The tinfoil hat-wearing part of me wants to think that we were being told we'd each get $1000+ so that we'd keep going to stores and spending cash even if things were dire, because hey, $1000 is coming "in a couple weeks."

lmao of course I'd say some shit like that 5 minutes before the deal gets announced

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
This isn't gonna do what it's supposed to do. A lot of people are probably gonna go buy a new phone or a TV or some other stupid shit
That is what it is supposed to do. It is supposed to keep the economic system alive. If people don’t spend, then nobody gets paid. Even luxury expenses afforded by this bill will help revitalize the industries that were affected by this pandemic.

I am gonna try to do the smart thing with this money and pay off some debt. I was struggling for months paying off a loan I had to take for a car repair. Only just recently paid it off, because It was high interest, so I was paying huge chunks of my check into it, that I wasn't able to make a dent in my credit cards. I think I'm gonna try to eliminate some of those.

That is kind of the point, just like Bush’s stimulus plan, it’s suppose to get Americans to spend money on stuff. You can’t tell them what to spend it on, so you’re hoping they spend it on something they need. If it’s not rent or bills, then the next practical thing might be a better phone since we all pretty much depend on it, then maybe a TV.

You certainly don’t want them to save it though.

I understand that the point of stimulus money is to be spent. It's a tough situation since the infusion needs to happen ASAP, and you obviously can't dictate where the money goes.

But it's not Apple or Amazon that's getting crushed by #socialdistancing, it's local small businesses and everyone they employ. And since everything local is pretty much shut down and will still be when the checks come, I'd guess that very little of this cash will go where it's needed most to actually....you know....stimulate the economy.

I'm planning to hold the money unless I have a sudden need come up. I bought around $700 in groceries and supplies during all this shit, so that will cover part of the recent outflow from my prepping. Of course, in the end I'll be eating that food and using that stuff anyway so it is not really a loss, just a shifted cost.

I don’t get the “the money isn’t helping small businesses therefore it’s pointless” line of talk. Sounds like pointless concern trolling.

People are out of work. They are having trouble paying rent and mortgage. They need money.

Whether that money is just going to make Amazon more money is entirely bedside the point. There is literally nothing to be done about it. We have to focus on taking care of people on a personal level first. If you want to focus on wealth redistribution you need to wait until there isn’t a global pandemic.

Unless he has custody and can claim them as dependents, he's SOL.

The money isn't just being given to people who need it because they're out of work. It's arbitrarily being given to everyone who made less than $100k in 2018. Many of whom aren't in any kind of a tough situation and aren't planning to be.

I'm not overly critical of the move, anyway. It's necessary, since a ton of people in the US don't have any short term savings. And I'm certainly not arguing for 'wealth redistribution'. I just cynically think a ton of people are going to make luxury purchases with the money, which is a waste when you consider who's most fucked in this situation..

Without that money we're going to lose our house thanks to CA's lockdown. So don't assume everyone is making money right now.

I feel for you, and wish you all the best, but I also literally said it's a necessary move for just such situations

Did you see the other thread about what people will do with the money?

Because it's pretty much exactly what you just said.

Is there a calculator? I already filed my 2019 taxes. Are they going to use that or 2018?
The fact that we don't know is kinda frustrating. Leading up to the official announcement, we were seeing claims that they would use 2018 since not everyone filed 2019 yet, though people who did file 2019 would have those used.

Is that right? Who knows. It's not like the official word seems to exist anywhere.

So we’re going to punish the people who filed early.

The fact I'm below poverty level and not getting jack shit because I didn't file is frustrating especially since me and the person I care for (who makes too little he doesn't file either) could really use it.

I still support this move fully. I just hope the people who really need it can get it.

This bill is bullshit. I have a lot of family that isn't getting shit from this due to making over 75k each. They're livid at the fact that big businesses and corporations are getting all these tax breaks and cash infusions while they get jack shit.

Honestly this should have been done for everyone or at least make the state a consideration since 75k in Alabama is NOT the same as 75k in California.

They said they were going off the 2018 filings because not everyone has filed 2019 yet. Those who filed get $1200.

Those amounts would start getting phased out at adjusted gross income of $75,000, based on 2018 tax returns.

The good news is that they already have an amendment to be voted on to replace the language. If what they describe is true it should be fixed.

The market dropped as soon as the hold-up happened, less than 15 min before closing, so a little part of me thinks this is staged drama so they can buy low today to sell high tomorrow after it passes tonight.

At least I hope so. I actually bought back in today in anticipation of it passing tonight and getting a quick 8-15% return. Volume shifted to buying too, so I'm not alone.

Looks like some of you are gonna gift some of us non-Americans some launch titles.
In unrelated news, VII R is around the corner.
In other unrelated news, my DM is open.

Seriously, I hope it helps out. Even a little. Put it to good use, whatever that looks like to you. Stay safe.

Well poor people who didn't file their taxes like me are fucked too. So yeah I'm not exactly happy about it either.

The money should only go to people who NEED it right now imo.

Crappy.
They should promote people to file taxes every year with a small incentive like they do in Canada for poor people (the GST rebate).

I don’t get any due to the salary limits. Oof.
If I was getting it though, I’d probably buy my first laptop.
