Watched Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge.
It was pretty terrible IMO. Ugly art style, underwhelming and boring fights, scorpion sort of goes away for a lengthy chunk of the movie and the pacing is so fast it sort of feels like an extended episode of some TV show instead of an actual moive.

I watched the 1979 remake of Nosferatu. Great movie. I hadn't seen it in a long time. Its directed by Werner Herzog and starring Klaus Kinski and Bruno Ganz.

Watched the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie tonight, bought the blu ray 3 pack a few weeks ago.

Pretty fun, and for my money the practical effect still hold up really well, the suits look good and I love the charm of the stop motion stuff with the baby turtles and Splinter.

I watched The Secret of the Ooze after, which I watched way more times as a kid. I think I like the first one a bit more but the costumes were a bit better in the second one.

I completely forget everything about the 3rd one except that I went with my mom to see it in theatres when it came out lol.

Have you watched the 3rd one again now?
I remember watching it as a kid at the cinemas and hating it straight away back then. I have it on blu ray but haven't ever bothered to watch it.

The first is my favourite because of it's darker and more serious tone.

No I needed to go to bed, I might watch it tonight if I don't play FF7Remake.

I remember liking it but I would have liked anything with the Turtles on it back then. It probably will be the worst one I'm sure.

I agree about the first one, I also prefer Cory Feldman as Donatello lol

While not a movie i rewatched Carnivale.

Amazing themes of good versus evil while not afraid to get horribly dark at times. The episode where the prostitutes soul gets trapped to be raped forever is still super messed up. It was a beautiful show to look at with some strong performances.

It's one of the few shows I've seen that feels like it can get as dark as Berserk. It's a shame there was never a third season.

I like most of Hitchcock's Hollywood movies, but I've always prefered Vertigo as my favorite. I also think North by Northwest might go on for a little too long. Psycho is great also, but feels very dated compared to a lot of his others and other modern suspense movies.

I watched Rear Window a few months back and absolutely loved it - check it out if you haven’t yet.

I'm compiling what movies I'm going to rewatch during the summer. I have seasonal movies I watch every year that I identify with the seasons. I hate the summer, but I love watching movies during the summer. Will post my list once it's compiled, I think I'm gonna start this week even though it's not technically summer yet.

Absolutely love the darker tone of the first, and the Secret of the Ooze kinda carries it forward a touch (ie. Splinter coming down on the turtles for mocking Shreddrar's dying moments). Of course, it was the height of the brand's power and they really felt like they needed to keep it kid-friendly. They probably got some feedback on the first movie that suggested the more mature themes were lost on their audience. *shrugs*

I hated the third movie when I saw it. It felt like they took everything that the first two movies built upon and decided to just ignore it for a time traveling romp. But being a kid who grew up with the lovable cartoon, the movie story's direction didn't really make sense to me anyway.

I might appreciate the third movie more now if I actually try to watch it, but I remember even disliking the turtle costumes in this one as well.

The writers did give a brief summary of where they would have gone with the plot if it hadn't been canceled. They had a lot of lore planned out. Sad this show didn't make it. I doubt it will get the Deadwood movie closure treatment either.

They had some absolutely crazy shit planned from what I read. The whole WW2 idea mixed with avatars is absolutely nuts.

I was in the mood for some bow action, so I decided to watch the first Hunger Games movie, not expecting much from it. The archery bits were somewhat enjoyable, and the same goes for the movie overall, but I didn't care for the production design at all. I get that coming up with a completely fictional style of fashion, and general look of a society isn't that easy, but I think they blew it. Might just be my personal taste, but something like the Fifth Element pulls of extravagant fashion way better. The fascist imagery is used pretty lazily too. In fairness though this is probably a movie for tween girls so I shouldn't expect too much. Still, I can't get over how strikingly dumb it is to have these small towns (District 12 had 10k people?) be the industrial backbone of a futuristic mega city that seems to hold 90% of the population. Just the spectator stands for the chariot parade thing probably seat more people than everyone in the peasant districts. Also, the poverty = early 20th century villages thing is dumb.

