It is so fucking wild using the SSG to propel yourself across the map toward a demon to come down on him with your chainsaw. I was avoiding the SSG like I typically do because of the ammo usage but you have every reason to use it here, ammo is free and dear god that upgraded meathook is just amazing.

Hey peeps, I want a new game to play and DE has me seriously tempted however I'm not sure I'm an FPS person anymore. I played FPS when I was younger relentlessly. I suppose my original love for them started with the original Doom as well... maybe Wolfenstein 3D also. Really got my teeth into them with Goldeneye on N64 and if I'm honest I felt like I used to do really well with that. Then things moved onto Quake on PC and the many other games released during those years like Half-Life all the way through to the COD and Battlefield games and I feel like I used to constantly be able to hit the top 5 in the leader boards most times I played. I played many many hours up until BF4 which I didn't seem to be as good at anymore, during BF3 and BF4 days I was only playing BF, no other FPS really and my amount of gaming was really dropping off over those years. I think with my age my reaction speed was lagging and I just couldn't seem to compete anymore. I was still doing ok but it's not really enjoyable to get your ass kicked constantly and as that happened I let my desire to play FPS games lag. I've been Mouse and Keyboard all the way.

However, I really enjoyed Jedi Fallen Order for the few days it took me to finish at the end of last year which prompted me to go back and check out Titanfall 2. I played TF2 on PS4 Pro and I was mostly quite happy with the experience. I mean I finished it. It was good and it's a good sign for me these days if I finish a game since I seem to get bored so very quickly with so many games lately.

I tried DOOM 2016 at some point, I'm pretty sure I downloaded the Demo and while I thought it looked great it just felt way too fast-paced and overall too brutal for me to keep up with.

I'm posting here to ask whether people would recommend me to try Doom Eternal or is it just as fast-paced and brutal as the first game? Judging from the reviews I doubt I'm going to like it. I think I'd like the platforming sections and I'd love the setting. I'm especially getting some pretty awesome Warhammer40k vibes which is pretty much my favourite franchise of all time and so it's making me want to play the game but I don't just don't think I'm up to the speed and brutality of the game. Just how difficult would it be for someone who pretty much sucks at FPS to beat the difficult demon's among all those other enemies? Counting the factor that I'd probably play on PS4 Pro and using a controller is not my forte...

I have concerns about cyberpunk being FPRPG but also I think the RPG part of it will make that possible to play with a controller and I'm expecting to be playing that on the PS4 Pro using a controller as well since I felt like I managed relatively well for Titanfall. I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna play Doom Eternal. Just articulating most of my thoughts in this post has made the decision for me. I might as well not make the post but I've typed this whole thing up now I'll just hit reply anyway. Dag Nammit. Want a new game to play already.

The pace is faster and brutality cranked up even more so you most likely won't like it. When the action is going you can't stand still for even a second or you're toast. I'd give 2016 another shot to see if you still feel the same.

Ok, I take everything back I said before, this is better then 2016 in almost every aspect. Except maybe the jumping sections, still not feeling them.

I'm loving most of it but jumping sections are almost always annoying as fuck. Wouldn't be so bad if it didn't also take away health and armor. There was one level in particular, boosting in the air onto small dropping platforms and the thumbstick was finicky as hell. Not absolutely centered on "forward"? Prepare for a spaz boost to the side at a 45-90 degree angle.

Doom Eternal is significantly harder than Doom 2016, it's more fast paced and you need to juggle around with mechanics (like switching weapons to use to suit the occasion on the fly). I haven't played online shooters since roughly 2005, i was obsessed with Counter Strike 1.6 back then and haven't really bothered to play anything else. Online video games are time consuming, and time i don't have.

I've completed the game on Ultra Violence, and I don't know what to say. It's weird and all over the place.
From the colorful, kiddy UI and art direction which clashes with the whole demons theme.
Weird random story telling which doesn't make much sense and takes itself too seriously and is also all over the place.
Mario platformer rotating fire walls, 1ups, shooting turrents and weird enviromental hazards.
What a mess. Hodge podge of random things thrown together.

I'm might replay it on Nightmare too, but wtf were they thinking.

I think there was a patch that added the two iwads in order to play DOOM 1 and 2 from Doomslayer's PC for those who didn't have them already. If you still don't have them, you can add them manually in DOOMETERNAL/base/classicwads

Unfortunately the port is pretty bare-bones and there's some nasty ass motion blur or something similar going on.

After Doom Eternal, I can confidently say the power level ranking goes somethin like that.

I'm probably biased but I would say Samus should be way higher. The shit you deal with in some Metroid games is like planet destroying tier. I think she's up there with Doomguy. Also how is Raiden not higher than Hayabusa? MGR Raiden can flip Metal Gears.

