My friend who is a Nintendo fanboy is very proud that Nintendo games do not drop in price & often shits on AAA games saying how fast their price drops

If I remember correctly, a massive part of why Nintendo games hold their value is down to Nintendo being the only publisher that won't buy back unsold copies, and generally never giving retailers deals or discounts, regardless of how long a title has been out.

Hence why third party exclusives on Nintendo platforms get price reductions as normal, and first praty games will eventually go on clearance at ridiculously cheap prices, either when a game just won't sell or the store needs to clear inventory space.

It clearly works for them, since they've cultivated a stastus quo where their fans expect to pay high prices, but it's nothing to do with quality, just a business decision to sacrifice some sales in a trade off for brand quality perception.

It's the same thing Apple does basically.
Which publishers buy back unsold stock?

Is the OP saying that her friend is proud of dropping $60/40 on Sushi Striker, Codename STEAM, Mario & Luigi and Ever Oasis despite those games dropping in price because no one bought them? And (re)bought Wii U games Remasters at full price because Nintendo decided the fanbase would buy them again on a newer console?

What a sad, strange little man, and he has my pity.

He is also missing out on some great games elsewhere for thinking thay way, because games are sometimes worth more than a stupid price tag. Games fluctuate in price when cult classics emerge from the market.

In 10 years down the line he may realise there was an amazing game on a Playstation or Xbox but gee....the Price actually went up far more than he realised and not he can't buy it...guess he better sell those Nintendo games he paid full price for at either the same amount or slightly lower to make up for it.

Yes Nintendo's games hold their value, but because Nintendo sell that many of their games they will never become "rare" per se. The guy seems ill informed on how a games worth is dependant on the person. Not everyone likes Nintendo games.

Who doesn’t like to spend less money? Your friend apparently ... I think your friend thinks price drop correlates with bad games. Which is right sometimes but not all the time.

Even if they were a massive prick about it (which I'm not seeing here, to be honest), it's pretty sad to hold your "friend" up to the ridicule of strangers on the internet just because they're douchey in one area of their lives. Nobody's perfect. If it bothers you that much, stop being friends. If not, better to keep it to yourself then throw them under the bus, even anonymously.

However weird their identification with a gaming company that doesn't know they exist (and don't get me wrong, it's freaking weird), your post strikes me as even more pathetic.

your post and what hes saying read like two different things, From the post what im inferring is that if AAA games are going to drop price to $30 or lower in like two week time then the games initial asking price $60 was to much.
This is what gets me. OP obviously has a history with the person, so there are probably other, more damning exchanges out there. But just going off of what we have here, it looks like the friend is making fun of how some AAA games don't hold their value, which isn't exactly an edgy opinion. The running joke on GAF is that you wait a week after launch and get any Ubisoft game 50% off. *shrug*

We all know that a game will lose it's quality if it's bought on sale.
I remedy this by withdrawing a wad of cash from the ATM and sets it on fire. The quality of the game can be even better than at full prize depending on how much money you burn.
This way I can escape that cheap-skate feeling I normally get when buying cheap stuff.

How do we know if the OPs screenshot is legit and not actually them typing on a separate IP address?

No one in their 40s are that delusional to support a company are they?

The article I read stated it as the norm, which marries up to my personal experience with such things.

My sister was the area manager for WH Smith's in the South East of England for about 20 years, that kind of thing was pretty standard for most anything as part of their contracts with distributors.

Retailers buy up only as much stock as they expect to sell in a reasonable time frame, while publishers/distributors persuade them to buy as many copies as possible.

To make sure retailers don't end up getting the thin end of the wedge and lose money when they're persuaded to buy more than will sell, there's usually an arrangement for the unsold stock to be bought back so as to at least partially cover costs. This benefits both parties by giving a safety net to enable the purchase of more stock with less risk.

Similarly, these contracts also include provisions for the RRP of products to lower with subsequent restocks, since sales are obviously front loaded and lower prices keep sales up and profits comming in for everyone.

Again, what I read was that Nintendo do neither of these things, except under extremely rare circumstances.

The only example I can think of of them buying back products was that time the sale of WiiU's in Europe went down in a quarterly shareholder report, because something like 200,000 of them had to be sent back.

