I saw a review of this game by Happy Console Gamer today, and it looked pretty good. My reservation is about the combat and all the options attached to it. It looks rather daunting and complicated. I'm not experienced with JRPGs. HCG said "there's a lot to learn," but he also said that once you get it down, it's pretty basic. Did you find that to be the case?

I also heard that combat can be "challenging" for people who are new to this system. I know there is a casual mode, so that may help.

Anyhow, I'm just wondering whether I might enjoy this game. I've played plenty of WRPGs but not many JRPGs. I liked Lost Odyssey on Xbox, many years ago, and a couple of others. I've tried FF several times and Persona 5 without success. What appealed to me about this game -- from what I saw, anyhow -- was the storyline, the scope of the game, the environments, and its reputation as one of the better JRPGs of the past decade.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

I saw HCG's review as well and his assessment felt pretty spot on, as someone who understands the game's combat system. In a lot of ways, it's similar to learning to play chess - as they say "easy to learn, difficult to master". The game (even on the non-casual-mode setting) is extremely forgiving when it comes to the combat, so even though a lot of different ideas are introduced and you can take the time to learn all of the game's nuances, you're never really required to. You can learn the basics and essentially sail through the game without too much effort, but over time you naturally get better at understanding the systems and how they work together and how you can use it to your advantage and that's a really rewarding part of this game.

The story is absolutely the standout feature of this game. It's characters are fairly complex and interesting. The writing lends itself to subtly really well. The environments are HUGE - sometimes too huge, in my opinion.

The key difference between Xenoblade and something like Final Fantasy or Persona is that the combat is more action oriented rather than turn based. In Final Fantasy terms, it's closer to Final Fantasy XIV's combat system rather than X's. If you put down Final Fantasy or Persona for reasons other than the combat, you might not like this game either.

I'm not a graphics whore but man, this game is just so fucking blurry and low resolution. Each time I start it up I'm disappointed by it, to the extent that I doubt I'll even finishing it.

Just got the annoying little yellow thing on my team, so around 10 hours in.

Combat can get deep and complex only if you want to play it like that, if you don't it is really not that complex, I mean it mostlu plays itself with auto attacks if you are not sure what to press.

Nothing is really stopping you from picking it up and enjoying it yes you can take the combat as deep as you want with the arts, skills, gems, and links but you can also go causal mode and just enjoy the story. It really does not take that long to learn the basics and the basics is really all you need.

now the only thing stopping people are those who think they are not graphic whores and end up running up against scary blurry textures. I don't notice such things but I do know it is a thing IGN can't stop talking about it. I would not recommend this on you 4K TV or anything. The game has some very pretty art moments, One of the best JRPGs ever created only fools walk away. We are spoiled for choice these days but this is still a great game.

Feel free the watch one of the early Enel Character Guides I posted in the last few pages to see how deep you can take the combat.
The thing about combat you don't really start to feel bad ass until you max everything and take on superbosses that is the deepdive part of combat it is for UMs and Superbosses

Thanks for the feedback, jshackles jshackles and Smiles and Cries Smiles and Cries . That helps. It does sound like a game that I might be able to get into. It sounds like it accommodates players who have a range of skills and degrees of interest in mastering the battle system.

I actually don't own a Switch yet, but I'm considering getting one. The other two consoles seem to be offering up a lot of games that are just grim, dark, and serious. I'm tired of that. I want light, entertaining, beautiful worlds to get lost in. Unfortunately, I don't see more than one or two games on the Switch that appeal to me -- BotW, of course, and possibly Mario Odyssey. Xenoblade Chronicles might be a third. Then we've got Deadly Premonition in July, and that might make four, which would probably be enough.

Anyhow, thanks for the input. That gives me a little more confidence that I might like the game.

Honestly as much as I’m enjoying FF7Remake the the bad texture work and some really ugly ass made NPC models are bothering me waaaay more than resolution in Xenoblade DE.

I'm up to the mines in colony 6, feels like I've been playing for ages, and I'm at level 20. Am I nearly finished 😬

I'm enjoying it but I do prefer XC2 play mechanics more so far, and overall the vibe is drab and the scenery repetitive. Yeah I'm still early in the Game, just spent many hours in it.

The other way around for me. As hilariously bad as the worst parts of FFVII are (I saw a crate that had not ps2 textures but ps1 textures) the overall package is a visual feast. I felt like they poured everything into making it look pretty. Some bad looking npcs in sidequests and towns didn't detract from gorgeous main characters and stunning setpieces in my case.

