PS5 specs revealed. Up to 10.2 Tflops.

Wonder if this will be a traditional flat console, or if they go with something like Series X to help with the cooling.

Anyone watching this and not thinking Sony were completely caught with their tech pants down by Microsofts determination not to be bested in hardware specs, is deluded.

...It begs the question just how much weaker the PS5 would have been had Microsoft not given them advance notice over the last 3mths, to revise their GPU clock speeds, which they almost certainly have, to boost it to 10.2Tf.

Neither Sony or Microsoft would choose to start a new generation with significantly weaker hardware.

Mhm, it will have faster loading than Xbox. By a lot actually. Microsoft went for raw TFLOP power. Sony went for performance efficiency. Very android vs Apple imo.

Erm, no.

Not that it would stop from folks spreading fud.

The graphics processing unit (of Xbox Series X) is also a custom unit based on AMD's RDNA 2 graphics architecture with 52 compute units running at 1.465GHz (base) & 1.825GHz (boost) that is capable of 9.75 (base) teraflops & 12.14 (boost) teraflops of computational power.

You guys are making stuff up, this is in the very article you just quoted.

Microsoft has delivered 12 teraflops of compute performance via 3328 shaders allocated to 52 compute units (from 56 in total on silicon, four disabled to increase production yield) running at a sustained, locked 1825MHz. Once again, Microsoft stresses the point that frequencies are consistent on all machines, in all environments. There are no boost clocks with Xbox Series X.

There is no variability on the MS spec sheet.

I see the PS5 coming in just shy of XSX in terms of GPU power.

Complete ass-pull but I think they've likely got lower CU counts but will have tried to push the clocks higher to try and catch up. Probably easier to add more copper to a heatsink than to add a bigger GPU.

Again, total story from my ass.

I feel like my ass pull was closer than it should have been.

Really surprised at AMDs approach to ray-tracing. I would have made separate cores for the RT like Nvidia did. The RT in a game will quickly overload the SMUs doing other things. I don't like that design at all. I would call it software RT for sure for both consoles.

Pricing is key for PS5 to succeed, power thing is going to be run into the ground until launch. Series X has better GPU, CPU, and RT. Only thing going for Sony is ridiculously fast SSD (which to me doesn't make sense as to why it was such a big priority for them).

$399 and this thing will sell bonkers, $449 sales will take a hit but not significantly. $499? Gonna be eaten in markets like US/UK by Series X.

What makes all of this worse is, the GPU and CPU don't run at the peak clock speeds constantly, unlike the Series X! Microsoft knew what they were doing! Phil is watching this, with a huge, wicked grin on his face.

I guess this concludes who's going stronger into next gen; it's the Xbox. However, Part II is on the way... The PS5 Pro and a Suped up Series X will be coming in two to three years. And so, the console wars continue!

I doubt it.

Also looks indeed like a 2019 launch machine , Github to the dot.

Interesting book material , what went wrong?

Dude yes.

I'm not interested on buying a next gen console, but Microsoft has destroyed Sony in the specs reveal:

- better specs overall for Series X.

- way better of comunicate that through video, articles, letting media to touch the hardware.

- already showed the design of the box.

While here you have Mark Cerny explaining what is an SSD in 2020.

I took the quote that specific person on face value, didn't realize it was completely manufactured. My apologies.

And indeed, you're right. Series X clocks are locked, but PS5 has variable clocks, where they haven't revealed the base clocks. Very muddy presentation, will be interesting to see the response from here on.

I think people are very much into the TF thing. They have a console that has much better SSD capabilites and people need to see this aspect more clearly. the TF alone isn't what makes the console best. it's everything around it. This console will probably land on 399- 449 USD.

Question for the tech-savvy:

XSX has better CPU and GPU
PS5 has 3D Audio and 2x faster SSD

And RAM equals out?

Have to hand it to MS, they have strong hand going into next-gen and they're smart for not doing a Series S.
I still stand by what I said, that MS will have an issue selling Xbox if they release both a Series X and S and PS5 is sitting in the middle (all priced accordingly), but rn it's gonna be a competitive race again. Lol

Xbox will have that because they have a faster RAM and CPU. They both have NVMe SSDs which are very fast.

I'll get it anyways with the dynamic resolution scaling and other tricks like all games are made of tricks will be good at least this gen we got a nice balance in GPU / CPU / RAM :) freaks !

I’ll be buying both consoles as I always do. PS5 at launch, possible XSX at launch, depends on the launch titles for me. If not I’ll get it at some point.

As long as the games look great and the software is cool and it has good features, that’s good enough for me.
