BEIJING (BLOOMBERG) - Chinese doctors are seeing the coronavirus manifest differently among patients in its new cluster of cases in the north-east region compared to the original outbreak in Wuhan, suggesting that the pathogen may be changing in unknown ways and complicating efforts to stamp it out.

Patients found in the northern provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang appear to carry the virus for a longer period of time and take longer to recover, as defined by a negative nucleic acid test, Dr Qiu Haibo, one of China's top critical care doctors, told state television on Tuesday (May 19).

Cases in the north-east also appear to be taking longer than the one to two weeks observed in Wuhan to develop symptoms after infection, and this delayed onset is making it harder for authorities to catch cases before they spread, said Dr Qiu, who is now in the northern region treating patients.

"The longer period during which infected patients show no symptoms has created clusters of family infections," said Dr Qiu, who was earlier sent to Wuhan to help in the original outbreak.

Some 46 cases have been reported over the past two weeks spread across three cities - Shulan, Jilin city and Shengyang - in two provinces, a resurgence of infection that sparked renewed lockdown measures over a region of 100 million people.

Scientists still do not fully understand if the virus is changing in significant ways and the differences Chinese doctors are seeing could be due to the fact that they're able to observe patients more thoroughly and from an earlier stage than in Wuhan.

When the outbreak first exploded in the central Chinese city, the local healthcare system was so overwhelmed that only the most serious cases were being treated. The north-east cluster is also far smaller than Hubei's outbreak, which ultimately sickened over 68,000 people.

Still, the findings suggest that the remaining uncertainty over how the virus manifests will hinder governments' efforts to curb its spread and re-open their battered economies. China has one of the most comprehensive virus detection and testing regimes globally, and yet is still struggling to contain its new cluster.

Researchers worldwide are trying to ascertain if the virus is mutating in a significant way to become more contagious as it races through the human population, but early research suggesting this possibility has been criticised for being overblown.

NORTH-EAST DIFFERENCES

Dr Qiu said that doctors have also noticed patients in the north-east cluster seem to have damage mostly in their lungs, whereas patients in Wuhan suffered multi-organ damage across the heart, kidney and gut.

Officials now believe that the new cluster stemmed from contact with infected arrivals from Russia, which has one of the worst outbreaks in Europe. Genetic sequencing has showed a match between the north-east cases and Russian-linked ones, said Dr Qiu.

Among the north-east cluster, only 10 per cent have turned critical and 26 are hospitalised.

China is moving aggressively to stem the spread of the new cluster ahead of its annual political gathering in Beijing scheduled to start this week. As thousands of delegates stream into the capital to endorse the government's agenda, China's central leadership is determined to project stability and control.

The north-east provinces have ordered a return of lockdown measures, halting train services, closing schools and sealing off residential compounds, dismaying residents who had thought the worst was over.

"People should not assume the peak has passed or let down their guard," Dr Wu Anhua, a senior infectious disease doctor, said on state television on Tuesday. "It's totally possible that the epidemic will last for a long time."

at least China is back to taking draconian lockdown measures! :messenger_bicep:

Shows how much CCP is hurting since they are not pretending that they dont have an outbreak anymore. Maybe next they will tell us the actual case numbers.

Germans turning to Beijing for friendship as relations with US cool

Until four years ago opinion polls tended to show that Germans looked to the US as their most vital partner on the world stage. Today 44 per cent believe it is France, followed by the US on 10 per cent, China on 5 per cent and Russia on 4 per cent, according to a survey by Kantar and the Pew Research Centre.

In all, 36 per cent said it was more important for Germany to have “warm relations” with China than with the US, while 37 per cent said the opposite. A year ago 24 per cent preferred China and 50 per cent the US.

To some extent this shift appears to have been driven by Covid-19. The German press has printed many adverse headlines about Mr Trump’s handling of the outbreak and an alleged attempt by the White House to seize control of a German biotechnology company working on a vaccine. There has also been plenty of criticism of China but its edge has been partially blunted by deliveries of face masks, protective suits and testing kits from Beijing, as well as a degree of admiration for its successes in containing the disease.

