As a Sony fan I can safely say Xbox have handled the marketing for this Gen so much better thus far.

Sony are killing it. This gen has been a textbook example of how "less can be more" in terms of marketing.

Say what you want about what MS has been doing, but the reality is that PS4 is closing out the gen with way more momentum than Xbox, and they've barely started with the PS5 hype machine.

For me personally, its irrelevant. I have purchased every Playstation and dont need convincing. Couldn't care less about whether theres a presentation or not.

I know what I am going to get with a playstation. Same case with Nintendo.

I'm sure its the same case with people who have gamed on Xbox consoles.
This is exactly what the average Joe on the street thinks:

A new Xbox and Playstation is coming.

They are the majority of the market. They don't NEED to know the X,Y and Z of the consoles like us forum dwellers.

All they need is a date and price to play their Fifa and Call of Duty on.

Agree.

The majority of gamers couldn't care less.

Its the same with many hardcore gamers.

I personally purchase every Playstation and Nintendo simply because I know exactly what I'm gonna get from them.

Sony for its 1st party titles and JRPGs from third parties.

Nintendo for its great party titles like Mario, Zelda and Metroid which I never miss.

I don't need to be convinced through marketing and presentations.

Same for Xbox gamers.

Neither Sony or Microsoft has done their main marketing campaigns. The main marketing is for the people that aren't on gaming forums or sites refreshing to see new information it's to be forced on the people who play games but aren't actively The main marketing is also going to happen in the last few months. Regular people are going to forget about stuff you talk about several months before you can get it. Everything so far is just to wet the beaks of enthusiasts (and maybe non-enthusiasts will see some stuff too). Sony and Microsoft could be silent until a couple of months before launch and still get more or less the same sales. They don't need to spend months with small glimpses of information so that people can forget shit. They are going to go hard near the end. Just like the vast majority of movies, shows, and electronics.

This is not going to matter once they show their hand; they have built up an insane amount of anticipation... and if they deliver, the hype will be INSANE.

And then we wait another 4-5 months to be able to play on these things...

None of this shit really matters... Sony could have skipped the wired artitcles and the road to PS5 and really the hype would only be that much bigger.

Eh, you’ve said ’this gen’ in the title so I’m going to have to disagree 😆

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Sony is the incumbent right now.

So internally, they might be stepping on eggshells..

The smallest mistake could cost them dearly.

Killed threads? Nah you just gave your opinion, a very good, educated and well balanced opinion I may add, but it's still an opinion, as is my post, as is anyone's comments to it. We all have opinions and can all agree and disagree. That's what makes the world go round. No-one can kill anyone's opinion.

Lol. I know it's kind of a secondary joke, I have just experienced it happen a few times where I made a wall of text like that in a debate thread and then there were no more posts afterwards. Maybe I was just LTTP those times though haha!

I think I agree to an extend yes, but 2020 has been a wild year and probably a lot of stuff behind the scenes happened that needed to be changed etc.

The good news for us is that in the end it is not about the marketing when we have the consoles in our hands, but the games.

Outside of pricing it at 599.99 or 699.99 there is nothing Sony could do to lose this. I could pick 10 random posters here who could guide the PS5 to 65% market share. So no small mistake would cost them a thing.

I'm enjoying the Series X marketing, but I'd have to disagree of late. Sony haven't shown much, but what they've shown has been exactly what it needs to be. The controller is new, different, and exciting. The UE5 demo on PS5 and it's impact is still making headlines. Microsoft have shown us a good amount, and everything related to the Series X itself has been pretty much perfect. But that live reveal... a complete bungle. They dropped the ball in a big way. Their "World's First Next-gen Gameplay!" ultimately turned out to be trailers for games where virtually nothing on display seemed to be really next-gen at all. And their big headliner? A third party multi-generational multi-platform title that failed to impress... anyone. Looked like Xbox One X footage, for all intents and purposes.

Also, seriously, fuck anyone who thinks Sony's postponement due to the widespread national-level riots ravaging America was a bad idea. "They're pandering", "They want to make sure they get the headlines". Read the God-damn fucking room - over 110,000 people are dead due to a pandemic, cities are on fire, journalists are being assaulted on air in the streets across the country, the President is winding up the military to step in. I think our precious little video games can wait a fucking week.

Couldnt agree more. Sony dragged their heals. waited too long to reveal and have now backed themselves into a corner. its so fucking silly.

stop treating this like a fucking state secret. just reveal the damn games already.

Marketing is timing. Now's not the time. The push will come and you will buy a pS5. Mission accomplished.

To add Microsoft haven't sold me on their console yet either. Their push will come aswell. I hope they can get me to buy one too.

Win win for all I hope.

Something tells me OP is far too dense to even realize that.