Anyways DOOM Eternal may be my Game of the Generation. It's almost perfect. There's only a few small things I don't like. Regular melee not doing damage just feels kind of lame. I kinda get that they nerfed it to make Bloodpunch more relevant, but still it just feels pointless now.

Also is there a way to upgrade the Chainsaw I missed? Because I find it feels really nerfed not being able to use it on bigger enemies. It's more or less a glorified (or gorified I should say) reload button now.

Also I noticed a technical problem this game has. My wife had to reset our router for something, which I thought wouldn't be an issue since I was playing Campaign, but after the game disconnected it started freezing up every two seconds. When I paused and reconnected to Bethesda.net it started working fine again. Now I'm wondering if there's some fuckery going on.

Unlike 2016 which I loved, I didn't like Eternal much.

The low ammo count and over-reliance on rainbow chainsaw pinata was a bit aggravating. The game even has to constantly spawn weak fodder mobs for you to chainsaw. It feels dumb.
Going out of ammo all the fucking time and having to scan the area in hope of finding one of those otherwise useless monsters. I can't even chainsaw bigger weakened monsters either, which makes no sense and breaks the game flow.

It's so bloated, there's so many abilities to keep track of:
- The grenade types and flamy thingy could be downright removed we would lose nothing.
- Having the sword and chainsaw be separate thing is yet more bloat. They could have easily been one and the same (and would've solved the big gamey UI message that appears when you try to chainsaw a big mob and the game is like "lolno you can't").
- Enemy weak points are a waste of time. Some enemies are downright annoying and not fun at all to fight.
- The constant running out of ammo and the pinata thing, as I said already.
All of that in a game that's already insanely fast with projectile and mobs all over the place moving at the speed of light.
There's so much shit, This game gave me headaches toward the end. Doesn't help that I didn't like the boss battles either.

Also, is it just me or the mob AI is dumber than last time? I feel like they just run in a straight line after me and I have to be running away constantly from them in a circle. I don't remember 2016 combats being like this.

My other big issue is the 3d sound mixing: I get killed by monsters and projectiles I don't hear all the time. In FPS I'm used to detect things by sounds (CS, Quake, Overwatch and many many others have a strong sound element), but in Doom Eternal I can't hear shit. It's very frustrating, I get chip damage from unknown sources all the damn time.

Added to all that is the bad story and lack of good transition from 2016 to Eternal. It feels like I missed an episode inbetween.
I wasn't too fond of the random quake castle environments at the start of the game, when I was expecting a bombastic hell on earth intro stage. Tho you do get there eventually.
The story as a whole is meh, I prefered the 2016 style with Doomguy giving no shits whatsoever. Here there's too much dialogues and lore. I can understand wanting to develop Doomguy's origin a bit more... but frankly 2016 explanations were more than enough for me. It's no big deal tho.

The platforming level design wasn't too awful, so I let it pass. Hunting secrets was cool. So there's that.

In the end, the general memory this game gives me is that of a frustrating clusterfuck of fast colors and deafening bassy sounds that you have no control over. It didn't correct any of the little issues with 2016 but instead worsened and added new ones.

I think I'll give 2016 a replay later, to cleanse my palate from this mess.

Honestly with how Eternal has changed and improved combat (IMO), I don't think I could ever go back to 2016.

Hell, when I played the demo at Quakecon and then played 2016 soon after it felt off, slow, and less chaotic, lol.

Didn't pay much attention to those.
I think I saw some short fragments, like the shotgun meathook and that looked like a cool improvement, and some other minor things.

So I expected an improved Doom 2016, I couldn't have imagined that they'd make gameplay worse, especially in the first half of the game.

Opinions on this are really interesting. I'm loving it more and more each time I play it and attune myself to the new gameplay loop.

I don't understand the complaints about fodder demons and ammo now - this is so much better than only having ammo pickups and drops - you refill your shit by ripping and tearing. In 2016 if you ran out of your preferred ammo, you had to wait. Now? Get the fuck in there and refill it are you stupid lol?

Like now that I'm into the flow, I'm always moving with purpose and never running out of ammo, the second I do I just find one of the many "useless" demons to chainsaw which refills everything and often saves my ass by giving me a little bit of health.

Meathooking once upgraded gives you armour on your approach, so you can meathook guys and zoom in, take some shots get some armour, dash back out.

At first I thought the grenades and ice and fire were too much, but it's really not that bad. Now that I'm acclimated to the typical combat scenarios and basic gameplay loop, I find myself mixing those into combos more and more, my only issue is that when shit's getting hairy, it can be hard to quickly go from analog movement to Left D-Pad presses for equipment swapping. You have to stop moving to press it, or use some fucked up claw grip which I'm not doing.

