I've been on the verge of picking this up, but can't seem to find any answers to if the dungeons are either more streamlined or otherwise less tedious this time around?

I loved the original game overall, but almost gave up on it numerous times due to the dungeons all outstaying there welcome, I'd slog my way through by telling myself this must be the final floor! then find the fucking stairs to the next bit. And it's not like I don't enjoy grinding, got the true ending and spent dozens of hours in Momentus. But those fucking dungeons were just too damn long.

I figured I'd love playing a NG+ and just focusing on the social stuff, but I also hear Golden doesn't do shit with your completed save so I might end up having to slog through it all over again. arrrg!

So far so good. 8 hours of play.

They've revamped the battle system and added stuff to the dungeons to the point where it almost feels like a whole new game. No, wait it's more like...More like the developers weren't happy with their work and they wanted a do-over on P5. "Let us try again." There were all sorts of things they must have wanted to add before and couldn't, as well as all sorts of complaints they wanted to address. So now there's quality of life stuff like making confidant availability and location more obvious, and there's tutorials for which useful activities you can do that won't cause time to progress. But there's also crazy new shit like will seeds and grappling hooks and arena battle challenges and a Cait sith persona and what have you. Is Cait Sith in FF7 remake part 1? Dunno, but I'm playing P5R and he's in that! Guns are totally crazy now and are saving my ass on hard mode. They might be OP?

I'm at the final boss battle of the 1st dungeon. When I gave up in frustration over how bad the localization was in P5 vanilla, it was on the 6th dungeon. I'm only seeing minor, forgivable dialogue problems now, but I think the translation at the start of the game was always okay, and it got worse with extended play. But I can say that lots of new dialogue has been recorded to go with the new gameplay elements like introducing grappling hooks and the new party member, so it feels to me like some of the babel fish sentences or moments where characters talk past each other could end up being fixed or rewritten. The general vibe playing this game is that Atlus went out of their way to fix things that weren't even broken, so do I have some hope for the broken localization.

As someone who has never played a persona game do i need to have played the others a la kingdom hearts to understand the story for it to make sense? I have heard good things and i'm looking for another long jrpg to keep me entertained as i adored ninokuni II and dragon quest 11.

No, Persona series are similar to FF and Tales series, each game has its own contain story. Also Persona series are different than games like DQ, because SMT/Persona series are at their heart a dungeon crawlers, keep that in mind.

So I should go ahead and pick up Royal if I haven't played the initial release, right? I'm thinking of doing this now in the spring/summer as there's going to be more free time due to the quarantine.

I posted this yesterday in another thread, but I'll post it here as well.

Absolutely play this. We're talking about 130 hours vs about 100, and a ton of quality of life features. The original is one of my favorite games ever, and the huge length makes it the perfect game for staying inside right now. Just about the only reason to play the original at this point would be price, but the game already has so much value that I'd just go for the best version right now. The only other question is if you'll appreciate the gameplay and story. If you don't mind turn-based JRPGs and you generally like JRPG stories or Anime, I'd say go for it.

I have a basic question.

Are the dungeons still way, way too long? Couldn’t hack it in the original. If that fundamental element hasn’t changed, I won’t pick it up.

Having a hard time trying to find the steelbox version to Brazil. Will wait until avaliable.

I tryed looking everywhere for it, can’t find it, nor the Collectors Edition (which would probably cost something like 2.000 bonoros ... sooo, no deal, no dice)

If I'm not mistaken, and someone correct me if I am:

The worst thing about the long dungeons was running out of magic, because it didn't replenish at save points. In the original, you can get something from the doctor that solves that issue, and after that things get much better. In the new game, I would guess that is still an option later in the game, but you meet someone right after the first dungeon that helps you with magic as well. If that's the issue that you had with levels being too long, it should be better in this game. If you just meant the length itself, I'm sure they're even longer now.

Here's a guide for the original game:

I'm really enjoying the upgrade, Royal got some awesome refinements, BUT....

Okumura's Palace turned from shit to UTTER GARBAGE.... damn

It's still long as fuck, boring, has one of the worst story arcs of the game and to make the shit fest complete, Okumura's boss battle was made EVEN WORSE than the Vanilla version

That's Capra Demon/ Bed of Chaos level of shit

I will be honest with you, I never understood the complain for that dungeon, for me it wasn’t that long especially compare to game like Strange Journey and I still managed to reach treasure room in one setting.

Ive only played P4G but ive been holding off on P5 because a lot of people say it was a slog to play through. Does P5R change any of that o its just extra content on top of everything else?

For me P5 my favourite Persona game, also if enjoyed P4G’s structure then you would also enjoy P5 as well.

