PS5 Blu-ray version will be sold for $466 in Japan in November 14th

- The price tags are in the realm of what I expect: 500 and 400.

- Jim Ryan recently mentioned specifically that the staggered release of the PS4 was a mistake and said the PS5 will have a worldwide release. So the Japan first is what makes me doubt the most about this source.

- Selling the stand separately would be a dick move by Sony. It's to be expected it will come with the console along with at least one controller. If real, those prices have to be for extra/spare parts.

- Stop crunching numbers over how much a 4K Blu-ray disc drive costs. The Digital Edition could be 100€ cheaper because Sony gets a bigger cut from every digital purchase.

Yesterday I was looking at Sony's latest fiscal year data and 89.5% of the software revenue they get comes from selling digital games and DLC. That's 9.29 billion dollars from the 10.38 billion total in 2019. It's THAT big of a difference.

To put it in perspective, the total revenue of Sony's gaming division in 2019 was 18.2 billion dollars (including software, hardware and services). Digital software sales represent half of that revenue. Of course Playstation wants to incentivize people to buy the Digital Edition PS5.

I'm all digital since late 2014, but would buy the OG PS5. More money for Sony = more quality games!

While a $399 XSX is pretty unlikely, I would say it is far more likely than a $199 Lockhart. At that point the BOM would have to be well below $150.

There also has been quite a number of rumors that Phil has the backing of Microsoft's CFO and CEO to price the Series X aggressively in order to regain market share. So I can definitely see them going with $399 for the Series X and just eat the loss. They'll easily make that up with their subscription services.

I've had a Ps4 since launch, and have only purchased 2 physical titles for it. I still feel like they would need to drop the price substantially for me to give up the option of physical.

The other problem here with Lockhart in the mix is there is no need for them to be so aggressive on price with XSX. Give Lockhart a disc drive and price it at break even ($299/$349) and make a little profit on XSX at $499. The hardcore enthusiasts are getting a XSX in any case and some of them see the Lockhart as nice addition for their bedrooms or for the kids. If Lockhart is the only system you can afford then I say it really needs a disc drive for that demographic. Losing BC, used games and sharing/swapping games would be too much of a sacrifice.

I actually think XSX BOM should be virtually the same as the One X or lower going by the below pictures. Far less complex and few parts (cheaper) than most launch consoles (PS3 comes to mind).

On thing is to eat losses to a degree on hardware to sell better but selling a more expensive machine than your competition at a lower price than your competition is bad business. Massive, massive risk. Edging desperation. A similar kind of risk as paying 30M$ to a streamer for a 2 years exclusive deal with your platform and shutting down the platform in 1 year because it had zero effect on the audience.

If the Lockhart is what's rumored to be: a less powerful console than the Xbox One X and the PS4 Pro with a more modern CPU and an SSD I think it can happen and will be aimed at casuals that otherwise wouldn't jump on to the next gen for a couple of years after launch.

I guess we'll see. Phil could just be playing mind games, but he did say on record that he has the backing of his CFO and CEO to be agile with pricing. That to me means he's willing to price it at a loss in order to persuade PS4 owners to jump ship.

Rumor | Prodigious PS5 price rumor: Alleged prices for both consoles and every PlayStation 5 accessory; initial launch in Japan supposedly November 14

PS5-accessories-1.jpg

Pseudo price rumors concerning both variants of the PS5 console and all of the related accessories, including the Pulse 3D wireless headset and HD camera, have been posted on Twitter. The same highly spurious source claims the PlayStation 5 will be first launched in Japan on November 14 and will cost ¥49,980 (US$466) for the Blu-ray model.

We keep hearing Nov 🤔if tht is true it'll be the best Thanksgiving ever lol I can't fucking wait.

That still feels too low for what the DualSense offers. I think it's more likely it MSRPs for $69.99.

What the price of the basic Dualshock 4? You need to compare basic to basic. If I remember right, the basic Dualshock 4 color is more cheap than the others.

You don't need to pay, I don't need to pay. I'm only a new tech nerd. Any headsets, even extremely old stereo headset, but good quality should give you great experience! You only need the simplest form, 2.0 channel.

That's the whole point of The Tempest 3D Audio, any stereo headset/headphones should give you great experience depending on cans quality indeed.

But for wireless, if PS5 supports LDAC, then maybe an aux 3.5 wire through dualsense could provide that? Not sure. No need to rush, just wait and watch all the reviews. Most likely the rumble features comeback might be the new selling point.
Oh yeah I'll wait for sure. No need to buy pre ps5.

It isn't really less powerful than One X/Pro though and everything else is many notches above. Tom Warren now also says the CPU clocks match XSX too (I guess the Wiley fox got a bite from a dev with that bait!). I think even at $299 it would at best be break even. I still think it will need a disc drive for the casual demographic though. Here in the UK and EU the discless One S didn't sell even at £130 and only sold at all at £99.

Price of the console would be very solid, but that $40 Spider-man game as a launch titles is a bit iffy. Also the stand seems a bit pricey at $25 if its just a regular stand and doesn't have some sort of cooling function as many assumed.

Everybody is saying the Lockhart is targeting 4 Teraflops of computing power. This is slightly less than the PS4 Pro and way less than the One X. I know Teraflops are not the only way of measuring power and I'm not an expert by any means but it seems obvious to me the only reason for the Lockhart existing is undercutting the PS5 in price so the Series X could aim for more power and target the hardcore fans.

