely notable coverage.

What does "openly right leaning" actually mean?
So you are playing stupid now? That is your defense?

Oh, so Sophia expects the people she's asked to know the personal positions of every writer at these "major gaming publications" (as she says), and when they've Tweeted something in regards to them, then throw them into the spotlight just to prove a point ...Yeah, that sounds realistic... :pie_eyeroll:
Uhh that does sound realistic. It's a simple question that should have a simple answer.

So I haven't seen any game journalists in mainstream media congratulating Donald Trump or any Republican for Super Tuesday. This is strange to me because Jason said this was a conspiracy theory. Is he a liar and there is a left wing gatekeeping in game media?

sophnar0747 sophnar0747 have you seen any journalists talking about anything other than Bernie and Warren?
