I'm thinking about buying Idiocracy, I don't even think it's all that great of a movie but man some of the lines crack me up so much
I dunno why but I just love that they use fuckin' Gatorade (basically) on crops. I dunno why that shit is so funny to me.

Ultimately, I had a blast. While Bright started out rough by beating you over the head with its political leanings, insistence on tacky hip hop for the OST, and bizarre choice to lay the profanity on thick; Bright is a movie with a fairly unique concept which it ultimately handled and introduced me to about as well as it could. A gritty buddy cop flick with strong high fantasy influences and just the right amount of the Fifth Element thrown in for good measure. Reminded me of the Underworld movies for some reason. I dig those. 8/10

Watched The Lovebirds on Netflix starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Ray. I didn’t really enjoy it. The plot was uninteresting and their jokes were corny. The only thing enjoyable was the chemistry between them. I’d recommend to skip this one.

Me and the wife hadn't seen it since the theater, liked it then and still liked it last night. It has a lot more weight now however that we have twin girls. I think this was the movie that turned me onto Denis Villeneuve, and while I haven't seen all of his movies I have seen everything he has done since Incendies (except for some shorts). Fantastic film maker, he got some great performances out of everyone in this movie.
Also if anyone hasn't seen Incendies, that is another great movie, some tough subject matter what like most of his movies, great performances and some great visuals.

Enemy was the same year can't remember if it was before or after prisoners. We ended up watching Enemy just a few weeks after we saw Prisoners in theaters, also a good movie. The end was trippy and that is the movie that started me down the path of YouTube movie analysis videos which I watch all the time now.

Very stylish and well made. Characters and deaths all felt very real. Ending speech was corny, and not nearly as clever as the writer/director seems to think it was. Weird political messaging throughout the film felt forced and out of place. Still a damn fine movie overall. 8/10

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. The political stuff felt super weird. Even the tagline is, "IN AMERICA YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN." Then there's all the stuff about the 2008 campaign. I don't know, just seemed really weird and out of place. It's unfortunate, because otherwise this is a gritty, simple crime flick. My favorite thing was just how real all the violence felt.

Goddamn, they just dont make 'em like this anymore. Really neat seeing a young James Caan as 'Mississippi'. Great writing with a fantastic cast. Some glorious cinematography on display here also. Solid pacing along with great shootouts. I think I enjoy El Dorado even more than Rio Bravo.10/10

Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie - Animelab
I mentioned in the Netflix GITS show thread that I watched the older series called Arise which I loved and I was really surprised by it's closing movie. It might even be better than the original GItS film (in terms of story) but that's because it follows on from the Arise series. If it was presented as it is without a series prior it would have just been ok. Animation wise it's not as good as the original film as it sticks to the same style as the Arise show. For those that don't know, it actually leads into the original GITS film so it really is a prequel.
Love how all the characters are presented and treated, Major, Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa, Paz and Saito are all here.
Very interesting story that involves the Major being framed and the continued usage of the memory virus from the series.
Promare - Animelab
From the crazy creators of Gurren Lagaan and Kill La Kill comes this cray over the top anime about a fire fighter that gets involved with a increasingly chaotic premise. I don't really want to say much but if you loved that 2 other anime that I mentioned you should hopefully love this. It's ... insane.
The Mummy - Blu Ray
So the wifey wanted to rewatch the Mummy movies and so we have started to do just that. The first film is still a lot of fun with Brendan Fraiser and Rachel Weisz but it's not the best movie ever made either. The CG has definitely not aged very well as a vast majority of it looks like absolute shit. Based on the blu ray the film really needs a 4K remaster, reading reviews about the 4K blu ray the video quality is better but I don't think there is 100% confirmation that the film is an upscale or remaster. Either way, I don't think the film is worth double dipping. It's just a fun film, nothing special.
The Mummy Returns - Blu Ray
This is even worse than the first film and the CG is even worse because the rely on it so much more. In retrospect, I don't think the Tom Cruise Mummy film is bad as people make it seem, it's on the same level as the Brendan Fraiser Mummy films for me. The kid actor and the actress for Anck-Su-Namun are both atrocious and I have no idea who casted them. On the plus side, there is a hell of a lot of Rachel Weisz cleavage.
Joker - Blu Ray
Watched this at my sisters house and it's still enjoyable on the small screen. Unfortunately she doesn't own any surround sound so it was just bog standard TV speakers and it sure as hell doesn't have the same impact as what IMAX had. Great acting and beautiful crisp visuals.

Now this was an enjoyable film. I don't care about the backlash it got at release but this is far better than the 2nd film and may better than the first film. Storywise it's a bit of a rehash with the emperor having a love triangle, he has a curse put on him and he wants to take over the world when he awakes but it's just so damn fun. It is a shame that Rachel Weisz gets replaced but Mario Bello might be an even better fit for the character, she does seem to do better at the action scenes for example. And thank christ the film has some decent CG, it's not the greatest but it's a vast improvement over the previous 2 films.

I saw Fat Bad Boys for Life and I thought yeah, Martin Lawrence was looking a little plump. Then I took a look at the OG versions...
Then I thought the current version of Martin Lawrence must have gotten bit by a rattlesnake in his neck or he's a stunt double for Cedric the Entertainer. Muh fucka got fat! Movie was par with other action sequels. It was so long at some point, I felt like I was watching the "extended version including deleted scenes".

Old favorite of mine. I usually watch it about once a year and that time was this weekend. It’s a little dated, it was filmed pre 9/11 so the whole geopolitical situation is way off but it’s a damn good movie. Kevin Pollack delivers a really powerful performance.

I used to love the Mummy films but the first 2 are just ok now. They feel under budgeted in hindsight or maybe the technology wasn't there yet. Every time you see the Mummy in all his GC glory it took me out of the film.
As I mentioned, the 2 terrible actors in Mummy Returns. Rick also feels like he has zero relationship with his son in the sequel. I know they partnered the son with Jonathan for comedic reasons but Rick's care for his son doesn't feel genuine. Unless he is running to save his son there is nothing there between them. No idea if ultimately that was an oversight for the 2nd film but I like how the 3rd film picked up on that story beat.
Action scenes are mostly undercooked and relay far too much on editing and changing camera angles. The bus chase in London is probably the best action scene out of the first 2 films.
The third film is just bigger, grander, they had the budget to do what they wanted to do, the actors as a whole are better and the chemistry between all the characters is better.

One movie I saw that I really liked, my biggest surprise of the lockdown, was Nocturnal Animals. It looks great, the acting is good, the way the stories intertwine is interesting, I think it’s just really good.

My take:
Loved the first two movies, and was super eager to see the third one back then.
Was super disappointed, movie felt like a tacked on sequel through and through, Maria Bello was a completely different character compared to what Rachel Weisz brought to the first two movies and Brendan Fraser started to look old and fat at that point already.
All in all the movie tried to recapture the magic of the first two instalments, but failed to do so spectacularly.
It's still a 3/5 movie for me, but the first two were at least in the 4.5 region.

The last ones I watched and genuinely liked (this is after sitting through about 250 modern Hollywood movies which I gave a B- rating) were: Summer of 84' (80's horror original...filmed in 2018 or 19), Doctor Sleep, Rambo V: Last Blood, and the Foreigner (with Jackie Chan).