The failure of the Xbox One SAD is living proof that the console space is all about balance and quality to price ratio.

I still can't believe 399 for the digital version, however the argument that they may take a big loss on it to lock people into their system (while also slowly getting rid of used copies) is very convincing.

I really can't wait for the prices, Microsoft can't go 399.

Where is the price of the SSD 2TB?
Expect 300-400 bucks for a 2TB drive, exactly what they're costing right now. Gen4 NVMEs won't be cheaper in 6 months.

Exactly. TFLOPs is just one Metric.
Lockhart will be above Ps4 Pro in every other metric. Bandwidth, Ram, Pixel and Texel Fillrate, IO throughput, and other stuff like RT, VRS and other modern architecture features.
In fact, Lockhart will have even more bandwidth than Xbox One X

That 800gig ssd on the digital is gonna fill up quick.....and there may be even less with the os

People really gotta think about that and any external drive or internal slot drive they use may not be 100% compatible or comparable with the ps5 ssd drive speeds so games may have to run at a normal ssd speed

biggest issue of next gen.

Yeah that's the thing. e.g. the 5700XT at 9.75TF matches or betters the higher TF Vega 64/Radeon VII in games.

Going by rumours the Xbox event next month will have a tonne of games and if that is true and Lockhart comes in at around £280 with a disc drive I might even bite myself if PS5 with disc drive comes in over £400. Be really interesting to see how Sony play this.

They want to sell the crappy digital version to sell their games 70€ on the market... This is just a damn trap...

And 499€ is a damn joke, good luck to sell a lot of console at this price...

$59.99 in the US for the regular jet black version. I'm thinking the DualSense will MSRP at $69.99 for the regular version.

So they're matching, unless Sony treat DualSense like some Xbox Elite Controller. This is pretty much what we can get. People kinda dislike the classic DualSense color, so Sony will probably gonna explore this.
Are those DualSense function be found on Nintendo Switch joycons? Maybe if DualSense come with back button attachment. Dualshock 4 still one of the most popular controllers around so Sony will not stop selling Dualshock anytime soon even when DualSense launch.

The crappy digital version? Lol wtf it's literally the same device with the exception of a UHD drive.

I don't think that has to be case. The original DualShock wasn't $59.99. Prices of things go up over time. I also think that they stopped using the DualShock name so that they can price the DualSense differently. The DualSense has more components and features than the DS4. Built in mic and the haptic triggers just to name a couple. Nintendo bumped up their Pro Controller to $70 for the Switch. No reason why Sony couldn't do the same.

I don't have that kind of salary to actually afford buying every game digitally.
I bought Last of Us 2, finished it in 5 days and sold it for 40€. So i guess i'm all for blue-ray drive PS5.

To be honest, Nintendo increase the prices of anythink with much little critic, on the other hand Microsoft and Sony get loads of critics about their price tags. I agree with you, nothing could stop Sony to target $70 on their Dualsense just like Nintendo with their Pro Controller. The question is: They will? Look at the speculation around the PS5... are pretty much around the price tag.

400USD for the digital edition sounds great to me. Was expecting worse, so this would be nice.

Anywhere closer to 600USD gets frightfully near four figures in Canada with exchange and tax, which I just can't mentally get over for a console.

With the focus on audio I really hope they allow use of all bluetooth headsets, rather than forcing you to get a Sony one. I have way too many headphones, IEMs, earbuds...

I guess we'll see. As a marketing guy myself, anytime I see a company rebrand something, it usually means they want the flexibility to price the product differently. I would love for the controller to stay at $60, but given the extra components required to manufacture the DualSense, I would be personally very surprised if the MSRP isn't bumped up.

What would they sue under though?

It's an interesting one.

My day job is as a regulatory lawyer. Not a stealth brag; it's invariably dull and monotonous. I also work in financial payments rather than digital distrubution, so I could be well wide of the mark (and genuinely happy to be corrected). That said, there are basic principles that raise alarm bells.

Regulators (especially European ones) do not like companies using dominance in one market (console sales) to force through an advantage in another (digital distribution). That said, this isn't quite analogous, as obviously only Sony can sell the Playstation and the market it is taking on is not a direct competitor, rather an alternative form of distribution, being discs and the second hand market.

That said, what really *would* raise eyebrows is charging well over the odds for a technical component, being the disc drive, in order to entice consumers away from a genuine choice (being pysical or digital media) and locking them into Sony's digital platform. Regulators, depending on the day of the week and who has lobbied hardest, can (and this may come as a shock) sometimes protect consumers rather than big business.

As I said, I could be wide of the mark and perhaps the two markets have been established as sufficiently independent.

It would be a dick move on Sony's part though (although perfectly understandable).

If such a case would even move forward, I can see Sony simply countering with the fact that they are part of the consortium that holds the Blu-ray patent. And so there wouldn't be some nefarious reason that Sony would "trick" consumers into getting the Digital Edition, as they stand to benefit from either SKU.

Well perhaps, but the blu ray market has died on its arse (in terms of potential profits). Just because they are in a position to sacrifice a form of media doesn’t mean they can force it through before the market decides.

As I say, I could be entirely wrong, but I would be very, very surprised if the price difference between models was that significant.