The main character, Katniss, isn't particularly likeable so it's fitting that she's played by Jennifer Lawrence. It's kinda convenient how all the nice people get taken out by others so that she never has to do anything bad, but I know that this is based on YA fiction. The titular hunger games don't feel that brutal though, it's a cool premise that ends up being a bit wasted and it never feels like a survival situation. Something like Rambo: First Blood is way more intense even though it features a more capable protagonist. In this movie, Katniss just sleeps in a tree for a day, then another tree, and then she's passed out for two days without anyone finding her. It's okay overall I'd say. The worst part is the stupid love triangle they introduce, with pointless character number one: Gale. This dude looks like what I imagine the people in Twilight look like, and has no purpose other than being jealous.

In for a penny, in for a pound, I decided to watch the other ones as well. Hunger Games: Catching Fire is already noticeably worse, even though it does also have some decent archery scenes. The actual games in this movie are extra dumb, first of all because it feels even less like a situation where they have to fight against other people (they just randomly show up at times and die). Secondly, the actual dangers they encounter amount to boring c-tier CGI wankery. Oh no, deadly mist let's run! Killer baboons! It's so dull to watch. It also doesn't make much sense, because apparently the whole thing was planned so that Katniss could make it out of there (that one lady cut out her tracker too), but why didn't any of the people who were in on it then have pre-knowledge of the design of the place? What was the plan before she randomly shot the ceiling? How did the hovercrafts get in and out to pick up the bodies when they were under a solid dome and not just a forcefield? The tech never made sense to me anyway, like if things were holograms, or real and if so how it's supposed to work.

The descent into shit continues with Mockingjay Part 1, which I think only contained a single loosed arrow. A pretty nice shot to be fair, but still. The movie is completely pointless, with Katniss doing literally nothing and her even more pointless boyfriend-not-boyfriend Gale somehow being given an important role in the rebellion army, while managing to be even more unlikeable than Jennifer Lawrence. Also he gets a crossbow at some point, because arrows and bolts, but it's dumb because a crossbow is more like a rifle than a bow. Fuck him. Despite being the third movie there are still no characters with any character, and they put Amos in it only to not give him any screen time. At the beginning of the movie people boo when president lady says she'll pardon the hunger games victors, and then at the end of the movie they applaud her when she announces that her secret mission to save them succeeded. Good job (y)

The final movie, Mockingjay Part 2, is unsurprisingly even worse. Now, it does have more archery, and the final (bow) shot is kinda nice for being as predictable as it is. Just about the only good thing I could say about the movie is that they put Michelle Forbes in it, who has the most badass voice of any female actor I can think of. Also they shot a scene in the Tokyo flood reservoirs which is kinda cool. The movie makes jealous guy even more unlikeable, by having him cry about the quality of kisses and then going on about how murdering people is all fine and good. A lot of the movie takes place in the capitol, which for whatever reason is a giant deathtrap arena, which makes about this ----> . much sense. It's ass-tier Hollywood action, and they put in a team of redshirts so we can watch them die in uninteresting ways. I'm not against the idea of a trap gauntlet, but it's terribly executed here because 1) it doesn't make any fucking sense (if they could engineer the whole city to be a trap they could also just kill everyone) 2) the traps don't make any sense, for example if you can put in the biggest fucking flame throwers I've ever seen, then I'm pretty sure you wouldn't make it so they're motion triggered by an arrow and then run out of napalm after firing once lol 3) watching them navigate the traps is utterly devoid of tension.

At some point jealous guy gets captured, and then when they reunite it's like they had some silent falling out, because she thought he was behind bombing the kids? But that doesn't make any sense, he could just as well have killed himself there. Good riddance anyway, what a useless character lol. The whole rebellion plot is impossible to care about because, again, there are hardly any characters with any kind of character, or character development in the movies. Almost the entire story is shown from a single perspective (Katniss') but she hates everyone and doesn't really want to be there. She only had some chemistry with Peeta, who might as well not be in the two last movies. At the end when they get a letter that's meant to give some resolution, it's from a character we've basically never seen, who's only relevance is that she's married to adonis-with-the-trident-guy (that's the extent of his character). I know it's a worn out point, but a movie like A New Hope is also a rebellion story and it works because it introduces and revolves around characters we care about. It's always baffling to me how much money gets put into making these movies, and how good they are technically, while still managing to be so shit in other fundamental, important ways.

I should watch some good movies next, right now I feel guilty like a just ate a ton of junk food and all I got for it was nausea.

edit: oh and also, when they have the round table vote for the next hunger games with "all" the victors, are we supposed to believe that they were the only surviving ones? Really?