I ran into a similar problem but thankfully there's button mapping in this unlike 2016.
My setup is:

RT: Fire
LT: Mod
LB: Jump
RB: WeaponWheel
Click Left Stick: Dash
Click Right Stick: Melee
^Dpad: Switch Mod
Y: Flame Belch
X: Chainsaw
A: Grenade/Cryo
B: Toggle Grenade

Having Mod toggle and Grenade toggle on seperate thumbs I think helps compartamentalize them and flow better for quick presses; at least in my mind. I think this control scheme is the best I could come up with for a controller in general. I guess the face buttons could be rearranged and not make much of a difference (I may swap Y and B actually) but I put the Chainsaw/Grenade options there because they're more situational.

I wasn't aware you could map things to L3 in-game, I might try just putting the Equipment swap on that because I am very accustomed to the default layout.

That's Dopefish! He was originally an enemy in the original Commander Keen, another ID franchise. He's appeared as easter eggs in a bunch of ID developed games and other non-ID games too.

Quake
Quake III
Duke Nukem 3D
Whacky Wheels
Hitman 2
Rise Of The Triad
Descent 3
DOOM
Dusk
Amid Evil
Doom 2016
Max Payne
Red Faction

And many others! This is probably one of the easiest Dopefish to find in a long time.

Only once in a blue moon tho.

99% of the time, a staggered heavy will give you a nope message when you try to chainsaw.

That would be the prowler. You can chaisaw them, but you need 3 chainsaw charges. You can mistake them from imps very easily in the heat of the battle, and dying due to this can be pretty frustrating. They should have been a 1-charge kill IMHO, they are not really dangerous and die easily otherwise.

I don't think I even once needed to chainsaw a large enemy in this game - all my chainsaw pips went to fodder demons to recharge the ammo I was taking down the big guys with. Then once you get the sword it's like oh, here's my big guy chainsaw if I really need a quick out.

That may because you don't have enough fuel. You always recharge one bar that's solely meant for fodder to alleviate situations where you have no ammo. Lord knows there have been moments where I panicked and tried sawing heavies when I had no fuel, lol.

Yeah. Idk why none of the default control schemes use LS/L3 but It's certainly a good option. If you can readjust your muscle memory though I would highly recommend my setup or something similar. Having the main/alt attack and movement options in the default position (thumbs on sticks and fingers on the shoulders) makes it way smoother once you get acclimated to it as you can aim and move simultaneously like 90% of the time.

Despite all they did to force constant weapon switching, once at "full power" I found myself plowing through the two master levels using the double barrel for the majority of it. Gun is too much fun to use and with the enemy damage effects it's even more satisfying. =P

yo nikana, do i have another opportunity to get the super shotgun in D2016 if i missed it the first time during the campaign?

There's 2 spots you can find it. The second spot is more along the beaten path in a level or two after the one you can first get it in.

Just explore and you should be able to find it.

It wasn't on a 30 second cooldown timer though, you had to ration it's use. Here it's absolutely essential for refilling mid battle. You could get screwed for some weapons if you weren't careful about your ammo in 2016 IIRC, but here you can refill any ammo type other than the BFG I think in any skirmish.

Only if you didn't buy the ammo upgrades for the suit. Also at max ammo upgrade you had 7 slots for the chainsaw so you would have enough for 7 full ammo refills from tiny enemies, so not having a recharge shouldn't be a issue unless you waste it. Plus like I said there was a ammo boost rune you could get, when mastered would even make BFG ammo RNG drops, which just strait up broke the game.

Of course I'm just basing this on my experience replaying the game last week in anticipation of this, but I never really payed attention to ammo yet I never didn't have ammo when I wanted to use a weapon, and always had chainsaw uses to spare, but I also got all ammo upgrades first before health and armor. 🤷‍♂️

Also that's my only real gripe with ammo in this game, ammo upgrades for shells and rockets compared to bullets (unchanged from 2016) and plasma was a bit overkill.

If you dont have enough gas, yes. So you can't abuse the chainsaw.
Welp... yet another arbitrary limitation rule that enforce a single play style and doesn't benefit the game (staggered heavies are dead anyways, so why limit what we can do to them?). I can chainsaw fodders just fine with the free cooldown so what's different? But no, have fun having to keep track of fuel among the already overstuffed combat and cooldowns and ammo and shit.

I stand my point.

You want to limit what you can do so there is actual strategy in the game VS having no real game play loop. This is by no means an arbitrary limitation rule. It doesn't force a single play style either. Its up to you where you use your gas on an enemy that takes 3 pips or 1. Just because you used your gas on something else doesn't magically make the system bad. Learn the systems and you will be fine.

Again like many others, sounds like you want a power trip fantasy and not an FPS with real mechanics. Not the games fault its not catering to your wants.

Sure, it's not like ammo was necessarily a problem after upgrading yourself, but I do remember many fights where I would run of out rockets and just not be able to use the weapon for a while, in DE the second I am out of ammo for something, I just saw someone and I'm topped off again, and I have really been enjoying this change.