I'm not. This was him getting his kid to stream Mario Odyssey, wearing a Mario t-shirt with the labo and ringfit placed at a position so that everyone can see them. I've blanked out everything except the headset, gaming chair and the Ringfit and Labo he places around to promote them.

Talking to another friend. He bought the switch version of Wonderful 101 and posted his displeasure about the framerate of the switch version on Facebook and he got attacked by a drove of Nintendo fanboys. The one that attacked my friend most savegely is the fanboy that I've been talking about. And even this friend of mine agrees that this Nintendo Fanboy i'm talking about is Number 1 in my country.

The name blocked out in red is the name of the Nintendo Fanboy. He's not the only one who thinks the Nintendo Fanboy is number 1 in the country. There are lots of other friends who think so. He got interviewed by a news website about his love for Nintendo but I will not share the link. Even his wife acknowledges that he's the number 1 fanboy in our country.

To be fair, I don't see how you are any better with the "hey guys check out the dumb thing this one Nintendo fanboy is saying".

It's "Console War" bullshit from both sides.

He's a bit weird if he is legitimately "proud" of the fact that Nintendo games don't go on sale. (Which isn't even true? I thought they had eshop sales often?)
At the same time you are a bit weird by presenting this private conversation to us so we can say "oh yes those Nintendo fanboys are so dumb".

At least he's being open that he just doesn't like Playstation.
You on the other hand are sneaking off behind your buddies back to ridicule them to make some point about Nintendo.

So dumb.

He also pays full price for games released on the switch that have been released years ago on other platforms. Example $8 on steam but $49 on switch but he'll use being able to play portable as an excuse.

But his time played for these games are 2 hours and then he doesn't touch them anymore.

LOL.

Are you trying to be the "Consumer Habits Police" or something?

No doubt people waste their time and money on stupid pointless shit.
Can't tell you the number of times I've paid for tickets for absolutely horrifically bad movies and probably even bought shitty cinema popcorn and a drink too.

No doubt we end up defending those purchases too.
I was bored as hell and a movie seemed like a good way to relax or I wanted to keep seeing a girl I liked but had run out of date ideas.
Etc etc.

If your "friend" thinks that 50 bucks to play a game on portable is worth it then fair enough.
Goddamn in my younger days I would easily spew 50 bucks worth of booze and kebab into the gutter on a Saturday night.

Portable gaming is great. *shrugs*

Red Dead Redemption 2 still goes for ~$40 even though it sold more than 30 million.

Quality holds value. Perhaps Nintendo overvalues their own games and perhaps the AAA devs who drop prices to $20 after 12 months to make room for this year's hotness undervalue their own game, but the consumers still spend their money how they want. Quality holds value.

Nintendo's philosophy is to make a high-quality entry in their anticipated franchises and for it to (hopefully) sell for many more years. When a new Nintendo customer buys the system, they have their pick of THE Mario game and THE Zelda game and so forth. The typical industry AAA philosophy is to make entries in their yearly franchises to generate x revenue for y months, trying to timing it perfectly as production for next year's entry starts to wind down and they sell you on that on (and all the DLC hooks) all over again. Nintendo seems oblivious (or willfully resistant) to this philosophy.

Nintendo don't drop their prices because they don't need to, and the 2nd hand market doesn't even drop prices much either. In part it's because their games are few in number but high in quality and usually offer something different to what's found elsewhere, there's a certain Nintendo magic. I would also note that they don't seem to be that big on microtransactions and nickel-and-diming, to perhaps there's an element of shifting the cost from that to the retail price, which I think is something we can all get behind (even if you get the game cheap because other people are paying for microtransactions, the microtransactions impact upon the design process of the game as developers are told to maximise monetisation).

Also, however weird the friend is, the OP seems a douche.

Well, to be fair I think other AAA companies would do exactly the same if their games continue to sold as much as Nintendo exclusive do in long time. For example, I'm pretty sure GTA V has been pretty expensive for years.

I don't think I'm being a police in any way. I'm not the only one talking about this friend of mine.

Everyone in the gaming industry knows him and laughs at him behind his back. Calling him "Celestial Of Nintendo" and many other names.

