The vertical stands have a history of being extremely overpriced accessories designed to help Sony make up some the low margins on the consoles themselves, often costing $20 for what amounts to little more than some plastic and a screw.

So according to the pictures of the PS5 shown by Sony the stand seems needed whether you put it horizontally or vertically. if that's the case then surely it must be included in the box. Sony wouldn't sell you a system you couldn't place properly would they?

Although saying that I'm getting flashbacks to a crazy TV customer I had where he wanted to, and I quote: "smash the speakers/subwoofers off the back of the TV, so my neighbours don't complain about noise" and I was like *exhales* "I wouldn't recommend it mate... all the electronics and power supply is in there too"

I think so, all shots I've seen show this "black circle" under it.

I don't believe they've shown the right hand side yet, I think it will have an indentation for the stand to fit into.

Huh. I would assume it's included if you literally need it to work in either orientation. I guess maximizing airflow.

The PS4 Slim stand cost me £20 and it was just a bit of clear perspex and a screw....

All the horizontal pics show the stand and since the white shells on each side are curved I would assume the stand is needed.

Maybe something to do with airflow? Maybe the fins help with drawing in air so they can't remove them to make it have a flat base, which would take away a need for stand while horizontal.

It will be included in the package to seem free, yes, but somewhere down that delicious price, you pay for the stand.

Or if you're handy with wood..you could fashion a rich mahogany stand... or cherry wood, I love a nice piece of cherry wood.

Looks like the ‘stand’ is the same one for both horizontal and vertical. And given it’s a necessity whichever way you orientate it, I would say it will be included in the box.

Agreed. The stand probably adapts to work with either orientation. And it has to be included if it's needed to use in either orientation. Especially horizontal since the vast majority of people have consoles horizontal on shelves under their TVs.

Also agree with others that it's likely a design to maximize air flow as they've talked up the cooling and it being quiet after all the flack they deservedly got for the PS4/PS4 Pro being loud as fuck with many games for many people.