Hang in there, you will see some amazing locales, including shortly after the mines. I actually didn't mind the mines personally but a lot of people say it's the low point of the game.

Don’t get me wrong, the overall package still looks really good but man some texture works are such a eyesore. Is it a glitch that they will patch it later on?

I heard it was an engine related glitch. But it was so ridiculous I screencapped it for posterity.

I like to think of it as a tribute to the original ps1 game.

I don't use this guy at all this time around I use the cheese with him back in the Wii days

I love using him. Haven't used him on superbosses but he's great paired with Melia for mowing down hordes of enemies while farming. Start a chain link with "happy happy" to get back some party gauge, then melly's talent art can build the chain multiplier x2 even though happy happy is a blue art that is usually a damage building dead end. Then use a red or purple art with someone for x3 and Riki has plenty of red and purples for x4 damage after that, although if there's lots of enemies I like purple so he can use burninate at x4 damage over time on all of them. If the chain attack stops there, the enemies will melt to death quickly because of x4 burn effect, and you'll have a bar of party gauge. But if it keeps going you'll max the party gauge easily by killing enemies so you can just be in almost constant chain attack mode. He's even better with someone to draw aggro, since he has 2 back attack arts that build party gauge, so he can basically fill half of the gauge all by himself almost instantly.

He's really not coming through for me with the "Firing on all Cylinders" achievement though. I'm trying to max all achievements and one of them requires filling the cylinder gauge beyond 9 times when gem crafting. He's supposed to be able to do it but once it gets to 9 it never goes any higher. I'm starting to get frustrated.

EDIT: oops I'm a dum-dum. I had crafting on all cylinders achievement lol. The ??? achievement I'm missing is happy new year which frankly sounds tedious to get lol

Well I'm super late game. Had a bunch of epic fights with all the superbosses and feel pretty happy about it, but also pretty done.

Just chasing down the achievements now and the last ones are quite unpleasant.

Phoenix - I need to get my party "wiped out" 50 times. The whole party has to die, not just the leader. That's happened maybe 10 or 20 times. I guess expert mode and levelling myself down could help here, then maybe I can just walk up to spike enemies with no spike defence gems equipped. Like level 90+ slobos.

Happy New Year - make 365 in game days pass and view sunrise on the 366th day. Done by setting the clock to 23:00, letting it tick over to a new day, then setting it to 4:00 and letting it tick over to a new dawn...365 times lol. After looking this up recently I just started constantly set the clock to 23:00 whenever I'm going around fighting bosses trying to get drops for advanced skill books. It has got me into trouble where I saw a blizzard at 2:00 meaning I had a chance to fight Avalanche Abassy, but I didn't kill him fast enough and dawn ticked over so my night vision gems stopped working and I couldn't hit him anymore. Total bummer, right? No! I need to get "wiped out" 50 times somehow, so it was a big help. And I got the clock to register a new dawn at the same time, so 2 birds with 1 stone...efficient.

I also need to fully max upgrade all of 1 character's arts, max out everyone's skill trees, and resurrect fallen party members 500 times. I thought that 1st one would be a nightmare, trying to find all the rarely dropped skillbooks, but Dunban has every book already just from running around beating up all the bosses. The skill tree thing actually looks worse. Everyone's is maxed except for 1 character who hasn't even got onto their last tree yet...it feels like it's taking ages. But when I look it up, the skill they are currently developing needs almost as much SP as the entire branch that they haven't started, so I probably shouldn't be concerned, once this skill is done they might fly through the rest. 500 resurrections though? I'm endgame. My characters only die to superbosses. No idea how many resurrections I've done, but let's guess it's 200. That's gonna be insanely tedious. Thinking about it all I can come up with is fighting superbosses with non-topple strats, that way characters have a chance to die. Which might make for some fun tactical challenges, but man forcing 500 deaths is a lot.

Once all that's done, I can go smash the final boss, enjoy the ending, and play future connected. I'm gonna approach it much more casually and just enjoy hanging out with Riki's kids. I did a heart-to-heart conversation between Melia and Shulk, and she talked about the things she wants to do after their adventure is over and Shulk agreed to go with her. So that is some pretty nice foreshadowing, assuming Future Connected adresses the things Melia raised in that conversation.