He phones up game shops to ask how much the switch sold, he phones people up to ask if they have bought a switch or the latest Nintendo game. He checks on people's playtime on the switch and will question you if you didn't log in for days. He had a massive hard on whenever he sees pictures of people queuing up for switch or telling people the price of Ring Fit went up and how switch is sold out everywhere in the world. (He visits Resetera's MediaCreate thread). He asks people to buy multiple Switches even though they say they already have one because in his own words "It is Nintendo's Vision for everyone in a family to own a switch". So if you have 5 people in your family, he'll want you to get 5 Nintendo Switches. Because he said that is Nintendo's Vision.

It's just not healthy.

Now I don't know the reason why I started this thread. Was it to laugh at my friend? Was it to warn everyone here about the dangers and stupidity of being a fanboy? Was it to find some way to help my friend because he really is the laughing stock behind many peoples' back? I don't know. Maybe all of them.

To each his own. He’s missing out on a lot of good games. If I had bought an XboxOne and PS4 I’d be playing a handful of excellent games and I’m a hardcore Nintendo fan as well

Let him think what he thinks, kind of a silly perspective but whatever. This is the kind of shit teens usually argue about lol

Real value within games is judged by what you get out of it, not what you pay for it. AAA games do drop in price, but they often sell tons of copies and the publishers like to keep the momentum up. Nintendo artificially create scarcity and always keep their titles near full price, as that has always been their business model and it seems to work for them.

Your friend is welcome to his opinion, but it seems rather naive to me. Short of being a bit of a "fanboy", i'm not sure why anyone would take pride or experience enjoyment out of paying more for their games. I haven't bought a Nintendo console during it's active period for quite a while now, probably since the N64. Due to the cost of entry for questionable hardware, cost of the software and the level of enjoyment I actually get out of the exclusive titles.

I'm not paying £40-50 for a mario title i don't really enjoy, or another Zelda title that fails to appeal to me like LTTP did all those years ago...all while running like dogshit on their hardware. Opinions and all that.

Well, he is not wrong to despise some full-price AAA games that drop in price too quickly.
I only buy the most essential games day one. The rest i buy when they are 50%+ reduced.

Sounds like mental illness, maybe?

You think this kind of behavior is typical of "fanboys"?

Seems like the dude has issues that are not really as simple as "the dangers and stupidity of being a fanboy".

I think this is one of those cases where being a rabid "anti-fanboy" can be just as bad as being a rabid "fanboy".

I mean, for all the crazy stuff this dude gets up to, you are still on here badmouthing him behind his back while claiming to be a friend. All in the name of showing how stupid and dangerous fanboys can be.

Very strange thread.

It sounds like your friend is trying to make himself feel special, like he is some part of an exclusive elitists club. He can then justify his love by paying Nintendo twice for the same game lol. Also I think part of it is that he may be happy he doesn't have choices to make. He doesn't have to deal with 3 consoles or pc and all those games, only Nintendo makes good games so he doen't even have to consider anything else, doing so might make his brain hurt. Meanwhile Nintendo could give two craps about his loyalty. It just seems like a giant ploy to hide insecurity.

Wait a minute. He is known in the gaming industry and there have been articles written about him? So he is a public figure? Let's see some of these articles?

Assuming this is true, it sounds like your "friend" has a serious mental illness problem.

The article I read stated it as the norm, which marries up to my personal experience with such things.

My sister was the area manager for WH Smith's in the South East of England for about 20 years, that kind of thing was pretty standard for most anything as part of their contracts with distributors.

Interesting indormation you have there.

Do you think that Nintendo had to take back the Wii U Stock as Retailers would have threatened them with a refusal of taking on future games/hardware from the company?

I am learning accointing and it mentions that you try and sell products at Cost Value (more than what you bought it for, plus the standard policies of making the product) within a time perood, but then after that you have to sell it at the Net Realisable Value (what you got the stock at) to get it off shelves. They make profit elsewhere when this happens as Shelf Space is king in most businesses.

I would love to know how Nintendo are the exception to the norm and at least don't piss off the UK Retail Businesses as we, the customers are tight bastards looking for deals.

OP, your friend clearly isn't healthy and I wonder how he survived the Gamecube/Wii U days when Nintendo were not so hot. Did he push 3DSes at launch instead and stopped once they dropped the price?
