DF Direct: Crysis Remastered Reaction - Will PCs Melt? Can Consoles Cope? What About Switch?

John, Rich and Alex convene for a brand new Digital Foundry Direct, where the team discuss the monumental news that Crysis is returning, remastered by Crytek and Saber Interactive and coming to PC, Xbox One, PS4 and... Switch? What should we expect from the new game? What kind of technologies are available from Crytek to power it? Can Switch really deliver a decent port? You have questions, we have questions... and some answers.

so much excitment for 10 year old game which you can play right now, people need to be aware that remasters just to get money from consumers at minimal cost of development, though remakes is different story,

Well, better cheap remasters than shit ass new games with almost zero effort and expensive as fuck, aka Game of the Year Pokemon Shiled/Sword.

I really hope they either only have the Suit Modes work like in the PC original or at least have both way as an option.
because I really don't like the new way the suit works in the sequels and the console port of 1.

switching modes on PC almost turned into an intense combo system once you're good at the game and you get into the flow.
and the new version they made restricted your options.

games that NEED a remaster are exciting, and Crysis is one such game.
even on modern PCs you struggle to hold 60fps because the game wasn't build with the hardware in mind that the industry went with.

also on Windows 10 or 64bit Windows and modern GPU drivers the game has massive issues.

that's just proves that pc lack new games also it will be on 7 year old consoles so don't really get your point about hardware in mind when you develop something for 4 different platforms.
it's hard for me to understand how someone can be excited for old game just for better gfx, specially when it's probably gonna cost 60$.

what I mean by that hardware point I made is that Crysis was developed at a time where PC hardware was getting faster and faster in clock speeds, and Crysis was developed with the idea in mind that as CPUs get faster and faster clock rates, the game will run better and better.

but right at the time the game came out, the industry shifted from pushing clock speeds to going more and more multi-core and multithreaded.

Cryengine 2 was not made with that in mind, and so on today's hardware, which basically usually still runs at the same speeds as the CPUs did back when the game released, the game still has performance issues.

today's consoles have way better CPUs than those the game was originally designed for, but they work completely differently, so a more modern approach is needed to port them, and at the same time this new engine will massively boost performance on PC as well.

Yeah it will be interesting to see it side by side with the original and how this new one performs.
Really appreciate the work these guys do.

It will be fine, nvidia isn´t around this time (I think) and they receive no benefit if the console port needs a Pro or an X in order to play with decent performance.

The only version I've played is the 360 port backwards compatible on Xbox One. It's not amazing in terms of resolution and performance but with the X1 BC boost it runs at a mostly solid 30 FPS. I quite enjoyed it along with Crysis 2. 3 looks great even on last gen but I never finished it because it didn't seem to do much new.

I would like to see the base X1/PS4 target 1080p/60fps (maybe 900p for X1 if framerate requires it), because another 30fps port would just kind of defeat the purpose (although I'm gonna assume the Switch version will be 30fps, which is fine I guess).

The enchanced consoles should be like 1440p or more with 60fps. Honestly I'm gonna wait and see if they decide to make a next gen version too; or at the very least wait and play the X1 version enhanced on Xbox SX.

I'm very curios to see their implementation of RTX... on Switch.
Back in the day, Crytek was able to implement a very clever and pretty good solution for 3D with minimum hardware cost (SSRS), I don't have many doubts they could implement their rtx solution on current gen hardware.
Warface was based on Cryengine 3, I presume it use an old version of Cryengine on Switch.

That would be true if Crysis was good game. It was pretty much designed to showcase their engine which Crytek wanted to license to other devs.

Read the guy I quoted. He is criticizing remasters in general, not necessarily Crysis.

It will be interesting to see how the switch is gonna handle that.

I found some funny pics regarding this, I hope nobody gets offended, it's a joke.

NeoGAF tech Bat Signal!

Anyone know what version of CryEngine Crytek is using? I know the Switch *can* run CryEngine obviously with "Warface"....

I do wonder if they're going to attempt ray tracing for the Switch version. Apparently the port engine can do it and therefore wouldn't
rely on hardware to do it?!

Thanks

I'm hoping this is a lead up to a new Crysis targetting next gen, and especially with the all SSD next gen, more in the style of the open world 1/Warhead than the more linear concessions in the next two titles.

Sure gonna watch, thanks.

As a sidenote, I wonder if they gonna keep the airship section of the game. Not that I care much about it though.

Cryengine 5.0 or above. 'Using the lastest Cryengine'. Can't confirm the software ray tracing part of Switch, will vary between the optimization.

Because Cryware is not in a great place financially and needs to have as many potential sales as possible.
You mean 'Crytek' right? They're just remastering one single game, not the entire collection or even making sequel. And Saber is not making the work alone, is a collaboration between Saber and Crytek, so maybe they're cutting cost by doing that. Remaster usually are more profit because the game in particular are already done and increasing the plataform increase the revenue.

If I correct cheap chain is:

Remaster > Collection > Remake/Reboot > Sequel.

Of course, the remaster quality will play a huge role here. And of course, others factors like companies helping at the cost, but nothing to do with this remaster.

From what i understand, the main bottleneck of the original game is it's own engine and how it doesn't make use of multicore CPUs. So it's not like the graphics are something any current system can't handle. Could be in a similar situation with GTA4, though not quite as bad.