I finished it yesterday and have admit 10 years ago it was a much better experience. At least I have it more favorable in my memories^^

I am quiet pissed about the ending since XC2 more or less did a little retcon to connect both games. The endings of 1 and 2 don't fit 100% when you compare them but then XCDE sticks with original Ending. :-/ I would have doubled down on the connection and maybe show a bit more . . .

I started Future connect and it feels directly out of touch with the main game. I am open to see how it unfolds but the first hour feels like bad fan fiction :(

On the last achievement now. Thank goodness for podcasts. gonna knock it over, watch the ending and fire up Future Connected. Which people seem pretty underwhelmed by. I'll keep my expectations in check.

I am not grinding for those at all, not sure I have that many long form podcasts to do those achievements
Future Connected just made me jump back in to the main game because it unlocks 2 more art book levels in the main game once you beat FC, which you cannot allow to remain empty after all that grinding to 100%

WHAAAAAT

Oh wow! That would be cool, but I don't think I'll go back to the main game now though, I completed the achievements and I'm on to the baws soon. I'm also totally rethinking playing XC2 immediately after XC1. Might be better to give jrpgs a break and play something totally different for a while.

Kids...just say no to achievements

There's stuff I want from upcoming Monolith Soft-games, but if you want to express your wishes/expectations, you can do so without making up your own narrative and tricking other people into believing it to be real.

A very active twitter in which he really appears to be enjoying FFII.

Maybe we'll just have to wait for a direct?

Hey guys, I've been playing XC: DE for some days now and wanted to ask whether having
Melia (player controlled) Dunban and Shulk
as the active team a good combination? Because I keep hearing that the AI of both
Melia
and Shulk is supposed to be shit. But I kinda like those three the most.

First of all: Use who you like. Some combinations are less effective and others and might require more grinding. But not combination is "bad"

Secondly, the thing about Melia is that the AI doesn''t use her spells/summons in the best way, thus player control is superior. With Shulk the issue is that for some part of the game you have to rely on Monado arts. I'd compare it to letting an AI decide when to use items - unlike most players, AIs have no restraint using even precious, rare items. >_>

My recommendation: Do what you like. If it doesn't work for you at all, draw the consequences from there.

Yeah, it's a fine team especially if you give Dunban a few aggro drawing abilities. I recommend mixing things up a lot though. If it isn't seeming effective, rotate the lead. Dunban and Shulk both have great party gauge building abilities to get to chain attack, and Melia is great in position 2 or 3 during chain attack because her talent art can join different colours to easily get a big damage multiplier.

Yeah, I'm still getting around the thought of having an "evasion tank", as the internet calls him. In my past RPG endeavours, my tanks were always the conservative "squishy" tank but I wanted to change it up for Xenoblade. This was prompted by Sharla and her "I have a gun and shoot shit but I am shooting to heal"-schtick, which I kinda liked. So, if anything, Xenoblade has actually managed to break up my conservative veiws on party compositions/roles in RPGs a bit, I guess.

For Shulk, are there any recommendations with regards to gems? I default to agility enhancing gems for Dunban and Ether gems for Melia. But my gems on Shulk are all over the place, kinda.

Well it's situational but it's worth considering arts stealth/auto-attack stealth gems just so he can be truly free to use his positional abilities. It might seem dumb but it can feel really nice to just have Shulk freely do his already great damage and not keep having the issue of getting aggro off him coming up. Other than that, damage. HP/Strength/agility up and attack plus gems are good. By end game my Shulk had double attack and crit up gems.

That optional side boss at the end of future connected was legit hard. I tried lots of different setups but I couldn't beat him until I reached the recommended level 78. Without visions and chain attack, bosses who do massive attacks that hit your whole party are kind of a big deal.

All done now. Good times. Future Connected was a nice little side story, nothing more. It had great music and a good new area to explore, as well as lots of unique monsters that are just a bit stronger than you to give you a challenge. But the story doesn't amaze the way the the main game's story does. And it feels weirdly off-putting at times, still doing ps2 era rpg stuff... Like in cutscenes Shulk will be looking at a monster on screen, you'll see him watching it for like 10 seconds, and then when it's his turn to speak he'll exclaim with shock as if it had just entered his field of vision, that sort of thing. Mild spoilers, but Melia also completely forgot her feelings about Shulk, not just got past them, they no longer ever existed. And she never looked for her homs mother like she told Shulk she was going to do in their heart-to-heart conversation in the High Entia Tomb. But hey - the Nopon are cute, the fighting is enjoyable enough, and it's good to see Melly return to Alcamoth. It easily met my low expectations, because I actually was not that excited for it knowing that it was really short and did not feature the chain attack mechanic.

