I haven't played this, but it's weird to me hearing they made Nemesis scripted. I figured Mr.X was just an experiment in how to do Nemesis...

Yea I think a lot of us figured Nemesis was gonna be Mr. X on steroids.

And he was...for one or two areas, before they restrict him to boss fights and RE6/Uncharted esque chases.

I think that they encountered difficulties because of level design.

If the rooms are large and open, the game would give you ample of room to dodge and evade Nemesis' attacks, but the game would feel less claustrophobic because of the large and open rooms.

Imagine having to escape from a creature who stalks you, runs at you, fires freakin' missiles at you while you are running on a corridor - it would be frustrating as hell.

Mister X worked wonderfully in RE2make because the tight corridors and small rooms are balanced via his walking speed (you can outrun him) and his reach (only a single slow melee attack). Mister X serves as a way for the game to tell you 'move it slowpoke', as well as make you tense.

Since Nemesis can run, fire ranged attacks, use his tentacles to bring you close etc., having to also fight in small and tight corridors would be insanely difficult. Could it work? Maybe, via a masterstroke of level design, but it was apparent that Capcom decided that it wasn't worth the hassle, especially since almost all areas besides the first act in the streets of Racoon City are almost never visited again. You can see how much care Capcom had put in the level design in Racoon city - you could theoretically evade Nemesis infinitely via the way the buildings intertwine with areas like the Donut shop acting as a gateway between the parts of the street which are cut off via barricades. But since Nemesis can outrun you, run and hide isn't an option like in RE2make - you eventually have to fight him, and since you can't deceive or dissuade him from attacking you (like you do with the Xenomorph in Alien Isolation), what's the point of designing the game around a notion of cat and mouse when the mouse can't successfully run away?

Also, imagine having to fight Hunters as well as Nemesis, or having to evade him and drein deimos at the same time. It would be so hard almost everyone would give up.

So, in the end, Capcom would either have to eliminate almost all enemies and make it Nemesis and Zombies (something like Alien Isolation where you only have the Alien and the cyborgs to deal with), or give us variety with Hunters, drein deimos, zombie dogs and also use Nemesis.

I think Capcom did the right call.

And before you say "Hey, they made it work in the original!", I humbly remind you that even then, Nemesis was more or less scripted there as well. And when you would put him down, he stayed down until his next scripted appearance. So, in the RE3make, Capcom would have to make him stay down 'for good', instead of just stunning him for a few seconds.

So, again, maybe it could work but it would take a lot of effort and a lot more time than Capcom wanted to give for this project.

I agree with you completely. When Nemesis appears, it's scary because he's better than us at everything, hell, in normal mode he can easily 2 punch you to death, having almost the entire game be like that wouldnt be good, you wouldnt be able to do anything without nemesis behing right behind you the entire time or actually hitting you.
He appears less times, but when he does, it's intense.

I was scrolling through my ps4 library and realized that I own RE6, yet have never played it. Probably picked it up for 10 bucks during a sale and never even installed it.
It seems to have a pretty negative reputation, but I'm gonna try it out today.

It's the best Resident Evil! Was even better back in the day when you could play coop and at various points in the game youd work with two other sets of players playing coop for an hour or so before parting ways.

Best tip is story wise play the campaigns in order.

I know opinions are subjective, but saying RE6 is the best RE is objectively wrong.

I know at least a few people who like RE6 the most.

But that's normal. I mean... if you ask 10 RE fans to make their own top 5 of the franchise, you'll most probably get 10 different answers.

Finished it twice already. Playing with RE1 STARS costume Jill feels right.

Excluding RE4, this is the best RE game I’ve played. Tight, minimal backtracking, tense, tactical and great boss encounters.

I've been playing with the "Definite Classic" today and it looks really good, that plus the "no visible damage", "zoom out Jill" and "60 fps from afar zombies" have made my 2nd playthrough as enjoyable and fresh as the first one.

Says a lot about the actual budget of the game, as the only other game which reuses that much stuff from previous titles was Revelations 2.

Again, not that makes RE3 bad, it just could've been even better with a little more care and development resources thrown in.

Capcom wanted the bag from the very start of this fiscal year. I think if this got an October release date it would have had more to offer.

One of my major complaints about RE2R (besides the 2nd Run sucking) was how weak the characters were. I didn't feel any connection to them at all, and there was no sense of camaraderie between anyone--this was a massive step down from the original RE2.