I saw Hunger Games Mocking Jay 2 recently for the first time. The movie was just eh, but Jennifer Lawrence is special on screen. I think she can do any role in any movie and she's really pretty, but she's not "too pretty" to where you can't buy her being in more physically demanding roles. She's gonna go down as one of the GOATs as long as she keeps acting.

Lion King Live Action

5/10.
The first half is awful, the music is clear amateur hour, I don’t understand how anyone can fuck up Circle of Life so badly but hats off too them they really screwed the pooch on that. I just want to be king is also poorly sung and they drowned out the instruments and Be Prepared well that never stood a chance. Everything does get better once Timon and Pumba arrive though, they saved the movie from being complete trash and they were the only decent singers of the bunch.

Good Boys

8/10 maybe even a 9/10.
Been a long time since I’ve laughed so much in a new movie. Totally recommend that one. Funny, good story and it has heart. Definitely worth a watch.

It's an old HBO Movie about AIDS back in the 90s called "And the Band Played On" I watched this when I was a freshman back in HS over 20 years ago, but it's still a really good docudrama about the AIDS epidemic back in the late 70s thru the 80s.

Only watched the first season of this years ago and it was excellent.
Really should rewatch the first season and watch the second. What does it cost to stream HBO these days? Or is it still a cable only thing?

Just watched The Matrix up until about the part where Neo was told byThe Oracle that he wasn’t The One

I’ve seen it several times. It’s the most profound movie I think I’ll ever see. It speaks on so many levels. The complexity at play in this film is masterful, well ahead of its time. One for the ages this film

It’s unbelievably bleak, the reality they discover, the truth. You would think that alone would make it tough to watch more than once since the struggle in that reality is so grim and tbh from the looks of it, nearly hopeless. But everything in that film is just beyond words. I would love to take the time to study this film one day when / if I’m a lot older and have learned much and discovered much more. The Matrix man...it’s a very moving film to me. I would say it’s a priceless experience

The kids have watched Trolls 2 about a million times the last week, if im in the room i will always stop to watch this scene and laugh.

The baby with a black dudes voice is hilarious to me

Thunderball (1965) - Sean Connery's favorite of his own James Bond films, and i might have to agree. this is basically a beach movie, filmed in the Bahamas, full of bikini babes. just look at this gangsta movie poster. Bond is creeping around these gorgeous Carribean mansions and secret compounds (with swimming pools filled with killer sharks (sans laser beams)). some cool fights, very cool underwater stunts and babes galore, ofc.

You Only Live Twice (1967) - I really love this one, it takes place in Japan, it opens with a rad Bond death fakeout. the theme song is by Nancy Sinatra and absolutely rules and that string motif is a huge part of the movie's charm. there's a segment where Bond puts on makeup and "becomes a Japanese man" which they would never do nowadays. screenplay by Roald Dahl. the famous SPECTRE volcano lair is the inspiration behind the Simpson's Scorpio and Austin Powers. the bad guy pets a white cat, later parodied in Inspector Gadget). James Bond has backup from an army of ninjas, the climax of the the movie is a gloriously chaotic classic action film stunt spectacular. Bond ends the film making out with a Japanese babe in a raft in the middle of an ocean and a submarine lifts them up as a final joke.

Diamonds Are Forever (1971) - The final Connery Bond. I watched all three of these in a Saturday evening binge lol. this one was kind of a step down tbh. Bond is getting into a lot less fights and bedding a lot less women. in fact he gets beaten up by many women in this movie, probably in an attempt to keep it current. Jill St. John's Tiffany Case is an odd halfway between competent femme fatale and oblivious valley girl. a bunch of the movie is in Las Vegas, and it just feels like 70s Las Vegas. the two creepy gay main henchmen are i guess "problematic", they also look like no name losers, like some villains from an episode of the Wonder Woman tv show (2nd season) who would be robbing a disco or something. overall tone is a bit goofier and not as impressive. the finale takes place on a tiny oil platform and is not all that great tbh, i have seen an episode of Secret Agent Man that took place on a similar location and was done better. honestly it's not bad but the earlier films are far better. after this Roger Moore took over and it became self parody.

I've been slowly marathoning the Bond movies lately, because I hadn't seen or couldn't remember a lot of the old ones. I know the Moore films aren't great but some of the stunts are just incredible like the cliff jump in The Spy Who Loved Me, or the dudes crawling around on the plane in Octopussy. Nobody does that shit anymore (except for Tom Cruise).