As for the actual main game, I enjoyed it even more this time than the first time I played it. Part of that is because I got way into Xenoblade Chronicles X's battle system and developed a deeper understanding of Xenoblade combat, which led to heightened experimentation and enjoyment of XC1 gameplay-wise. And part of it was because I remembered and forgot the exact right amount of the story to be able to recall that it's great but not actually recall what happens. So I was very excited to replay it and then sort of surprised by it too. It was more of a mindjob than I remember, but in a good way. It's a grand adventure with beloved characters, one so good that even me being stupid and maxing out all the tedious achievements like a pyschopath wasn't enough to ruin it. I still wish the visual output matched the standard I expect from Nintendo, but I'm happy with everything else about the game.

Anyways, I'm done. Thanks for the thread, and hype thread too. Ya buncha jokas

man you bring up a lot of details here I did not even think about long enough.

Melia not even addressing her and Shulk was a bummer and
not seeing the other party members until the title screen art photos was super stupid.

and yes fuck that boss I was not going to grind levels to beat that.

FC was really a poor game considering the rich content they could have pulled from.
Revisiting Achamoth was okay but yikes. They pulled that end boss out of their ass it had no connection to anything Xenoblade that pissed me off

the whole thing could have worked if they address Shulk, the history of the High Entia alredy said the leader could have 2 wives, why not allow Shulk 2 wives? He would not be the leder but Melia has a kingdom to run and she needs an heir let Shulk be the dad and bring alone 7th as Shulks first wife and no issue, Future Connect would make perfect sense we would see the future of those 3.

The whole point of Melia and Shulk is Melia and Shulk her not even addressing it wes a let down.
If I knew they were going to do that I would have rather we stayed with his real wife.

to ask something different
why does the game end up acting so noncommittal about Sharla and Reyn? Is it cut content like 7th's regenerated stuff... Ending yeah he is fishing with them but they could have made it more Solid since they spent the whole game teasing them getting linked up.

yeah she spent the whole game yelling out some other dudes name, but they could have made things better by doing more with it

I liked it cause dragon bosses and low expectations but...you actually could have done a lot with the material.

Not just closure or clarity to Shulk/Melly romance, remember when she was in the high Entia Tomb the first time?

She met like a simulation of her ancient ancestor's memories and personality that said it feels nothing, but if it could feel it would feel joy at her accomplishments. It also alluded to some spooky stuff about her legacy. I thought maybe she was gonna commune with the program of her ancestors again and be given a spiritual/digital quest that would CONNECT the FUTURE and tie into Xenoblade X's sci-fi space frontier or whatever is happening in Xenoblade 2. You know, a real Xenoblade style mindfuck story twist.

Good thing I didn't get too attached to the idea, since we got a much lighter, small scale story.

So...Rex really gets all the girls? Gotta admit, it does solve the "best waifu" problem, lol.

Just got to chapter 17, how long is that one? 16 just flew by

It's very short. Maybe 2 areas and a couple of bosses

EDIT: The game will warn you before the final boss and give you a YES/NO choice before proceeding, so you can go and do some of the enormous amount of side content then if you wanted to

A lot of people hit a wall when they get to her, there are many complaints that she is too strong. I don't know how to beat her because I did most of the side content and I was level 90 when I went back and fought her. So in my case she was super easy, I'm not even sure what moves exactly make her so hard under normal circumstances, she died too quickly for me to see what she does.

She summons orbs that acts as a shield and they're super annoying, they stick to you and do damage every few seconds, kind of like a swarm. They also have spike damage. You need to kill a few and then move on to her, Melia is really useful there because she can blast them away pretty easily. I'm always 3 levels under with expert mode on hence why she gave me a hard time probably

I got my CE yesterday.I really don't know when i'll play this since i feel that i still remember the original pretty well (played it when it first came out in Europe and put 300 hours + on it) but i couldn't miss on this CE since the original was one of my favorite games of all time. And i'm thankful that i got it. This is one of the best CE i have in my collection in terms of value for money. Steelbook is great, the OST vinyl is a nice addition to the digital OST but holy crap that art book is by far the most MASSIVE art book i have seen in any CE so far! It's only comparable with art books that are being sold separately and even then it still outshines many of them. If you are a fan of the series (or the original) and you can still find this CE for a reasonable price, you should definitely buy it even if it is for the art book alone.