We're still reeling from Covid19 and now we have worldwide protests. This should not even need to be pointed out
theres ALWAYS something going on. i mean China has literal concentration camps. you dont need to stop the world because a bunch of 18-22 year olds wants to destroy property just so they can “be a part of something”.

and for op to “believe in the riots” is absurd to me. you do know they are dragging people out of cars and beating them jsut because they are white? that they are vandalizing WW2 memorials and the lincoln memorial? that they are destroying private businesses and private property? people are getting murdered in the name of george floyd and its despicable. People, including Sony should be ashamed. I understand wanting justice for Floyd but you must also understand rioting is doing nothing for his memory or cause.

Meh, neither Sony or Microsoft showed anything that made me excited for next gen systems so I would say both failed in marketing in my eyes.

Xbox has to, I like how Microsoft is really showing up this next gen. Now I can see why Sony hasn’t talked much since they had a few big titles this year, FF7R(timed) TLoU2 and ghost of Tsushima, an probably didn’t want to overshadow too much. Also I think Sony has a owns a big part of the marketShare this gen they kinda laidback abit. Hopefully Sony shows something either this Friday or at least next Monday.

You're a great talker though! Raised some very good points which I in fact agree with which make me think maybe Sony's campaign hasn't been as bad as I first believed!

Sony are fucking up.

They are continuing to fuck up, their lack of clear communication, piss poor clarification over features and functions of the platform, to their lack of urgency when you realise we're so close to the console's launch and we've seen next to nothing.

Clown on Xbox for their no Exclusives and that dreadful live event, god knows I have, but they are at least trying something and have outdone Sony in every way so far with their marketing.

It could be desperation on their part to get as ahead of Sony as possible, and Sony really only need to reveal a few select Exclusives and all their mistakes will be forgotten, but we can't deny how well Xbox have handled this promotion battle so far.

From influencer media open days, to many articles clarifying the most minute of features, they've done so much to show their fanbase what they're doing and how they're doing it.

Sony we've had a few so so Wired articles, a fucking logo reveal, a controller reveal (which was only due to fears of it leaking beforehand), and a long talk that was promoted for the completely wrong crowd when Sony should have done more beforehand to clarify it was a developer centric conference.

Now we've had their rightful (albeit deceitful) postponement of the first event where it felt like Sony were starting to do the right thing.

I'm not saying Postponing it was a bad decision as I fully believe in the riots and protests and stand for getting justice for George Floyd. But Sony don't care about that one bit, they're doing that to save face in the PR department and as they know they won't get as many views during this time. It's a selfish business decision wrapped up as a humane action for the better of society.

The problem with this? A lack of communication to the fans, who are quite rightly pissed and left wondering what is next, we're having to delve into the shit storm known as 4Chan to find any news of what's next and that shouldn't be the case.

I'm sure Sony can and probably will bounce back, but they shouldn't be excused for how poorly they've handled this so far.

Who do I blame? Jim Ryan.

Let me know if you agree or disagree below. And let's try and keep it civil!
Their lack of communication is done on purpose. They ve done this before. Starving the market for news, then revealing new console and the world going crazy.
i actually like this approach a lot more than xbox’s. We ve first heard of this machine at E3 2018! 2,5 years before launch...Thats way worse than not talking about something.
I feel sony’s presentation will be worth the wait and feel like bold next step. Not like xbox’s lackluster “gameplay” reveal

Nah, they both haven't done a particularly good job so far.

If anything, I'd say the controller and that UE5 demo are the two most interesting things we've seen about next-gen, outside of specs.

Given last Xbox SeX event of the so called "gameplay" reveal, how on earth could you say Xbox handled the marketing much better?

All I read are Phil Spenser said we have teraflops this, Phil Spenser said we have framerates that. Lots of promises with very little to show.

7AFJH2j.jpg

Since when is The Ghosts of Tsushima state of play video for the PS4 considered PS5 marketing lmao.

Go look at the like/dislike ratio on the PS5 deep dive video, and then look at the like/dislike ratio on the Series X Digital foundry deep console breakdown. See? We can all cherry pick dumb comparisons that dont even matter. It's easy.

Who even cares about the marketing anyway? Arguing over which companies are marketing better is some bottom of the barrel fanboy type shit.

This isn't a "world wide protest" just because some wierdos in other countries than the US jump on the bandwagon. Have you seen those "protestors" from other countries? They're mostly left wing extremists. Are you that excited about neonazi and islamist "protestors", too?

they don’t even know how the thing looks like. Only controller and logo.
It’s hard to get excited.

What a bizarre overreaction. If the event would have happened this week, there would probably have been a lot more meaningful information out about PS5 than XB1X by the end of it. Nobody is forcing anyone to go on 4chan to do anything. There is plenty of time before launch, calm down and wait a couple of weeks.

Of course. Right now, many Sony fans are pissed, but as soon as they announce Spiderman 2 or HZD2 (and everybody knows those games will come) everything is forgotten and everybody celebrates and praises Sony again. That's the advantage of the market leader, you actually can't do anything wrong.

As someone who is more inclined to get an Xbox this gen (first time for me), I'd say Sony did nothing wrong so far, apart from that Cerny presentation which was pitiful.

They can kiss Epic's butt though for that UE5 presentation. That single thing helped them more than anything else.