There is one part in particular about that dungeon I can't stand and have to use a guide. That being said, my least favorite dungeon is probably the last one as it goes on too long, but that's just me. Still love the game though. I'm about 40 hours into Royal and on pace to platinum it.

I dont mind long dungeons as along as I can still recruit demons. I highly enjoyed SMTIV Apocalypse but I HATED its last dungeon, when the game first came out the level cap was 99 and when I reach that part I was already at level 99, so fighting was useless and you couldn't recruit any demon on that dungeon for some reason. so....not only fighting was pointless because I was already max level but also I couldn't recruit any demon and the dungeon was looooooong, to me that was worst dungeon I experienced any SMT/Persona series.

Yeah, the 5th dungeon is manageable in one run, but it seems to me that the overall quality is worse than the others, thematically and structurally.

The setting seems incoherent when compared to all the others, the music is meh, it feels like there are less Personas to recruit, and the specific mechanics are uninspired at best.

I mean, until this point in the game we’ve already gotten the paintings puzzle, the cameras and giant lock ar the museum, tomb raiding... and better yet, we still haven’t reached the amazing Casino level.
Okumura’s feels out of place amidst the great levels of Persona 5.

I mean, Shido’s is also quite large, but at least it has a lot of character banter, some other tweaks that makes it entertaining and 2 main antagonists boss battles.

Have they done anything about mementos money farming with Pulinpa ? That's one of most stupid things in base version as it makes all the loot pretty pointless

Just finished the vanilla story, now I'm into Royal expansion. I'm really liking the new palace, it seems something taken from Nier Automata.

I guess the expansion has something like 15 hours of new content, adding that to the stuff Atlus put during the vanilla story, I'd say Royal adds around 20h of new stuff.

But I have to say... feeling a little depressed now that I'm near the end...

So for crazy reason yesterday I was signed out of PSN and had to reset my password... which I did, but this situation made me realize something that could be a major issue.

If you are not connected to PSN and you have any type of DLC then you can not play the game at all. Like seriously, what kinda crap is that?

I am so mad about this. I didn’t like Maruki so I didn’t prioritize maxing him over other people. I can’t do the extra content without replaying the game now.
I can see how that can be frustrating, especially playing the game for the first time without knowing Maruki is one of the new characters in Royal.

Sorry bumping but I am so freaking angry with this game right now and need to rant! Just done the 5th palace and that shit is absolute fucking bullshit. I have zero problem in the original game but I was so close to beating the crap out of my PlayStation and firing it out the window.

I spent 12 hours on that palace. The palace itself was a breeze but the boss fight is ridiculous. I lost count how many times I died but I had had enough so decided to quit to the safe room...y'know the one right before the boss OR SO I THOUGHT! Nope it was another one so I had to do the entire bloody section where you jump through space. I have never used the fast forward feature so much.

I finally got back to the boss and the bullshit started again. I tried turning it down to easy and crafting the highest Persona I could which I think was lvl 90 Messiah. That didn't help but one of the times I did get to the final wave and had just half a health heart left on that fucking creepy robot. Yet another half an hour wasted.

I was ready to just abandon the game after putting about 60 hours in to it but I have it one more try. I realized the enemies have multiple weaknesses and just went to town on the tincan freaks. So fired off some items to damage for those that didn't have the skills. Got the baton pass up and knocked the rusty idiots on their metal asses.

Finished it with 15 mins left. Holy crap I have never felt so relieved to save a game. I had nightmares last night of this game. It's absolute crap and I doubt I will ever be replaying this again. If Atlus were gonna nerf it they would've done it by now.

Rant over! Sorry. Did I mention this boss is bullshit? Fuck Okumura!

I see lots of people complaining about this dungeon and the boss, when I was going through it I was waiting the part that got people so frustrated, but I never experienced it so I thought I was missing something. Even with the boss I was not really struggling with it. I guess I never the understood what was frustrating about it.

They would not last on a mainline SMT game.

I actually think they broke the game by making it too easy and giving you too many powerful options and that soured my experience a bit. I've played all the persona games a bunch tho, and some other SMT games too. I especially disliked that you can't get the free dlc costumes without them being bundled with OP dlc personas. You gotta be careful not to fuse them if you don't want them, and even if you are, sometimes a fusion accident can leave you stuck with an OP dlc persona

Yeah, SMT bosses will give you much, much tougher time, they always one step away to completely turn entire battle in their favour.
Stephen gave me more a challenge over every single Persona game to date. Also Satan in dds 2, they weren't hard per se but they were just better bosses comparatively. It could also be we are just used to fusing balanced demons/shadows teams.