The poll, carried out for an annual report on German attitudes by the Körber Foundation, a Hamburg-based foreign policy group, showed that 73 per cent thought worse of the US as a result of the pandemic, while 5 per cent had been impressed. By contrast 36 per cent said their opinion of China had deteriorated but 25 per cent said it had improved. “In terms of public opinion, the People’s Republic appears to be on the cusp of filling the vacuum resulting from waning US popularity,” the foundation wrote.

This ambivalence has been reflected in German foreign policy. Angela Merkel has refrained from raising China’s human rights record in public and her government has allowed Huawei, the telecoms company closely linked to Beijing, to build elements of Germany’s new high-speed 5G mobile network, to American displeasure.

On the other hand, Berlin increasingly refers to China as an economic rival and has signalled that it is prepared to block attempts by Chinese companies to take over strategically important German businesses.

Some politicians warn that Germany will ultimately be forced to choose between the superpowers. However, Dagmar Schmidt, a member of the Bundestag’s foreign affairs committee, argued that Germany and the EU should try instead to build an independent multilateral alliance with countries such as India, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

“Europe is not squeezed between the US and China, but has partners to promote a better and fairer international environment,” Ms Schmidt wrote in the report.

1. The most important partner of Germany is France
2. Assuming the current process of ending international cooperation from the US is not being continued under a new president, the US will be a more important partner for Germany than China. If the US continues on Trump's current course, China may become more valuable, simply because they are willing to cooperate, as opposed to that hypothetical future US.
3. To be a more important partner does not imply ideological closeness or agreement with the political situation in the country.

I almost forgot: My opinion of China is largely unchanged over the last ten years (mildly negative), my opinion of the US has decreased by two factors: Electing a far-right populist president (and his subsequent policies) and the Democrats proving to be corrupt and opportunistic. My opinion of the US changed from "neutral to negative" under GW Bush to "positive" under Obama to "neutral" under Trump.

In other news - time to ramp up that debt UK gov!
It's like God sent a huge FU to Britain. Finally Brexit happens and then Corona follows on the spot. And the UK can try to cope with all the outcome on its own, on top of already having had a weak economy and no plan for the post-EU world. Johnson got what he deserved, he won't be PM for long.

You know that if the yield on a government bond is negative that means people are paying to lend to our government. That kinda suggests they think it's the safest place for their money. I think you've misinterpreted things in your desperate seething hatred of Boris. You might want to try wiping Keir's cum from your eyes and try reading the graph again.

I would suggest if your opinion of China hasn’t changed through the current calamity, you are not paying attention. “Mildly negative” is pretty generous for a country that at best caused all this by gross negligence. Not to mention the blatant censorship, concentration camps, disappearing of dissidents, etc. Then again historically Germany has been pretty receptive to a few of those ideas, so who knows.

Damn.. haven't heard yet. Wonder if HB will have their parade. Hopefully we're allowed to do them at our houses. I hope Phantom and TNT fireworks stands are still allowed to open for selling them.

You haven't had to deal with dumb mask policies? Lucky you. I'm currently forced to wear a mask at work while:

1. Operating a CNC machine while nobody is nearby
2. Calling customers from my desk with nobody nearby, cuz, ya know...don't wanna get our customers sick by breathing thru the phone, amirite?

Shit isn't doing anything besides annoying me.

Much logic, many safe. :messenger_grinning_squinting:

Right, but you have to understand people making the guidelines have to look out for the dumbest among us, in order to protect you and your loved ones. Obviously wearing a mask when you are alone operating machinery does not help anyone, but not everyone can think critically.

I do kinda agree here.

Why were 90% of patients in NY who go on vents die. This is way above other countries where it was closer to 50%. What was going on with the standard of care there.