Also the locations are great, no green screen bullshit - you want a scene in India you take your ass to India!

watched Den of Thieves last night. Pretty good.

Also Doolittle was pretty fun. I heard bad things about it but I liked it.

Butler's scene with the speech about "No, we're the bad guys" is too good. Solid movie for the most part.

Misses has been hounding me to watch the Chernobyl series with her and it makes me fucking angry at the oppressive ignorance in power throughout. Funny how Covid reflects that shit to a tee. Not quite a movie I though.

As for movies I watched recently I'd put Bad Boys for life down but it was not good, strike that one from the list ladies and gents. The Gentlemen was good for the first half, then I found myself not wanting to watch the second half. I'd rate that as so so and not a return to greatness from Guy Richie.

just read this spooky bit of trivia on "You Only Live Twice". apparently the entire Bond production team narrowly escaped dying themselves. they would have all died in a plane accident had it not been for a last minute ninja demonstration.

While scouting locations in Japan, the chief production team narrowly escaped death. On March 5, 1966, Producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, director Lewis Gilbert, cinematographer Freddie Young, and production designer Ken Adam were booked to leave Japan on BOAC flight 911 departing Tokyo for Hong Kong and London. Two hours before their Boeing 707 flight departed, the team was invited to an unexpected ninja demonstration, and so missed their plane. Their flight took off as scheduled, and twenty-five minutes after take-off, the plane disintegrated over Mt. Fuji, killing all aboard.
I've been slowly marathoning the Bond movies lately, because I hadn't seen or couldn't remember a lot of the old ones. Roger Moore is definitely full on Goofy Bond but he's still fun. imo the first 5 are unimpeachably great, after that's it's a slow downhill trend.

fwiw there is still some green screen in these movies, but also some giant insanely expensive sets. the volcano lair especially:
The volcano set cost almost as much as Dr. No (1962)'s entire budget. It was so large, it could be seen from three miles away.
Ken Adam's volcano set was constructed at Pinewood Studios and consisted of a movable helicopter platform, a working monorail system, a launch pad, and a full scale rocket mock-up that could simulate lift-off. Seven hundred metric tons of structural steel and two hundred miles of tubular steel were used. Adam once said that the set used more steel than that used for the London Hilton Hotel. The set also used two hundred metric tons of plaster, five hundred thousand tubular couplings, eight thousand railway ties for the monorail, and over two hundred fifty thousand square yards of canvas to protect the set from the weather, were all employed in the construction of the set, which cost just over one million dollars.

Watched Sublime and The Platform recently. Enjoyed both movies a lot. Platform is simply amazing and very well made movie.
Also saw Passengers last night. I greatly enjoyed it even though i did not like the ending.

Just watched the Tom Hardy Capone film.

I loved it, but it's an acquired taste lol. Its batshit insane with an over the top performance from Hardy.

It's like a haunted house film starring Al Capone who happens to be insane

Re-watched 3 great films this past week, and all 3 are extremely underrated films.

1st is Psycho 2. Great follow up to the classic original and easily stands as one of the best horror sequels ever made.

2nd was Warlock. A fantastic and really underappreciated film. Love the 2 male leads as witch and witch hunter. A really good film that has a fantastic Jerry Goldsmith score.

3rd is Exorcist 3. Has to be mentioned alongside the great horror films of all time. Also has one of the greatest scares ever filmed. A truly great film.

Watched Lost Highway last night, one of my favourite flicks. Every time I watch it I'm like, AHA, I finally get it! Then at the end I'm like, wait.....

This scene always makes me laugh, on the bluray you can literally see the edges of the masking used for the effect, and the face is hilariously too small

The whole movie just grips me, and the music is fantastic. Also has one of my favourite movie exchanges ever:

One of the things that makes this one hard for me to watch is just how much Connery doesn't give a shit all throughout it. Really kills a lot of the potential fun when you can tell the leading man doesn't want to be there. That fight in the elevator was pretty good for the era though.

Yeah that scene is a classic and I always used it to trick friends into watching the movie. Sadly they usually get bored before the end...

And other than the silly cutout face scene, I feel like the use of Marilyn Manson music aged really poorly. It was 97 so I get why it was a good idea at the time but now...eh. =P

I'm also a big fan of this scene. Amusing in it's own right but I also have a big problem with tailgaters so it's also fairly cathartic. Plus Robert Loggia going over the top is always fun.

I just posted that in the music thread, it fucking rocks and just fits the scene really well