RE3R did a much better job with making the cast work well off of each other. In general, RE3R has more personality than both RE2R and RE3 Classic. The only character that is a significant downgrade is, unfortunately, Nemesis. He fucking sucks in the remake. Total pussy, and a bit of a slut.

Unless you play on hardcore, and/or you're taking your sweet time examining every nook and cranny, don't expect more than 6-7 hours of gameplay at most.

Yeah man RE2 remake cast just lacked any sense of chemistry at all. Script was garbage, not one moment of them being concerned or anything. I do like Nemesis' dog form on a design level because of the rags of clothing still being attached on his skin and stuff. Not gonna actually defend what Capcom did to him though, I thought he was T type not G type? lmao.

I like the character design a lot! But yeah, as a stalker character, he sucks because Capcom broke him down to nothing more than a set-piece. He's basically Ustanak (sp?) from RE6.

And his transformation into a G monster was... misguided. I'm not gonna harp on Capcom getting the lore wrong, but it's just another thing to add to the list of things they got wrong with Nemesis in the remake.

Guess we agree to disagree. I found the characterization phenomenal in RE2make.

Leon's voice actor plays his part amazingly, and his facial expressions are the best I've seen in a Capcom game. When he meets Marvin and says "Leon Kennedy. There was another officer but … I couldn't … (half-whispers) I couldn't …" you can feel his guilt and frustration in not managing to save his colleague.

Marvin's last conscious words when he says, "I tried, Leon ... but I couldn't stop it," are also an indication of what kind of a person he was. He saw his mission as his duty, trying to save Raccoon City. When he fails because he's succumbing to the virus, he gives the mantle to Leon, hoping that the rookie will succeed where he had failed.

Kendo? My God … what a huge departure from his role as an oblivious ass-clown in the original. His pain, his confusion his anger at seeing all hell breaking loose in Racoon City made me want to reach out for him. "HOW! DID THIS! HAPPEN?? HUH!?!?!?" Great scene at showing you that in Umbrella's quest of absolute power and STARS attempt to shut them down, it's the little people who will always pay the price. Amazing scene.

And Leon's scenes with Ada are also very well done. Leon's writing showed me that when done right, Lawful Good can be an awesome, inspiring alignment. "Helping people like them? That's why I joined the force!" his heart is young and pure, unable to comprehend the viciousness of the corporate world, and is striving to do the right thing. I like to think that Ada is attracted to him because he reminded her of her past self, when she was something more than a backstabbing selfish super-spy.

RE3make does a really good job as well with the characters, although I think RE2make did it better.

Ugh Jill is amazing in this remake. Went from a 10/10 cutie to a 10/10 cutie with a fun personality. I hope we see her again in RE8 but we'll prolly get some more new characters that nobody gives a fuck about. And Carlos! What a bro. (Altho RPD section shoulda been Jill, wtf)

As for the game itself, I unfortunately still prefer the original. Its a decent game and even outright good at times. Certainly the boss fights, the street exploration, and the hospital exploration were highlights. Dodging feels really good. But it seriously lacked puzzles and cut out major parts of the og. Will replay on Nightmare at some point, but no bueno.

You are talking about performances. The important character interactions were not great in RE2R.

The Leon and Ada duo is ruined in the remake. Right off the bat, Ada is a complete cunt to Leon telling him to "get out of the station" as if he isn't trapped in there. She continues to be a bitch to Leon over things he can't control, and her cover as an FBI agent does nothing to humanize her. In the original, Ada is more sympathetic with her "looking for her boyfriend" cover, while never resorting to being a bitch to Leon. It's understandable that Leon is going out of his way to protect a civilian over a VERY suspicious FBI agent who does nothing but berate him.

In general, character motivations are just... off. They are far more defined in the original. For example:

-Annette has no motivation at all in the remake. What is she trying to do? Contain... G? What? She doesn't give two shits about her daughter and is just aimlessly running around for no reason. In the original, she has a very clear goal--find Sherry before her husband does.

Speaking of Birkin, remember how well the original RE2 builds up his character. First, Leon/Claire see a terrified girl running from something. Eventually, once Claire catches up and meets her, Sherry tells her that a monster is after her and calling out her name. We hear it roar, knowing it is close but not sure where. Soon after, you meet its g-spawn after it bursts through Brian Irons chest in THE BEST KILL in the series (something the remake didn't pull off), splitting him in half. Now its time to fight this g-spawn, which isn't even Birkin himselg. When you finally see Birkin in its full form, there is a sufficient amount of build up to what will be the main monster you must defeat in the story.