You also have this pretty big aversion to trying experimental drugs as an example HCQ. Medicine is very politicized in the US. Probably another reason why there isn't a lot of talk about Vitamin D since we know who is deficient in Vitamin D and we can't really talk about that.

You also have this weird thing where planned parenthood and abortion shops are staying open, but regular surgeries or cancer screenings are closing down.

And though not exclusive to the USA since this is in Canada and Europe as well, but there were idiot governors and health officials who literally gave orders to send infected people into senior homes, which of course resulted in the virus running rampant and killing 1000's of people.

1. Fair enough.
2. The US is hardly unco-operative, they still trade, and still work with France through the UN and NATO. Further, any Chinese co-operation should be couched with the consideration that their Belt And Road program demonstrates a desire to entrap countries with debt and steal their assets, and to gain considerable control over governments throughout the world.
3. It should. Choosing to be a partner with China means choosing to be ok with the organ harvesting, the treatment of muslims, the authoritarianism. Whatever beef you have with the US is nothing compared to what China does to its people.

As for your opinion on China - you must be asleep if you think that they are only mildly negative. As a German, you should be able to spot true fascism when you see it, and should desire not to assist the rise of the 4th reich. Also, far-right? Trump? You're shitting me right? Nothing Trump does is significantly to the right of Bill Clinton.

The bolded was known before, if the accusations that COVID-19 entered society through an error in a lab are true, then that's certainly negative, but a very minor thing in comparison to the dictatorship issues, so it does not change my opinion of China much. Maybe you just paid insufficient attention towards China's breaches of human rights in the past?

There are countries like Iran, Suadi Arabia and so on, which are on the tier below China in my view.

Maybe it should, but not cooperating with countries who breach human rights is basically impossible considering how our society is structured.

For what it's worth, I think COVID19 has benefitted the UK in it's Brexit negotiations. No one on either side of the table can negotiate on the strength of their economy, since everyone's economy is down the shitter at the moment.

The impending economic downturn as a result of this pandemic will force both parties to work on a more realistic arrangement - and I think the prospect of a no deal Brexit is not as daunting as it was at the start of the year.

Locals not allowed lol

For those who don't know, Devon is like the Florida of the UK, or something. Basically it has the best beaches in the UK.

Threatened by the police lol wtf

Edit: Looks like UK gonna be pissed at this.

No I was well aware of China’s atrocities. That’s why I wouldn’t describe my opinion of the Chinese government as “mildly negative”. My opinion of Canada’s government right now is mildly negative. My opinion of Angela Merkel’s crew is mildly negative. China falls somewhere way further down the scale of negativity.

And Cuomo wanted 40K of them.

40K*.9 = 36 000 deaths.

That was what Cuomo was going into hysterics about with his 40K vents. If he got his wish 36 000 dead.

a lot of these vents are just straight death murder, you have no business being on one unless you're out of options
This is true. Especially when they are managed by people that aren’t comfortable with these patients. A lot of the management of Covid patients on ventilators run counter to what we normally do. I think a lot of the deaths in New York were due to inexperienced nurse, doctors, and respiratory staff being forced to take care of ICU level patients when the hospitals began to fill up.

Yeah but he did what everybody was doing at the time: panicking because we had an epidemic of what was understood at the time to be a respiratory illness where people could not get oxygen.

Its easy to follow the logic but now we should be realizing that ventilators are not something that is going to solve many problems

Precisely what would they have to do to be on the worst tier? Is it not enough that they have concentration camps for Muslims, enslave Africa, destroy democracy in Homg Kong, keep Taiwan off the WHO, engage in systematic corruption at all levels, own the UN, deny their people basic freedoms and censor everything, ‘persuade Western filmmakers to kowtow to them, hack into any god damn server you put on the internet, engage in slavery to get us our cheap phones but destroying jobs in the west, etc. Is that not enough?

I was wondering where the heck all this gridlock traffic appeared from today. I later found out that McDonald's opened up 6 of their drive-thru restaurants in my city.