How is Birkin handled in the remake? He just randomly jumps you. No build up. He just jumps you, and you fight him. That's shit.

Brian Irons is another character that the remake ruined. Again, the original RE2 build him up very well and gave him motivation. Before meeting Irons in the original, we have already read multiple files about how disturbed he is--we even learn that STARS was investigating his past of being a rapist. Before we can even enter his office, we hear a women's scream coming from there. Then we finally meet him...

How is this done in the remake? Irons just starts shooting at you and kidnaps Sherry for no reason. He wants her pendant... why? Who cares! He's CRAZY!!! Lame.

I could go on, but the worst stumble was Leon and Claire's relationship. In the original, they keep in contact, but they also work together to escape and save Sherry. Leon takes Sherry to safety while readying the train to escape while Claire makes the cure to save Sherry. There's more at steak, and the countdown feels way more dramatic a result. While Claire needs to take out another form of Birkin before making it to the train, Leon gets stuck in a fight with Super Tyrant... then once they make it onto the train and save Sherry, all three of them work together to stop the train and escape.

Pretty much all details that made RE2's climax so dramatic are gone in the remake. And to top it all of, and show how fucking stupid the writing in the remake is, Sherry starts joking to Claire and Leon--a character who didn't even know she existed until a few minute prior-- that they should adopt her. This is after her mother died before her eyes. This is an attempt to be cute and force a last minute bond between these three strangers, and I think it backfires. It's not earned at all.


RE2make is a fantastic game, but it's not well-written. RE games never had great writing, but RE2 was always the most concise, with the best characters and payoffs. The remake scrapped this amazing base for a narrative that feels rushed and incomplete.

I though it would be impossible, but Ueda Masami returned to work on this.
You know, he left Capcom when Clover Studio was disbanded and went to PlatinumGames along with other Capcom people.

Weird how they left it out with RE2 Remake with only the Original as DLC.
I guess that survey they did had people mentioning how important the Soundtrack is to Resident Evil so they got Masami back for RE3

Can't be fucked making a tier list but the top three are Remake, RE4 and RE3. Not even a big fan of RE4 but I cannot deny its pedigree, I also really like RE0 but I'd rate it on the lower end of the series.

Hunters are insta-killed with a hand grenade. And if two are even somewhat close together, it will take both of them down.

Yeah, I got lucky. Had one in my inventory and used it from beyond the door in the linen room. Got them both, two for one. Best moment in the game for me, by far. I did not want to go into that room with both of them in there!!!

I finished Leon and Sherrys campaigns. I just couldn’t bring myself to finish the rest. Game was TERRIBLE.

Beat the game today and really enjoyed it, kind of like the shorter aspect of the story. Really liked that they brought back the unlimited ammo runs. I always liked going back through the games with unlimited ammo and wrecking zombies and baddies left and right. I haven't played the MP at all but I will give it a try eventually.

I noticed a damage scale difference between Jill and Carlos. Enemies like the hunters were easier with Jill than with Carlos( though most of his could be taken out with grenades Easily). Some Zombies were straight up harder with Carlos and he dealt with more swarms. Hunters taking a couple rounds of the mag was a bit strange at times too.

I think it's the different damage range between weapons than damage scale. You normally don't fight a hunter or licker with a low range weapon like a handgun or an assault rifle (besides it's a really powerfull one shot gun like a magnum), because theses f*ckers are fast and can evade your shots, and bullets don't stunt them so easily (also, the assault rifle is only 32 bullets max without upgrade, so you lose time reloading before taking down a hunter if you don't hit it weak point). With Jill you have the shotgun (at this point, an upgraded shotgun) and the granade launcher, so it's easy to take down a hunter with these, you can even damage two or more with one shot if they are close.

And unlike the classics, you may take a couple of magnum rounds to kill a hunter if you don't hit its weak point (the mouth).

My first playthrough was 6 hours on standar, and I took my time in exploring any inch, reading all the notes, see all cut scenes, but my second playthrough was 3 hours, on nightmare. it could have be much less, but I died too much and I was using auto save continues.

I just got 1000g on the Xbox version after 30 hours. I beat the game like 8 times.
I still wanna do a "legit" nightmare run. That mode is fucked up, too much shit is thrown at you.

Apart from the top 3 I actually prefer the Evil Within games. If anyone hasn't played them, please do. They are so good!
